Ubuntu Installation :: Windows Not Recognized By Version 9.1 - Use Free Space By Removing OS

Apr 28, 2010

In my system, I had installed windows XP first and had deleted one of the partitions (made free space.I am not a techy. I dont know the exact term). In that space, I have installed PC Linux OS (Linux). Now, I want to use that free space to Install Ubuntu by removing the PC Linux OS. When I boot with the live CD of Ubuntu 9.1 to install, in one of the steps, it says the system does not have any OS. It neither recognises windows nor the other linux. Kindly help me. What should I do now. Could I manage to install Ubuntu without completely formatting the system all again.

Fedora :: So Many Xorg-x11-drv-* Files, So Little Space?

Nov 19, 2009

I can understand installing so many xorg-x11-drv-* files being installed, especially from a livecd. What I don't understand is why I can't remove the ones for hardware I don't have. For example, if I try to do a yum remove (or use yumex to do so) xorg-x11-drv-cirrus, it wants to remove xorg-x11-drivers.Now I understand that the -drivers file is a way to force all of them to be installed. Will it break anything if I go ahead and remove it along with the extra -drv- files? It is more than an academic exercise. I have installed Fedora 12 Constantine on my EeePC 900. Given the limitation in storage space, I would like to free up as much of it as I can so these superfluous video drivers need to go away. Since I don't want to break my setup in the process, I have not executed the command.

I can't remove any notifications package without removing a bunch of important software along with it. Also, F13 refuses to "Safely Remove" either of my external disks. Ubuntu :: Completely Removing Files Firefox / Spotify

Jan 12, 2010

Depending on whether I launched it with gnome do or the main menu I got a different 'version' of spotify, I could tell this because it had different searches remembered. I tried removing wine and spotify and gnome do via synaptic and completely remove and then the option to remove configuration files left over. I did a search and there were loads of wine files left so I just deleted. When I reinstalled wine, spotify and gnome do the same problem occurred.

Also Firefox started crashing ubuntu, just freezing it, so I tried to uninstall completely, but when I restarted it kept the same add ons and still crashed. So I uninstalled again and tried to delete all firefox folders but I can't work out how to do it as root.

General :: Removing Quotes When Dragging Files To Terminal

Feb 18, 2010

The following script will work when I type the path to the file I want to checksum, but not when I drag the file to the terminal because the linux terminal (unlike the Mac) automatically puts quotes around the file path, which causes an error. I did not find anything in gconf-editor or anywhere else to alter this behaviour, and my post in Launchpad is unanswered so far. (the script in itself is not very useful, I just stumbled upon this error when experimenting with bash).

So, is there a workaround for stripping the quotes from the input, or can I configure the terminal to not quote the input when I drag a file into it (which I would prefer?)I am currently logged in from Mac OS, but the question refers to ubuntu karmic with which I dual boot.ADMINISTRATORS: Thanks for the quick reply to my newbie question about posting new threads. Actually I don't see now what the difficulty was; I guess I was tired from trying to debug the above script (not funny).

Ubuntu / Apple :: Removing ._DS_Store Files During Data Migration

Jun 22, 2010

I'm migrating data (music and videos mainly) from a NAS server that was being used as my iTuens Media Folder onto a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 and I'd like to get rid of all the ._DS files as well as other files that os x 10.4 has been creating such as duplicates of mp3 files but prefixed with "._".

The reason I'm keen to remove all of these files is because I stumbled across a corrupted ._DS_Store file that caused me all sorts of head aches and I don't want them causing any problems in linux.

I've used the search function in Nautilus to search for ._ but it returns no results, even when I'm searching in a directory that I know for certain has those files in it. I have 'View hidden files' selected.

Debian Multimedia :: Removing Epiphany Without Removing Half The System?

May 31, 2011

I know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software

Ubuntu Installation :: Removing Evolution From Synaptic Vs Just Removing The Applet

Feb 27, 2011

what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.

im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.

all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.

Ubuntu :: 5,149,552 Files In 30.2 GB And RSYNC Out Of Space?

Jun 9, 2011

I am running Ubuntu 10.04. I am transferring roughly 62 GB of data libraries to my 84 GB /home partition. I'm using rsync because scp kept stalling, and I had to restart it over and over. Things were going great until recently when it began to show an error: "failed: No space left on device (28)" These are the things I've done so far: Used the GUI to find out how much I have copied so far: 5,149,552 which take up 30.2 GB. df -h, it tells me that my /home partition is 56% used, and that I have 33 GB available. (42 GB used out of 78 GB with 33 GB available) Also, none of my other partitions are anywhere near 100%. the /home partition is the most-used and it's only a little over half-full. du -s in the directory where I'm copying all of this: it also returned 42206500. Additionally, when I try to save screen captures, it sometimes fails with a "device full" error. What's going on? Am I really out of space? Why doesn't it show me that I'm out of space?

Is there a hidden temp file that rsync uses that just got too full? I did a little research on wikipedia and it said that ext4 has a 64,000 directory limit. Could it be that I somehow broke that limit with all of these files? Solution: not enough inodes for the vast amount of subdirectories on hard drive. This wasn't an RSYNC problem, rather, a partition configuration issue. To check inode usage: df -i If you want to add any inodes, you will need to backup your partition and format it using mke2fs (man mke2fs). Be sure to change the respective inode setting.
