Software :: Figure Out How To Change The Tomboy Saving Notation (.note) To (.txt)?

Jan 22, 2011

I'm trying to figure out how to change the tomboy saving notation (.note) to (.txt). I'm fairly new to Linux so I may be wrong in thinking this is possible. However, if it is possible, a finger in the right direction would be appreciated.

PS: if it isn't possible, maybe there is a way to change the name of the actual .note files in ~/.local/share/tomboy/ to something more readable. Right now they show up like this:

8e824ab7-ba6f-4018-b74d-1a5a245a60bd.note Which is of course makes it difficult to determine which file I'm actually looking at.

General :: Change Thunderbird's File Permissions When Saving Attachments?

Jun 29, 2010

I'm using Thunderbird 3.x on Ubuntu (Linux). When I save an attachment to my computer, the file gets saved with only the owner (me) having read/write permissions. In other words, the file gets saved as -rw

Frequently, I want my group to have permission, or to give read permission to everyone. Is there a way to do change Thunderbird's default file permissions so I don't have to do this manually every time?

General :: Linux Command Synopsis Notation?

Feb 1, 2011

I've recently started learning linux OS, and the most confusing for me is the notation in man pages or command synopsis. I was looking for some kind of guide describing it, but couldn't find any. Thing get even worse when there is no standard notation and it looks different from one command to another. In other words, I just want to understand what all these brackets '[ ]', dots like '...' pipelines '|', italic or UPPERCASE words, etc mean at all. I can't tell the difference between [DIRECTORY...] and [FILE]... What does it mean when there are three dots inside the brackets or outside of them? And so on. To conclude, all I need is a comprehensive description for the notation syntax adopted in linux world.

General :: Convert Windows Filenames To *nix Notation - Use It On Shell With Md5sum?

Aug 25, 2011

I have some checksums.md5 verification files from an ntfs external drive, but using windows notation: instead of /, spaces between file names (not escaped), reserved shell characters (like (, &, ', to name a few). The checksums.md5 has a bunch of checksums and filenames:

[code]...

I want to use this checksums.md5 to verify the files that I've copied to my machine: but I'm on a Linux, so I need to convert the names inside checksums.md5 from Windows to Linux to use the md5sum utility from the shell. The first line in my example would become: f12f75c1f2d1a658dc32ca6ef9ef3ffc My Windows & Files (2010)/[bak]/testing.wmv Is there some application for this (converting a file listing, from windows cmd notation, to linux shell notation) or will I need to create a bash script using sed that just "replaces" what is "wrong" with the filenames

Fedora :: Grub Used The Standard Drive Notation Such As /dev/sdax Instead Of The Current UUID?

Jul 14, 2010

I've been away from Fedora for a long time, since FC3/4. I seem to recall that at that time grub in Fedora used the standard drive notation such as /dev/sdax instead of the current UUID. Can anyone tell me why this change was made?

Seems to me that using UUIDs presents severe problems if a drive has to be replaced as the restore media (we all backup, don't we?) would not work without modification. How does one determine trhe UUID of a new drive to change the restore media? Sounds like a chickenand-egg routine. There must be some way which I haven't run accross yet. I do notice through experimentation that the standard notation still works, at least in /etc/fstab.

Ubuntu :: PDF Note Taking And Zotero?

Feb 28, 2011

So, I read a lot of PDFs and I would like to be able to take notes on it and export as a pdf so it can be read by other PDF viewers. I've read a few older posts about this and xournal sounded like a good option. I've tried whytboard a little and didn't really seem like what I wanted. I also like zotero for research stuff and the note taking they have for webpage SS and documents is GREAT but I haven't been able to get pdf to work for note taking or maybe it isn't implemented yet? If there was a way to make Zotero notes to work with pdf that would be perfect!

Also, its been a few years since the last pdf notes post that I could find, what are people using these days? any noteworthy programs?

Software :: Installing BasKet Note Pads On A Non-KDE System?

Feb 9, 2010

I've discovered BasKet, and love it. However, I don't use KDE, and installing it on something else (CrunchBang in my case, which is Ubuntu-based) can mean a huge number of dependencies. (e.g. 28 MB just for kde-icons-oxygen, an icon theme). I don't know if most of them are actually needed though - relatively few "k..." programs are actually showing in the task manager when I run basket: kded, kdeinit, kio_file, klauncher, and knotify.

I have isolated it to: "new-host-5org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelperQDBusConnection: system D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave".

And it most certainly is misbehaving. I'm running Jessie 8.2 with the KDE desktop on a HP Elitebook 8730w with NVIDIA Quadro G94GLM graphics.

Debian :: Distorted Screen Resolution On HP 2133 Mini-Note (KX869AT)

I just installed Debian (lenny) on my HP 2133 Mini-Note (KX869AT). I've managed to get everything working, even the Broadcom wireless adapter, but the display is too large for the actual screen size. To get the screen to a more manageable resolution, I did copy the xorg.conf file of another HP 2133 Mini-Note user. (It was probably a different model; there are several versions of the HP 2133, hence the model number in the description.) Icons and things hide off-screen. The text on the GNOME panel is quite large.

Fedora :: Fedora 13 File Permission Notation - Dot Meaning?

Jul 11, 2010

I may not have noticed in other Fed releases, but in Fed 13 I am seeing a dot at the end of all file permissions. Example:

[pjs@linux ~]$ ls -ld Documents
drwxr-xr-x. 62 pjs pjs 4096 Jul 11 09:53 Documents

Even on files I create myself:

[pjs@linux ~]$ touch foo
[pjs@linux ~]$ ls -l foo
-rw-rw-r--. 1 pjs pjs 0 Jul 11 10:46 foo

It is the same throughout the fs. I have disabled as much of SELinux as I can. What does the dot mean?

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Reproduce With The 32bit (x84/i368) Disk. Just To Note, The ISO's And Disks Have Been Checked With Matching MBR?

Mar 16, 2011

I'm just starting out with Ubuntu 10.10 on the desktop, (got VPS experience) and I'm running into an issue when installing Ubuntu 64bit. One that I'm unable to reproduce with the 32bit (x84/i368) disk. Just to note, the ISO's and disks have been checked with matching MBR.

I'm able to run the live CD on both versions perfectly. However when I press next after the 3th step of installation (The one in which you can choose whether you want to install updates and 3th party software or not), the Ubuntu 64 bit version stalls. Ubuntu doesn't freeze or anything, but it just doesn't seem able to go to the next step. (Partitioning)The odd thing about is that I can access the step perfectly on the 32bit disk. Now here is the question..... What could be the clarification for this issue and would it be possible to resolve it? (If so, how?)

P.S. Attached you can find a dxdiag output of the laptop. It's an Acer Aspire 7520G.
