OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot After Zypper Upgrade / Showing Black Screen?

Apr 14, 2011

I could upgrade openSUSE 11.4 on my desktop but when trying to do the same procedure on my girlfriend's laptop, after the zypper update part (and the reboot asked), now we can get it to boot.

After selecting suse from GRUB it shows some code (too fast to be read) then black screen forever. I erased the VGA option before booting and now it gets stuck in

Code:
[0.490266][<c02037a6>] kernel_thread_helper+0x6/0x10
We don't have any idea of what to do ;__;

OpenSUSE Install :: Getting Blank/black Screen After Performing Upgrade From 11.2

Sep 8, 2010

During the upgrade process, all the files appeared to install correctly and the computer rebooted as expected. It then showed the openSUSE splash screen but eventually that went dark and there was no display. Rebooting again did not help. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1 results in a corrupted display. I'm guessing this is an issue with the video driver? Not sure how to troubleshoot when I can't even get a terminal window open!

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot 11.4 - Screen Goes Black?

Jun 2, 2011

I very frustrated at this point. I have tried to boot OpenSUSE 11.4 from the usb flash drive iso and CD iso. After I restart my computer the boot menu comes up and I click the boot option and the screens loads a bit and then goes black. I have also tried the text installer, but that doesn't work either. I know the problem must be my graphics chip. I have a integrated Intel HD Graphics chip. My laptop is a Gateway NV79. How can I get the graphics to work?

I've tried everything I can think off. I'm not the most computer savvy so if someone replies I would appreciate a dumb-down explanation on what to do with clear steps, if possible. Note: I'm dual booting with windows 7. The graphics problem is not just OpenSUSE. I tried Ubuntu 11.04, Kubuntu 11.04, Fedora 15 and they all have the same problems. In Fedora 15, I was able to boot in but I got an error message that said Gnome 3 fallback and I couldn't get the graphics to change to standard mode

General :: Can't Boot OS From USB Drive / Showing Black Screen With Blinking Cursor

Mar 8, 2011

I have a problem with booting from a USB flash drive. I have Acer TimelineX 3820TG. I have Windows 7 Home from Acer and I installed Mandriva OS from USB(from USB because this Acer doen't have a DVD drive). It was OK, but I want reinstall Windows 7 and so I did. Now I have Windows 7 Professional and it wrote over Mandriva's GRUB. It wasn't a big problem. For a while I was just using Windows 7 but now I am thinking that I need some OS with Linux and I am thinking about Ubuntu. But when I tried to boot from USB with Ubuntu I get a black screen with a blinking cursor after the BIOS POST.

I was trying many applications to create a bootable USB drive and many versions of Ubuntu (and other Linux distributions), but nothing worked. I tried to Google for answers but I found many problems where all booting goes to black screen but in my problem Windows 7 boots fine from disc but from USB doesn't work.

OpenSUSE Install :: Recover From 11.1 Boot To Black Screen?

Dec 12, 2009

I recently installed 11.1 via unetbootin from the network onto an old Sony VAIO laptop. After the installation completed, I suppose the OS started to boot, but I was presented with a black screen. I heard "chimes." The black screen does not provide any visible feedback from mouse or keyboard input. I hard rebooted and was presented with an interesting background graphic (grayish, I think) that faded to the same black screen.

OpenSUSE Install :: Black Screen With Regular Boot In 11.2?

Dec 26, 2009

A few days ago I updated my openSUSE installation on my Acer Aspire 5920G notebook from 11.1 to 11.2, but I haven't been able to get any kind of graphical shell loaded. Using the regular "desktop" option in GRUB results in a black screen. seems my PC is still responsive though as hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del like a mad man results in the PC getting rebooted after a while. I had the same "black screen" issue with the KDElive CD and the regular installation CD (Yeah, I should have known better than to do the upgrade...).

When opting for "Failsafe" in GRUB, I reach a command line. Before that it seems to try to load GNOME (you get to see the cursor) but fails at it a few times in a row. When I try to start GDM afterwards from the command line, it gets into a loop in which it tries to load, then crashes and then tries to load again, endlessly.I have installed the newest NVIDIA drivers "the hard way", and my card (NVIDIA 8600M GT) is on the list of supported devices on the NVIDIA website. SaX2 seems to work OK with it.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Re-boot/shutdown Black Screen?

Jan 6, 2010

I have been trying to fix this for some time, on and off, and have been unable to, I have also ben unable to find a solution in the forums.I have installed openSUSE11.2 GNOME on a laptop, the install went fine, and it runs great, except for two problems:When I start up the splash screen doesn't show (this isn't really important, and I am happy to watch as everything is loaded)When I shutdown/reboot the computer freezes and I have to use the power button to switch off. This doesn't happen every time I shutdown, but most of the time. The freeze happens at different points of shutdown, so I don't know where to find what is causing the problem. As I mentioned point 1 is not really important, although I would like to know why this is happening, but problem 2 is very important.

