Networking :: CentOS 5.4 Small Three Computer Networking?

Jan 19, 2010

What I want to do is have two different networks connected with my switch. I want one computer to be the server and run dhcp with the ip address 10.3.2.1 and I want the other client machine to be 10.1.X.X. I want the X.X to be assigned automatically from DHCP running on the server. The subnet mask I believe should 255.255.255.0 for both networks. How can I get these two different networks to talk to each other when they are on completely different networks??

Networking :: CentOS/RHEL Small Network Configuration?

Jan 14, 2010

I want to create a small network of 3-5 computers. I want to have one computer as my server and have services like NFS, DHCP, NTP, etc. I want to connect it to 2-4 other clients that have the bare minimal installation of linux on them. I would like 1 client computer to have a static ip address and I would like another to receive a dynamic ip address from the server. How would I go about doing all of this without the assistance of GUI's? I want to be able to do all this with the ks.cfg and network config files.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Connect To A Small Number Of Random Websites: Otherwise Networking Is Fine

Dec 29, 2010

I was having no problems (that I knew of) browsing the web since installing Ubuntu 10.10 a week or so ago. I was previously trialling Win7 as my customers will likely be using that in the future. Then I wanted to go to internode.on.net. Got the following: Quote: Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at internode.on.net. or Quote: Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to internode.on.net

As it was just after Christmas I thought it must be down, for upgrades or maintenance etc. I later tried to go to Freebsd.org; same error. I've been having a small number of other websites give the same error. I thought nothing of this until I tried it on my wife's macpro. I could log onto all the websites I wanted to and none gave any indication of having been down. Both boxes are on the same adsl connection. I still can't access internode or freebsd on 10.10 yet have been able to access every website on OSX. Now, I was only looking at them for info but am worried I won't be able to access something important. (so far everything I 'need' is working)

ping just drops out. edit: weirdest thing! I just retried and now can not emulate the problem for internode. freebsd still won't show. that is less than five minutes between problems and resolution! I hadn't even posted! But I still would like to have an idea of what is going on. Here is the ping error for freebsd: Quote:

CentOS 5 Networking :: Authenticating Against Another Computer?

Jun 5, 2009

I was wondering if there is a way of doing this without some of the usual methods (Kerberos, XDCMP forwarding etc).

The problem is

- Computer 1 is busy

- user 1 only has a login for computer 1

- Computer 2 is free

- user 2 cant use it as they don't have login credentials for the computer as it is all done locally

I was wondering if there would be a way to forward a login request from Computer 2 to Computer 1 without the use of any proper authentication methods

CentOS 5 Networking :: Gateway Through Windows Computer?

Apr 28, 2009

And I'm currently working on a new CentOS 5 install I've made on a computer I've got.. So I'm now trying to get that computer to reach my home network through one of my other computers, which have got XP installed. I've configured the XP computer to act as a gateway from one network card to another, and It works with another XP pc, but no luck with my CentOS 5. I used this link [URL] And I configured the correct network card.

So.. the IP of the XP machine is 192.168.1.70, which I have set as a static. So that the CentOS will find it. And I've connected the (fully working) network cable correctly.

What do I have to do?

I have configured the CentOS to recieve an IP dynamically. (dhcp).. Might that be the problem? (well.. one of the problems.. I've tried to set it to static.. ...?)

Is there more to it than this? I mean when I'm working on communication through an XP machine... ?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Unable To Connect To Home Computer?

Sep 3, 2009

I just moved into a new apartment and now connect via DHCP. Everything seems fine network-wise, except that when I'm at work I can't connect to the home box. (CentOS 5.3 x86_64) One thing I noticed is that I can't really determine my "true" IP address. What I mean is that it looks like my IP is 192.168.0.190, but when I use linuxdcpp, and enter a hub, I'm told my IP addr is actually something like 71.192.163.206. Here's some info:

[root@localhost cwatson]$ cat /var/lib/dhclient/dhclient-eth0.leases
option dhcp-server-identifier 192.168.0.1;
option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.1;
option broadcast-address 192.168.0.255;

Ubuntu Networking :: Ftp Verus Samba / Small Mediaserver

-On a little NAS i've got my video-files.

-Using wifi i can go to the smb-share on the NAS to open a video-file on my laptop. (kinda slow/laggy)

-I can also use the ftp-server build into the NAS and mount that on /media/ftp (using curlftpFS on the laptop)

According to what i have read about ftp/smb, FTP is faster! (haven't tested yet)The NAS has got a mt-daapd and twonky but i don't think i can find those in VLC or TOTEM... (? wonder if that would make things faster)

Networking :: No Ping Broadcast Response Over Small Switch

Mar 24, 2010

So I just changed my network card settings recently, and I'm now getting no response when I ping the broadcast address for them... the cards are all connected through a switch with IP addresses 192.168.0.x, broadcast 192.168.0.255... ifconfig on all of them shows UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST, but nobody responds to a broadcast packet. Any thoughts?

