I installed Xubuntu 10.04 on an old HP and I decided to swap the hard drive to an Old Dell Dimension 2300. Once I did that I logged in and continued to do stuff. I got a few Instant messages before I noticed I had no sound. I tryed to watch a video and I get the same result. I typed the following;

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm just getting started with Ubuntu 64-Bit. Basically, I have Totem Movie Player and VLC Media Player installed and every time I watch a movie in either one of them. If I tab out of them or minimize them, when I bring the media player back up the screen is black. The sound still works perfectly but I can't see the movie and I've tried several media players out and they all do the same thing. Basically I can't multitask or bring up anything else while I watch a movie or I have to restart the player because of the media screen going black.
I'm not sure if my computer specs will help but here they are:
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid 64-Bit
Intel Xeon X3210 2.13GHz Quad
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
ATI Radeon 4870 512MB Videocard
My system froze when watching a flash video and I had to do a hard reset. Now when I boot into ubuntu I can't open the software centre or the update manager. Is there a way to check what's wrong or a way to reinstall everything from terminal? Synpatic still opens and works.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy system just freezes randomly. It happens about once a day, which is really often imho. It usually happens when I'm watching a video in fullscreen and it suddenly stops. I can't alt-tab or escape out of fullscreen, my mouse doesn't work and the keyboard is unresponsive. I'm forced to restart by pressing my computer's power button. This happens in both vlc and kmplayer and it also happened a few times when i was not watching a video. I was just on firefox, browsing the internet.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm new to Ubuntu but I installed Ubuntu 11.04 with no problems. I activated the recommended drivers for my laptop. My laptop is: Acer Aspire 7540G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 video card and AMD Athlon II X2 processor. So the problems comes very very often. I watch videos on fullscreen or I leave them playing in ...... While playin a video the laptop just freezes. Everything stops working. I think this problems comes up may be every 30-40 minutes of watching a movie. I'm not a fan of holding the shut down button for 10 seconds every 40 minutes so I'll be very grateful if someone helps. I've removed Syn to Vblank from the CompizConfig because otherwise Ubuntu runs really slow on my computer and the videos are playing very slow and with very bad quality. When i removed it everything began to run faster but now I've this problem with the freezing... Any ideas ?

When I watch videos with Totem or VLC, the monitor doesn't register any activity, and goes into power saving mode (goes blank) after a certain amount of time (about 10-15 mins). How can I prevent this from happening? (I just switched over to Fedora from Arch, using GDM and Openbox. I didn't have this problem on that installation, so it's probably not hardware related.)

During watching video in Kaffeine the powersave will start and after 30seconds will switch my computer off. When I watch video in Xine I do not have this problem (screen saver timeout is set to 10 seconds). I have not found this option in xine-config.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running openSUSE 11.1 on a Pentium Dual Core 2.5 (E5200) Processor, 2GB RAM and an NVidia 8400GS PCI Express display card.When I intitially installed my system I also installed VLC media player, at that time it was version 1.0.1, Mplayer and SMplayer a few codecs for K3B, handbrake for DVD ripping etc. That was also the only time since my computer has been online, i have never updated it since. And it had no problems whatsoever. Among other things I use my system to watch DVD's. I watched many DVD's and video clips flawlessly.
Now all of a sudden when watching DVD's and video clips the DVD playback flickkers red (the color red). I am not sure what causes it and it is very irritating. It flickkers even more with video clips. With a DVD it dissappears after a while but as soon as you move your mouse pointer or click on the screen it starts to flickker red again.I thought it was my NVidia card that might be faulty, but I booted up from a Puppy linux live-cd and I played a DVD from there and it works 100%.
i tried kde settings: disabled screen saver, disabled monitor power management. nothing worked. even i tried to find something in yast -- no luck. actually screen goes black after about 10 mins of inactivity which is annoying while watching in ex. videos. playing kaffeine is ok - i think it's because kaffeine makes "fake mouse movements". suse 11.3, linux 2.6.34.4-0.1-default x86_64, kde: 4.4.4 (kde 4.4.4) "release 2". adm athlon dual core 4450e (2.3ghz), 2 gb ram, geforce 9600 gso 512 with nvidia driver.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been trying out the new Slackware 13.37 and I have found that KDE will crash anytime I am watching a full screen video with Firefox 4 and attempt to adjust the audio levels using the keyboard buttons. If I use the mouse to adjust the audio level through the audio mixer gui, it seems to work fine. Both of my laptops ( a Gateway MP6954 and a Dell Inspiron 1520) are exhibiting this same problem. Both have the Adobe Flash Player version 10.2.159.1 installed.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I play large HD videos in mplayer, the video and sound frequently get out of sync, and the video plays a little strangely (occasionally speeding up and occasionally slowing down).
I think it's because mplayer is only running on a single core. As I've got a quad-core processor, it seems inefficient. I've seen that there is theoretically a way to get mplayer to work with multicore setups, but it requires compiling with different options. That'd take me a little while to work through.
Ideally there would be a pre-compiled version in the software centre, or a player which has support built in (again, ideally in the software centre). Is there such a thing available?
i have a problem with the flash videos, i have installed the new version of ubuntu 10.10, twice, and the problem persist, i have proved with the flash-plugin and de adobe flashplugin, but i don't have any result, i have an intel dual core 2.5, with a geforce 9500gt of 1gb, i probed installing the swf and gnash, but the ..... videos can see now but the facebook and other sites can see it with this programs, i have tried to disabling the compiz efects and nothing, and the option of other posts of disable the hardware aceleration i can't select it because this problem don't let me see the configuration opcion of the flash videos.

I have looked into the fixes of the 64bit MMPEG upgrades and gone through what steps I can find to fix the problem, although even after going through the re-compile in konsole, as well as then removing it and trying again using K Package Manager, I still have no Audio with my Video when recording in Cheese.Cheese records the video in ogv format, and I have attempted to convert the ogv file to avi format using VLC. I am able to watch the video in both VLC and Dragon Player... but no sound, just video. I have used Cheese to record video's using Ubuntu 8.10 onwards, but my current Kubuntu 10.04.01 (and when I had 10.04) has no sound in the recordings. I have not changed microphone, and I have checked all my connections. I can hear voice in the speakers through the microphone. I am using on board sound, which I have no other issues with. The error message I get tells me that my MMPEG install lacks the AAC Audio Codec.
my vlc player suddenly decided to start de-syncing my sound and video. Switching vlc to asla output corrects this, but also makes the player go mute whenever you pause and resume a video. Totem is still working fine, but I really like vlc.

Have used DeVeDe to make DVD suitable for standalone player in lounge the player plays various formats. the problem is as the title suggests A/V not in sync. It was the first time I had ever attempted to create anything like this. Iam sure I set DeVeDe correctly, the file plays properly on the pc though.

The program opens, I do a search and then click on a item I can see the gasgauge rolling as if the item is playing but there is no sound no video. And no error messages.
