OpenSUSE :: Install The Message Passing Library MPICH2?

Jun 2, 2010

I was looking to install the message passing library MPICH2. In yast with my repos, only mpich 1 comes up. I tried looking for unofficla repos that had it,a nd in fact google threw up a user called Rotkraut's repor directory, but thought he google search engine could see it, I couldn't. So I went over to the mpich website and saw that several rpms were available for different version of fedora. Is it useful to try those? And if so, which version? Fedora 10? Fedora 11? Fedora 12?

We have a ubuntu machine on the network with number of users in it. Basically, when other users connect via telnet i want then to get particular messages depending on the user. The message will be set by the administrator or a particular user with privs. Similarly we also need a to-do app via which users can update their work and see each others progress . Its all in a local network. Do tell what would be the best way to do it!

When I run my prog and try to access the lib I get this error: Wrong JPEG library version: library is 80, caller expects 62 This seems a common problem elsewhere. Anyone know how to fix it in 11.3 ?

OpenSUSE Install :: System Log Message Every Second

Apr 11, 2010

Whenever our computer goes into sleep mode/screensaver under my wife's login, it stalls and will not wake up. Doesn't happen under any other user logins (go figure ). While trying to troubleshoot that issue, I reviewed the system log via YaST. I got a LOT of Apr 11 15:25:52 linux-d8dy kernel: sr0: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive.

And by a lot, I mean it is every second. I don't have anything looking for a CDROM file that I know of. Can someone tell me what is causing this? Is there a way to make it stop?

Programming :: New MPICH2 Installation - Interfering - With -make - Cant Compile Fortran Programs

Jul 28, 2011

Actually I had a folder called Lib, in which I had a few libraries installed and configured.(MPI, PETSc, SLEPc) I accidently deleted (by rm) the contents of that folder.

Then I reinstalled MPI,PETSC,SLEPC using the same tarballs as earlier(thus, the version etc. is the same).

I already had a fortran program with many modules and subroutine files, and the corresponding makefile which used to compile and run fine. But now when I type "make" in the same directory as before, I get this: (shortened, many similar errors)

Code:

Firstly, why is mpif90 compiling my program when I didnt tell it to? In my makefile, I have specified gfortran as my compiler....nowhere have I even mentioned mpif90. Such a thing never used to occur before.

Also, if I rename file_variable.f to file_variable.f90, these errors dissappear (I understand why, but that is not the problem), but a new error comes:

Why is the new MPI installation interfering with make ? I want to go back to how things were before I stupidly broke all installations. The errors themselves are not the problem, the problem is why the new mpi installation is interfering with make.

It seems as if mpif90 has taken over make and gfortran. I suppose I didnt install it correctly, or probably I didnt uninstall the earlier one correctly.

Everything that worked earlier doesnt work suddenly. I use ubuntu 11.04 MPICH2-1.3.2

OpenSUSE Install :: BIOS Message - Fails To Launch From CD

May 16, 2011

Recently, for whatever reason (I am led to suspect a bad hard drive), Windows 7 failed to boot even in safe mode so I decided to just use a clear hard drive and install a far less troublesome OS, so I decided to try to use openSUSE. I used a backup laptop to download and burn the 4.7 GB release. Problem is, I haven't a clue how to get it to work. I thought just placing the burned DVD in when booting would be enough, but the BIOS keeps telling me it fails to launch from CD. Luckily, I had enough foresight to download a live CD just in case. I was able to install from the live CD, and when I checked the DVD, I was able to access all the content.

But I haven't a clue how to use it to upgrade/install all the extra software. Also, I should add I am completely new to this whole thing. While I have used Linux before, for the most part others dealt with all the administrative aspects of ensuring the system actually ran/had the needed software on it. Finally, I have one major restriction placed on this whole issue. I live out in the middle of no-where and the only internet I can get is limited to 200MB a day (I downloaded the CD/DVD elsewhere, but normally don't have a chance to do that). As such, being able to install from the DVD and not needing to download much software would be nice.

