Ubuntu Networking :: Installing On A Windows Networking Environment

Feb 8, 2010

What I did to configure the network:

1) remove network manager

2) make ip address entries in /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/resolve.conf files.

when I do networking restart it is showing

"reconfiguring network" [OK].

However Google.com is an unknown host. I am getting the feeling I am missing something. The network adapter is showing green led . Does it have something to do with the microsoft networking that's running in my office?

Networking :: Cannot Ping Gateway Server Within Windows Networking Environment

Jul 11, 2011

I am trying to get a Linux (Slackware 13.37) working in a Windows networking environment. The IT support for this organisation does not extend to Linux support, so I'm limited in what help I can get for this.

I'm trying to get to the point where I can get to the internet to download what I need on this Linux machine.

The situation is this (*fictitious addresses used) -My Linux machine uses a fixed IP address (10.100.150.21)
My Windows machine uses a DHCP assigned IP address (10.100.150.213)Both Linux and Windows machine are configured to access the gateway server (10.100.150.1)So, I can ping the Linux machine from the Windows machine and vice-versa.I can ping the gateway machine from the Windows machine.I can browse Windows Shares on the network via SMB from the Linux machine.I CANNOT ping the gateway machine from the Linux machine with the Destination Host Unreachable message being the error message.

For actual internet access I need to access a proxy server but since the Linux machine can't even ping the gateway server, it fails to ping the proxy. Now, I have been told the gateway is a HW based router and for Windows machine they use some software for authentication to connect to the network. This software isn't available for Linux, so that's why I've been told to use a fixed IP address. My experience of networking is pretty basic and most of the Linux setup is done via running Slackware's setup program.

Networking :: Feasible / Desirable To Setup A Network Of Virtual Machines To Use As An Environment To Learn Networking?

Nov 18, 2010

I've been learning linux for a while now with half an eye on making a career out of it in future. One sizeable gap in my knowledge at the moment is networking. Is it feasible/desirable to set up a network of virtual machines to use as an environment to learn networking? My budget is non-existent so I was hoping to be able to get a basic understanding of the principles from installing a few desktops, a virtual gateway etc on VMware workstation on my laptop, and doing a lot of reading online.

Is this feasible, or will I just end up learning about virtual networks instead of real ones? Also how much power would be required, because my 3GB RAM lappy has just gone bang and all I have now is a (new) 1GB RAM lappy.

Networking :: Set Up A Mini LAN Environment At Home

Jun 22, 2011

I have 1 Desktop and 4 laptops...All the machines are a mix of Linux and Windows OS...The Desktop has only one OS - Windows XP - Pro..

The printer is a HP Deskjet connecting thru USB to the Desktop

The Desktop is connected thru ethernet cable and all the Desktops are connected Wirelessly to Internet..

I want to use the Desktop as a Hub for my Music files as I have too many and cant spend time copying from one machine to another...I also want to print directly from the laptop by sharing the printer.

There is a locational problem in the sense ,The Desktop is in the ground floor of my house...I have the laptops in 1st and 2nd floors..So at night time I cannot be running up and down to turn on / off the Desktop.

I installed VNS tight viewer which allows me to control the remote desktop from my laptops...It is beautiful in the sense at night I can switch off the desktop from first or 2 floor after the work is done.

But I guess you cant pull files from remote desktop as it seems like a chrooted environment... Even If I try to play any file it would be from my Desktop and not laptop....

So how do I go abt it ? ---Samba for share and VNC for physical control --(on/off)?

So I guess the ssh session is trying to start an x session. Obviously I don't want another session but instead use the existing x session that the machine runs anyway (and on which Rhythmbox runs)

googling I found a similar bug for f12 but no solution or fix or anything...

sorry if this is such a noob question. I've never dealt with xsessions in that way...

Networking :: How To Map Or Mount Whole Developing Environment Remotely?

Jan 9, 2011

I've got a problem about how to map or mount the whole developing environment remotely?

For example,There is a server A (CentOS) which I have got a normal user name and password but no root control. And my desktop B (Opensuse) which I've got the root authority.Normally, when I do some software developing, I use SSH to login to A. All the developing environment are installed on A, e.g. libraries, PATH, makefile, etc. However, there is a waste of my machine B, because all the test, debugging are performed on A.

I know that sshfs can map a path to local remotely. May I ask if there is a method to map or mount the whole working environment from A to B please?

Fedora Networking :: Nfs Permission Error On Diskless Environment

Dec 9, 2010

I'm trying to set-up a diskless environment on my home network, based on a F12 server and one FC14 client and I have a problem that I think is related to NFS, but googling around I cannot find any solution.
Basicly the client boots correctly, gdm fires up showing the login window, but the system doesn't let me in, if I switch to console (CTRL+ALT+F2) I cannot login with both standard and super user getting a "permission denied" error.

I tryed to mount the exported fs on another computer and ls -l on the mounted dir shows both user and group set to nobody.

