Ubuntu Networking :: Assigned Computer A's Static Ip To Computer C Without Changing Dhcp Setting?

Aug 18, 2010

I set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.

Ubuntu Networking :: One Computer Sees Network, The Other Computer Doesnt?

Nov 11, 2010

My wifes networked computer connected to the network just fine when it was Win XP. Now that Ive converted it to 10.04 (completely) it can see the network, but it just wont connect to it. I had no problem converting my computer to Ubuntu and it sees the network and accesses it great. Files, folders and hard drives are all shared. So, one computer connects great, the other does not.**I dont know what to do at this point. Here is the layout:My Comp (10.04) ---------......Main Network Comp (XP)Wife Comp (10.04) -------/The main network computer is XP as it has software on it we need that does not work in Wine. The main computer will have to stay XP. I cannot get my wifes computer to connect to the main system, although mine connects just fine. I dont know what the problem is. Her computer sees the network, but when trying to connect, it times out and says unable to connect.

Ubuntu Networking :: Computer Finding The Name Of Another Computer Under DHCP?

Sep 10, 2010

I have two Linux computers and one small home router with DHCP functionality. I configured the router with the "dynamic DHCP" setting, ie, the static DHCP with MAC-Address was not used. Before that, I used the manual IP configuration, defining the two computers' names in the /etc/hosts file.

Example:

10.0.0.2 comp2
10.0.0.3 comp3

Now, with DHCP, the above example is no longer appropriate, because the DHCP server is supposed to tell the computer what IP number it will receive. However, I am missing something, because I haven't figured it out yet how to make one computer know the other computer's name. Is it that I haven't installed a name-finding package? Is there a simple way to accomplish this (one computer finding the other computers' names)?

Software :: Best Free Software To Securely Send Large File To Friend Over The Net

Mar 10, 2010

I am looking for good free software to send large files to a friend. I have tried Skype, but it was too slow, so I am looking for something that basically only uses the two PCs, some software, and no third party or server. We can figure out our IPs, if that would be a step to eliminating a 3rd party or service.

I have searched the internet for terms like P2P, private P2P, F2F, SFTP, etc., and I'm just more confused! What's free and rocks? It's not for music or multiple users, just for 2 users and big documents.

Software Requirements:

* Secure
* Free or open source
* Both Linux (for me) and Windows versions (for my friend)
* Good GUI, easy to use (no command line)

Networking :: Get Internet Access On Desktop Computer Through Networking?

Sep 10, 2010

I'm not really a newbee in Linux but I am a newbee in networking. I have both a Ubuntu laptop and a Gentoo desktop computer. I have just bought me the MBR1000 Cradlepoint router and it works great with my Verizon USB 760 modem plugged in it. I can now send and receive email on my Ubuntu laptop. I like it.My Gentoo desktop computer is just sitting there with no Internet access because my Verizon modem is no longer plugged into it but plugged into the router instead. Only my laptop now has Internet access. The laptop has an integrated wireless card built in the MB but my desktop has no such capability.

Is there a way (besides buying a wi-fi adapter) to get Internet access on my desktop computer through networking so that the router would give both computers Internet access at the same? My Gentoo desktop does have an ethernet adapter that perhaps I could useThe router has several LAN ports and one WAN port, both unused.

Software :: Access Computer A's Shares As Well As The Third Computer, The Aforementioned Computers Cannot Access Computer B

May 28, 2011

I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.

Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.

What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.

What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.

Ubuntu Networking :: Trying To Fix Up A Gateway Computer?

Jan 2, 2010

I have a gateway computer that I've been trying to fix up - whenever I try to install Windows XP/2000/Ubuntu, it finds a bunch of errors. I'd really like to get this computer working, it has a 300GB HD, TV inputs, USB ports out the wazoo, and all that other good stuff. Can someone help me with what to do or have a suggestion on what to replace?

I have formatted the hard drive (the Windows installation did it.) The windows installation is to the point where its copying the installation files to the disk, then it gives me an error that it can't find/can't copy the file. The Linux installation just gives me cryptic errors before it even does anything.

I just want to get it to a point where it's usable I really don't care what operating system.

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Ssh To Computer With Dhcp

Problem is, how can i ssh into a machine that has an ip given by dhcp? I could have the server send me it's internal and external ip, but that still does not open port 22 (or whatever i need) on the router so i can get to it from an outside line.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To A Computer Through SSH?

Feb 13, 2011

I have 2 computers in my house, on my network. I want to connect to one computer to the other using SSH. On one I installed "OpenSSH-server". "OpenSSH-client" was already installed. I go to the other computer to try to connect to the "server" computer and I enter in the terminal:

Code:
ssh username@192.168.0.33

It never connects. The text input "bar" keeps blinking, it never connects and I get the "Connection timed out" message.

how I can connect to the "server" computer? What am I doing wrong? And if I edit my "/etc/ssh/sshd_config" file to listen to port "12345" how do I get the other machine to connect to that port?

Ubuntu Networking :: Computer Cannot Connect To DNS

Jun 28, 2011

I am currently trying to upkeep and use my recently deceased fathers ubuntu machines, but as of 6 months ago I had never used Ubuntu or anything like it. I'm not trying to do all that much with it but a few days ago one of the machines lost its ability to connect to the internet, whereas every other machine in the house connects through the router just fine (wireless and ethernet.) I believe i've been able to diagnose part of the problem, the computer cannot connect to a DNS, but I have no idea as how to go about fixing it. My knowledge of Ubuntu is limited to just a few terminal commands. This computer is the one we use to network all of our printers and there are also some critical files on this machine that I need.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Ping Computer From Laptop

Feb 23, 2010

I have an old computer I have set Ubuntu up on to use it to learn about web services, networking and sys admin. As a first step I have installed the LAMP packages successfully. I want to reach my ubuntu computer from my laptop through my home wireless setup.

On the server I open a browser put this in the address bar and get to the "It works!" page so assume its correct.I go to my laptop, put the same number in the browser and am told that there's a problem loading that page.I figure ok, could be security or ports or something so i ping it to see if it work on that level and it doesn't.I go to my laptop, get the ip for it and then try to ping from ubuntu to my laptop - that doesn't work either.Pinging the router from both computers works fine though. What do I do now?
