View 9 Repliesi wish to copy one picture placed in home folder to usr/backgrounds/share to change my login screen.
View 9 RepliesToday I decided to customise my Ubuntu by installing my own picture over the default picture used in the log-in screen. I did a search and found it (in /usr/share/backgrounds). I looked into it a bit and found that the image was a .jpg with the name changed to a .png extension. I though I copied the title of it but must have hit the wrong button.
I put my picture in the folder. I then copied the name of the file, then deleted it. I went to paste the name over my new picture, and then found that I had hit the wrong button to copy it. When I delete things I usually hold shift to perma-delete it, so it isn't in the bin. Oh btw, I did this before in 10.04 and it worked in case anyone wants to do the same. It just needs to be a .jpg file, renamed to end with .png
I recently got this theme / login screen from here > [URL]
It is the 3rd one named "Login-Scan-fusion" I don't know how to set this up, how do I make it my login screen? I am using ubuntu 10.4LTS
Is there any way I can "change" the login screen logo to the one I have in the picture?
I thought if I placed it in usr/share/backgrounds it would change them both but to no avail.
I use linux mint 8, and I want to change the background for the login screen. For easier and smoother login. Ive googled for days, cand nothing works. I tried GDM2 and I press select new image, but it doesnt work. Do I need the image in a certain folder?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a dual-boot macbook with an OS X partition and an ubuntu partition. When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?
View 2 Replies View RelatedInstalled Ubuntu along with Debian on my Notebook and use Grub Manager to choose between them on startup. Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had Fedora 7 and Windows-XP dual operating system. Few weeks ago, there was GRUB error. Now I want to install Fedora 14, but before it I want to back up all data in one external hard drive. I used Fedora 13 live-CD I could access all the drive formatted as NTFS, but I couldn't access /home and the drive formatted (ext2) and owned by the user-name.
Please, inform if there is any idea to copy my files that remains in the home folder. (I can see them but copying is prevented)
I've been using Ubuntu for the past 4 years or so and would like to give Fedora a try. I have a question - should I decide to ditch Ubuntu for Fedora I will want to install but keep my Home folder.Normally whenever I've reinstalled Ubuntu I've installed over top of my existing installation. I have 3 partitions:
1 - Root
2 - Swap
3 - Home
When I reinstall I normally format root and swap but keep home and choose my usual user name. hen I boot up after install all my settings for all my apps are retained.
If I install Fedora this way (keeping Home while formatting Root and Swap) will I get the same results?
I am planning to install Debian amd64 and i386 in the same USB HDD to boot both types of PCs.
Unfortunately, there is not enough space for the home folder, so can I share the home folder with two systems. And how about swap area and /tmp folder?
F12 / Gnome 2.28.2 I'm just trying to share the /home/Public folder with my Mandriva laptop. The "manual" on Gnome's website doesn't give much info, other than clicking the option to share the folder and deciding whether to use a password or not. There has to be more to it, otherwise it'd work.
All I'm looking to do is copy files to and from the folder on the desktop machine from the laptop..
After removing GDM, XFCE4, and the crap-load of dependencies that came with it, something must have gone wrong. I can not place items nor delete items any more. How do I fix this problem of mine? I'm using KDE at the moment.
Code:
Could not make folder /home/theif519/.local/share/Trash
Deletion of files is necessary. I have installed libtrash hoping it'd work, but it didn't, I even did chmod 755 like it suggested I do. What do I do?
I got 9.10 on by laptop and xp on other computer. Installed samba server and xp recognized my laptop but not anything I share on ubuntu. am i missing something in samba config file? Im trying to share home directory on ubuntu and both systems have the same login id.

View 3 Replies View RelatedHaving been converted to using "Linux" about 8 months ago, and gaining confidence to try different distros, and figuring out how to 'keep' my Home folder, I've had great fun trying them out and learning as I go. The latest distro I'm trying is Kubuntu, which I really like and will keep for a while. However, when I was partitioning in the set-up, I omitted to create my home folder. Instead I now have is a partition the size of my "old" home folder, and to which I have to sign into to gain access. The files are all there so that is no problem.
1. What i would like to know is if this set-up is OK, or should I change it so that it is actually in the home folder (if so how?( a re-install?))
2. If I should decide to try out another distro in the future will this be safe to change to "home"?.
I have successfully changed the usernamebut now I want to change the name of Home toreflect the new username

This was a function of the installation. What I was wondering about was how secure this was and if I should maybe use something to do a better encryption or not.
