I just installed an Ubuntu partition on my MSI U210 netbook. Wireless worked fine on the Windows XP that was there before, but not on Ubuntu. I tried plugging in the Ethernet, and that had no effect.

I've just received my new Samsung N250 Plus Netbook which comes with Windows 7 Starter (yuk). I read a post on Ebuyer from someone who has installed ubuntu on his N250 so thought I'd give it a go tonight.
My main concern is whether my wi-fi card (Broadcom 802.11n according to windows) will work when I remove windows and install ubuntu. I intend to use the netbook for internet use only while working abroad.
Is it possible to test it works by running ubuntu from my USB stick first (without removing windows 7)?
I installed Ubuntu (10.04) today and it has gone smoothly except for the fact that I can't connect to the Internet when in Ubuntu (connection works fine in Windows XP). I am using a wireless USB card (Linksys WUSB600N) to connect.
The weird thing is that the card detects all the local networks, asks me for a password to my network, and it even says it is connected to my network after I put the password in -- but when I open Firefox no pages will load.
There is another weird quirk as well: Ubuntu will not restart or shut down properly (it hangs around indefinitely with the little white / orange dots going across the screen) unless I first remove the wireless card from the USB slot. But that doesn't bother me as badly as the lack of Internet.
As the title says I have done the stupid mistake of changing the name of two partitions (the main for the W7 and another just for documents), I did not change the name of the Ubuntu 11 partition. I used the Computer Management from windows to do the changing. Now nothing works, it does not find the Grub to initiate or a not even gives me the menu to choose the windows. When you change the name does it change the drive letter? Couldn't understand why this happen.

I have been able to connect in the past and I am still able to connect in Windows 7.When I try to connect to the university WiFi, a valid IP address is assigned to me and the gateway address appears to be correct, so I don't see a problem in the DHCP negotations. Same with my university's Ethernet: I get a valid IP address, but I can't connect to the internet.When I browse to any site with Chromium/Chrome/ Firefox/lynx/curl, the page is stuck at "Sending request". I have tried disabling my firewall - that didn't solve anything.I don't know what else I can try and the campus' network administrators are puzzled. How can I resolve my issue?

Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.

I want to install Ubuntu Netbook Edition alongside Windows 7. My netbook has a manufacture partitioned drive. I deleted the second partition and it is now free space. When I go to install Ubuntu, I am only given one drive: /dev/sda. What partition is this. I want to install this on the free space area that was originally the second partition. I originally tried to do this, before I deleted the partiton, however, I still had the same issue.

I�ve tried practically every suggestion quoted on this message board �downloading drivers, from Samsung and Realtek which won�t open also linux versions with the same result, trying the Ubuntu compilation of Wine etc, etc. Am about to give up, which is a pity, because the Netbook version Ubuntu is very user friendly.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWifi Works, but No internet When I'm directly connected to the Wifi router, via LAN cable, I have internet (this is how I'm posting now) I have a desktop computer, this is also the same problem. Because of this it hasn't updated to 10.04 yet. Its still at the version previous (9.??). Might be relevant. This problem began when my wife's Mac had an update that killed her Wifi access, and we had to reset the Wifi Router. She didn't change anything, we just re-inputed all the data as before (passwords, ID). Since then I can't access my internet even if I can connect to the wifi.
Other Observations In the office, my Laptop's ubuntu side has no problems with accessing Internet through the wifi. My Windows side is unaffected (both Desktop and Laptop). One time I can connect, but when that happened on that same day she can't. Possibly a fluke or coincidence. I read the post of a similar matter, where the person's Empathy still works. when I tried check if that was the case with me, after getting my Empathy to work it began to work again. But this hasn't worked in a succeeding attempt. Below is my system information if it may be relevant.

I just bought a TRENDNET TDM C4000 (=modem/ wiredrouter) and got it working. If I connect my computer with through the ethernet port directly, the internet will work. However, when I try connecting the ends of the ethernet cable on the modem and my wireless router, it's not transmitting. I know I set up the wireless router correctly because it worked with my previous modem. I just need to know how to configure my modem so that it works with my wireless router (D-Link DI-524).
I have a long wired ethernet wire to satisfy my academic needs for the internet at the moment but my mother is not able to surf the internet and it would be more convenient for myself to put the wire back to my desktop and have my laptop browsing wirelessly.
I used the "Upgrade" option the last couple of nights to go from 8.04 LTS and was going to go to latest version. Well got the upgrade done last night on 9.10 and now Broadcom gigabit wired connect will not connect to internet. Can ping router just fine. Just cannot get outside of it. Shows as configuredin ifconfig. But the name of it under the network manager is odd. Its ifupdown (eth0) (default) and maps to ent1.

