Ubuntu :: Nvidia Drivers Not Working In 9.10 On An Asus Ul80vt Laptop

Mar 7, 2010

I have an Asus UL80vt laptop. This laptop has an integrated (Intel) as well as a discrete (Nvidia 210m) graphics card.

I want to use the nvidia proprietary drivers because from what I understand, it's the easiest way to set up dual monitors (I have an external monitor). I installed the latest nvidia driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53. When I try to run the NVidia X Server Settings GUI, it tells me that "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. "

I checked out my xorg.conf and changed the device driver to 'nvidia' instead of 'nv'. Curiously, when I run nvidia-xconfig, it changes the intel device to 'nvidia' which is a problem. So i skipped running that and just stuck with my xorg.conf. When I run startx, I get a message saying "failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:1:0:0".

I've combed through multiple forums which state different kinds of solutions and I've tried different kernel options such as 'vmalloc=512m' or 'noapic' to no avail.

P.S. I've attached my xorg.conf file

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Newer NVidia Drivers Won't Work With Asus Laptop

May 10, 2010

There are currently two options for nVidia drivers in Lucid Lynx, 173, and current. With the video card in my laptop, 9650m GT, the 173 drivers work but Docky is painfully, unusably slow. With the "current" drivers, Docky is fine but I get progressively worse and worse static-type lines across my screen and eventually it the machine restarts itself. I've tried installing drivers manually but they won't compile against the kernel.

Before installing Lucid, I had 9.04 Jaunty installed, and Docky (at the time still merged with gnome-do) worked without a hitch. I ran into this error first when I installed 9.10 and decided to go back to 9.04, hoping that it would be fixed. I can't remember which version of the nVidia drivers I was using in Jaunty, but is there any way to go back to those drivers in Lucid?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Internet Not Working - Asus Apire Laptop

May 1, 2011

I have a 6 month old Acer (sorry not Asus as per the heading) Aspire laptop. I downloaded Ubuntu and cannot connect via wireless. It works fine via ethernet. Having spent several hour reading this forum, other web pages and the help file, I actually still have not got a clue either as to what the actual problem is or how to begin solving it. Is there a simple answer? If not, I'll go back to windows 7 as Ubuntu seems anything but the promises made.

Ubuntu :: Nvidia Drivers Not Working Right On 10.04

Dec 5, 2010

I just did what i did below reinstalled them and seems to be working again. I installed the drivers then updated my ubuntu install (fresh install) which i read in another thread that if something updates the kernel or whatever it seems to below out your nvidia install on 10.04 and 10.10 i think if i remember right.

Ok so i haven't been using ubuntu in a very long time. Seen 10.04 lts came out and decided to wander back (xp is just getting to old and seems to be getting more and more sluggish everytime i upgrade to newer and newer hardware lol think no one is really supporting it anymore or barely and i'm to dam cheap to buy 7 lol)

anyway so i downloaded the newest geforce drivers from nvidia.

I followed instructions i had seen on here can't find the thread now.

anyway I shut down nouveau or whatever its called.

Then i did a alt+ctrl+F1

cd Desktop

tried using sudo service gdm stop but it don't work so i did sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop that worked but recommends the way that won't work above lol least for me.

Then i had the nvidia driver on my desktop so i did sudo sh N (then tab) enter. it started the driver up said it could not install the application or something i forget eh i'll find out but asked if i would like to continue. I said yes and installed the driver everything seems somewhat ok after that then i restart my machine and bam says i'm in low graphics mode now, and my x-server for nvidia don't have any options in it at all to modify anything....

I'm using NVIDIA-Linux-x86-260.19.21.run Nvidia driver i have should i try the older one? if i can find it 250 something i think it was?

Just curious if there is another method i can try to get a driver in. I don't like using old drivers i tend to like the hot new stuff either beta or latest solid release.

Ubuntu :: Nvidia GTX 460 Drivers In 10.10 Not Working?

Jan 18, 2011

I just upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04. I used to have a manual install of the nvidia drivers configured (by downloading binary from Nvidia website) but right before I upgraded I used nvidia-uninstall to remove it. Upon rebooting into 10.10 I went to Additional drivers and activated nvidia-current. After I rebooted I still had no driver, so I looked in the Additional Drivers pane again. It says Nvidia-current is activated but not currently in use. Then I went to a terminal and typed:

sudo nvidia-xconfig. Thinking it would reconfigure X to work with my 460, however it instead said: command not found What's going on here?

Ubuntu Installation :: NVIDIA Drivers Not Working After 11.04 Update?

Apr 28, 2011

Tonight I upgraded to 11.04. Once I had finished the upgrade, I restarted my computer as it told me too. When I got past the ubuntu 11.04 (purple background orange dots), it simply went to the terminal and asked me to log in. I tried to restart the X server with "sudo service gdm restart" but no display popped up. I happened to have a few NVIDIA drivers in my downloads file also so I gave these a try, but the "install script" failed.

After all this I booted Ubuntu in graphic failsafe mode. I then decided to see what would happen if I removed the proprietary driver. Upon doing this and rebooting my Ubuntu booted into graphical mode "yay!".So without the Nvidia drivers I can finally see something other than terminal, but, I need those NVIDIA drivers for my work. So what can I do? I have tried installing the new NVIDIA linux drivers from the NVIDIA website, and have tried Installing the recommended driver via "additional drivers", but both have resulted in my being stuck in terminal.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: HDMI Sound Not Working With NVidia ION Drivers

Jun 4, 2010

I have a zotac IONITX motherboard with HDMI video. The video seems fine, but I haven't been able to get the sound working through the HDMI cable. Even the little speaker at the top is gone. It was working fine when I had speakers hooked to the motherboard. I have installed the latest 256 driver from nvidia. If I run 'aplay -l' I get this:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
lspci -v gives :

Memory at fae78000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

I don't know if this is important, but I noticed that it says its running an intel driver for my nvidia sound. Could this be the problem and if so, How do I fix it? Also, if I click on system->preferences->sound it comes up with a dialog box that says that its waiting for the sound system to come up. Why I am not getting any HDMI sound or even the little speaker icon at the top?

Fedora Hardware :: Nvidia Drivers From RPMfusion Working But Slow In F14?

Nov 3, 2010

After upgrading from Fedora 13 to 14 via preupgrade (works well), the nvidia drivers for my "nVidia Corporation GT218 [NVS 3100M] (rev a2)" (it's a ThinkPad T410S) work - including 3D, but every thing paints slowly. The Desktop Effects work, but everything visual (menus painting, dragging windows, etc.) are all noticeably slow (and worked fine in F13).

Update - apparently this issue is related to the GTK theme in use. The default (Fedora, or Clearlooks, or a few others) results in this slow behaviour. Other themes, like Nodoka and a few others perform fine.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unable To Set Nvidia Drivers - Dual Monitor Without Proprietary Drivers?

Apr 8, 2010

I have been using ubuntu for quite a long time, and for the first time, I am now unable to set nvidia drivers to work. I have just install ubuntu 9.10 amd64 on an AMD 64 athlong X2 with a GEForce 6500 nvidia card.

The only reason I need the proprietary drivers is to use two monitors.

I am going crazy, I have tested everything I have found on the web. I have tried all the nvidia drivers version, I have tried envyng, ... but nvidia do not work!!

I am trying Xinerama with nv, but it does not work either!!!

Here is my xorg.conf file in which I have tried to use nv driver to set dual monitor. X fails to load and it says that screen 0 is deleted, that devices are found but there are no matches in the config file. Any clue?

1.) I've installed the ubuntu 10.10 64bit for i386 in an oracle virtualBox..

2.) downloaded from nvidia.com "NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.44.run"

Debian :: Switch To 5 In AUSU UL80VT?

Dec 11, 2010

I am a regular user of Ubuntu in my laptop of ASUS UL80VT. The problem is, specially from the version 10 ubuntu has become somewhat unstable(however ridiculous it sounds). And I was thinking about switching to a serious distro anyway, because I think I have crossed the threshold of linux newbie. Problem is, since ubuntu itself is a fork of debian, can the same problems arise in debian too? Besides since I am running a laptop, driver issues are a concern. Ubuntu did not gave me much trouble with driver, except couple of function keys. The question is how much support I can get from debian 5 for my laptop. Since its karnel is a bit old, and my laptop is a new model. There is a good chance that lots of incompatibilities will arise. In a forum thread I read people referring to version 6 for the laptop? Can someone clarify the issue. I can compile the latest karnel after installation of debian 5 if thats an issue. Still, will it be a proper remedy?
