Ubuntu Networking :: Installing Wicd Without Internet
Jul 5, 2010
I have a Dell Mini with Unbuntu Hardy 8.04 with a Broadcom STA wireless card BCM4312 802.11b/g. In April the Network Manager stopped working. After trying various fixes, based on advice and instructions posted for others who had the same issue, today I decided to completely uninstall the Network Manager and install wicd- which seems like a working alternative. I uninstalled the Network Manager and used the installation instructions for wicd (URL...). While connected to the internet with a wired connection, in my Synaptic Package Manager I entered the new address deb URL... hardy extras. Then I opened a terminal and entered. It looks like an argument is needed, but I have no idea how to add that to the command. I've found the key file (I think) here URL...but I don't know what to do next.

Well it seems like every 5 min the update manager is barging in telling me to update so I did last night and then this morning I turn on my computer and a window pops up that says "wicd needs your password" or something to that effect so I put it in. Then I notice wicd is not running. So I click on it in the menu and it pops up in awn for a second then disappears. As I have said before I am fairly new to linux so Im having trouble figuring this out. I don't know any commands i should run or where to start even. My computer is not much use to me without the internet so I would really like to get this fixed.

I installed Enlightenment into my machine and, in the course of the installation, Network Manager was removed. I now have no internet connection. I've searched and tried a couple of possible solutions here but I cannot get them to work. When I try to use a downloaded deb file Gdebi cannot install it. It seems that if I re-install Network Manager I'll lose a lot of my Enlightenment installation. What I'd like to do is install Wicd. I dual boot with Win 7 so all is not lost. I understand that there's a way to istall Wicd from the command line without an internet connection but I cannot figure out how to do it.

Trying this on a Lenovo with 10.04. but after a few updates and some basic software (restricted extras) the network manager is missing. I tried installing WICD but that doesn't show up either. Going to the startup applications, it is listed and checked, and dragging it to the panel works, but clicking it does nothing.

I'm at a family member's house for the holiday and was trying to use their wifi. Its a WEP connection (I tried to tell them to change but they won't listen). In the wicd connection manager, I see their network, set the encryption to WEP (passphrase), enter the password, and hit connect. It says bringing up the card, checking authentication, then gets to Acquiring IP address, sits there for a minute, then times out saying unable to connect.
I know I used the right password because it passed the Authenticating part (tested with a wrong password that hangs at this point). I know that my wifi card works because I used a store's unsecured wifi connection through wicd. I know the wifi network works because my brother's windows netbook can get on just fine. I'm running through the same router right now with a wire instead. Why I can't connect wirelessly?

I am trying to use nm-applet with Arch/Openbox/tint2. I can't use wicd-gtk because wicd won't work with ad-hoc networks. I have tested nm-applet in Ubuntu/Openbox/tint2 and it works fine.
The error message is:
Code:
[esteeven@piccolo ~]$ nm-applet
** Message: applet now removed from the notification area

I have installed Slackware 13.1 without a problem and have a working wired ethernet connection. However I need to set up wireless but each time I try to do this using wicd I have a total system crash during the start up screens at the very last line before the welcome line appears.
Nothing works to resolve it, and I need to press and hold the start button and restart. I have checked the md5sum, installed the software again several times but the same happens each time which results in me having to reinstall.
I have installed wicd using slackpkg update, then slackpkg install wicd.
I have also tried downloading wicd from the slackware /extras folder and installing it on its own. Either way the same happens.
I have tried various manual approaches to setting up wireless following various links but again without success.
I now have a clean install again but am not wanting the same to happen.
Can anyone suggest what I might need to do?
I am using an intel Pentium 4, 2.53 ghz, 512Mb ram, GeForce4 MX 440.

I have a dell insp 1545 windows7-ubuntu9.10 dual boot. the linux os would not activate the wireless network function in the network manager (but the cricket broadband was being detected and was in fact active). well, i did a little looking around and found another network mgr (wicd?, i think it's called... or something like that) and installed it. IT is working, but now the cricket broadband is down, which is my mainstay internet connection right now. i'm thinking that maybe it's got something to do w/the flipflop.sh function but that's just a wild guess.

I'v just installed wicd. I can't get it to sart, I get errors saying that wicd couldn't connect to it's dbus interface and the wicd deamon has shut down. Then there's a report from SELinux saying that it's preventing /usr/bin/python "write" access on /etc/dhcp/manager-settings.conf and that access is denied to wicd. I can get wicd to start if I su to root, but I'd like to not have to do that every time I boot. Is there a fix?

