Ubuntu Networking :: Message Passing Over The Network?
Jun 25, 2010
We have a ubuntu machine on the network with number of users in it. Basically, when other users connect via telnet i want then to get particular messages depending on the user. The message will be set by the administrator or a particular user with privs. Similarly we also need a to-do app via which users can update their work and see each others progress . Its all in a local network. Do tell what would be the best way to do it!
I was looking to install the message passing library MPICH2. In yast with my repos, only mpich 1 comes up. I tried looking for unofficla repos that had it,a nd in fact google threw up a user called Rotkraut's repor directory, but thought he google search engine could see it, I couldn't. So I went over to the mpich website and saw that several rpms were available for different version of fedora. Is it useful to try those? And if so, which version? Fedora 10? Fedora 11? Fedora 12?
language-pack-en, language-pack-en-base, language-pack-kde-en, language-pack-kde-en-base, libsoup2.4-1, libsoup-gnome2.4-1, pm-utils today on my laptop. Some hours later, I had to force the computer to shut down by pressing the power button, since it got totally lagged when I started it after an automatic sleep due to no power left. I started it, logged in and saw that the network manager was unmanaged. I got that message when I clicked the icon at the right-bottom bar.
So, I tried with "ifconfig" in a Terminal, as root.Therefor, I did "sudo ifconfig eth1 up", and the same with eth0. The network manager did not work anyways. I killed it using "sudo killall -9 knetworkmanager" and started it with "knetworkmanager" from the Terminal. The icon got removed and it appeared again, but nothing changed - it said "network manager disables", as before.I logged off and select "Restart X server" from the login screen. I logged in again and tried. Didn't work. When I restarted my computer I saw that eth0 and eth1 was down again. I took them up and then I checked the hardware settings. I saw that I could use either KNetworkManager, Fake Net or Wicd. I tried to locate if I had Wicd or Fake Net installed, but I hadn't.
Neither the wireless or the wired connection works now. I'd like to know how to fix the Network Manager, or whatever is wrong. Also, I'd like to know if I can install Wicd using a CD or something. Maybe Wicd works better, I have no idea. I'm using Kubuntu 10.04, the final release.
I want to implement a cross layer approach. I want to pass the network information such as delay from the MAC layer to Network layer. Can you tell me the way I am new to this. I am using linux (fedora). I think some system call will do the trick. Correct me if I am wrong. (I want to implement QoS matrices)
I have recently installed 10.04 on an old box I have sitting around and wanted to include it in my home network. After struggling with Network Manager I went in and set up the files manually.
/etc/hosts reads:
127.0.0.1 localhost 10.0.0.01 one.network one 10.0.0.02 two.network two
[code]....
then the IPv6 stuff
/etc/network/interfaces reads:
auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0
[code]...
Now I can access the internet from this machine, but when I attempt to ssh to another machine in the network I get the message "Port 22 network is unreachable" Checking with google I found that there should be some ssh config files. I have one ssh_config but no sshd_config. I don't know if this is relevant. Also "network" is not the name of my network. Changed for anonymity.
I'm using an ubuntu machine to route internet to my main PC. I think I finally got it working with DHCP and all, but there's still a slight problem. DNS does not work! My /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf file contains the following lines:
I am currently only able to post on this forum because I copied /etc/resolv.conf from my server to my main machine. Now DNS is working. But it should update automatically, right? Currently, this isn't working.
If possible, I'd like it most if I wouldn't have to hardcode the DNS servers in /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf either, but that the server would just relay the DNS adress it has gotten itself!
Installed 10.04 yesterday, cannot get wireless to complete connection:wifi hosts are recognized and listed, two green dots are lit on systempanel, but blue arrow only ceses circling with the message "wirelessnetwork disconnected"
ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:a0:d1:27:43:d5 UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
Using 10.04 and x11vnc I'm finding that upper case characters are being sent as lower case. I've tried multiple keyboard configurations with no success
I did some playing around changing up the configuration of my server and now cannot pass traffic through to port 22. I have since restored everything back to the way it was but am still not able to ssh into the server.
nmap only shows port 80 and 5222 open. Both ports that I want open. However I am unable to get 22 to pass.
I have a working wireless connection on OpenSuSE11.2 but after installing the KDE network manager, clicking on its icon only gives this message: "Network Management Disabled"
My issue is with my Fedora 9 virtual machine that is running a Scalix mail server (host is F12).
The F9 VM was running fine until this morning when for no reason it crashed as I attempted to initiate a realVNC connection with it.
After a reboot users were unable to send mail to external addresses. When I try to check the network settings by selecting "System" -> "Administration" -> "Network", I receive the following error message:
I am running a opensuse 11.4 with mailx 12.2. I am trying to sent emails via command line using mailx. I have not configured any mail server in yast. My .mailrc in my homefolder looks like this:
set smtp-use-starttls account gmx { set smtp=mail.gmx.net:465 set smtp-auth=login set smtp-auth-user=my.name@gmx.de set smtp-auth-password=mypassword set from="My name <my.name@gmx.de>" }
Unfortunately when I use the command mailx -s"Test" -A gmx my.name@gmx.de [Return] Hallo [ctrl+d] I am getting only the message Unexpected EOF on SMTP connection "/home/myname/dead.letter" 11/338 . . . message not sent.
