Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Ping Computer From Laptop

I have an old computer I have set Ubuntu up on to use it to learn about web services, networking and sys admin.As a first step I have installed the LAMP packages successfully. I want to reach my ubuntu computer from my laptop through my home wireless setup.
On the server I open a browser put this in the address bar and get to the "It works!" page so assume its correct.I go to my laptop, put the same number in the browser and am told that there's a problem loading that page.I figure ok, could be security or ports or something so i ping it to see if it work on that level and it doesn't.I go to my laptop, get the ip for it and then try to ping from ubuntu to my laptop - that doesn't work either.Pinging the router from both computers works fine though.What do I do now?

My network is thus (verified with iwconfig and nm-tool):
Router1(dhcp) <---WDS---> Router2(forwards dhcp)
Router2 wireless has laptop1
Router2 wired has server1, server2
Laptop2 is a Dell Inspiron 1520 running Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop. It can always ping other networked devices. When it's wired, everything can ping it. When Laptop2 is wifi, only Router1 can ping it. Why?
Both routers are running DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/10/09) std. Laptop1 (running Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook) can ping everything but Laptop2, and everything can ping it, whether wired or wifi.

I am using an virtual machine. where I need to ping from one machine to another. earlier I was able to ping. But after going to google.com once, I cannot ping back to this machine.
But if I gave ping -I eth1 <IP> then I can ping.
I cannot install any package, so tell me solution which includes not installing any package.

I installed Fedora 12 on my laptop. I have a wireless connection to the internet that works fine, I attached an Ethernet cable from this laptop to a windows machine. There is a green light.
I can ping my localhost. I can ping the windows machine using it internal IP address via the router. However, the eth0 IP address does not work when I ping to it from the windows nachine. Also, I cannot ping to the windows machine using the IP address associated with the Ethernet connection.

I have a desktop computer (Ubuntu) connected to one of the LAN ports of the Cradlepoint MBR1000 router via an Ethernet cable. I also have a Verizon mobile broadband USB modem (USB760) plugged into the USB port of the Cradlepoint router.I also have a laptop (Ubuntu) with a wireless wi-fi adapter (802.11g). The laptop also has an Ethernet card but I'm not using it. The desktop computer does not have a wi-fi adapter, only the laptop does.
With the above setup, I have Internet access to both the desktop computer as well as the laptop computer, which I am well pleased with.Is there a way I can have file sharing between the desktop and the laptop, or at least ping between them, the way I have it set up? I can't use the ad-hoc method because for that to work each computer needs a wi-fi adapter. The router is using DHCP but can also be configured manually.

I have installed Micro Core onto a usb of mine and am running it on my laptop. I have been able to successfully obtain a connection and valid ip with my router. As you can see below my wireless connection seems valid computer-end and on my router's page it comes under the list of attached devices.Although this is all fine and dandy, I'm am unable to ping my router or any other computer on my network, I am also unable to ping my laptop from other computers on the network. Also by the looks of it I have having no trouble transmitting, but I am not receiving any packets.

I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to remote access my girlfriend's Ubuntu machine to fix a few things. The problem is that she lives in Japan and I live in RI, USA! Is it even possible to ssh or Remote Desktop her computer with such a high ping rate? (average ping time is 300ms) If so why can I not connect?

Installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Sony UX280p with Intel 4965 wireless. Ubuntu detects the card without issues (as far as I can tell). I can see all access points in my area and select my access point and pair with it. I get a DHCP address from the AP (if ifconfig is to be believed) and iwconfig shows the ESSID of my AP but I can't ping the AP or any other computer on the network, nor can I ping the sony from any other computer on my network. Last year I had installed 9.04 on this computer and wifi worked out of the box without any issues.

I have a machine running linux with 3 ethernet interfaces attached.
My Ifconfig:

eth0 is attached to a laptop, eth1 is attached to a PC. eth2 is attached to a DSL modem, and the server is successfully acting as my internet gateway. The trouble is, my PC cannot see my laptop and vice versa. E.G. cannot ping, host seems down.

I recently bought a HP laptop which is showing some issues. To make it precise:
1. I can connect to ethernet & wireless when i am at my university, which are quite good connections.
2. At my home, i share the internet with another guy. The connection is not very stable, in the sense that, sometimes the download speed is 1MiB/s, and sometime 250 KiB/s. I have a old laptop which can connect to it without any problem.
3. My new laptop can connect to it when the connection is better with download seed ~1MiB/s, but could not connect to it when the download speed goes down.
4. "could not connect" means even ping to router takes long time with 90% packet loss. But I can always get connection and ip address from dhcp although i can not ping thereafter. This is true for wired & wireless connection both. Is that a router issue? but then, why can i connect through the other laptop.

