Networking :: Enabling WiFi On Netbook Running 10.4

trying to bring back to useful ife an old laptop: an Acer 1360.
I have installed kmod-ndiswrapper to assist me. The laptop has one of these:
Quote:
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Linksys, A Division of Cisco Systems [AirConn] INPROCOMM IPN 2220 Wireless LAN Adapter (rev 01)
I have grabbed the Windows drivers for this card and installed:
Quote:
[graham@old-acer ~]$ ndiswrapper -l
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper, it will be ignored in a future release.
neti2220 : driver installed
device (17FE:2220) present
lsmod shows:
Quote:
ndiswrapper 158060 0
Looking good to me - (is that conf file required an issue?) but Network Manager doesn't recognise that I have any wlan running at all. The Wifi button on the laptop is on but 'red' and not 'green' for up and running.
Um. Next steps? I suppose I could buy a compatible wifi card and slap it in?

This may be more suited for the networking forums, but I figured Community Cafe would be well rounded enough for someone to tell me if this is even possible (with minimal configuration that is). There are a few places I travel where I only have a wired connection to the Internet (no wifi), but when this happens is there a simple way to create an adhoc network so wireless devices can route through my computer and to the network? Reason I'm asking is I'm thinking of getting an iPad or iPod Touch which have wireless connections, but in the cases where my laptop is using a wired ethernet connection and the wireless card isn't used, I'd like to create an adhoc wireless network that'll let such wireless devices work.

I got my netbook in the mail yesterday, opened it up, logged in, and Windows 7 was installed. Being a Windows hater my whole life, I followed a friend's advice and downloaded Ubuntu netbook, made a USB drive, changed the BIOS settings, all that. Here's when the stupidity occurs--I decided to go ahead and install Ubuntu without trying it, and to delete Windows to do so. A couple minutes later I realized that was a really, really stupid idea, so in a panic I turned my netbook off. I turned it back on and it was still on install but not really moving, so I powered off and on again and went back to the "Try Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu" choice screen. I chose "Try Ubuntu" and found that it did not recognize my home wifi network or ask me to join--or any wifi network, for that matter.
Now, it did recognize my wifi network the few minutes I spent on Windows 7, so I tried to change the BIOS settings back to where I could just use that until I figured out the problem. But no matter which setting I tried (HDD/SDD just gives me a black screen, and FDD and LAN do the same as the USB drive), I can't get back to Windows, so I guess I did delete it. Which leaves me with a netbook that can only connect to the internet via ethernet cable. Which kind of defeats the purpose.
Questions I should answer:
1. How am I trying to get online? My home's wireless network. We have a router. All the other laptops in the house connect fine.
2. Who is my internet service provider (and in which country?) COX, United States.
3. Can you get online with any other method? Yes, the internet works fine with an ethernet cable.
4. How am I getting online to post in this forum? My parent's laptop.
5. What hardware are you using? Toshiba N505 netbook and a router. I can give more information about the router if you need it, but I doubt it's the program since the other laptops are fine.
Give me one moment and I will add some code that it gives me when I put in the commands this website tells me to.My two final questions are:
1. Is there any way to recover Windows without buying it again?
2. How can I get Ubuntu to connect to my home wifi network?
EDIT: Here's some code. I have no idea what it means, but hopefully you do.
To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".See "man sudo_root" for details.

I've installed successfully the ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix on my DELL Latitude 430.Everything work out of the box except the wifi, I cannot find a way to get working.Using the lshw command, I can see that the interface is listed, but status is disabled. On the Network Manager, status I get is device not ready. As a FYI, bluetooth seems working perfect (I've not tried to pair with any device)as this is the only roadblock I face before enjoying Ubuntu on my laptop.

am currently using Windows 7 across my networked PCs at home.
I've just received my new Samsung N250 Plus Netbook which comes with Windows 7 Starter (yuk). I read a post on Ebuyer from someone who has installed ubuntu on his N250 so thought I'd give it a go tonight.
My main concern is whether my wi-fi card (Broadcom 802.11n according to windows) will work when I remove windows and install ubuntu. I intend to use the netbook for internet use only while working abroad.
Is it possible to test it works by running ubuntu from my USB stick first (without removing windows 7)?

