Mar 24, 2010a friend of mines laptop died a few weeks ago and i said i would extract data off the drive for her... did this with dd and created a .image file. I have this image mounted so it is browseable, and we can copy files from it however i am unable to delete files from it?
You'd think it was not a big deal... but i'm running out of space!! and the .image is 90 odd gb. I know i "could" just get the disk and copy the files off she wants... but that would be too easy

Red Hat / Fedora :: Cannot Copy Files Between Servers - Data Gets Corrupted
Apr 13, 2011I am attempting to copy files from one server to an external USB drive on a second server. Both servers are running custom RedHat Linux, kernel 2.6. Both are setup as Check Point SecurePlatform (one is a log server and the other a management server). I am trying to archive files from one (HP DL380 G5) to the second (HP DL380 G6). I am not able to archive directly to the external usb drive when connected to the HP DL380 G5 (data gets corrupted and switches to read-only access). The external USB drive has no issues when connected to the HP DL380 G6 server, thus my reason for trying to copy the files across servers.
When I attempt to use scp to copy files between the server, I am prompted for the password. Once entered the debug shows the authentication is successful, but then no files are copied (see log below). I have tried searching for potential answers, but none have panned out. Unfortunately I can't yet post the actual scp debug log output as some of the text is viewed as a URL and not yet allowed for me. I have changed all the atsign symbols to '(a)' to avoid the URL inference.

Mar 5, 2010I am running ubuntu 8.10 on an old gateway as a server. I have vent up and running just fine. I went to configure the ventrilo_srv.ini file and now that I have made the changes, I need to restart the server program, which I am having problems doing. The following command returns the following:
sudo /home/taylor/ventrilo/ventsrv/ventrilo_srv restart

Ubuntu Servers :: Remotely Restoring A Server Using An Image And The Dd Command?
Apr 18, 2010I'm getting ready to deploy a Ubuntu server in a remote location. I am deathly afraid of something going horribly wrong though, so what I'd like to do is be able to somehow image the system when it's working, and be able to restore that remotely via SSH if things go to hell. My first thoughts were that I could partition the hard drive, and install two separate instances of Ubuntu. One would be the server in it's working state, and the other one would be a separate instance of Ubuntu that I could boot into to restore an image (if that's possible).
1. If I had two separate instances of Ubuntu on two separate partitions, and I was currently booted into one of them, would it be possible to tell the Ubuntu server to reboot and boot into the other instance of Ubuntu on the other partition over SSH? (SSH is the only form of access I will have to the server)
2. Is there a better way to remotely restore a server than what I outlined above?
3. Also, I've used the dd command to make backups before, but it copies an entire hard drive byte for byte. Is there an argument I can tag on, or another command to use altogether that will only copy the bits that are being used?

Ideally it'll be an integrated part of the filesystem.I'm thinking some sort of RAID as a backing up my data. RAID 1 seems like a such a waste but then again, these days, HDDs are cheap.And when I do add more HDDs, I'd like them to appear as one big storage unit instead of separate drives.Any suggestions and tips on how to go about this is welcome. Feb 15, 2011I already have an ubuntu backup server in my location and need this one server to be backed up remotely in another state. this other location is a helpdesk so there's a danger that they can gain access to confidential data. I'll be setting up this new server as an ftp server but need to set the ftp folder to only allow access to the backup server and me. Because its remote on the helpdesk side, they'll need some access to the file system but need to be completely blocked off from the ftp folder where all the data is at. How can I make sure I can keep them away from my data and still be able to retrieve or copy files over without permission issues between both servers?

Aug 23, 2010I am completely stumped. Found my web server (lighttpd) unresponsive this morning and had to hard cycle it. After some cleaning up, all was happy. However, after about an hour of handling a decent amount of web traffic, time freezes as far as the web server is concerned. I've got an hour of access.log data with the following date: [23/Aug/2010:20:42:58 -0500]
It never changes. The load average now reads 0.00 0.00 0.00 (which is totally inaccurate). And I am not able to successfully log in remotely. I have taken the server down 3 or 4 times today and after an hour or so of functioning normally, this is what happens. Additionally, the local time is now off by 30 minutes.Trying to force with ntpdate does nothing (or, at the very least, sets it to the same incorrect time)

Todays updqate would bring in linux-image-2.6.39-1-686-pae linux-image-686-pae, but my CPU Single core Intel Pentium M (-UP-) cache 1024 KB flags (sse sse2) bmips 1196.07 clocked at 600.00 MHz doesn't use PAE so it told me to remove linux-image-686 and to install linux-image-486. So more shiny crap that doesn't support older hardware, it is getting to be as bad as Microsoft.
Why don't I just go upgrade or buy new hardware with every new shiny crap that wants to upgrade. If it isn't broken do NOT fsck with it.

Ubuntu Servers :: Access The Data In .fbd Data File
Feb 19, 2011We purchased a new database system at work last October, ditching the old system because of a lack of support from the vendor. This is a retail Point of Sale and Backoffice database system. I am not sure what system the new one runs on, but the system we replaced was a Firebird data base. The reason I am posting is because we are now in need of the information contained in the old database which was not completely imported into the new system.
Basically the problem is this: The database in on a Windows XP system and I found a copy of SQL Manager Lite 2008 on the system, which after quite a bit of studying, I figured out how to extract the database into a removable file. I have this file (178MB) on a USB stick in a file called Backoffice.fbd.
My studying suggests to me that I can get into this database with MySQL. I have never used this and have no clue how to do this. All I want to be able to do get into the database and create tab deliminated spreadsheet files for each of the database sections (Customers, Repairs, Sales History, stock files, etc.) Is it possible to do this with Ubuntu and MySQL and if so, can expert suggest one or two things to get me started. While a guided tutorial would be nice because I am not an expert, I am willing to learn on my own if someone could point me in the right direction.
