Ubuntu :: 10.4: Networking - Using Bind9 And Dhcp3 - Properly Configure Static Wired Connection?
Jun 15, 2010
v10.4 {I have completely re-edited this thread because I have started over fresh. I am no longer using bind9, but now using the installation-defaults nameserver and dhcp and trying to get a handle on how things ought to be setup properly. My previous attempts was a disaster.}
Coming fresh out of a newly installed 10.4, I obviously was able to get network connectivity but then I ran into trouble the minute that I tried to change eth0/eth1 connections via network-manager's applet. What I found was, that when I attempted to define static connections, all bets were off. It seems that once one attempts to change eth0/eth1 which are wired devices, I was no longer able to recover my network connectivity!
I was however able to setup a wireless connection, so in this way I was able to get back network (and Internet) connectivity, and write this thread on this forum. I notice also, that there is no longer 'Networks' in the System->Administration menus! Geez, what the hell is going on? how to properly configure my static wired connection? Networks in 10.4 have really changed alot!
I want my netbook to connect automatically to both the office wired/static network and to the usual wired/DHCP networks.
wicd is wicked but netsearching hasn't revealed how to configure it for both wired/static and wired/DHCP except by manually switching profiles.
wicd's profiles can use pre/post(dis)connect scripts but I don't know how to integrate them into wicd when they are upping/downing connections on cable (un)plugging.
If it is not practical to solve this within wicd, I'll explore standalone scripts to configure eth0 on cable (un)plugging, as detected by ifplugd.
currently running ubuntu 9.10, the internet connection im hooking up to is a router from a friends personal dish internet (were all deployed to Afghanistan). Here is all the static information that i need to input.now i have all this information input in windows 7 and it works fine since its all broken out exactly how it was given to me in the ipv4 settings page. wicd in ubuntu however wont use these settings.
I use Ubuntu 10.04. Last night, I installed the most recent updates for this istribution, and before I shut off my laptop, my internet was working smoothly. However, today my Internet connection is behaving very strange. When I try to connect to the internet, my browser times out or cannot establish a connection. I'm able to connect to low-input sites like Google search, but I cannot connect to sites like Facebook, Wikipedia, or even the Ubuntu forums (I'm currently using a friend's laptop to post this). Pidgin and Skype work without a problem, as well as Transmission. I primarily use Firefox, but I also tried Chrome, Opera, and Epiphany; none of them worked. Oddly enough, my update manager also cannot connect to the Internet to retrieve updates.
I have restarted my router, but it still works properly, as it is running fine on my friend's laptop. I have tried 'no proxy' in Firefox, but it did not help. I also disabled IPv6 in etc/sysctl.conf by adding the code:
I am using 2 VPS machines on VMware workstation. The older one is Debian 5.0 ( Lenny ) and I have successfully installed Static IP to networking and it works fineithout any problems.I just installed another Debian 5.0.6 ( Latest ) Lenny and installed another static IP. It's partially working and partially not. When I ping the server, the ping is successful but if I try to SSH, it says Connection refused and even if I tro use the net through the machine, it doesn't work and host name lookups fail. What could be the issue
I'm having mysterious wired network problem with my Karmic/9.10 machine. It hasn't been in network a while, but now I finally got the cabling done. I can't get the IP from dhcp server (TW-EA510), and static settings doesn't work either. Fresh cabling showed OK 1Gb connection on tester, and win7 laptop works fine. I even tried with long cable though the rooms, but it doesn't help, so it definately isn't the new cabling.

Motherboard is some old Lanparty with two ethernet ports, NVidia CK804 and Marvell 88E800 rev 13 Gigabit netwok adapters, neither of them works. At least another of them has been worked earlier when I last got it wired. It's been a while, so I'm not sure which one of them and with different router if that matters.
I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10, coming from 10.04 and the wired network connection sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. Right now I manually removed current network from System-->Preferences--> network connections, define a new one, and reboot. This usually fixes, although I've had to do this two times in the past.
Other general info Ubuntu 10.10 64bit, EVGA P55 motherboard, on board either net.
I am migrating my server from Kloxo (lxadmin) to Ubuntu (webmin/virtualmin), and I already had my Nameservers on my register (Godaddy) to go to [URL] and [URL] along with my IP. (I set the ttl to 60 cuz I thought that might be a problem) Now, I do a dig [URL], it gives me this output.
I'm setting up a home webserver with Ubuntu 10.10 and want to configure the interface to static. I'm using a router, which is setup and working correctly. I have been using linux workstation with dhcp for some time.
I've edited my interfaces file to reflect the parameters for setting static ip, with the exception of 'network'. No matter what I put into this setting, it causes me to loose connectivity to the outside world. I've tried to put my router IP, and my IP set by my provider. What should the 'network' value be?
At this time, my 'interfaces' files only includes the following and has connectivity out to the internet:
Code:
Do I need the 'network' settings as shown in every tutorial (but never explained)?
I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop on my desktop in dual boot with Windows 7.
Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.
The output of some terminal commands are below.

However a pint to that ip address (my router) is successful.

