Ubuntu Networking :: Set Up Wireless Connection - Configure?
Jan 1, 2010
i just successfully downloaded and installed ubuntu koala (9.10 i think...) and its a great interface. i am just having extreme difficulty trying to set up the wireless connection. when i log back in osx, i am able to access the router and use the internet as i am doing now when i post in the forum. i am just trying to learn how to configure the wireless in ubuntu as well. have someone who has successful been able to connect wirelessly on an imac, or apple laptop in ubuntu.
I'm trying to configure my Linksys WRT54G2 wireless router for my DSL connection. I select PPPOE as the connection type and when I go to connect I get the message cannot get ip address from ppoe server.
I am deployed to Iraq and the Earthlink ISP here uses PPPoE to configure a connection to their wireless broadband. His english skills are pretty good and from what I gather, he's got a DSL connection that he's trying to connect me to. He showed me how he does it on a Windows machine but I can't figure it out on my ubuntu laptop. That windows machine didn't need any IP addresses or server names. It only used a username and password to connect. Of course a strong wireless signal detected was also pre-requisite.
I know my laptop works because I've had great success with it here lately, just not on the Earthlink service.I see their wireless is broadcast and I can connect to it. I just can't figure out how to post my credentials and authenticate.I don't see a way of entering my username and password because I don't know how to install (or configure) for PPPoE.I did use the pppoeconfig and got to the part where I add my username and password, but most of what's going on up to and after that, I do not have the knowledge base to use. So I figured that allowing the defaults and recommended settings would be acceptableYou'll have to forgive me if I've asked another dumb question here. I'm another one of those Linux enthusiasts who is learning and I'm just not willing to switch back to MS just to get internet while deployed.
The symptom is that NetworkManager repeatedly ask for password to connect to my AP.My AP is secured with WPA-PKI. The problem even happens with Fedora 11 live cd if I'm not quickly configure wireless connection using NetworkManager right after Fedora completes booting up. It means if I promptly configure wireless connection, i'm still able to access Internet. Same thing happens for the first boot of Fedora from hdd. For the second boot or when I dont quickly configure wireless connection when system finished booting up, NetworkManger repeatedly asks for password for AP.
I did try several approaches posted in this forum but problem still persisted. Some of approaches I tried are:
A friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.
Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:
1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.
2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).
3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.
I installed 10.3 (after buying it a couple of years ago and letting sit on the shelf) and can't get it to configure my ethernet connection or my wireless card. Yast doesn't include a list of available cards, and the error I get in installation-network setup is that the kernel isn't present. The machine I'm installing this on is a Lenovo, in which there isn't a discrete ethernet card (it's in the motherboard), but my wireless card (a Cisco LINKSYS 802.11G) is a discrete card. Because I'm divorcing Microsoft for a number of valid reasons, I don't have Windows available on that box.
Its a case of ".... wireless network connection active but still not internet connection .."I am using WEP - 128 key ... Works when I connect directly using ethernet cable ... but not wireless (pci and wireless router)
I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.
In WindowsXP I am able to assign multiple IP Addresses to a single LAN Card/NIC Port by clicking "Internet connections> Local Area Connection>Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)> Advanced> Add".
Is there a way to configure an Ubuntu 8.04 LAN connection to use more than one IP address?
My father recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my new AMD dualcore, but we have not been able to access the net.we tried resetting the modem/router. Windows XP had no problem getting us online - why is it such an issue with Ubuntu?
I tried to configure my vpn connection using pptp from the shell following following tutorial: [URL] now, if i use Code: pppd call novax to connect to my vpn i see following appearing in /var/log/messages:
Code: Feb 10 21:11:57 reg-laptop pppd[2655]: pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0 Feb 10 21:11:57 reg-laptop pppd[2655]: Using interface ppp0 Feb 10 21:11:57 reg-laptop pppd[2655]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/0 Feb 10 21:11:58 reg-laptop pppd[2655]: CHAP authentication succeeded Feb 10 21:11:59 reg-laptop pppd[2655]: MPPE 128-bit stateless compression enabled Feb 10 21:12:00 reg-laptop pppd[2655]: local IP address 10.243.249.22 Feb 10 21:12:00 reg-laptop pppd[2655]: remote IP address 10.243.249.20
verifying with ifconfig, my ppp0 ip is correctly set to 10.243.249.22 - i can also ping this ip but i tried to ping other ips in our network and i can't reach any of them - did i mess up the route maybe? Content of my /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/route-traffic:
I have attached the screenshot of the option which I select in Windows for making the same internet broadband connection. I am unable to find the same option in Ubuntu 10.04. Till now I was using the Pppoe Dialup. But now I am unable to configure this one.
I have installed OpenVPN for network-manager using "sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn". Now I have it in my network-manager, but I dont know how to configure a connection, I have a configuration script, when I import that script in network-manager it automatically creates a connection, but still problems exists ...

I am running FC13 on a Compaq Presario 2100 using a Broadcom BCM4306. I was able to get it running thanks to Fedora Unity Project. But It's a very unstable connection. I don't know what settings to adjust or enable or disable. It's not my router, this is the only wireless connection in the house that I have trouble with.
v10.4 {I have completely re-edited this thread because I have started over fresh. I am no longer using bind9, but now using the installation-defaults nameserver and dhcp and trying to get a handle on how things ought to be setup properly. My previous attempts was a disaster.}
Coming fresh out of a newly installed 10.4, I obviously was able to get network connectivity but then I ran into trouble the minute that I tried to change eth0/eth1 connections via network-manager's applet. What I found was, that when I attempted to define static connections, all bets were off. It seems that once one attempts to change eth0/eth1 which are wired devices, I was no longer able to recover my network connectivity!
I was however able to setup a wireless connection, so in this way I was able to get back network (and Internet) connectivity, and write this thread on this forum. I notice also, that there is no longer 'Networks' in the System->Administration menus! Geez, what the hell is going on? how to properly configure my static wired connection? Networks in 10.4 have really changed alot!
I until yesterday when trying to configure the wireless (broadcom) on my laptop could browse the internet and install packages normally. but now none of the connections are working
I've installed 10.10 server edition on a box I just want to use for file storage/backup, uPnP server, etc. The area I need to put the box doesn't have ethernet as an option so I'm trying to get this wireless NIC configured. It's a Buffalotech WLI2-PCI-G54S which runs the Broadcom 4306 chipset. I've managed to get the drivers for the card installed via the instructions here: [URL]
The drivers are working properly as I can run
Code: iwlist scan
and see all the wireless networks it detects. I found the info here: [URL] to complete the configuration, but I'm still unable to get it right. My wireless router is configured to use WPA2-PSK with AES. I could just try installing gnome and get the GUI network config, but would like to avoid that if possible.