I suspect that Microsoft doesn't support usb 3.0 in their native distribution of win7, not sure though. And that my comp only has usb 3 ports. How do I check what kind of hardware my comp is packing, specially USB ports.

OpenSUSE Install :: Error Message Trying To Run Live KDE On A USB Thumb Drive?

Sep 14, 2010

been a fan of openSUSE for years now and peridocially go back and forth between Suse and Windows. However, I'm still an enthusiastic amateur when it comes to this stuff. Well, I bought a netbook (Acer Aspire ONE) several months back and loved Win 7 (a first for me). However, like all Windows, they all go down the crapper. So I'm wanting to completely wipe out Windows and go all Suse on my netbook. So I downloaded KDE Live and "burned" it on my USB. BTW, the image writer that are in the directions only writes, .raw files not .iso. I had to use a third party software.I then went into my BIOS and put the USB drive first on the booting list, and then restarted. Right off the bat I get the error message.Could not find kernel image: gfxbootAll I want to do is install openSUSE on my netbook

OpenSUSE Install :: Starting Xserver After Upgrade / Error Message That Current Kernel Can Not Be Loaded?

May 21, 2011

I was about to do upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4.I was following the guide I found in opensuse's website. I was to the point where I had to disable all 11.3 repositories and add the 11.4 at that point I forgot to change my nvidia repository ( I have a g210m graphic card).

thus after the upgrade the X could not start at all. I think this was because Yast could not find the nvidia driver.

Using text mode YaSt2 I added the nvidia driver but after restart I can not see and X running. I receive an error message that the current kernel can not be loaded!!!

I also checked in command line if there is something like Sax2.. but I couldnot find anything.

Programming :: SDL Static Library - Shared Library ?

Apr 7, 2009

I'm reading about shared, static, and dynamic libraries. What is SDL? Is it static, shared, or dynamic?

I always thought a library would be a lot of .h and .cpp files compiled separately into .o files and then if you compiled your own program you could use the -l parameter to link the library and it was all compiled together. Now I'm not so sure.

I don't even see any SDL .cpp files in my system anywhere. All I have are lots of SDL .h files in /usr/include/SDL and I don't really understand the code in them.

I'm making a wild guess here: SDL is a shared library. SDL itself is NOT compiled into my program, therefore SDL must be on any system my program tries to run on. When I compile and link SDL all it needs is the header files to know what SDL function and objects it can use. And then on every system it uses an already compiled SDL shared library thingy somewhere.

So... where is that part of SDL? All I can find are header files.

I'm thinking the advantage of shared libraries is that someone could say update SDL on their own system and take advantage of the new features without having to download new executables with the new version of SDL compiled into them for every program that uses SDL.

So if I'm making an editor and a game engine and they both use a lot of the same .cpp and .h files that I wrote and I'm tired of updating one and then the other and I need to turn them into a library, then a shared library might be kind of a silly solution. I could just make a static library. Right? Because it's not SDL. Nobody else is ever going to use this library.

OpenSUSE Install :: Every Boot Message Reads "previous Installation Failed"?

Nov 22, 2009

I finally did it. I took the plunge and moved away from MS and installed openSuSe on my system. I have a Gateway 650 with 160 MB of ram and yes it did install! To top it all off it also boots to Windows XP. This was all working fine until I < me < myself < yes I am a gonna admit >>USER ERROR<< booted the system into windows and I decided to see if my system needed to be DEFRAGGED. Yup I did.. I ran the defrag on the system and when it was all said and done my NTFS file system was all nice and pretty no more fragmented files.

So I decided to reboot the system to see that wonnerful boot loader of openSuSe and I chose the 11.2 to boot to and I get the message that the previous installation failed and it starts to run the script to "fix" the installation. It hangs on around 4% the installation. I hit ctrl alt del and it boots into the openSuSe partition and it seems to be working, but I have that durn annoying screen of the "previous installation failed". Are there any ideas on how to as my GF 4 yr old daughter says "flix it"? Or do I have to go through the PAINFULLY SLOW installation again?
