Ubuntu Networking :: Program \ Use To Monitor The Number Of Computers That Are Connected To Network And Block Them?

i have recently had a house mate move in and he is using my wireless network, even though i asked him not to give out the network key to his friends either he has or they have hacked my network and are using it when they come over, is there a program i can use to monitor the number of computers that are connected to my network and block them, or is there a way i can just wee what is going on. They seem to just connect and i don't want to have to change the password particularly because that involves changing it on multiple devices.

what I want to achieve is just to be able to say to who ever is killing our relatively fast connect that they aren't the only person using the network. Everyone just says "I hardly download anything." which is obviously untruthful as normally I can download at 1.5 MB/s but now loading even google.com takes way too long (same with pinging and all other sites). Once I do this, I can determine whether or not I need to call my ISP and do the long 'on hold' dance and "have you tried rebooting the router" BS.

My computer shares an internet connection using an ADSL router.There are other three machines.I have set up a Apache server for learning purpose and I want it to be inaccessible from anywhere else including the PCs in the network.When I enter my ip-address assigned in the network (192.168.1.1xx) from other computer,I get my ppages and I dont want that.
How can I block HTTP requests from other computers?

I now have 3 desktop computers hard wired into my wireless router and another desktop plus 2 laptops connecting wireless. All are running Ubuntu 10.4 or 10.10. I have not had the chance to get them all upgraded yet. What is the easiest way to get these computers connected so that they can share files? Do I have to set up a server or is there a simpler way? I just want to be able to copy a file from one computer to another.

i just installed open suse 11.3 after using linux mint 7(based on ubuntu 9.04).i am currently using two internet connections at home, the first is a vodafone mobile modem, which is workind excellent, and the other is a LAN network, that on windows uses a *.exe program to run. i managed to make all the IP, NETMASK, DNS settings and the internet connected, but without the .exe program it just disconnects after 10 minutes.this is the same thing that happens with the connections on windows if i start the computer and not run the "net.exe" program, but if that program is running the internet connections works just fine. i tried using wine to run net.exe, but it just gives an error message.

I need to use some PCs located on my university from home through the internet. I am using a program called Teamviewer [URL]... The problem is that this program transmits the whole graphical interface, which is slow, but I just need to use the command line with these computers. I am aware of ssh, but my university won't give me access to theses computers over the internet.

Can I use apcupsd to monitor my smart-ups 2200 without it being connected to a server? I have set the TCP info on the APC and can telnet into it, but I'm kinda confused by what I've been reading in the apcupsd documentation.
If someone can tell me about there experience doing this and best practice that would be awesome.

i done desktop config in ubuntu server 11.04 and connected via tightvnc,uvnc and in remote desktop viewer from another ubuntu machine also. I am not able to access(connect) the server in GUI mode(when monitor is removed) but i putty is working fine in cmd line.

I want to block yahoo, skype IM program with a schedule.Just unblock from 10AM - 2PM and 3PM - 5PM everyday.I tried block from router, but it's not block completely and haven't schedule function.I found that a firewall (Iptables and ISA) can do that. I installed the driver for my network card. iwconfig and ifconfig are all responsive to connecting to the network, I'm given an access point address. Then, I try to connect to a website and no dice. ping www.google.com yields no result. What gives?

When I try to use Nautilus to connect to another computer on my network, and I attempt to connect using the name of the Windows XP computer I am connecting to, I get the following error; Could not display "smb://computername/". Error: Failed to retrieve share list from server Please select another viewer and try again. However when I attempt to connect using the IP address on the network, it connects instantly. smb://192.168.1.101/ Why doesn't it connect using the computer's name? What am I doing wrong?

Just installed 10.04 LTS beta on 3 computers in home. At first, two of them showed up under the network window using places. The third never did and would not find the shared printer. After all rebooted, none show up. All three can access the internet and can display a valid internal network ip address using ifconfig.

For some reason, all the computers on my network can't reach each other via their host names. For example, the ping command doesn't recognize host names:

but to no avail.

I have a Windows 7 Desktop and an Ubuntu Laptop connected with a KVM switch. I use the setup for software development, so I am constantly switching between the two, so I need a way to quickly transfer files between the two. I'm not sure if this is possible, but if I could connect them in a way where the OS of each mounts the hard drive of the other. Is there a way I could do this?

I am interested and looking forward to get a smartphone or a personal data assistant with calendar/ email/ contacts just like the iphone does.My intention is to be able to sync my smartphone's data with my home server that actually carries my PIM applications. Basically, during the day when I am not home I will modify or add/remove data from the phone. When I arrive home I would like to be able to sync my changes to my server. My laptop will be reconfigured to retrieve and sync from that server.
Proudly running with Slackware on ALL my machines (gotta love Slack!), and Apple being **** by not supporting open source and linux environment, it seems that it will be difficult to have something working out of the box and will probably require jail-breaking the device, etc.. I don't want to rely on external services such as Google calendar except for the email from Gmail.

