OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Install 11.4 On Notebook - Dvd Drive Is Dead
Mar 22, 2011Old hp notebook (HP520) and want to install some linux distro on it to use it for basic web browsing and word processing. After a bit of research decided to begin with opensuse.
Only problem i cant seem to install it on the notebook. The dvd drive is dead and hence i wanted to install suse through a usb drive (2GB). Downloaded the appropriate live CD and used it to make a bootable usb disk as per instructions on opensuse.org. The drive boots up fine but no matter what i do i the next screen is always a black screen with a blinking underscore and nothing seems to happen. However compatibility reports indicate that suse should install hassle free and everything should work!
Already attempted text mode and safe settings installations. Nothing has worked so far. XP seems to run perfectly fine on it.

OpenSUSE Install :: Getting 11.3 In A Viewsonic VNB101 Notebook?
Jul 29, 2010I'm trying to install 11.3 in a Viewsonic VNB101 notebook.I've been trying a long time now, 11.3 was still in ms6, as I recall. I tried the dd, the imagewriter, kiwi, unetbootin, Win32DiskImager and maybe something more. Lately I'm trying PXE booting, but I cant manage anything. I even gave a shoot to the new grub2 advertised feature, of booting an iso from the same machine. No luck. Maybe its time to mention that I had already successfully installed fedora and now the kubuntu 10.04, which is running ok, but its not suse. The weirdest thing is that I can have a bootable pendrive that looks fine. My other two desktop pc's, boot it and they are willing to install or run live.
I've tried the full dvd (586) version, of course after isohybrid was ran. I also tried many of the factory isos. But the one I'm obsessed with, is openSUSE-11.3-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso. All of them where definately checksumed. What the heck is going wrong with this notebook? Bios version is InsydeH20 D0.05T45.55.03, the setup utility in rev. 3.5. Cpu is Intel Atom cpu n280 A friend of mine, installed 11.3 successfully with an external dvd-rom drive, but he lives pretty far and I cant afford buying one of my own. I'm a user of OpenSuse since version 6.3. It is used as my primary OS all this time, on my desktop machines. I wont give up.
OpenSUSE Install :: Notebook Shuts Down During Work?
Apr 19, 2011I installed openSUSE 11.4 on my notebook (Packard-Bell EasyNote LJ61) and started the system. I logged in and KDE appears. After some minutes, I started firefox and thunderbird and the computer shuts down. After resarting, I installed the fglrx driver.
After restarting again, I let the desktop stay, and let him from 16:30 oclok to 18:00. He stayed so. Then I started firefox and thunderbird and the system shuts down again....

Jul 9, 2011Just installed and started to use the suse11.4 two weeks ago when my Win7 broke down. Now I got a new Win7 recovery disc from my laptop manufacturer, and want to install a Win7 accompanying with the suse11.4.
My question is how to clear up a free space in HD to install win7? Currently, I have 3 partitions that are sda1, sda2 and sda3 with space 2G(swap), 20G(root) and 270G(home) respectively. I want to free up half space from sda3 to install Win7, how to do it without delete the data on it? One weird thing is that my HD totally is 320G, but when I installed SUSE, only 300G was usable and the other 20G is missing until now. The fdisk -l command info. is showed below:

Feb 25, 2011Currently I am running a dual boot with Windows 7 and openSUSE 11.3. Windows has two partitions, one for the system partition and another for the OS. I have 3 Linux partitions (swap, root, and home). Obviously I am running GRUB to boot, but this seems to be impacting my ability to install Windows 7 SP1. I would like to revert back to the Windows boot loader, install the Service Pack, and then revert back to GRUB. How do I do this?

Dec 24, 2009If I understand correctly, there is no more "Install Linux as a second OS, and Windows will run as it is. Linux won't disturb it". If Grub is installed on MBR, Windows 7 will not install service pack.
If the MBR is left untouched during the installation of Linux, the active flag has to be switched from Windows's partition to Linux's partition. This again will prohibit Windows 7 from installing a service pack. Thus installing Linux as a second OS and giving the computer to somebody who is not expert in partitioning and booting will lead to trouble if Windows is regularly used. Is this correct, and is there a solution as to not creating worries for the Windows users by installing Linux?

Feb 22, 2011I am new to linux , I installed Suse 11.3 a week ago on my new iMac 27'' core i7 and my experience have been wonderful so far. However I would like to install windows beside Suse (for games and windows only apps). I used bootcamp to create a 200G partition for Suse, and I would like to partition the bootcamp further to install windows beside Suse, and choose the OS at boot time using rEFIt. I searched google and couldn't find a guide for installing windows 7 when linux is installed first.
1- I want to learn how to partition the boot camp drive using suse to create an empty partition for windows install.
2- I want to learn how to install windows 7 on the mentioned partition without harming any boot configurations, as I said I want to be able to choose from the OSes at boot time using rEFIt bare in mind that the current installed OSes are suse 11.3 and OS X.