I've one lenovo 3000 g430 4152 laptop on which i have windows but previously installed debian 5.03 and for enabling the wireless i've to download broadcom b43legacy and install it by compiling because the backports kernel doesn't work with lenovo and after installing debian accidently switched of the wireless by the slide button on laptop
but on next boot i was not able to enable the wireless either by the slide button or fn+f5 which is the key for enabling it the wireless then on some forum i got advise that i can only re-enable by installing windows because lenovo drivers are available for only windows for this model... my question is that is there any solution for it in debian and also there is one more problem that i've to press fn+f8 twice on each boot for enabling the touchpad...

For two days I've tried to get my new Belkin 7050 wifi stick up and running. No matter what I did nothing changed, at all. After close to 8hrs of straight trouble shooting I have made zero progress. Zero.
If you have a bunch of free time and want a project then feel free to play with this device. However if you're short on time or have work to get done just take it back to the store and get a different device.
Here's the over view of my situation :
- Ubuntu 8.04 : Device is detected. DHCP = Doesn't connect to router / get IP. Router can see device. Router has no security / password enabled. After several hours of trouble shooting Ubuntu I booted into win2k (supported by device)
- Win2k : Device is detected, official software installed. DHCP = Doesn't connect to router / get IP.
It does the exact same thing in Win2k as it does in Ubuntu. - Ubuntu 9.10 : Did a fresh install if 9.10 just to trouble shoot this problem. Symptoms are exactly the same. DHCP doesn't get an ip. There are no errors in /var/log/messages
- Ubuntu 9.10 : Blacklisted the regular drivers and did the ndiswrapper method, smooth sailing. After all is said and done it does the exact same thing. DHCP doesn't get an ip.
In all the trouble shooting I did (iwconfig, ifconfig, etc) I never received any error messages telling me that something had went wrong (besides the part where dhcp didnt get an ip).

I am looking for a powerful (500mw+) wifi USB adapter for my netbook, and after spending quite a bit of time on Amazon, Newegg and Google I couldn't find anything that would work properly on Fedora without compiling the drivers and stuff. Some are reported to work on Debian distros, but couldn't find any reliable reports of them working on Fedora.

Ok, i bought this usb wifi adapter: [URL]
used these drivers(dident work at all without it, no lights even): [URL]
and i first tryed it out on my netbook (aao, intel atom ubuntu 10.04 32bit), i ran make, then make install, done! i pugged it in and im happly using a 300mbps wifi network.
then i try it on my desktop (custom, AMD phenom x4, ubuntu 10.04 64bit), i install, no errors, then when i plug in the wifi usb, it lights up, then stops, the mouse also stops working(bouth keyboard and mouse is usb) but the kb still works. aftor restarting keeping it pluged in, ubuntu never finishes the splash screen, just stops their, i try again without the wifi and it works, i keeped trying and now the whole comp frezes, even the kb, and i see the system monetor is also frozen, what do i do?
one last thing, it works on bouth my netbook and desktop under windows 7, only on my desktop it wont work on ubuntu.

When i run the KDE 4.6.1 netbook plasma desktop, there's a icon in the right upper corner telling how many applications i've running. When I click it, the desktop zooms out and shows me the applications in a graphical way, wich is pretty nice....but...then i can not select an application to switch to and have to wait a certain time out to go back to the running program i had in the foreground allready.
When i change the settings of this icon to show it always in a menu, it does work allright (but is less nice)..

I've borrowed a netbook from my girlfriend and she's let me put ubuntu on it so I can do some computing work, I installed 11.04 on it but it was a little slow so I tried 10.04. It looks great, I like it a lot, however it seems to be running a little choppy. The computer switches on and loads up in under a minute, and applications open up in a few seconds, however scrolling (particularly in browsers) is very glitchy looking, as is minimising and opening windows, nothing seems to be running smoothly.
A little info for you: using an ASUS eePC 1101HA, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Netbook Edition (However I prefer GNOME and removed the netbook launcher), I'm a Mac user but I use the Terminal a lot so I'm fairly confident with basic commands.

My laptop has an internal wireless device and a button to turn it on/off, but since it has bad reception I use an external USB wireless adapter. The problem is that if I turn the internal wireless device off using the button, it also turns the USB wireless adapter off.Is there anyway to use the killswitch (the button) only for the internal wireless device? This only started to happen in Ubuntu 10.04.

I have an old PowerBook G4 that I would like to use as a 'dummy' computer for learning wireless penetration (WEP/WPA attacks) more effectively. I had been using a wireless router, but I gave it away I can use Mac OS X to share an ethernet connection over wifi, but this is _very_ un-configurable. You get two options only, WEP and a key-length. So, I would like to install someway to make this wireless connection more configurable.
