Ubuntu :: Login Password Keeps Changing?
Jul 6, 2010Last night I had rebooted my machine and when it came back up it would no longer accept my password. My 7 year old son had been playing on the machine earlier so I assumed he inadvertently reset my password to something else. I rebooted again, added the rw init=/bin/bash was able to get in and reset my password. That worked, I was able to access with no problem. I was able to perform admin tasks, it would prompt for password and accept the password. I just went to edit a config file and all of a sudden it is no longer accepting my password again and (my son has been no where near it)?!!?
I am not even sure where to start troubleshooting this - I know I can reboot and reset the password again - but is there a way to figure out how this is happening.
Ubuntu :: Changing Session Type When Login In Without Password?
Sep 26, 2010I am unable to change session type when not requiring passord on login.
How requiring password was changed:
System/Administration/Users and Groups
Clicked on my User
Clicked "Change" next to "Password: Asked on login"
Checked the checkbox for "Don't ask for password on login"
OK'd, everything
Please try this yourself as it might be hard to understand. But the option to change session type (ie: Gnome failsafe instead of reguar Gnome) is only visable along side with the password field.
Is it possible to make the session type setting visable without requiering password on login?

The problem is that when I make changes in Orta Settings Manager they have no effect at all, even after I save them and unselect and select Orta Theme in Appearance Preferences. For instance, I never get the dark panel, but only the light one.

Jan 12, 2011All I did was go into Software Sources, selected the PPA for the program I wanted to remove (I forget what it was called now - Synabolus or something...it was a desktop search program), then went into Ubuntu Software Centre and removed the applicable entries there.
Now when I boot up into Ubuntu it asks for my password (which it never use to do) and when I enter the password it just keeps looping to the password screen.

Jun 24, 2010I was experimenting WINE in my Ubuntu machine. After a while I've decided to remove it. I uninstalled the application that I installed using WINE (Steam - Day of Defeat). And then I ran the following command:
sudo apt-get remove wine*
I checked (using tab) and only wine, wine1.2 and wine-gecko where there to remove. After doing this I shutdown my computer. When I turned it on again everything was fine until I had to pass trough the login page. I've inserted my credentials and then when I clicked in "Login" it appears a dark screen and then again the Login screen.

May 14, 2010I installed lxde for my old P2 450 system but the er.. panel? I guess? Is removed where everything is. Is there a way to get it back? It happens everytime after the second login. How can I get these mic's to work w/o having to change the settings each time I want to switch mic's.. so that if the mic jack is plugged in, then the external mic works. and if the mic jack is unplugged, then the built in mic works.
Ubuntu :: Black Background After Changing Vnc Settings
Oct 12, 2010I was configuring the vnc server or remote desktop using the "gconf-editor" -- "desktop - gnome - remote_access" pane, and first I clicked on "disable background" to see if it was usefull or not to disable it (in terms of speed). It worked fine but sometimes when closing the connection, the background refuses to reenable, mantaining the black background...
That's ok, I decided to disable the feature and share via vnc the background as it is a wired net and I do not really need this feature.
My surprise is that now, whith the feature DISABLE (box unchecked), I cannot set a background, it is always black and I find no way to go back in this...
is this common, or something that can be "easily" fixed?

Jul 21, 2011I am trying to load up the NVidia driver in Fedora 15 and am stuck. After boot up the graphical login screen comes up fine but when I go to log in I get an error message and it asks me to try to login again. I need to be able to get into text mode so I can edit some files but I do not know how to do this other that starting in multi-uder mode by editing /etc/inittab (or in FC15, editing some links in /etc/systemd/system/). Is there a way to get to text mode from the graphical loginscreen or do I need to get a rescue disk and startup in rescue mode to change files?

May 13, 2010Is there a way to do an install from the iso image to a new disk (USB or whatever), without changing the grub settings on the systems existing hard drive? Every time I try to do a full install to a USB stick, it hoses grub on my hard disk, even though I specify the partitioning during the install, and leave /dev/sda untouched. This has happened now with both Karmic and Lucid.

Most of my users are getting along fine, but it seems every few days, i have to help someone who accidentally changed something, and now their account (or more rarely, the machine) is unusable, and has to be reset.
I know configuring /etc/sudoers is a huge step toward fixing my problem, but that still will not completely solve it. What I would like to do is prevent users from making ANY changes to the system (aside from their work files and the like), including themes, icons, desktop, background, etc.

Apr 27, 2010I needed to use Synaptic Package Manager to install an app, but the dialog box ("enter the Administrative Password") that pops up before you can use Synaptic doesn't recognize my password ("incorrect password). I tried typing it into a text editor and it's spelled right, caps lock not turned on or anything.
In Terminal, sudo recognizes it, and it is recognized when I log into Ubuntu. I'm the sole user, I have admin privileges, I've been doing admin things.
I just now did System > Administration > Users and Groups and got a dialog box saying
"Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Server ping error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0)"
Moving past that, I changed my user password, and Ubuntu authenticated it.

Jan 26, 2010Just got an HP dv6-2150 laptop. Dual boot with Windows 7 and 9.04 (9.10 will not work but that's a different story). The screen resolution is too low and is set at the highest option available (1024x768 which is a 4:3 aspect ratio). The HP uses the new Intel i3-330m chipset with on-board Intel HD graphics. The system is capable of 1366x768 resolution (16:9) - so how do I get it there? xorg.conf looks real generic - nothing specific to Intel.

Apr 15, 2011I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.