EDIT: Pinging each machine individually works fine.

Ubuntu Networking :: Assigned Computer A's Static Ip To Computer C Without Changing Dhcp Setting?

Aug 18, 2010

I set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.

Networking :: Get Internet Access On Desktop Computer Through Networking?

Sep 10, 2010

I'm not really a newbee in Linux but I am a newbee in networking. I have both a Ubuntu laptop and a Gentoo desktop computer. I have just bought me the MBR1000 Cradlepoint router and it works great with my Verizon USB 760 modem plugged in it. I can now send and receive email on my Ubuntu laptop. I like it.My Gentoo desktop computer is just sitting there with no Internet access because my Verizon modem is no longer plugged into it but plugged into the router instead. Only my laptop now has Internet access. The laptop has an integrated wireless card built in the MB but my desktop has no such capability.

Is there a way (besides buying a wi-fi adapter) to get Internet access on my desktop computer through networking so that the router would give both computers Internet access at the same? My Gentoo desktop does have an ethernet adapter that perhaps I could useThe router has several LAN ports and one WAN port, both unused.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Crashing When Reading / Writing Many Small Files?

Mar 18, 2010

Samba seems to crash and come back after some seconds if I copy a lot of small files in a short period of time over the network. How do I fix it?

I have Ubuntu 9.10 Server 64bit running on a D945GCLF2 board sharing two 1TB ext4 formatted HDDs to my Windows PCs using samba. I've been having an issue with reading or writing files through samba. It happens during copying operations or checksumming, anything that reads or writes MANY small files in a small amount of time. I am pretty sure the problem has to do with my server because the server has run on two different LANs in different homes and will crash from activity with any of several other PCs. There is no crashing if I access the files through SSH, although when I do that the max transfer speed is less than 1MB/s.

When I induce the crashing, there is absolutely no output to the server terminal.

As an easy access example of something that will crash samba, extracting Cinebench R11.5 to the server will do the job. It always fails.

Ubuntu Networking :: Make A Wirelss Hot Spot At Our Small Hotel In Italy?

Nov 23, 2010

I need to make a wirelss Hot Spot at our small hotel in Italy. I am already doing it, however I have no way of logging my customers. As per the new laws here in Italy, I must secure my wi-fi and keep a log/database of all that enter. I have found some units that will cost me about a 1000euro to purchase, but I am providing this to my customers for free, so if I can do this by using one of my extra/old computers running linux, that would be ideal.

I did a general search for these terms: "wireless access point hot spot firewall" but there were zero results, which I thought was strange.

Ubuntu Networking :: Computer Finding The Name Of Another Computer Under DHCP?

Sep 10, 2010

I have two Linux computers and one small home router with DHCP functionality. I configured the router with the "dynamic DHCP" setting, ie, the static DHCP with MAC-Address was not used. Before that, I used the manual IP configuration, defining the two computers' names in the /etc/hosts file.

Example:

10.0.0.2 comp2
10.0.0.3 comp3

Now, with DHCP, the above example is no longer appropriate, because the DHCP server is supposed to tell the computer what IP number it will receive. However, I am missing something, because I haven't figured it out yet how to make one computer know the other computer's name. Is it that I haven't installed a name-finding package? Is there a simple way to accomplish this (one computer finding the other computers' names)?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Install The Latest Kmod-r8168 Rpm - It Failed To Enable The Networking Support

Dec 30, 2010

I had the elrepo kmod-r8168 driver running smooth for a while on my development box.
Yesterday, I did a clean install on it and when I tried to install the latest kmod-r8168 rpm, it failed to enable the networking support:

# yum --enablerepo=elrepo install kmod-r8168

The install performed all proper steps to disable the 8169 driver, I double checked to be sure. This is not a connectivity issue. If I remove the kmod-r8168 rpm, reboot the server and run the ifconfig eth0 up to activate the interface, everything works as expected. I use the latest kernel (2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 x86_64).

First, I performed a clean install, activated the eth0 and did a yum update, then installed the kmod-r8168 with yum. Then, I reinstalled the OS again, activated the eth0 and installed the kmod-r8168 on a 5.5 CD based kernel, same fail results. The only hiccup is: every time I start the box, I have to activate the eth0 interface (with default CentOS 8169 driver):

# ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.3
# ping -c 3 192.168.1.1 (no packets lost)
# ifconfig eth0 up

Once I do this, I have network connectivity.