Today I put in two brand new RAM sticks, same brand as the two I already have in there only difference is the new ones don't have the giant heatsinks that cover the stick. I have 4 slots for RAM, and I had 2 gigs in there, 1 gig in the first, and 1 in the 3rd. I put the two new ones in the empty slots. Everything worked fine, so it seemed. I was able to boot up, log into Ubuntu. It looked like everything worked, said I had internet access by the icon up on the top panel. The only thing that was curious was my weather app wasn't updating. So I went into a web browser, and the home page showed up fine. Which was the default, the ubuntu google search engine. I tried to go to another site though, and it kept looking for the site, for a while but never found it. I tried multiple sites, same thing. I tried to ping www.ubuntu.com, and www.yahoo.com and it just hung for a while, after a while it couldn't find it. I tried ifconfig eth0, and even just ifconfig. It showed that eth0 was connected, it had the ip address, the DNS address, the MAC, everythting. Only problem I could see was at the end it said something like Interupts: 18, I don't know if that's normal or not.
So I tried then to reset the router, no difference. I tried resetting the hub (at least I think it's a hub, could be a switch or something), which is connected to the router, and the hub connects to my computer. Now that, made it worse. Now the icon for my internet has disappeared, well it tried to reconnect but can't. ifconfig eth0 brings up no ip address anymore, no DNS, no nothing. I tried rebooting, didn't help.
So here I am, and I'm definatly in need of some help. I find it very hard to believe that adding new RAM would kill my ability to get online, that doesn't make any sense to me. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit, had 2 gigs in there, and now have 4. Edit: I tried rebooting once again, and this time when logging on Ubuntu it for some reason checked my filesystem for errors, found none as far as I can tell, then logged on. Once I logged in, it connected again to the internet, but it's doing the same thing it was before I restarted the hub. Says I'm connected, but can't visit any webpage, weather isn't updating, but homepage is showing up, etc.[URL].. Which is the same RAM I had in there, minus the one in there had a giant grey incasing/heatsink on them.

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto an older laptop for my boss. However, after installation I lost all internet capabilities... both through wireless and ethernet connections. There is zero indication that Ubuntu is picking up any wireless connections at all and when I plugged into an ethernet connection Ubuntu acts as if it is trying to connect, however unsuccessfully. I have eliminated the internet connection as my problem because I was able to connect with my laptop running 9.10 with no problem. I have searched and searched everywhere for fixes to this problem however 99% of them need an internet connection to install the required firmware and drivers... is there any OFFLINE solution out there? The computer is a Compaq Presario 2200 with a Boradcom Corp BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller

I've read a lot on the internet about various ways of doing this but i've been unsuccessful each time. Basically what i've done is accidently un-installed network-manager because I was having trouble staying connected on my WPA network. The easiest way of reinstalling it I know of is using the CD but I don't have a CD ROM drive and the pen drive I used to install it I no longer have.
I tried using a program called Keryx but you need python installed and from some reason this doesn't come with ubuntu 10.10. I've also downloaded the .deb packages but I still need to download 200kb which is a killer. I've also downloaded it from here too [URL] but the install file makes no sense to me as i'm not a massive linux user. One last thing reinstalling isn't really an option as i've already put a lot of time into setting up this computer.

I had Fedora 7 which works fine with my PCI card Linksys WMP54G-EU (00:0b.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 03)).
It ran with ndiswrapper.1.51.
Yesterday I installed the live-CD Fedora 10 on a new partition in another hard drive and so I have Fedora 10 but WITHOUT Internet connection.
I tried to install Ndiswrapper but the 'make' command doesn't exist in my Fedora 10 !
What are all the things I need to download from Internet to ensure the several commands like 'make uninstall', 'make', 'make install'... and to ensure installing Ndiswrapper ?

If you install Wicd (it is in the repositories) any network-manager will be automatically de-installed.But eventually, Wicd will still not work properly.Solution:Open your package manager and type in: network-managerIf Wicd is installed, EVERYTHING related to network-manager must be thrown out, sorry: removed!

I just updated my system to a new kernel with the update manager and now my WICD no longer obtains an IP address. Everytime I try it says "Connection Failed: Unable to get IP address".It was working fine before and even when I reboot into an older kernel it still doesn't work.I'm using a Belking Wireless G adapter.I would have tried downloading another network manager but since I can't even access the internet I'm stuck with changing current settings and nothing seems to work.
