I'm running Ubuntu 11.4 on my laptop, and I can't connect to the internet with it (neither wired nor wireless). It used to be all fine under 10.10.
View 1 RepliesI installed ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop a few days ago and love the OS so far. However, initially i could only get internet connection though an ethernet cord. After much internet searching, i finally figured out how to get wireless internet. Unfortunately, in setting up wireless internet, I no longer have wired internet. The system doesn't seem to recognize my wired internet anymore. I'd like a scenario where i can connect to the internet both wired and wireless.

I came to use itr and discovered that the wifi icon had disappeared from the panel bar, and it won't connect to the wireless networkor via a wired connection.I have had a play around with this, tried ping -c5 google.comresult was:ping: unknown host google.comand ping -c5 4.2.2.1result: onnect:etwork is unreachable.I have other computers connecting to this network and know that it is working fine.

I would simply unplug the ethernet from the windows desktop plug it to my laptop and I was good 2 go.have recently moved and my roommate has a cable modem w/ wifi capabilities. When I plug in I am told that I am connected but......Nothing. dont know if the problem is due to the modem having wireless capabilities when my old one did not or the fact that my roommate has a win7 laptop that is connected via wifi etc. There have been a FEW times that I have walked out plugged in and everything has ran well. when I do plug in I look under connection information and I am told that I am connected at 100Mbps but whenever I try to visit a page I am out of luck. I define newbie (as far as Linux distros) and I have tried everything including going to work w/no sleep because I'm going through massive trial & errors

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am a Ubuntu novice who recently shifted completely to Ubuntu 10.04 from Windows 7 on my Dell Inspiron Mini.
1. I am able to connect to the internet ('Wired') at home but when i plug in the internet cable at work it is not connecting. It gives me the message 'Unplugged, you are now disconnected'.
2. I tried installing the Wicd network manager. Even though there are wireless networks in range it doesnt show me the wireless networks (like it used to show in wiindows).
I have read through a long list of commands in the forums of commands to be executed and executed them all but couldnt connect. Is there anything basic that I am overlooking?
I thought that wired network should work once I plug in a network cable irrespective of the place. How come I am unable to connect to the network at work? I used to have a windows 7 partition and the net connected plug and play when i was in the windows side. I dont want to install Windows just for the internet at work again.
I've been running ubuntu for about 6 months, so i'm still abit of a newbie at linux but heres what im having issues with:I'm having troubles connecting to the internet on ubuntu, i have no problems connecting on xubuntu on the same machine. I can connect to my network but i cant access the internet on firefox or snaptic or any of that, but the weird thing is i can successfully ping address' in the terminal. I can also connect to my router config page in firefox using 192.168.0.1.
My internet worked perfectly about a month ago on this ubuntu install, so i cant figure out what i did to make it stop working. I think it may have something to do with the/etc/resolv.conf file because it only exists as /etc/resolv.conf.tmp and when i run "sudo dhclient wlan0" (or eth0) it says:

currently running ubuntu 9.10, the internet connection im hooking up to is a router from a friends personal dish internet (were all deployed to Afghanistan). Here is all the static information that i need to input.now i have all this information input in windows 7 and it works fine since its all broken out exactly how it was given to me in the ipv4 settings page. wicd in ubuntu however wont use these settings.