(I'm probably going to have my forum account revoked due to excessive usage ) I'm setting a VPN connection on openSUSE 11.2. Using the networking icon on the tray I add a PPTP connection, set it up but I receive a message 'VPN connection failed'. Googling it up I tried changing a setting called 'refuse-eap' to 'yes' but it doesn't seem to work. Here's the result from the log file:
Anyone know what this signifies in the Apache logs files:
Code: [Tue May 04 20:56:06 2010] [error] [client *******] client sent HTTP/1.1 request without hostname (see RFC2616 section 14.23): /w00tw00t.at.ISC.SANS.DFind:) [Tue May 04 20:56:06 2010] [error] [client *********] client sent HTTP/1.1 request without hostname (see RFC2616 section 14.23): /w00tw00t.at.ISC.SANS.DFind:) [Tue May 04 21:05:18 2010] [error] [client ********] client sent HTTP/1.1 request without hostname (see RFC2616 section 14.23): /w00tw00t.at.ISC.SANS.DFind:) [Tue May 04 21:05:18 2010] [error] [client ********] client sent HTTP/1.1 request without hostname (see RFC2616 section 14.23): /w00tw00t.at.ISC.SANS.DFind:)
I am using 11.3 on one machine and 11.2 on the other (a netbook). 11.4 won't install on either and 11.3 on the netbook fails to install as well.
I am using the same setup as I have always used when both systems ran 11.2 (details below) but now I can only mount a drive in one direction. In the other direction the mount command gets stuck with no error message until it eventually times out. I can ping and ssh the machines from each other without difficulty.
Even in the direction in which the mount apparently works (11.2 mounting a drive on the 11.3 machine) when I try to copy files across nothing actually happens.
exportfs -a was run successfully on the exporting machine, and nfsserver is running on both machines as does nfs client.
The exporting machine is 192.168.1.102 (eeelinux) and the other machine is 192.168.1.101 (nina).
Details: The /etc/exports file on the exporting machine (192.168.1.102) looks like this: eeelinux:/home/naima # more /etc/exports # See the exports(5) manpage for a description of the syntax of this file. # This file contains a list of all directories that are to be exported to # other computers via NFS (Network File System).
I have local and remote networks that have various printers. I can add any printer (local or remote) to any PC, except for one PC that's refusing to allow remote connection (it used to, but doesn't now!). The problem PC has two printers connected and work OK as a local printer, but both display same problem when attempting to connect from any remote PC via YaST. Using 'Connection Wizard> CUPS Server' connection method requires IP address of remote PC and printer name. But if I correctly select either of the two printers I get an error message:
"PING 192.168.1.149 (192.168.1.149) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 192.168.1.149: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=1.12 ms
Both printers are set to 'Accept Print Jobs' and 'Share Printers> Allow remote access' permits all networks to connect. why this PC is requiring the root password?
I updated my NetworkManager from version 0.9svn1128615-2.2 /opensuse/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.2/i586/) to the newest version 0.9svn1128615-138.2.The result was, the after reboot an error message occured, saying that the KNetworkmanager is not working and it would be not able to start the program !Did anybody else have the problem with this newest version?
I can see my Suse 11 severs, ftp to it and sit up share folder but can't login as user from workstation as users. It IBM eServer 235 2X3.8Ghz Xeon, 6GB of memory with 6X73.6 Hard Drive got this message error; The following security events occurred since Thu Jan 20 19:29:40 2011:

I am in the process of settign up a home server under FC14. The installation recognized both NICs, one as Intel Gigabit and the other as a Realtek Semiconductor as it should be. But when trying to start eth0 (Realtek) I get the following error message:
[root@theraugafamily network-scripts]# ifup eth0 Active connection state: activating Active connection path: /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/1 ** (process:2296): WARNING **: _nm_object_get_property: Error getting 'State' for /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/1: (19) Method "Get" with signature "ss" on interface "org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties" doesn't exist
state: unknown Error: Connection activation failed. Some more ifo the this NIC as it is of special type.It is a Viking PCI ADSL2+ Modem Card. I am quoting form the description "Being a gully integrated card, no external plug packs are required and cabling is simplified to just an ADSL line connection. The need to purchase an extra ethernet card is also eliminated, as yjis features is build into the card. The onboard Ethernet controller (RTL8139) makes the modem appear to the OS as a standard network card. Thus the Viking can be used with almost any modern O/S without the need for special drivers. This includes Windows, Linux, Solaris, xBSD, etc.." setting ACPI=off in GRUB.conf does not fix the issue
I have installed qemu/kvm and created a Bridged network connection which works just fine(Windows 7 VM won't work in NAT mode.)
But when I try to use NetworkManager it says that I have no network connection because the network isn't managed, (I set the settings in ifcfg-br0 and ifcfg-eth0 to be managed)
The real problem is that now I can't use my VPN connections (I have many) in NetworkManager.
Is there a way to have both of these pieces of functionality?
Using IMAP to retrieve emails in Evolution is not working correctly. Some messages are recieved, others are not. Those messages that cannot be recieved, reports the following error message: Unable to retrieve message

Im trying to instal Sun Virtualbox but when download completes and I click on install I get the following error>>Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus) I wont even bother with this software if there are others out there that are as easy to use. I used it on Windows and thought it was great ! (thats how I eventually switched to Linux, by using it virtually at first)
if there is a way to send a message to computers connected to the LAN? I tried to install linpopup but I only got the message E: Unable to locate package linpopup.
