Was trying to write a shell script that has if conditional statements to decide different arguments for a command.Basically:

I am not able to execute a multiple sed statement using pipe filters in a variable. i am trying to extract a path from a file and then working on that path to change a few letters within the path by going through another sed statement.

I need to create a single line of output from multiple and variable lines of input in a Linux bash shell script.
My input file looks like this:
Where there may be any number of umsecondaryphonenumber lines; if there is not a umsecondaryphonenumber line for a telephonenumber, I don't want to write any output.
So, the output file should look like:
The script I have so far is:
My question is - how do print each of the elements of an array in one record - i.e. what do I put in place of howdoiprintarray?
For example, I have a text file with data which lists numerical values from two separate individuals
Code:
Person A
100
200
300
400
500
600
700
800
900
1000
1100
1200
Person B
1200
1100
1000
900
800
700
600
500
400
300
200
100
How would I go about reading the values for each Person, then being able to perform mathematical equations for each Person (finding the sum for example)?
I am trying to think of a logic where my file contains some data I had to read and do some processing. Issue is that file contains data multiple times. For example:
:::::::::::
var1=value1
var2=value2
[code].....
I have to read first paragraph of variables and do some processing and then move on until the end of file. Variable names are same in whole file but for each paragraph the value is different. I can't think of a logic to attain this task. How can I do it? It should be a simple bash script, but I am not able to work out.
I want to remove duplicate or multiple similar lines from multiple files. I.e. if I have four files file1.txt file2.txt file3.txt and file4.txt and would like to find and remove similar lines from all these files keeping only one line from these similar lines. I only that uniq can be used to remove similar lines from a sorted file.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi am on processing text tasks And i found that if you assign a text to a variable is chomp'ed automatically the newline
Code:
variable=$(cat file.txt)
The problem is i can only access the items/lines using:
Code:
for line in $variable
do
echo $line
# Other commands
done
how do i convert this to an indexed array. More importantly, how do i get access to individual $line[0], ..., $line[n] Another thing, if the file.txt, has lines with spaces it is a mess using the for...in..., but echoing prints line by line...o_0
I have been experiencing a problem where the screen loads and after initial first few lines breaks up into multiple repetitions of lines. Reloading helps but has to be repeated when pageing down. Mail is no problem; it is supplied by my network provider. OS is openSUSE 11.2 which I update when advised. Below is a sample from the error console:

On one of my servers I see this when I log in. What does this mean and how can I get it to go away? Everything seems to work fine, but none of my other machines give this error.

For example:

Changing $files to "$files" eliminate these problems but causes that whole content of variable is treated as one string (one execution of loop).

How to using shell script?
Code:
ls Again the command can be stored in a variable and then executed. Like
Code:
var=ls
&var
The above two codes are the same. The problem occurs when we try to pipeline it. Consider the following problem:
Code:
ls | grep *
works fine...but when we try to store it in a variable and run the command there is an error.
Code:
var="ls|grep *"
$var
how to store this kind of commands in a variable?
I have a text file i that has a mailTo: NAME in it. In a bash script i need to extract NAME and put it in a $variable to use. How do i do this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried using the tail command in my shell script and storing that value in a variable a but an error keeps coming. Is there any other way to store the output of a command into a variable. Cannot Read text from text file and store it in a variable using shell script. The thing is I need a number from the file new.txt and use that number in my script
#!/bin/bash
a = `tail -1 new.txt|head -n 1`

I want to store the result of wc -l as a variable so I can use it later in my script...so far unsuccessfully.
I have tried this:
set `echo awk '{ print $1, $6}' | wc -l` | echo $1
but it is far from working.
I need to store the output of bitset() in a variable ... is it possible in c++?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSuppose I want to account number of files beginning with abc , I can use "ls 'abc* | grep abc | wc -l", this will return me a number.
I want to store this number in a variable, say var1, so I tried
1. "ls 'abc* | grep abc | wc -l |read var1", but this didn't work as var1 has no value somehow.
2. var1='ls 'abc* | grep abc | wc -l', this just assign the entire string "ls 'abc* | grep abc | wc -l" to var1, which is not I wanted.
I don't want to store the value to a temporary file and then read the value from that file. I think there should be a direct way to get the value, but don't know how. I know in tcsh, one can just use set var1='ls 'abc* | grep abc | wc -l', but it also doesn't work in bash. Can anyone give any clue about this?
I am trying to write a bash script to open 1 screen session with multiple windows... each one running a different service. Is this possible? I tried several things, and I can start up multiple sessions really easy.. but not 1 session with multiple windows...
I want this so I can attach to that session and quickly move between the different windows.
I often use the rpl command to make changes to multiple html files at once. For example:
rpl -R '<br />' '<br /><br />' mydirectory However, I haven't been able to figure out how to change multiple lines. For example, let's say I want to change all occurrences of :
<br />
<br />
to:

I've tried
rpl -R '<br />
<br />' '<br />' mydirectory
but that didn't work. how to do this with rpl or some other way?

I'm trying to create a backup script. For my second version, I want to make a GUI that will ask the user three things:
1. which folders should be excluded
2. where to store the backup
3. the user's email
I need to store this input, and later input the values into variables in my script. How do I go about doings this?
I have written quite a few separate bash & scripts and php scripts that up to now I have run from cron jobs. However I have to estimate how long each takes to run, before running the next and so it probably takes much longer than necessary to run them all. They have to run in order.
Now there are so many I am thinking it would be better to have a master bash script that would run one after the other, but I am not sure how to get the master script to wait before starting to run the next script. Is this possible and is there a command that will make the script wait between bash and php scripts , for them to finish, before running the next?
I'm making a script I want to be able to just call (ie, rclick instead of ./rclick) where do I put it?
~/bin?
/bin?
/usr/bin?
Also, how do I pass a variable to the script (rclick 10 will rightclick 10 times) (Found, so simple... $1)Lastly, can I force it to run on CPU2? CPU1 is completley locked up if I run this on it... Or can I make it use less cpu cycles?
In GUI style editors, you can generally select multiple lines, press tab a few times to move all the lines across (or shift-tab to go back). I have no idea how to do this in VIM.I googled around and couldn't find any straight answer to I came here.
