Ubuntu Networking :: Installing WICD But That Doesn't Show Up Either?
May 10, 2010
Trying this on a Lenovo with 10.04. but after a few updates and some basic software (restricted extras) the network manager is missing. I tried installing WICD but that doesn't show up either. Going to the startup applications, it is listed and checked, and dragging it to the panel works, but clicking it does nothing.

I use Wicd 1.7.0 to manage my wired/wireless network connections and it worked well with Ubuntu 10.10. Now that I upgraded to 11.04 the wireless indicator does not show up on the top bar, even though the wireless is connected and working. I have no way to see my connection, or view available wireless connections. I looked through system settings, but don't see any options for selecting what shows up on the top bar.

I have a Dell Mini with Unbuntu Hardy 8.04 with a Broadcom STA wireless card BCM4312 802.11b/g. In April the Network Manager stopped working. After trying various fixes, based on advice and instructions posted for others who had the same issue, today I decided to completely uninstall the Network Manager and install wicd- which seems like a working alternative. I uninstalled the Network Manager and used the installation instructions for wicd (URL...). While connected to the internet with a wired connection, in my Synaptic Package Manager I entered the new address deb URL... hardy extras. Then I opened a terminal and entered. It looks like an argument is needed, but I have no idea how to add that to the command. I've found the key file (I think) here URL...but I don't know what to do next.

I am trying to use nm-applet with Arch/Openbox/tint2. I can't use wicd-gtk because wicd won't work with ad-hoc networks. I have tested nm-applet in Ubuntu/Openbox/tint2 and it works fine.
The error message is:
Code:
[esteeven@piccolo ~]$ nm-applet
** Message: applet now removed from the notification area

I have an ASUS M4A785-m and it has the Realtek 8112L gigabit nic. The weird thing is, the 10.10 rc saw the nic card just fine, and windows sees the card so it's not disabled in the bios.
Ubuntu says i have no network connections and i need to get internet. Any suggestions?
I should also note that i'm running from the livecd and lspci shows that it detects my NIC. but my NIC isn't "detected" in that it can be used.

Not even when I run "\ipadress"..If anything is there away to delete everything related to Samba and start over?

I deleted all APs in my Wireless Section of network manager. After that, the whole network manager icon disappeared. I added the icon back on the panel, but I don't think its the right one. It doesn't do the two green cicles thing when I connect my ethernet wire in. It also doesn't show any wireless AP when I left click on the icon. It doesn't even have an X mark on the bottom left of the icon when no network is detected

I have been routing network traffic based on MAC addresses, so we can distribute traffic evenly over a series of WAN IP addresses.Everything seems to be going well, but I have a very curious problem. One of the users can connect to the network without problem, but I don't see him in my network administration application (neither his MAC address or leased IP address). At the same time, I'm trying to identify other unknown computers on my network based on MAC addresses I don't have on file.

Ubuntu 9.04 with working wlan. I had to restart router & wap. It doesn't seem to ever retry to connect. I know my router & wap are good, I have wireless working on other laptop (running Puppy) I had to go into 'edit connections' in drop down and use 'wireless' tab then edit 'wireless connection 1' and hit 'apply' is there a better way to do this? also, no connections show up with command 'iwconfig' edit: with ifconfig, eth1 si showing data my ip address and packets sent & rcvd. I think I'll try do duplicate this event and use 'ifconfig eth1 down' and then up again to see if it reconnects.

I have installed Slackware 13.1 without a problem and have a working wired ethernet connection. However I need to set up wireless but each time I try to do this using wicd I have a total system crash during the start up screens at the very last line before the welcome line appears.
Nothing works to resolve it, and I need to press and hold the start button and restart. I have checked the md5sum, installed the software again several times but the same happens each time which results in me having to reinstall.
I have installed wicd using slackpkg update, then slackpkg install wicd.
I have also tried downloading wicd from the slackware /extras folder and installing it on its own. Either way the same happens.
I have tried various manual approaches to setting up wireless following various links but again without success.
I now have a clean install again but am not wanting the same to happen.
Can anyone suggest what I might need to do?
I am using an intel Pentium 4, 2.53 ghz, 512Mb ram, GeForce4 MX 440.

I have two wifi routers. If I stand next to the main one with my laptop I can connect and access the internet no problem. The other router is in my office, and the bridging is messed up, so while I see the essid and bssid using 'iwlist scanning' and nm-tool, I can't connect to it.
Now, my main router's signal still reaches to my office, just not as strong as the borked router in my office. I need to be able to choose which wifi network to connect to without wasting time walking between rooms. I added entries for both in network-manager, but it doesn't show them in the list when I left click the tray icon! How the do I connect to the network I want?

I have a dell insp 1545 windows7-ubuntu9.10 dual boot. the linux os would not activate the wireless network function in the network manager (but the cricket broadband was being detected and was in fact active). well, i did a little looking around and found another network mgr (wicd?, i think it's called... or something like that) and installed it. IT is working, but now the cricket broadband is down, which is my mainstay internet connection right now. i'm thinking that maybe it's got something to do w/the flipflop.sh function but that's just a wild guess.

I'v just installed wicd. I can't get it to sart, I get errors saying that wicd couldn't connect to it's dbus interface and the wicd deamon has shut down. Then there's a report from SELinux saying that it's preventing /usr/bin/python "write" access on /etc/dhcp/manager-settings.conf and that access is denied to wicd. I can get wicd to start if I su to root, but I'd like to not have to do that every time I boot. Is there a fix?

If you install Wicd (it is in the repositories) any network-manager will be automatically de-installed.But eventually, Wicd will still not work properly.Solution:Open your package manager and type in: network-managerIf Wicd is installed, EVERYTHING related to network-manager must be thrown out, sorry: removed!

I just updated my system to a new kernel with the update manager and now my WICD no longer obtains an IP address. Everytime I try it says "Connection Failed: Unable to get IP address".It was working fine before and even when I reboot into an older kernel it still doesn't work.I'm using a Belking Wireless G adapter.I would have tried downloading another network manager but since I can't even access the internet I'm stuck with changing current settings and nothing seems to work.

Well it seems like every 5 min the update manager is barging in telling me to update so I did last night and then this morning I turn on my computer and a window pops up that says "wicd needs your password" or something to that effect so I put it in. Then I notice wicd is not running. So I click on it in the menu and it pops up in awn for a second then disappears. As I have said before I am fairly new to linux so Im having trouble figuring this out. I don't know any commands i should run or where to start even. My computer is not much use to me without the internet so I would really like to get this fixed.

Before I changed the faulty wifi card I installed Wicd. Incidentally it didn't remove Network Manager, a bug that's reported in Launchpad. With the new wifi working well enough with Network Manager, I used Synaptic to remove Wicid, or so I thought.I happen to be checking .xsession-errors and there's an error reported about wicid tray desktop. I removed it and no more errors appear.
After looking for advice here and on the web I used apt-get remove and purge yet a file search of wicd still finds 25 entries, in /etc/, /usr/ and /var/.Some are archives and some are logs but some aren't, why are they still there and can I clean things up?
