General :: Moving Data From Computer To Windows Computer

Jun 28, 2011

I have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network. My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.

Ubuntu Networking :: Assigned Computer A's Static Ip To Computer C Without Changing Dhcp Setting?

Aug 18, 2010

I set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.

Ubuntu Networking :: One Computer Sees Network, The Other Computer Doesnt?

Nov 11, 2010

My wifes networked computer connected to the network just fine when it was Win XP. Now that Ive converted it to 10.04 (completely) it can see the network, but it just wont connect to it. I had no problem converting my computer to Ubuntu and it sees the network and accesses it great. Files, folders and hard drives are all shared. So, one computer connects great, the other does not.**I dont know what to do at this point. Here is the layout:My Comp (10.04) ---------......Main Network Comp (XP)Wife Comp (10.04) -------/The main network computer is XP as it has software on it we need that does not work in Wine. The main computer will have to stay XP. I cannot get my wifes computer to connect to the main system, although mine connects just fine. I dont know what the problem is. Her computer sees the network, but when trying to connect, it times out and says unable to connect.

Ubuntu Networking :: Computer Finding The Name Of Another Computer Under DHCP?

Sep 10, 2010

I have two Linux computers and one small home router with DHCP functionality. I configured the router with the "dynamic DHCP" setting, ie, the static DHCP with MAC-Address was not used. Before that, I used the manual IP configuration, defining the two computers' names in the /etc/hosts file.

Example:

10.0.0.2 comp2
10.0.0.3 comp3

Now, with DHCP, the above example is no longer appropriate, because the DHCP server is supposed to tell the computer what IP number it will receive. However, I am missing something, because I haven't figured it out yet how to make one computer know the other computer's name. Is it that I haven't installed a name-finding package? Is there a simple way to accomplish this (one computer finding the other computers' names)?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Gateway Through Windows Computer?

Apr 28, 2009

And I'm currently working on a new CentOS 5 install I've made on a computer I've got.. So I'm now trying to get that computer to reach my home network through one of my other computers, which have got XP installed. I've configured the XP computer to act as a gateway from one network card to another, and It works with another XP pc, but no luck with my CentOS 5. I used this link [URL] And I configured the correct network card.

So.. the IP of the XP machine is 192.168.1.70, which I have set as a static. So that the CentOS will find it. And I've connected the (fully working) network cable correctly.

What do I have to do?

I have configured the CentOS to recieve an IP dynamically. (dhcp).. Might that be the problem? (well.. one of the problems.. I've tried to set it to static.. ...?)

Is there more to it than this? I mean when I'm working on communication through an XP machine... ?

Tried various things to no avail. When setting up for shared folders I got a message that I needed to install shared services. I did this but I only have one share through option: Unix networks (NFS). The samba option, which I should be using is not available. I tried to allow "Share files over the network" but had to install some extra service. Software :: Access Computer A's Shares As Well As The Third Computer, The Aforementioned Computers Cannot Access Computer B

May 28, 2011

I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.

Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.

What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.

What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.

Fedora Networking :: Easily Share A Folder With A Windows Computer In 15?

When doing some Googling all I could find were forum posts on how to manually configure samba with smb.conf (a place I refuse to go, its 2011 people), and gnome-user-share which only shares ~/Public and doesn't show up on my Windows computer.

I do know that at least in Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome 2 all I had to do was right click on a folder at click Sharing. I'm looking for similar ease of use in Fedora.

Ubuntu Networking :: Info For Accessing Shares On A Windows 7 Computer?

Dec 29, 2010

I just got my Ubuntu 10.10 laptop to finally be able to access my Windows 7 Professional's shares, and I'd like to share how I got it working. Whenever I would go to Places > Network on Ubuntu, and then double click on my Windows computer (sometimes after finding it in Windows Network > {workgroup name}), it would immediately bring up a box saying "Password required for {computer name}". My Windows password wouldn't work here, but I didn't even want to be asked for a password. In Windows, under Network and Sharing Center > Choose homegroup and sharing options > Change advanced sharing settings..., Turn off password protected sharing was already selected.

So, I eventually found out that samba (the program Linux uses to talk with Microsoft's SMB network share protocol) has a bug of sorts. The format of the SMB packets coming from a clean Windows 7 is known by samba. However, if you install Windows Live Sign-In Assistant (which is provided through Microsoft Update) on Windows 7, the packets coming from Windows 7 are modified, and samba can not handle this. A patch has been written for samba, but Ubuntu's repositories (which has samba version 2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu8.1) does not yet have that patch.

Also, it seems Microsoft has stopped Windows Live Sign-In Assistant from appearing in Programs and Features. It doesn't appear even if you specifically download and install it separately. I did, however, notice that the installer calls itself Windows Live Essentials 2011. So I found that in Programs and Features, and uninstalled it. It asked which components I wanted to uninstall, and I selected all of them. Rebooted Windows, and now I can access the share no problem. I also grabbed the offending packet using Wireshark before and after that uninstall. The packet is indeed different. Specifically, without Windows Live Essentials 2011, there is no mechToken in the packet.

The current version of samba available is 3.5.6. I may try downloading and compiling that later, and see if it deals with the change that Windows Live Essentials 2011 makes OK. Also, it may be possible to get the share working without uninstalling every single Windows Live Essentials 2011 component. You may want to try that if you would like to keep a component.

Ubuntu Networking :: Windows Computer Just Stole Wifi Network?

May 12, 2011

A friend came by, and we tried to log her on to our wifi network when she was having trouble accessing it with her Windows (Dist #) machine.he wifi network itself was set up with macs, and had standard, open settings as far as I could tell - no password, NETGEAR title of the network. The Windows computer prompted us for a Security Pin, which we gave it from the router, and then all of the computers already on the network got dropped, while the Windows machine got set up onto the wifi, renamed the network with its own username, and automatically set up a password.I'm currently on the network using LAN, but can't figure out how to set up the network through Ubuntu back to the original settings for the rest of the people that need to access the network.Specs:I'm running Ubuntu 11.0,The Windows machine is unknown right now. I'll repost if that will help. The wifi router is a Netgear Wireless N 150 WSR 1000, with the serial, mac, and security pin numbers.

The command line options or any on-line documentation I was able to find, omits this entirely.