I have somehow lost my internet connection, but strangely my email still works...!?!? My router is showing all the correct green lights, but I cannot get to any url. My wired internet was working fine and dandy under Maverick until today. For no apparent reason, it stopped. The router works fine. All other computers are able to connect. I've tried using different cables with no luck. I have a Biostar A785G3 motherboard with an integrated Realtek RTL8111DL ethernet controller.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently set up a new web/file server with 9.10 server x64 with 2 NICs and I am trying to configure eth0 to respond to my LAN for internal samba filesharing and eth1 to handle website/ftp requests on my static IP, but whenever eth0 is up the server is not accessible at 173.XX.165.65 for web or ftp but both work fine at 10.1.10.100. When eth0 is down, public IP works fine. I have set /etc/network/interfaces like this:

Today I got my laptop back after its motherboard was replaced (soundcard failure) and I am having problems connecting to the internet. Connection to the wifi network is succesful, but Pidgin is not connecting ("SSL Connection Failed") and I can't view any webpages in Firefox. I loaded up Win7 and everything worked fine, connecting to the same wifi network and using the same proxy settings ("No Proxy").

I've attached 4 screen photos; 2 when internet is working (Working ifcomfig & Working route -n) & 2 when internet is NOT-working (NonWorking ifcomfig & NonWorking route -n).
The 1st I notice when looking @ working ifconfig is line 3 under eth0, inet addr:192.168.1.5 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0, is missing on NonWorking ifconfig.
I have internet from KabelBW (cable modem which doesnt require any username,password,dns,mac...) they gave me a cisco modem, I connected it with my asus router and it has been working fine since today! when I woke up I turned on my lap top and loged in skype, but I couldnt open google, then I tried yahoo..nothing! I havent made and changes yesterday! I dont know what is wrong! View 9 Replies View RelatedI had the previous edition of Ubuntu Desktop Edition installed on my Acer Aspire 1 and it asked me to upgrade which I then confirmed and proceeded to do. When it was done it started up with the Ubuntu Netbook edition and Samba was removed.
How do I access a windows share with a netbook edition, because there's no places menu? What programs / addons do I need to install to be able to access windows shares when using the netbook edition?? Otherwise, how can I revert back to my previous edition of Ubuntu which I was happy with?
I posted this already in the absolute beginner section, but no answer was found, so I thought I might try this place..Long story as short as possible:
- I installed Ubuntu 9.10 for a friend who was fed up with WinXP crashing all the time
- After the install, networks was broken. I could ping sites outside the LAN, could connect to the router via firefox, but NO application could access the web. - The router works just fine, I tried with my own notebook.
- Disabling ipv6 in grub (edit /etc/default/grub and 'sudo update-grub') seemed to solve the problem.
- Then update the standard packages + install restricted extras and boom, Network gone: No ping to sites outside the LAN, no nothing. Still can connect fine to the router and even the remote desktop connection works, connecting over the internet. But that's it.
I have tried setting the mpu to a value recommended by my isp, I have set static ip and dns, I really don't now what to try any more.
I've only installed Ubuntu 10.04 Server yesterday, and it was the first time I had ever used it. As far and I can tell I have my Apache server up and running. When I go to localhost I get the 'It works!' page.
I tried checking my port in Windows, after I have Xampp loaded up, it says the port is working fine, and the site loads up properly, which leads me to believe the problem not in my router.
I've installed ddclient and put the proper information in as far as I can see but it still doesn't work. I've been testing my port here: [url]

My Windows machine can ping Ubuntu by name, but Ubuntu can only ping the Windows machine by using it's IP address. This was working fine in both directions until I purged Samba. After purging Samba, I couldn't ping in either direction unless I used the IP address. I did some reading and found that Samba provides NetBIOS functionality that allows the machines to resolve host names without a DNS. Since I'm not running a local DNS, I decided to reinstall Samba. Unfortunately, I've not been able to restore it to full working condition. I don't want to use hosts files as all the IP addresses are assigned automatically by DHCP. I want to be able to access the Windows machine by name.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Linksys WRT54GS and use grub to dual boot a Win7/Ubuntu 10.10 setup. The PC is jacked directly into the router, not using wireless, and only seems to connect to the net when I'm using Ubuntu! To make matters more interesting, my Dell Mini 9 with Ubuntu 10.4 remix and my fiances 2011 Macbook Pro (OSX) work just fine right now with wireless and wired connections to the same router, respectively. Thoughts? Still sort of a noob to Ubuntu, rarely post on the forums since most things are already asked, but I can provide more information if necessary.

we can log into the vpn and can ssh, http, ftp in the various servers on the internal network. however when trying to view Samba/Windows shares over any windows machine, they fail to connect. BUT we can vpn in on any android device and using a samba app view the Samba & Windows shares on any server we try.
If im logged in the network internally, there does not seem to be a problem. Only if we VPN in from the outside.
I just want to be able to copy the files from a cd that is only compatible with windows to and new cd that is compatible with ubuntu
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Gateway ML6721 laptop that uses a Realtek RTL8187B for wireless comms. I am very new to Ubuntu and Linux. I am trying out linux using a usb stick, 16Gb with a 4Gb persistence. If I stay in the same room as the router there is no problem. If I walk too far, I get disconnected. Works fine in windows throughout the whole house. Is there a setting I can change or do I need to use a different driver?