I am trying to transfer a lot of data from my laptop to my computer. Both are running Ubuntu 10.04 and both have Samba installed, and folders are setup for sharing. The laptop has a 56Mbps Wireless G built in module, and the computer has a Airlink AWLL6075 Wireless N USB Adapter 300Mbps. (I got the USB adapter working with the internet, since there was an issue with it just working out the box)
I have a wireless network, since wired is out of the question. The router is a Belkin Play N600 HD if that makes any difference. When i try to transfer the files across the speed of the transfer maxes out at about 785 Kbps (My Internet speed is 7Mbps=875 KB/s). It seems that the file is being sent to the router and then the internet and back to the router and then my computer.
I figure that bottleneck is my Laptop at 56Mbps, but that still gives a theoretical max of 7MB/s even at a low connection/link counting it at 24Mbps would still be 3MB/s. I even tried making a wireless Ad-Hoc network to transfer the files but when i went to Network it wouldn't show any shares.
I'm missing something to make it go faster and i really can't figure out what it is, maybe because I am too close to it.

I am using "ping" on 2 computers on the same wifi network.One of them shows a bigger delay than the other consistently.I am trying to find out what may be the problem.. Can someone suggesta way to investigate this issue or isolate the problem?Both of them sending "ping" at almost the same time.First laptop (much newer laptop model)

I have two network cards in my computer (Debian). One (eth0) is connected to the router which is connected to the internet, the other one (eth1) is connected to my laptop (Gentoo). Now I want to surf the web both on my computer and on my laptop. I obeyed some tutorials "Linux as router":

I have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.
When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.
If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.
I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.
I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.

I connected my HP Pavillion laptop to a 1360x768 Vizio TV. On the TV it displays my laptop but on my laptop it has a black screen. How do I fix it so I can see my laptop screen on my laptop and on my TV at the same time?
I used to be able to do this with this TV as well as my friend's Samsung. I'm using a VGA connector. What should I do to have my laptop screen on my laptop and on my TV at the same time?

I just installed my first EVER bind DNS server. I am running bind9 on Ubuntu 10.04. Everything seems to be working great except one thing: If I ping a host that I have set up in bind by its HOSTNAME the pings take 5-6 seconds to reply/print to the screen between each echo response. If I ping by the host's IP address, they echo back very quickly.
I have read that IPv6 can cause this, but I have disabled it in /etc/sysctl.conf and the problem still exists.
I know everyone says this can't be a DNS issue, but this never was an issue with dnsmasq (which i was using prior), and it doesn't make sense that the ping are ONLY slow when pinging by hostname and not IP.

So, I have an Virtual Machine running CentOS 5.4. It sits behind a hardware firewall which also does NAT'ing. I've set up plenty of these, so I know for sure the firewall and NAT rules are set up correctly. From the host, I can ping anything in my subnet and the gateway. But I can't ping anything else beyond the gateway. I can perform DNS queries and when I try to ping, it finds the appropriate IP address.But from the outside, I can ping the PUBLIC address (It's a 1 public to 1 private address NAT, not 1 public to multiple private). I've tried it with IPTABLES on and off, with no change.

I have Mandriva One 2009.0 (192.168.1.100) on one box and Mandriva Free 2010.0 (192.168.1.118) on the other. I can ping router (192.168.1.1) from both of these boxes but I can't ping one box to the other and the other way around. What's going on?.
Do I have to change some settings in router?. Or is it firewall issue on those two machines?. Both of these boxes are connected by cable. Symbol of the router: TL-WR340G.

I have a toshiba laptop with ubuntu 8.10 two partitions one with a crashed xp ubuntu and file storage. my net book is an acer eee with xp.
i have the two connected with a crossover Ethernet. I can ping the ubuntu with xp but ubuntu doesn't ping xp. i have the fire wall off. xp ip is /24 192.168.0.100 default 192.168.0.1 ubuntu is /24 192.168.0.3 defualt 192.168.0.1

I posted the same problem before but did not get answers, I guess due to the unattractive title. I have two Ubuntu machines, both desktop version with a server installed on top. They are both on the same network. It seems that when I restart the remote computer, I can ssh to it fine for a while but then I get the following:

I am using FC9 and internet is working fine on it.
Well, I ping to google, it is resolving but if I ping by hostname to other LAN computers. it gives error : unknown host.
But if i ping with IP address it is pinging.
NOTE :
1) My firewall is acting as a dns server and other windows systems are resolving it.
2) FC9 firewall is disabled.

I have two NIC Ethernet card (eth1 and eth2) on the same computer (linux) connected by a cross cable.
The two interfaces are on the same subnet :
eth1 : 192.168.200.1 255.255.255.0
eth2 : 192.168.200.2 255.255.255.0
Then i add a route for each interface :
route add -net 192.168.200.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth1

I have connected xp and fedora through crossover cable . xp has ip address 192.168.0.1/24 (manually assigned) fedora has 192.168.0.2/24 with default route equal to 192.168.0.1
I can ping fedora from xp computer but i can't able to ping xp from fedora computer.
I have manully edit the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file with correct subnet mask and ip address because when i tried to give ip address manully in network manager the subnetmask is replaced with gateway address don't know why.
Now i want to share internet through crossover cable . xp is connected to internet through wireless usb adapeter.