Hosts.allow and hosts.deny are both fine (not blank but no entries)
I don't know where to put this, or even what I'm looking for.
I've tried for 6 hours today to get my WPA2 wireless to work as a static IP on my laptop to no avail.
Basically I put things in correctly (at least according to that thread) but I get no interent. When I restart I get the correct IP address but no internet pages will load.
The network monitor I have on my panel shows that it is trying to send and receive information, but I can not get my pages to load.
I'm desperately in need of help, but I really don't know how to even ask for it correctly.
But to start here is my interfaces file (one config of about 15 I've tried).
I have two PCs one has Windows XP the other has Ubuntu 9.10 on it, the Windows PC has no problems getting on the Internet (I'm posting this with it) and getting an IP address from the wired router. The wired router I have is ONLY wired it does not have wireless at all, it is currently setup to hand out IP addresses between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254.
The Ubunutu 9.10 PC worked great last night surfed all over the place for hours, then finally shut it down last night when I went to bed, shut down appeared to be normal like it always does when it shuts down, then this morning when I booted it up it gave error: "WIRED NETWORK - disconnected you are now offline".
I am using ubuntu in my new office, and I can't get the network working. The "official" OS installed was a Windows, and it has a special "dial-up" app for the LAN connection (not wireless). My network admin is apparently not helpful, since he actually knows nothing about the internals for the "dial-up" app (he did not even ever heard of TTLS, PEAP, MD5, etc), and claimed that no OS except for Windows can work...
Well, I have tested various configurations with my Mac laptop, and apparently the LAN connection requires 802.1X authentication, and it's using a very weird combination "TTLS+PEAP+MD5" (if I check these options in Mac OS X, the connection works). However, in NetworkManager, I can't select both TTLS and PEAP, and moreover, TTLS does not work with MD5. So, is there anything I could try?
When I unplug the ethernet cable from this laptop and plug into my Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop I get a wired connection automatically but I have no internet connection in Mozilla
I've had a computer running Ubuntu connected to my TV for a few weeks now, but as of yesterday, I can't get it to keep a connection to the Internet. Everything works well for an hour or so after a reboot, but then no WAN connections work. When this happens, no sites load in Firefox or Chrome, I can't ping Google, I can't SSH to the box from work, and none of the pages I have running on apache load from remote computers. However, all local area connections seem to work fine. SSH from within my LAN takes much longer than usual, but it does still connect.
The situation is I have one machine just installed 10.04yesterday, and I plan to take it as FTP server sharing filesvia LAN and WAN as wellBut after setting up all network withNetwork-Manager found that my dsl connection willdisconnect while my wired connection was connected.
my network-manager setting process is: 1.wired tab: IPv4:192.168.1.x
I have a wired problem in Ubuntu 10.10, My Ubuntu can connect with Wireless network, however it cannot connect to Wired Connection. I installed dual System, one is Ubuntu 10.10, the other one is Win7. Under Win7, I can both connect to the Internet in Wired or Wireless mode.
The more wired phenomenon is: When I plug in the cable, I can see the icon connected in my network manager. But I cannot visit any URLs. By checking the "ifconfig -a", I can see the IP addr was assigned to my eth0.
connect to wired LAN in ubuntu 10.04? I think I have specified the IP address and everything correctly. But it says no connectivity. In windows it says connected but I am unable to open any webpage.
installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell 1564. My cabled netwo connection is not working.buntu has been dual booted with Windows 7. Internet connection on Windows is working. I have an ADSL modem connected to my laptop via the cable.I have given the details of commands asked to be execute(viewed various posts).
I recently did a whole system wipe and got rid of windows all together!! Unfortunately, that means I have to start over with the whole networking thing. I know I have a bcm4311, but I have no idea what I have for a wired adapter. I know that I could search through everything to find what I need, but there is so much info for all the different versions. I have ubuntu studio. Can someone tell me the commands to type into the terminal to find out what I have for the wired network card and recommend a place to get the proper "drivers" to get my computer working again?
Running a wired connection through a Linksys router that suddenly stopped working today.I thought this was a ipv6 issue sinced I enabled some of those settings to share a connection with my PS3.I have since disabled IPv6 in Firefox and through the grub. The RealTek adapter will not even show a connection through the network manager when connected. The onboard adapter will show a connection, give me a ip address and MAC but still will not load the internet. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both adapters through the network connections, as well as reinstalling Firefox to no avail.I've also tried using Open DNS servers.I cannot ping through the network tools either. Hard for me to paste a ifconfig since I'm on my laptop.I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (not dual booting).I did some updates this morning but it worked fine for a little while after that, until I tried to connect to my PS3.
i got wired connection using Ubuntu 10.10 and im new using ubuntu pls tell me where i must write the words not to write codes and i don't where i must do it.what is the best version of Ubuntu didn't had that problems?as i saw that Ubuntu 10.10 had same problem for all people.
i can't connect to the wired connection, but i can connect to the wireless... i'm using Ubuntus 10.04. when i run this codes into the terminal it shows:
A while ago i attempted to use ubuntu as my default operating system and it failed, i could not get the shares to work properly and i gave up. Yes i know, may be i should have kept going.
Any way, my problem is, Im attempting to use ubuntu 11.04 now, and this time i am realy keen on going through with this, however... for some reason when i connect my wired connection cable ubuntu keeps failing to connect. this is with the auto eth0.
Can any one help me with this problem? This is one of the major things that i will need to do if i want to switch over to ubuntu.
