Ubuntu :: PDF Note Taking And Zotero?
Feb 28, 2011
So, I read a lot of PDFs and I would like to be able to take notes on it and export as a pdf so it can be read by other PDF viewers. I've read a few older posts about this and xournal sounded like a good option. I've tried whytboard a little and didn't really seem like what I wanted. I also like zotero for research stuff and the note taking they have for webpage SS and documents is GREAT but I haven't been able to get pdf to work for note taking or maybe it isn't implemented yet? If there was a way to make Zotero notes to work with pdf that would be perfect!
Also, its been a few years since the last pdf notes post that I could find, what are people using these days? any noteworthy programs?

I have a problem with a note on the server. When I try to open it I get the message "OOPS-D-1594appserver96743". I can't open or delete this file anymore. Since I have this problem the sync with Tomboy also doesn't work. Is there way to delete this broken note on the server?

I have looked at heaps of the citation software and have settled on using Zotero for a few months to really get a feel for it. One major barrier is how to import my (large) pdf collection into it in one easy step.
Goal: have zotero import my PDF library in one batch. (ubuntu 9.04)
1. I have tried to do it 1 at a time. The sun will explode before I get that done.
2. I have tried this work around without success: Drag and drop from Konqueror (KDE 3.5, opensuse 11.1) fails for me, too. A workaround to allow drag N drop is to use Firefox as a file browser (enter "file://<location_to_file>" as the URL), and to drag and drop from there. [URL]
Firefox cant find the directory
3. I have tried drag and drop as suggested on the Zotero forums (largely for windows users). No luck.
4. I have searched the web, with no other suggestions that have worked.

I have to type a report and it would be nice not to have to do copy and paste with my whole bibliography. I am running.
Linux linux-xu0v 2.6.27.45-0.1-default #1 SMP 2010-02-22 16:49:47 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
OpenSuse 11.1 with KDE 3.5.10 (rev. 89)
Openoffice:3.2.1.3-1.1
Zotero 2.0.3
Zotero OO plugin: 3.0.7a
Java: 1.6.0.u20-0.1.1
The paths of the plugin are set to:
Java UNO path: file:///usr/lib64/ooo3/basis3.2/ure-link/share/java/
soffice executable path: file:///usr/lib64/ooo3/basis-link/program/
I am getting the following error message when I try to insert a reference:
Zotero OpenOffice Integration could not communicate with OpenOffice.org because the soffice executable directory specified in the Zotero OpenOffice Integration preferences does not contain a "soffice" file. See the Zotero word processor plugin troubleshooting page for information on how to locate the appropriate directory.
The zotero page does not give a great deal of help. Did somebody make this plugin work with OpenOffice in OpenSuse? Especially: are the paths indicated correct?

I was just wondering if Ubuntu developers were thinking now or in the future of introducing support for RIM BlackBerry devices?(I have previously read comments from Apple device users (iPods etc.) questioning why their devices were not supported so I suppose I am just evening things up a little for us BlackBerry users out there!

ever since i installed 11.1 last summer, there has been this four note chord that sounds off at seemingly random times. (it's not in 10.3 as i'm still running two of them.) i've not been able to find what it is and turn it off. at first i thought it was thunderbird, nope. then something in firefox, don't really think so. it's not a system sound that i can find. sure would like to disable it.

I'm trying to install fedora 10 onto the HP mini note, I have read how to install from another forum but it does not seem to work. I have setup a USB install using unetbootin. I only get white box lines for a mouse cursor the when it finally begins like it is about to boot into the live installation it freezes and can go no further.

I've discovered BasKet, and love it. However, I don't use KDE, and installing it on something else (CrunchBang in my case, which is Ubuntu-based) can mean a huge number of dependencies. (e.g. 28 MB just for kde-icons-oxygen, an icon theme). I don't know if most of them are actually needed though - relatively few "k..." programs are actually showing in the task manager when I run basket: kded, kdeinit, kio_file, klauncher, and knotify.

this morning after the latest updates for slackware-current my mrtg-2.15.2 from slackbuilds failed with
Code:
Bareword "P_DETACH" not allowed while "strict subs" in use at /usr/bin/../lib/mrtg2/MRTG_lib.pm line 1133.
Compilation failed in require at /usr/bin/mrtg line 89. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/mrtg line 89. As there's currently no newer version for mrtg on slackbuilds, i downloaded mrtg-2.17.0.tar.gz from oetiker's page and compiled it. Changing path in crontab and it works well.