When i tried to go to openSUSE it seemed to work and a long list of text came up but after a few seconds it went to a blank screen. OpenSUSE Install :: Black Screen Hang At Boot - 11.3

Aug 2, 2010

I've down loaded the live CD for SUSE 11.3 and, using isohybrid and dd, I put the contents onto a USB stick and made it bootable. All good so far.

I then installed SUSE on one of the partitions on my hard disk (Windows is also on the disk). I set 4GB for SWAP, 16 GB for ROOT and the rest ~270 for /HOME.

I set the bootloader to be installed in the MBR.

The installation completed with no problems indicated.

I was asked to reboot and did so, removing the usb stick so that 11.3 would boot.
The reboot failed! I was presented with a black screen and nothing else happened.

I tried again, selecting openSUSE 11.3 from the boot menu. - Again a black screen shortly after pressing enter.

I can boot in Failsafe mode and then login with text prompt. I can't boot into runlevel 3 (same problem - black screen)

Does anyone know whether this is a problem with network configuration or graphics?

I have a notebook with ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5650 graphics card and
ATHEROS ar8132 ethernet controller.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 Along With Windows 7 But Get Black Screen After Boot Of LiveCD

Nov 17, 2010

I have windows 7 and I'd like to install opensuse 11.3. I have tried with liveCD, live usb, live dvd, but when I click installation, it shows "kernel loading", and when it finishes the loading, all I get is a black screen. Sometimes, when I try with the live CD method it reboots and the same happens again.

In my other computer with XP installed inside, it works immediately. I have tried to change video mode to text and vesa mode, also I have typed "acpi=off noapic edd=off" in the boot options line, but it didn't worked.

The black screen appears not only for the installation option, but also when I choose boot live CD, and check installation media. By the way, I have checked the downloaded iso with md5 checker, and it's the right file.

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgrade To 11.2 With Broken Zypper / Repository 'gwdg_suse11.1' Is Invalid?

When I attempt to refresh my zypper repositories, I get messages like:

Repository 'gwdg_suse11.1' is invalid.

I've asked for help (which has been freely given) on these forums before, but nothing has worked, and I've been stuck with this error for many months now. In effect, my system is effectively non-upgradable.

However, I would like to upgrade to 11.2. Is there an upgrade CD, or should I just download the 11.2 DVD (at nearly 5GB) and choose the "upgrade" option from it?

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgrade Via DVD/zypper Extremely Cumbersome, Unworkable And Thus Unacceptable?

Sep 5, 2011

Currently running openSUSE 11.2.

Obtained the 11.3 and 11.4 DVD(s) and tried to run an upgrade/update via the DVD(s). Both generate an enormous list with "conflicts". It starts with the first screen with 3 conflicts and after the choices have been made the next screen shows up with an effectively unmanageable list of conflicts.Worse, the DVD upgrade procedures touch and change files on the system in the /etc directory without consent!

Decided to try to upgrade to 11.4 via zypper as described here:
SDB:System upgrade - openSUSE

The description is good, however the description does not even mention the possibility of "conflicts" that have to be resolved. The word "conflict" does not even appear on the page. It appears to me that these "tested" upgrades have been tried on a pristine 11.2 and a pristine 11.3! If so, it would be good to mention this!

After effectively wasting hours trying to resolve conflicts, searching through forums and Internet to find a solution the general impression is that "upgrade" although supposedly supported url does not ***REALLY*** work as seamless as pretended. Several posts on the forum suggest a clean install as "upgrades are quirky".Needless to say... Clean installs (even when all data remains in place) are unacceptable!

I have run openSUSE now for a number of years for desktop solutions. Within a version 11.0, 11.1, 11.2 YaST and zypper seem to perform well upgrading those versions. However, upgrading versions alike 11.0->11.1 has caused serious headaches and/or required complete reinstalls.

When I compare this to FreeBSD The FreeBSD Project, where through a described upgrade process of cvsup->build->install I have upgraded systems alike 5.2->5.3->5.4->6.2->6.3->6.4->7.2->7.3 without a hitch the upgrade solutions for openSUSE just do not cut it.

OpenSUSE Install :: Evrgreen Zypper Up And Server Don't Boot Anymore?

Jun 3, 2011

I use evergreen for 11.1 on a hosted server. I just did a "zypper up" and I can't boot anymore!I still have access to the server through a recovery system a bit like the openSUSE rescue. But my main mail server in on this machine, so I don't have anymore access to the evergreen mailing list (of course I can subscribe from gmail of else, but i try first here).

I can reinstall from my hosting provider, but I just missed the point that this reinstall is not from 11.1 but to 11.4, and that mean I have to reconfigure most of my service, and this takes time.is there a way I can reinstall original 11.1 base? may I stop the evergreen repo, do zypper up and be undergraded?important notice: this server use a provider kernel and lilo, not the evergreen kernel. I now have a 2.6.38 kernel next time I will try simply issuing "lilo".

OpenSUSE Install :: Kernel Not Found On Dual Boot System After Zypper Dup

Mar 14, 2011

I have a dual boot laptop with OpenSUSE and Ubuntu. The boot loader used is Ubuntus Grub that came with the Ubuntu installation.

