Ubuntu :: Removed Wine - Cannot Login To System

Jun 24, 2010

I was experimenting WINE in my Ubuntu machine. After a while I've decided to remove it. I uninstalled the application that I installed using WINE (Steam - Day of Defeat). And then I ran the following command:
sudo apt-get remove wine*
I checked (using tab) and only wine, wine1.2 and wine-gecko where there to remove. After doing this I shutdown my computer. When I turned it on again everything was fine until I had to pass trough the login page. I've inserted my credentials and then when I clicked in "Login" it appears a dark screen and then again the Login screen.

Ubuntu :: WINE Not Completely Removed?

Jul 28, 2011

I tryied installing wine patched for league of legends from the source code (./configure, make, sudo make install). Wine didn't appeared in the application tab in gnome and then i installed wine from its repo. After uninstalling it i saw that whenever i try to open an exe file, wine still tries to run it, regardless the fact that wine is not present in the application folder. After a search i find that wine libs and files are still there, even after the unistatll. I think they are there because the installation from source files so how do i remove them besides deleting them manually?

Ubuntu :: Removed PPA - Now Can't Login / What To Do?

Jan 12, 2011

All I did was go into Software Sources, selected the PPA for the program I wanted to remove (I forget what it was called now - Synabolus or something...it was a desktop search program), then went into Ubuntu Software Centre and removed the applicable entries there.

Now when I boot up into Ubuntu it asks for my password (which it never use to do) and when I enter the password it just keeps looping to the password screen.

Ubuntu :: System Hangs Whenever Module Is Inserted Or Removed?

Jun 26, 2010

After the updates about a week ago I noticed my system was hanging (screen and mouse frozen, unable to switch desktops, trl+Alt+SysRq+B still reboots) frequently. Though sometimes the system would not hang but become extremely sluggish and unresponsive. I've been able to determine that the problems occur whenever a module is added or removed. I can cause this problem with such commands as:

sudo modprobe aes
sudo rmmod raid0

I've tried multiple kernels but the problem persists. I've run memtest on the system but no errors have been found. I wonder if this could be some other sort of hardware problem but I'm suspicious that this began after a set of updates. I've seen message such as this in the kern.log:

Code:

Jun 25 22:35:48 localhost kernel: [ 240.480059] INFO: task modprobe:2672 blocked for more than 120 seconds.
Jun 25 22:35:48 localhost kernel: [ 240.492925] "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.
Jun 25 22:35:48 localhost kernel: [ 240.506918] modprobe D 00000000ffffffff 0 2672 2650 0x00000004

[code]....

I've tried using strace but that was not helpful. This is becoming a serious problem as I cannot load any encrypted volumes due to the inability to load the aes module. dpkg is currently in an interrupted state as the system hung when upgrading virtualbox-3.2 when it attempted to remove the modules. So my system is barely functional and I cannot see any way to fix things.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update My System Without Having Efi-grub Removed?

Jul 15, 2011

I'm running Kubuntu natty on grub-efi-amd64. I've just received notification of a bunch of new packages to install, I believe part of it is a kernel update. When I click on "apply" a window comes up which says "Additional changes are required to complete the task". "2 packages to remove" lists "grub-efi" and "grub-efi-amd64". It lists 5 packages to install 3 of which are linux kernel and 2 of which are the bios version of grub.

How can I update my system without having efi-grub removed?

When I have plugged the drives in a couple of weeks later, the grub is gone and system will not boot. I get like a grub 1.5 error and that is all the options I have. Does anyone one know why this happens? Nothing on the drives but the O/S to get rid of windows. All drives worked perfect until they were removed and installed later.

Ubuntu :: "add User" Interface Removed Rootaccess On Whole System?

Feb 24, 2010

I couldn't see any users in the "Users and Groups" menu, not even my own account. Then I tried to create a new (unprivileged) user, but it didn't show up niether. Then I quit the "Users and Groups" menu, and tried to open it again. This time, I could see a user, but only the root user. Then I quit again. Later I tried to gain root-access doing some other stuff, but all of a sudden, system told me, that I wasn't in the sudoers file anymore! Then I rebooted the whole system, and got stuck with this messeage:

Code:
mountall: mount /dev/pts [397] terminated with status 32
mountall: Filesystem could not be mounted: /dev/pts
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16

[Code].....