I just installed ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix (karmic koala) on my eeepc so im pretty new to linux but getting the hang of it. i was running windows before and the wireless and wired connections were perfectly fine. when i installed ubuntu, i chose it as my main system and wiped windows. now i cannot connect to the internet through the ethernet cable or wirelessly. even though i put in the right ip adress etc it doesnt work. the wireless doesnt even pick anything up so i uninstalled network manager. i installed wicd network manager and that doesnt pick anything either. BTW using a Ralink RT2860 network card.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just did a fresh install of ubuntu studio 10.04 and I can not connect to either a wired or wireless network. The In Network Tools the IPv4 IP address is 127.0.0.1. It is plugged into a network giving out DHCP IP's. Both wired and wireless were working on ubuntu 9. I have tried to bring eth0 up in the terminal but it did not give an error or anything. It it running on a Dell Latitude D820 laptop.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have recently developed a problem with my computer connecting to the internet which has totally stumped me and is currently forcing my to use windows much to my frustration. I am using ubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. My wireless and wired network connections will not connect. They are all present in the menu and i can click on them but the connection tries to connect and then just times out and fails to connect. Everything still works fine in windows Vista. The more confusing thing is i tried some live disks to see if they would work but they all did exactly the same thing including a live disk of ubuntu 9.10 which used to work perfectly and live disks of openSUSE 11.4 and Mint 10. I struggling to tell if this could be a hardware problem or not. The fact that the live disks wouldn't work suggests a hardware problem but the fact that Vista still works totally throws that argument. I have looked all over these forums and elsewhere and have found some similar ish problems but non seem to have the severity of this one as all of those seem to be wireless only problems. The only thing that i was doing at the time this started was i had just set up a new secondary user account but i suspect that may be coincidental.

But after installing Ubuntu, I am unable to connect to the internet. The network-manager applet finally says that "You are disconnected". When I do the "ifconfig", I got no IP address.
So, I installed Ubuntu 9.04 in the same system. But the problem persists.
I gone through many posts in this forum but nothing was useful.

I tried to download the drivers for it and it failed everytime. I did an update thinking that the update might fix the wireless, but it didn't, it actually made my wired connection stop working. So now I have a newly installed OS on the laptop, and I can't do anything on it because there is no way to get any internet.

It can see wireless networks, and when I type in the password for my wireless network, it tries to connect, then asks for the password again. When I plug in the Ethernet cable, again it tries to connect, but after a few seconds gives up and tells me I am now offline.

Everything works fine under windows. I have tried to find relevant information in the forums, but nothing seems to work for me. I have tried disabling ipv6, setting a static ip, but no go. ifconfig shows no IP, dhclient results in no DHCP offers and pinging my router's IP results in Network is Unreachable.

I am currently using wireless; I connect to ISP with wireless but in order to access the internet I have connect to the wireless connection through my broadband connection(This is where I enter a user name and password.). I'm not sure why this is, I have always just plugged an Ethernet cable in and the computer just knew I guess.

For the last 3 or so hours I have been trying in vain to simply give my mobile phone wifi internet access from my netbook. I have tried to google and follow some howto's and guides, but they're either too old or don't explain it very well. I'm fairly new to use of Linux and of wireless networks, but can handle setting them up in Windows. So basically, having said that, I believe I mostly understand how this whole thing is supposed to work theoretically but I just feel as though I lack the experience to jump the wireless hurdle AND the Linux hurdle at the same time. I have provided some information below.
- Setup is based on Lucid netbook remix install with a Maverick kernel update due to lack of driver support for wireless NIC - I can confirm wireless does work properly for connection purposes
- I followed [URL] and kind of followed [URL however I couldn't even tell how to run Network Manager, even though Synaptic tells me it is installed
- When I ran into problems trying to install ipmasq I found [URL] and followed what the response told me to which allowed me to restart the dnsmasq and the dhcp3-server at least
- I have restarted the entire netbook several times throughout the process.
today i installed ubuntu 10.10 on my hp mini 210 netbook. previously i had ubuntu netbook remix running and had no problem accessing the internet both wired and wireless; however, since installing 10.10 i have been searching for a solution for the last six hours but have been unable to get either to work.
as far as hardware is concerned i have a broadband bcm4313 802.11 network controller and am running through a linksys router which i know to be working because i have 4 other computers connected to it all with internet access. i checked ifconfig and a lo conection was listed but no eth0. i also tried downloading a broadband tar.gz driver but dont have any packages to build it and cant get any since the computer has no internet. i assume wired is easiest to setup so lets start there even though i use wireless 90% of the time. im new to linux so please dont expect me to know any terminal commands.
I am unable to connect to any network, wired or wireless. Network-manager and wicd are both gone, as in no longer installed. Please don't tell me to apt-get anything. I have no network connection. I have tried downloading packages for nm onto a usb stick only to find myself in dependency hell which ended with the impassible error "Requires installation of untrusted packages".