If i mount the exported dir on server side (i.e. mount -t nfs localhost:/...) permissions user and group shows correctly

Networking :: Getting Two Servers To Communicate (Ping) In VMWare Environment

Dec 18, 2010

I am testing with Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10 in a VMWare environment. I've installed two SLES10 servers, named sles1 and sles2. I can't get the two servers to communicate, even a simple ping won't work. The "Network Adapter" in VMWare is set to "bridged", a setting which has worked fine when installing WinXP in VMWare and connecting to the Internet. I have configured the Network Settings as follows:

SLES1:
-Statically assigned IP Address
-IP-address: 192.168.0.20
-Subnet: 255.255.255.0 (/24)
-Hostname: sles1

Hostname/DNS tab:
-Hostname: sles1
-Domain Name: local
-Name server: blank

Routing tab:
-Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (= my router connected to the Internet)
SLES2: same as sles1, with IP 192.168.0.22 and Hostname sles2

With these network settings, the two servers seem totally unable to communciate.
-When I ping sles2 from sles1, I always get the error message: connect: Network is unreachable
-Whatever way I ping, either ping sles2, ping sles2.local, ping 192.168.0.22, whatever, the error message is always the same.
-Even if I ping sles1 from sles1 (= "pinging myself"), I get the same error message.
-Only if I ping localhost, I get a proper ping result.

Networking :: Setup A Firewall In Home Network Environment

May 2, 2010

I am attempting to set up a firewall in my home network environment. the rest of the environment is windows, sorry I am attempting now so bear with me. what I have is a cable modem coming in, then my fedora 11 box with 2 nics, then the wireless router and the rest of the network.

everything works fine until I put the linux box in. If I put the firwall in the firewall sees the internet but the wireless router directly after does not. I am doing something wrong with the dhcp I am guessing. I dont want the firewall to give the address to the network I want the router to. I tried to get the firewall to do it (yum install dhcp leafnode) but it kept saying something didn't work right.

so I figure I will let the cable modem give the firewall an ip and the router give the rest of the network their ip's but how do I get the firewall and router to see each other and allow passthrough?

I also downloaded the firmware iwl3945 for my Intel Pro Wireless 3945 and manually installed it, reloaded the iwl3945 module and enabled NetworkManager. I could then get the wireless network connection worked on my graphical environment. I installed additional software manually by using the terminal window (Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal) and everything worked perfectly.

However, when I switched to text-based environment by issuing the commend "sudo init 3" (changing the user level) and logging in as root, I could not get any internet connection. I tried to use lynx and I got the error message: "Unable to connect to remote host". I am a complete newbie in Linux and I tried to google and search for solution within centos.org but I could not find.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba And Windows Networking - Read / Write Access To All Folders Contents From Both Machines

I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

Fedora Networking :: Wired Networking Not Connecting In 12 With Windows Internet Connection Sharing?

Jan 16, 2011

I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.

Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

Ubuntu :: Installing Gnome Desktop Environment On 10.04?

May 24, 2011

I've just rented a dedicated server from [URL]

Its a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 and I want to be able to use gnome desktop environment and connect to it with NX Client from my windows 7.

I have done the basics..

update
upgrade
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment

I have done this installations a couple of times before and everytime it's been working for me.

I emailed their support about it as well.

They told me it should work by just doing these first steps, but since it didn't they asked to take a look at it. So they did.

I got this mail back from them:

It seemed that your server is missing some packages/services.

Therefore, I need to ask you first if you acknowledge the ability of being charged with the additional support fee of 37,25 Euro per 15 minutes support?

I will never pay more for 15 minutes of support then I payed for the server thats for sure..

Fedora Installation :: Installing Desktop Environment (KDE 4) F12

Feb 25, 2010

I installed Fedora 12 on my computer using the install DVD and that worked fine. However, upon booting up, I was dismayed to find that all I could access was the command line where it says:
[root@localhost~]#

So naturally I went searching and found that the problem was that no desktop environment had been installed. So I went to try to install KDE since I really like the way its screenshots worked and a number of my friends recommended it. I hooked my computer into my router(since I'm finding wireless on my machine is going to be tricky right now) and used yum to try to install the desktop. I found the appropriate code at [URL] to install with yum. I promptly did and allowed yum to do its thing, downloading and installing all the necessary files after which I went through the steps on the website.

The problem comes now, when I try to boot my new desktop environment from the command line. After entering "startx" I get the following error:
xauth: creating nw authority file /root/serverauth.1250
xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): no server "/usr/bin//X" in PATH
Use the -- option or make sure that /usr/bin is in your path and that "/usr/bin/X" is a program or a link to the right type of server for your display.

Xorg Common X server for most displays
Xvfb Vertual frame buffer
Xfake kdrive-based virtual fram buffer
Xnest X server nested in a window on another x server
xephyr kdrive-based nested X server

How to get the startx command to work. Or maybe I'm not even supposed to use startx...

Fedora X86/64bit :: Installing The Xen Runtime Environment Package Or The Xen Emulator For KVM?

Feb 28, 2009

I recently gave the boot to Windows and installed Fedora 10. Under Windows, I was using VirtualBox for all of my virtualized computing needs. I had set up a virtual network with two virtual machines - one running Windows Server 2K3 and the other running Windows 2000 Pro. I could run both VMs at the same time and still use the host OS. Now I am trying a similar setup under Fedora, I am using VirtualBox to run Server 2K3 and Windows XP. The problem I encounter is that when I run one VM, one of my CPU cores rockets to 100% usage and the other hovers around 40% - 60% usage. Is there a way to enhance performance so I can run both VMs at the same time? Third, what would be the effects of me installing the Xen runtime environment package or the Xen emulator for KVM?

System specs:

OS: Fedora 10 x86-64
CPU: Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (Toledo)
RAM: 2GB PC3200
GPU: GeForce 7600 GT XXX