All happened using the graphical interface in Ubuntu. I haven't been messing around with the terminal or the rootaccount or anything like that - just tried to add a new user to the system using the graphical inteface, and now I can't even access my system.

Ubuntu Installation :: Mount NTFS File System In Wine?

May 4, 2010

Trying to mount my NTFS file system (portable hard drive) so that is can be recognized by a program I have installed in wine (seagate manager). I've tried to change the mount point for the drive to /home/.wine/c_drive but that doesn't seem to do the trick, and messing around with the fstab file just results in error messages when I try to mount/unmount the drive.

who to change the mount point properly? /dev/sbd1 is my partition.

Either that or does anyone know how to configure wine so that it will find my drive? I've tried adding an e: drive to the drives tab and mapped it to mediaSimons' Seagate (partition label), but that doesn't seem to do the trick either.

Ubuntu :: System Stutter Running Heavy Load Through Wine?

Oct 26, 2010

I have recently begun contributing to the Folding@Home distributed computing project. Due to oversights in the application's design and to process the most advantageous work units, I need to run this command line app through wine. The application is very CPU/RAM intensive, but it does not put much load on the hard drive. It is multi-threaded and uses up to 100% of all 6 cores in my machine. I run it with a "nice" level of 19 with hopes that it won't slow down my normal desktop use.

Here is the problem... when running this setup, my system will frequently freeze for a fraction of a second and then resume. With the more complicated work units, this can happen 1-2 times per minute. During the freeze, the mouse will stop moving, videos stop playing, music pauses, etc. The system is completely unresponsive. However, each instance only lasts for a very short time. Since this happens so often, my productivity is negatively impacted (and it's very annoying).

I previously ran the native Linux version of F@H without this problem, but that was also processing much less complicated calculations. I have tried with wine 1.2.1 and 1.3.5 with the same results. The application does not have problems running on Windows. It has been suggested that the current Linux CPU scheduler is to blame, but is there anything I can do to resolve this now or work around it?

Debian Configuration :: 32 Bit Apps On Wine Cannot See System Fonts

Oct 23, 2015

I've just installed Debian 8.2 KDE 64bit, installed wine, and found that a 32-bit Windows program (Agent newsreader) could not see the linux system fonts. (This worked fine on Kubuntu 14.04)

Since this is the first time that I've installed Debian, I'm not sure if I'm missing something obvious or if this is an actual bug.

Steps to reproduce:
Fresh install of Debian 8.2 KDE 64bit.
apt-get install wine
wine wordpad # this is a small word-processor for wine that is supplied with wine
menu -> format -> font
all linux fonts are visible -- so far so good

Because I want to use a 32bit program, I now have to do this, I understand:
dpkg --add-architecture i386
apt-get update
apt-get install wine-bin:i386

But after that,if I run "wine wordpad" and look at the fonts, all the linux system fonts are gone. The only fonts visible are the nine that are built into wine (Courier, Fixedsys, Marlett etc..) So installing the i386 wine support seems to have broken something.

Ubuntu :: Wine System Tray Suddenly Started Appearing Its Own Little Window When Running Netmeter

Aug 13, 2010

I have been pulling my hair out trying to find out why the Wine System Tray suddenly started appearing in its own little window when running Netmeter, cluttering up the desktop. I searched the web in vain, back many tears, most people saying they couldn't understand it when it happened to them.

Then I realized that the last thing I did was to stop Cairo Dock (the novelty had worn off!) and to move the Gnome Panel to the BOTTOM of the screen in place of Cairo. I suspected this was making the Wine System tray homeless.

So I moved the Gnome panel back to the TOP, restarted Ubuntu, stopped and restarted Netmeter and the Netmeter icon appeared back in the panel where it belonged.

Would I be correct in thinking that Wine System Tray will only stay in the panel if the panel is at the top of the screen?