I'm having an issue with my display. Every few minutes or so it dims and a 4 note chord is played.
I have isolated it to: "new-host-5org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelperQDBusConnection: system D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave".
And it most certainly is misbehaving. I'm running Jessie 8.2 with the KDE desktop on a HP Elitebook 8730w with NVIDIA Quadro G94GLM graphics.

I'm trying to figure out how to change the tomboy saving notation (.note) to (.txt). I'm fairly new to Linux so I may be wrong in thinking this is possible. However, if it is possible, a finger in the right direction would be appreciated.
PS: if it isn't possible, maybe there is a way to change the name of the actual .note files in ~/.local/share/tomboy/ to something more readable. Right now they show up like this:
8e824ab7-ba6f-4018-b74d-1a5a245a60bd.note Which is of course makes it difficult to determine which file I'm actually looking at.

I just installed Debian (lenny) on my HP 2133 Mini-Note (KX869AT). I've managed to get everything working, even the Broadcom wireless adapter, but the display is too large for the actual screen size. To get the screen to a more manageable resolution, I did copy the xorg.conf file of another HP 2133 Mini-Note user. (It was probably a different model; there are several versions of the HP 2133, hence the model number in the description.) Icons and things hide off-screen. The text on the GNOME panel is quite large.

I'm just starting out with Ubuntu 10.10 on the desktop, (got VPS experience) and I'm running into an issue when installing Ubuntu 64bit. One that I'm unable to reproduce with the 32bit (x84/i368) disk. Just to note, the ISO's and disks have been checked with matching MBR.
I'm able to run the live CD on both versions perfectly. However when I press next after the 3th step of installation (The one in which you can choose whether you want to install updates and 3th party software or not), the Ubuntu 64 bit version stalls. Ubuntu doesn't freeze or anything, but it just doesn't seem able to go to the next step. (Partitioning)The odd thing about is that I can access the step perfectly on the 32bit disk. Now here is the question..... What could be the clarification for this issue and would it be possible to resolve it? (If so, how?)
P.S. Attached you can find a dxdiag output of the laptop. It's an Acer Aspire 7520G.

I know other threads have raised similar issues to mine but I haven't been able to find in them a solution to my problem...
My laptop cannot complete its Ubuntu One sync - the syncdaemon never stops running at 100%. After a few hours, I give up and kill it off.
It writes large amounts to .cache/ubuntuone/log/syncdaemon.log for a while but then stops writing anything, even though it continues running at 100%.
Whilst it is working so hard (doing nothing?), the file manager is virtually unusable.
The problem started when I (a) installed Magicicada and (b) added another 700Mb folder to my synced folders.
My desktop PC doesn't have this problem. They are both very similar Ubuntu installations except it has a conventional hard disk whereas the problem laptop has SSD.

I can't my system because of this error: Code: linux-firmware: /lib/firmware/radeon/R700_rlc.bin exists in filesystem Note that in the beginning, it asks:
Code: :: Replace kernel26-firmware with core/linux-firmware? [Y/n] There are so many updates by now that the list fills in a few pages in the terminal! Also, I wonder why so many Arch updates get stuck or broken compared to almost any other distro? Is it poorly designed packages? Is it a design flaw in pacman/the package format?

The previous writer gave instructions for editing fstab. He said to enter something like the following line in fstab:
/dev/hdb1 /media/harddrive ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro,users,user_xattr,user 0 0
My partition is: /dev/sda7.
I created a folder in media: /media/8g
The file system is: ext2 (Do I need the "defults" instruction? What does this do?)
errors=remount-ro (I think I understand this)
[Code]....
He also said, after this was all done, to enter the command: sudo mount /media/[my new partition]
Since it's already mounted? What does this command accomplish?

Check if you are currently running another software management tool, e.g. Synaptic or aptitude. Only one tool is allowed to make changes at a time.

I am using VLC 1.1.9 on a Dell Latitude D600 with Ubuntu 11.04 and it is taking over my system. Every time I try to open a folder or a file VLC opens instead. I can dig down from "computer" to the folder or file but every other item from the "places" drop down menu will open VLC even if the folder is empty or contains non media files. I uninstalled VLC and the problem disappeared - naturally - but reappeared as soon as I reinstalled VLC. This doesn't happen on my AspireOne which also runs Ubuntu 11.04. Other than hardware, the only difference in the two machines that I can think might affect it is that the Dell has an upgraded version from Maverick whereas the netbook has a clean install of Naty. My only other thought was that is this an Intel / AMD thing as the Aspire has the netbook standard intel gfx chipset whilst the D600 uses an old ATI 9000 series gfx chipset and I did have to install some AMD 2d libs to get it to run smoothly. However I think that might be grasping at straws.