Mar 29, 2011Hardware issue forced me to restore Win7. Installed EasyBCD to boot into openSUSE, no work. Boot puppy, it shows space where SUSE should be as unallocated space. I think Puppy doesn't see ext4 though. Can't boot live KDE off USB for some reason, though I originally installed from that exact medium. Tried ACPI=off and nomodeset. Error says trouble mounting clic filesystem, mounted as read only. Something like that. Then reboot 120secs, which it never actually does. I don't want to reinstall SUSE if I don't have to.

Apr 3, 2011I have an ASUS N82 model notebook with Windows 7 and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 GPU. I downloaded the openSUSE-11.4-DVD-x86_64.iso file and tried to run it from my desktop using Daemon Tools LITE software. The install program for the installer started up and let me progress all the way to the final screen at which point it starts extracting files and then I almost immediately get this error message: "Cannot exec bcdedit.exe"
I have done everything I know to do to make sure that I am signed in and running the install as an administrator. I even ran the command prompt as an administrator to make sure that I could run bcdedit.exe myself and it ran fine.

Jan 4, 2010I decided to install windoze 7 and it finally worked. It was complicated, I have two HDD's on cable select and the one I wanted M$ installed on was second in the series. So I changed that around and it finally installed. I then changed it back to the way it was and now of course grub works for SUSE but not M$. I get error #13. My Windows drive also does not show up in sysinfo:/. I went to terminal and ran fdisk -l and

Aug 21, 2010well, gonna straight-explain what I`ve here: had a Win7 64bit installed machine and created a D drive as I was intended to install Suse there (so it`s `Extended`) after succesfully installed SLED and finally restarted the laptop to see use Win7 again there was no Loader for me to choose which Operation System (I have another machine with XP,Ubuntu and Pardus - never had sucha problem)then I had to chose SLED of course but this time it didn`t bring me to the login page but to the Command Line of SLED, and the thing is that I can`t use command line on linux. tried several times and with failsafe login but stıll having command line and there is no Win7 to run on Loader.

Apr 1, 2011I am trying to Dual-boot Windows & and OpenSUSE 11.4, and have run into walls all over the place. Here is what I did:
1. Windows 7 was already installed. (Don't like it, freezes all the time)
2. Installed OpenSUSE using default partition options.
3. Booted into OpenSUSE with no problem
4. Tried booting into Windows, no joy.
5. Got that figured out, now I can get into Windows.
6. GRUB is gone, so now I can't get back into OpenSUSE.

Aug 7, 2010borked the bootloader by my own doing. When I got this machine, I had a single HDD. I partitioned it with a primary partition for Windows, followed by an extended partition with swap, /home/ and /, as well as a FAT32 partition for "general" data. (this was before NTFS write support was common) This worked well with the Win2K install. Eventually, I added a second HDD, which became part data storage, and part Windows XP install. I eventually put Win7 on it, and pulled the other HDD during setup so that the boot order of the drives determines whether I boot Win7/XP or get GRUB.
However, my "data" partition was not visible in Win7... It shows up as an unknown FS in the disk management. OK, I thought. I used Paragon partitioning software to move the "data" partition out of the extended partition and make it a primary. I could now access it from Win7. I didn't realize I had GRUB set to boot from the extended partition, so now when I boot from that HDD, I get "no operating system". No problem, I thought. I'll pop in the install CD (NET), use it to boot the installed 11.3, and run the boot loader setup. Nope- setup just hangs. Tried it with an 11.2 DVD... doing a "boot installed system" nets me a few moments of searching, "evaluating root partition", and then "no valid linux install found". Trying the boot loader reinstall from there nets me an "error changing to target environment" and the install fails.
I can still mount the / partition via rescue mode and all files appear to be intact, so I don't think I've lost any data... just grub/the MBR is borked. I've already moved the data partition back in to the extended partition but no luck. Still the same story... thus I'm stuck booting Windows until I fix this.

Dec 5, 2009I am trying to install the latest SUSE in a virtual machine created on 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate. When the CD loads in the VM's console it says 'This is a 32 bit computer. You cannot use 64 bit software on it'. I am running the free VmWare Server 2.0. Windows 7 sys info clearly shows it as 64 bit OS, and it is running on i7-720 (definitely a quad core 64 bit proc).

May 26, 2011I'm trying to dual-boot Windows 7 with openSuSE 11.4, i was told that i should install SuSE after windows 7 as it takes care of the boot-loader and automatically detects my windows installation and not vice-versa,
But that is not true in my case.
So i had 2 hard disks one had windows 7 installed and one was empty so i decided that i should get openSuSE 11.4 on the empty hard disk and dual-boot it with windows 7 (that i already had installed). Downloaded the DVD, put it on a USB and installed SuSE on the other hard disk normally, it detected my windows installation on my main hard disk but i didn't touch that, only formatted my other hard disk to ext4
After the installation it booted automatically into SuSE, but now every time on a fresh restart the system boots automatically into windows. Methods i have already tried to resolve this and it didn't work:
1. Booted from the DVD and selected an "Upgrade" not "New Installation" so i could boot again into my SuSE installation which did work, checked my "Boot Loader" options from YaST and checked the "Boot from MBR" option instead of the "Boot from root partition" option, That Did NOT work.
2. Used the same method to Boot into SuSE with the "Upgrade" Option opened up the terminal and tried to install grub manually again using this link