I have done a zypper dup and upgraded to OpenSUSE 11.4. When I reboot my system I can no longer boot into OpenSUSE, Grub says something about a missing kernel.

I think I understand whats wrong here; the OpenSUSE entry in Grubs table hasn't been updated with the changes brought in by the zypper dup (new kernel i guess).

I'm I correct to assume this? How do I fix the problem? Booting into Ubuntu I tried to find /boot/grub/menu.lst to examine it by I cannot find it. I know Ubuntu use a newer version of Grub, does it have a different file layout?

Ubuntu :: Cant Logout Without Black Screen Showing Up?

Sep 8, 2010

Every time me or another user uses the "log out" option were faced with a black screen that does not go away, unless the computer is restarted. i've left it for an hour thinking it might have just slowed down or something but that was a no go, and it happens each time you try to use it. the strange thing is if the black screen is up programs still run. i have a media server running most of the time and i have no problem accessing it while the black screen is showing.

Another problem im having is that sometimes when a user logs in they have no sound. the sound icon is showing that no sound is installed, but when another user logs in there is no problem and sound works fine.

Lastly i dont know if this is a feature or a problem. the first user to log in will always have control over the network connection. for example if my mother logs in first the icon to switch connections will show up on the top of her screen and she has full access to what connections she wants to use, also her account is just a basic user account. now when i log in i wont have the network icon on the top of my screen, and my account is the main admin account.

Fedora :: 14 Login Cursor On Black Screen Showing Now?

Jan 9, 2011

I installed some weeks ago Fedora 14 via burnt iso file downloaded from official Fedora site. It was working perfectly like a charm for me until yesterday when I tried to install zend server for PHP.During my first try of installation of zend server it corrupted out my apache server and I lost apache on http://localhost.I removed all "zend-server" like stuff from "Add Remove Software" screen.

Installed again apache 2 in the form of LAMP (Linux Apache Mysql Php)via terminal. Apache installed correctly and started workeing again ok on localhost.n again I tried to install zend server from install.sh file in downloaded zend server installation. It showed me after a while like "zend server installed successfully".I shut down my pc thinking everything is ok now.

Today when I started my system, it shows me boot screen of Fedora, I select fedora and then it shows me baloon filling up for around 5-7 secs. Then all of a sudden a black screen appears up with a cursor blinking at its top left and then nothing else happens further. I cannot find login screen to my desktop anymore.I remember one thing thating reinstallation of apache from terminal, I set following command like "chkconfig --level 235 httpd" (I guess that's what I have written as per some online tutorial for LAMP). Is that cause of mine problem ot its something else?

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen After Login But Cursor Still Showing

Apr 18, 2011

when I boot and login to a fresh install of Ubuntu, everything goes fine, the login screen appears, I login. Then the cursor appears on a black screen. This is normal. Then when the desktop should appear, on the very left edge of the screen, about 5 pixels in size, you can see the panel and the rest of the desktop. But I stress, You still see the cursor. In this small area, you can right click as you, even click on the menu and it will come down, you can see it. I can click on Ubuntu SC and the cursor will turn to a loading symbol. But then nothing again. I can press Ctrl + Alt + F2 and terminal will come on fine. So far, this has happened on a live CD of Maverick, A live USB of Maverick, A Natty Narwhal Fresh Install, A Maverick Fresh install, A Karmic Old Install and That same Karmic After going through a Distro upgrade via Ctrl + Alt + F2 to 11.04. I've gotten all the updates for all of them (A slow, bandwidth wasting process), and this doen't happen on other computers, even ones with lower graphics cards then mine. Additionally, on the same computer on a seperate partion, I can load my main Maverick just fine, Indicateing that it can't be a hardware problem. After searching across the internet, I'm at loss to an answer.

I even done a reinstall of OpenSuse and after one day I've got the same black screen.Someting wrong with grapfic card drivers? OpenSUSE Hardware :: Intel I7 HD Graphics Gives Black Screen Sometimes On Boot Kernel 2.6.37 Rc7

Dec 30, 2010

Just a little background I have a sony vaio VPCZ119X laptop and have been struggling to get all components working under linux especially the intel graphics. I saw that once I upgraded to the latest available kernel release which currently is 2.6.37 rc7. The intel graphics is working, but sometimes when I boot I get a blank/black screen but seems to be lit up. All other functions seem working so for example I am able to login etc just that I dont see anything on the screen.

I have tried the following so far to identify the issue or isolate it:

- Switching to the console screens has no effect, still the black / blank screen.

- Restarting the system does not always immediately get the screen working, sometimes it takes a couple of reboots before the screen is available

- I have a switchable graphics with nVidia I never get this problem when I use the nvidia driver

- I have tried closing the lid etc as suggested in the below post without any change in output, will try further as there are other options available as well The "Black Screen" on Boot I see one difference between both the Xorg log files but I am not able to reason out why this happens hence I will just supply the files here and try not to theorize.

Xorg.0.log - This was the log output when I got the X display working Xorg.o.log.old - This was the log output when the X display was black/blank Also to highlight that I am using the latest kernel release that is still being tested I guess so maybe it is also a bug in the kernel?
