View 3 RepliesWhen I use Nautilus to copy files to my NAS-disk they end up with owner "root" and I cannot edit them. If I copy them back to my PC they have owner <username> and are editable.
My fstab is: //10.0.0.20/Qmultimedia /media/Mmedia cifs credentials=/root/.smbcreds,directio,iocharset=utf8,noacl,noperm,rw, nobootwait 0 0
Of course I want my Mmedia mount on the NAS to behave like another disk on my PC; i.e. owner should be <username> and the files should be editable.

I'm having issues copying files from a USB attached HDD (formatted by the NAS to EXT3) over to a NAS device. First some background info (maybe relevant or may not be): I upgraded the HDD in my NAS and now I'm unable to copy the files over from the old HDD while plugged into the NAS. Also tried copying over from windows 7 (64 & 32 bit) as well as an XP machine using EXT2FDS & IFS resulting in perpetual re-booting of all three machines. As a result of that I got a brainwave to try copying the files over from a bootable Linux DVD (Unbuntu 11.04) to the Nas over the network. I am in Unbuntu now but I am having problems copying to the NAS. It seems to work when I select individual files but when I select afolder/folders/sub folders to copy over an "error while copying" dialog box appears appears. For example: in "Show More Details" here is the copied text from an error: "Error stating file '/media/f0745264-c91b-4528-9fe3-e3469cdb13cc/Public/MANUALS/oliver_manual_99_99GM_tractors_O_7_1956.pdf': Input/output error"

Try again to mount the CD-ROM? <Yes> <No>"
I don't have an installation cd-rom! I put the .iso file onto a memory stick, inserted it into my old computer (which i will turn into a server later) , restarted it and got past the first two slides and got this error? Do I have to put the iso on a cd-rom?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhat I did to configure the network:
1) remove network manager
2) make ip address entries in /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/resolve.conf files.
when I do networking restart it is showing
"reconfiguring network" [OK].
However Google.com is an unknown host. I am getting the feeling I am missing something. The network adapter is showing green led . Does it have something to do with the microsoft networking that's running in my office?
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx.

Note : The file "/etc/mysql/my.cnf" is empty.
I have been trying to get Gnome and VNC installed on Ubuntu 10.10 Server 64 bit which is running on a VPS which I have no physical access to (only SSH). I have successfully done this on CentOS before (using guides I found through Google) but I cannot seem to get it set up in Ubuntu. First of all, I have good reasons for needing a *full* GUI via VNC on my VPS. I am aware of the security implications. Like I said, I have done this before on CentOS, but I want this machine to use Ubuntu as I need a Debian environment. So far, I have clean installed, then installed the desktop environment by:
Code:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
Then I have created a sudoer user through which I installed vnc4server following instructions on [URL] I have tried a variety of tweaks since then but the closest I have managed to come to connecting to VNC is a grey VNC window (of the correct geometry that I specified), with a black pattern with the X mouse pointer which moves around. I know I can't be far off with this, but I am not getting Gnome or the software installed. I am using TightVNC on my local Ubuntu machine to connect.
I just came to ask a question which its answer will help me to get rid of installing linux ubuntu server 64-bit edition over 100 times. (hell of a job) the point is to prepare an installation CD in which all my company requirements like specifide partitioner and some packages included. the question is, Is that possible? if yes, HOW?

I am going to install an FTP server on a headless server running ubuntu. The thing is that I want to be able to manage it completely via a web interface or a remote gui from any other system. The idea is that the manager of the accounts of the ftp could do his tasks without having to ssh into the server or anything (since he will completely ignore its a linux system and he does not need to know how to use it or log in or whatever). Is there any way to manage an ftp server like this?

Do you think this package might be corrupted, and if so can I manually specify a different version or a different package? I don't know what else to do; ctrl+c to kill it results in dpkg hangups that yeah, I can purge, but I'd rather not be doing that more than is really necessary.

I'm about to install Ubuntu Server 10.04 on my home server. I have looked around, a lot, without finding a nice way to record or log all the steps of the installation.
I see two general paths of how my problem might be solved:
Is there any installation log file which I could look in to see which options I choose? It would be best if it included all steps, including partitioning and, in my case, setting up an encrypted volume with a KVM-volume inside it.
Are there any ways to record the installation or take screenshots of it? It's done using the console (with no X window system available). Maybe fbgrab could work, but I do not know how to make it available during the installation.
I could also use a pen and paper. But that is error prone as I do not have the patience to write everything down. It's my last resort though.
I've got an old Gateway desktop machine that a friend gave me, but any time I try to do something in a window-based environment like GNOME or KDE, the system locks up. I'm under the impression that this is a driver issue since the ethernet and video are integrated on the motherboard and neither works appropriately.
I cracked the case and got the number for the motherboard, which is: 4000811. From here I'm not quite sure what to do to make sure I've got the right drivers for the motherboard in place and could use some I'm on 10.04 server and ONLY have access to a command line.
I'm installing ubuntu server 10.04 on HP Proliant DL140 G3, but in the partition part, HD doesn't appear.
two SATA disks are configured as RAID1, the card is HP Embedded SATA RAID, which came along with the server.
fdisk shows there're two disks, sda and sdb.
Ubuntu website says HP DL140 is certified.
is it because lack of drives?
