Ubuntu :: Splash Logo On Background Without Resetting The Root

Jun 7, 2011

I'm setting the root window background to a gradient with the following command:

Code:

DISPLAY=:0 fbsetroot -gradient Elliptic -from blue -to black

What I would like to do next is to display a small logo in the center of the background without resetting the root window background color. Right now I tried the following two commands and they both reset the root window to a solid color... I would like to keep the gradient color.

Code:

vmsetbg -e logo.png # resets the root window
fbsetbg -c logo.png # also does the same thing

I cannot use just a single image because the same image has to look good on all screen sizes from netbooks to 52" TVs

Ubuntu :: White Logo Splash Stops Boot Process?

Jan 4, 2010

I'm having trouble with the initial white logo splash in 9.10. Apparently without exception the boot process stops during the white logo segment. I don't think it freezes because I can turn NumLock on and off.

If I edit the menu entry and remove "quiet splash" from the "linux ..." line the computer boots perfectly fine without any errors. How can I diagnose this?

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot Opensuse Under Grub2 With Splash Background And Console Background?

Mar 24, 2010

I originally have Ubuntu Lucid on my machine. I just installed opensuse 11.2 on another partition without bootloader installed. So I'm still using the Ubuntu Lucid default bootloader grub2. Code:
menuentry "openSUSE 11.2 (i586) (on /dev/sda2)" {
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,2)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 9ac05ede-e7c4-47f3-b55b-66d5844$
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop root=/dev/sda2
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop
}
which parameters should I add?

Ubuntu :: Boot Splash Screen With Purple Background

Feb 10, 2011

I switched back to my ubuntu installation few hours ago and I couldn't notice the strange boot screen! I remember that it used to be orange, there was the ubuntu logo and a nice loading bar. All is displayed now is a horrible purple background with just the text "Ubuntu" in the middle and a few dots just below it, showing the loading process.. I don't know how to restore the classic splash screen (I also found the original background in /usr/share/images/xsplash ).

I think i should only see the splash with the progress bar until shutting down finishes. But for no apparent reasons i see both which is very annoying.

It might help that i changed the splash screen to a custom one. Here is the one i use and i followed every single instruction.

SUSE / Novell :: FSCK Failed Error After Resetting Root Password

Jun 9, 2009

We have a server for which the root password had been lost, and there were no other user accounts set up. Yesterday evening I attempted to reset the root password by booting from the install CD and using VI to clear the root password in the passwd and shadow files. I then rebooted, and the system has halted with an 'FSCK failed. Please repair manually and reboot' error, with a prompt to 'Enter root password' below. But of course the root password isn't known (I had expected it to blank after editing the passwd and shadow files, but it doesn't work), so I have no way of logging on.

If I re-install Grub 2 from the live CD should that reset all the personalisations such as as splash screen and colours in the Grub splash to default? In my case they are not resetting. I would expect them to revert to the default black/white you get when initially installing the OS. the Grub timeout to be a lot less than its supposed to be? e.g. the default timeout setting of 5 seconds is more like 2 or 3 in reality, and when I set my prefered value to 2 seconds it results in being about 1/4 sec or so.

Ubuntu :: GDM Background - Cannot Change The Background Image To Any Of Mt .jpg Wallpaper Files And .png Files

Apr 3, 2011

I have spent the most part of 5 hours trying to fix this issue. For some reason I cannot change the background image to any of mt .jpg wallpaper files (and .png files). I've tried using the Ubuntu-Tweak application, but I end up getting a purple screen (default) or a black screen (default). So then I tried using the terminal method by making the Appearance window appear when I would log out. That works, except when I go to use my background image, it shows as a question mark for the image preview, and the icon for the file is a gray box. All while doing this my background images that I tested are all in the /usr/share/backgrounds location. Please help! I really want to get rid of the default images and use my images... :/ My desktop/screen in 1440x900, and most my background images are around that size. They work with my regular desktop for my account.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Settings Resetting

Dec 10, 2010

10.10 x64. This did not occur before I dist-upgraded from 10.04.I use a USB headset that has always "just worked," as long as I have it selected under both Input and Output in Sound Preferences. Now, periodically I'll hear a pop in my headset, the music/sound will mute for a second, and then come back louder. What's happening is that in Sound Preferences, the default selections are being reset. The sound comes back louder because of my volume settings. Additionally, on boot I run a script to set a few keybindings I use for Ventrilo. When all of this happens, I have to run this script again to get the bindings back.

To fix it, I have to go into sound preferences, select my headset in both Input and Output, fiddle with the volume so it returns to normal, and then rerun my binding script. My first guess was that the headset's connection is "farting", like it'd do a disconnect/reconnect, and Ubuntu deals with it by selecting visible hardware. But I can't for the life of me reproduce it. It just happens randomly.I guess it's possible that the script's issue is related to ventrilo/wine, and not a direct result of this sound issue. I'm mentioning it in case it isn't.I reproduced it by pulling the USB cable out and putting it back in. So there's either a short or Ubuntu is resetting the USB port periodically. Does it drop ports like that?