When I goto Places->Network sometimes I see the other Windows computers in our house, and sometimes I don't. How do I make this more consistent?
When I double click on the "Windows Network" icon right now, I get "Failed to retrieve share list from server". Sometimes this works and I get to see the shares on the Windows pcs.

I have recently set up a network of 21 computers running Edubuntu 10.10 I use iTalc to communicate with the pcs and also to shutdown all of them at once. The only problem I have, is it doesn't start up again with iTalc. So I switched to ClusterSSH. Only problem I have now is that everytime I run cssh, I need to manually add IP addresses of all the pc's, before I can start issuing commands. Is there a config file or something I can populate with all the IP addresses so that it starts up with all of them already added? And while we are at it, the command to start up a computer on the network?

I have installed Micro Core onto a usb of mine and am running it on my laptop. I have been able to successfully obtain a connection and valid ip with my router. As you can see below my wireless connection seems valid computer-end and on my router's page it comes under the list of attached devices.Although this is all fine and dandy, I'm am unable to ping my router or any other computer on my network, I am also unable to ping my laptop from other computers on the network. Also by the looks of it I have having no trouble transmitting, but I am not receiving any packets.

On the 25th of January, one of my computers randomly stopped being able to connect to the Internet. It was running a dual boot (Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS & Windows XP SP2), and is connected to the network via an ethernet cable (no wireless). According to the Network Manager, everything is working okay (there was no change from when I was able to access the Internet).
When I would use Firefox, I would get the message "Waiting for (page)...". However, this is not a Firefox only problem, as every program requiring Internet access (e.g. Evolution) is unable to connect to the Internet.
I compared the Internet settings to those of my father's Windows XP SP1 computer, which is able to connect to the Internet. There was no difference, except for the IP Address and Hardware Address. Because of this, I incorrectly deduced that either the actual Ethernet cable or the wall plug was faulty. I tried using a different cable and connecting to the Ethernet wall plug used by the aforementioned computer. Nothing changed. I was still unable to connect.
I didn't worry about it until Tuesday, when my other computer had exactly the same problem. It is running a triple boot between Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP SP2, and I am unable to obtain Internet access using any partition. As with the previous case, my computer showed no change in the Internet settings, and the computer also shows it as being connected to the network. It is also connected via an Ethernet cable.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000, and I installed Ubuntu before and it worked flawlessly until I decided that I had to go back to Win7 because of certain program compatibility issues.I'm back here trying to set it up and am having no issues except for with my wireless. I can see all of the SSID's, I am able to connect to my wireless, and it displays that I have been assigned an IP and all of the other settings given by DHCP.
I have been trying to fix this for hours, googled, searched these forums, and have spent time with some people on the Ubuntu IRC channel and we are unable to come up with a fix.

The strange thing is that although nothing will load when I try to visit facebook.com, google.com, or any other website... I opened the update manager and I noticed that it would download for 30ish seconds, stop and do nothing for 60ish seconds, resume for another 30, stop, resume, etc. until it finished. I am able to ping my router, and 8.8.8.8, but I am unable to ping [URL].

I have built a linux router with a pc having two network cards. I am running ubuntu 8.10.
I have enabled forwarding on the router. One network (192.168.1.0/24)is connected to eth0 and another (192.168.2.0/24) is connected to eth1.
The interfaces have addresses 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1.
On any side side of the network, I can ping both interfaces on the router.
However when I ping a machine on the other side of the network, I get 100% packet loss.
I have not touched iptables on the router or any machines.
What I am doing wrong?

I've been setting up a number of netbooks for friends in a group I belong to. I am installing Ubuntu 10.04 and/or Linux Mint 9 on all of the netbooks. The netbooks are all identical. Everything has seemed OK until yesterday. I tried to set the label on the new disk using: # e2label /dev/sda newlabel The error is Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda. Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.
But the filesystem seems fine. It is mounted. It booted up without errors. But all the e2* tools give the same error. So I checked another netbook with an identical fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit. It gives the same error although the system appears to work fine. Next I went and checked my own netbook. It is identical except I swapped out the HDD for an OCZ Vertex SSD. I aligned the partitions and prepared that drive carefully. It seems to work great. But when I ran e2label on it I got the same error message.
All the other installs are fresh, clean, standard installs where I let the installer use the whole disk and do the partitioning automatically. All are using ext4. I did a fresh install of Linux Mint 9 and it has the same error as Ubuntu 10.04. Kubuntu 10.04 on my desktop gives the same error too.

I'm using Wordpress on Apache localy to keep a diary (it's convenient because of the tags).
When I'm connected to any network (be it wired or wireless) my Apache (and Wordpress, of course) works just fine. But as soon as I go offline, I can't access the web server neither through browser nor by telneting to the 80th port. I'm having trouble pinging localhost, specifically, pinging localhost when I'm not connected to a network. When I try it keeps telling me the operation is not permitted:
