I'm booting my server from a USB stick. It's working fine, but the root of my file system when booted only has about 100MB left. The USB stick itself has a little over 1GB free. How can I make / take up more space on the stick?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install CentOS 5.2, and the installation ran out of disk space after running for about 2 hours.I checked the FAQ, and it said 1.2 GB. The disk is 3 GB. The default install was selected, and I think that it checks for sufficient available disk space before installing. Still, it ran for quite a while before announcing that it was out of disk space.The Installation Guide is not very helpful, since there is a blank page where the disk space requirement is supposed to be. I just picked the default installation. A search of the forums on "not enough disk space" did not return much.

I've just received my new Samsung N250 Plus Netbook which comes with Windows 7 Starter (yuk). I read a post on Ebuyer from someone who has installed ubuntu on his N250 so thought I'd give it a go tonight.
My main concern is whether my wi-fi card (Broadcom 802.11n according to windows) will work when I remove windows and install ubuntu. I intend to use the netbook for internet use only while working abroad.
Is it possible to test it works by running ubuntu from my USB stick first (without removing windows 7)?
I am completely new to OpenSuse and just installed it. However, I wanted things encrypted for work and chose LVM2 with password encryption upon installation.However, I didn't change any of the values.Now I see that my home partition is only about 30 Go and I cannot mount the oter 300GB that sit on another partition. Im getting warning messages saying that I only have about 75 MB left on linux. Windows has lots of space available (especially the "d" partition which I use for storing stuff in like music and video) but I do not know how to "claim" that partition for for Suse.

The problem is im running out of disc space. Any ideas on how i can add more space. I have gparted but i dont know where to move the free space to because wubi installed it.

I am trying to clean install from a USB stick onto an Acer Aspire One ZG5.
Here are the steps I have followed:
- Downloaded ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso from [url]
- Downloaded Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.5.3.exe from [url]and run it
- Selected 11.04 in USB Installer, pointed to ISO, left persistence at 0MB and run it on a freshly FAT32 formatted USB stick
When the Aspire One boots from the USB stick, it displays "SYSLINUX 4.04 EDD 2011-04-18 Copyright (C) 1994-2011 H. Peter Anvin et al", followed by a flashing cursor on the next line.
1) I cannot type anything (read on some forums that typing "help" should work, but I cannot)
2) MD5 check of ISO is correct
3) I have also tried using unetbootin-win-549.exe to create the bootable stick, but the result is the same (although slightly older version of SYSLINUX)
I've got a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop (4 years old, I think.) Running Windows xp 32 bit. I'm trying to dual boot it with ubuntu. I've installed ubuntu on a couple of other computer just fine. This laptop though, has decided it hates linux and I can't get ubuntu to install. I get to the first screen and can boot into ubuntu as a live cd just fine but if I try to install it the screen goes black, a ton of text appears, and then nothing else will happen.
So I tried using a usb stick to install. Same issue. Then I tried downloading mint and could not get past the first screen either. I tried debian, and my computer didn't even boot into the installer, it just booted into Windows..
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 from USB stick. I used System>Admin>USB Start up Disk Creator and a 9.10 .ISO version to create the bootable USB stick.
When I plug my USB key into my computer, my computer doesn't boot from it. I tried on several other computers and none of them boot from my USB key. The bios settings on all my computers boot from removable media first.
I repeated the above steps with a different USB key and I still can't boot from the USB key. When I browse the USB key directories, I can see all the necessary files to install ubuntu.
Last year, I didn't have trouble installing ubuntu 9.04 from USB key. Not sure what I'm doing wrong this time.
Can anyone tell me how to trouble shoot this problem?
If its possible to install Windows XP using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, i want to install it to my second Partition cause i need it to play games.

I created the image using the Ubuntu startup disk creator and also downloaded the image from the ubuntu website (ive already read about the faults with using some torrents). I know the USB stick works and is bootable as ive installed Natty onto a Acer aspire netbook using it. how i could get the USB to mount so i am able to install Natty.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 x64 Server onto a Shuttle XS35GT. The PC has no CD-ROM drive so I have to install via USB.
1. Copy the files to a USB-stick via UNetbootin (WinXP, OSX) or Universal-USB-Installer.exe (WinXP)
2. Boot to the USB-stick in order to install Ubuntu
3. The installer halts at "[!!] Detect and mount CD-ROM" - "Your installation CD-ROM couldn't be mounted. Try again to mount the CD-ROM? (Yes/No)"
4. Selecting either option does not help further the install
What I tried:
- Manually fix truncated filenames in /pool/l/linux/*.udeb (see [URL])
- Alt+F2, mount the .iso as a virtual CD-ROM under /media/iso (no use since the 11.04 installer does not allow manual chosing of the CD-ROM) (see [URL])
- Expert mode install (does not show anything special) (as suggested at [URL])
I had this exact same problem with 10.10 but someone was able to lend me a USB-CD-Drive that time.
I own an eee pc 900a and would like to install [url] to it.
The eee pc hasn't got an CDROM drive so I have to convert the iso file to an img file to get it on an usb stick for installation.
This page describes how to do that with [url] with Windows, Mac or Ubuntu using usb-creato. But I have non of these available.
How can I convert the iso to an USB image with the help of debian ?
I have a 32 GB USB stick which I would like to install the full Fedora 11 system to (i.e. the DVD). Is this possible? If yes, how? It seems like the only way to do this is by using the Live CD (which does not contain the software I need).
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to compile and install new kernel 2.6.32.14 in my ubuntu karmic. After compiling source and executing the deb package for the kernel, I tried to run update-initramfs but got "No space on device" error. My /boot partition size is 100 MB and is currently having 37MB free. After I run the update-initramfs command I noticed that space in /boot got depleted and soon came to naught which led to no space error thrown by gzip. I believe the resultant gzipped archive is no more than 20MB...then why is the whole 37MB is being used up? Please correct me If I'm wrong here otherwise I might be left with no choice but to increase the size of /boot partition. Is there anyway I can make update-initramfs to use the temporary space from other drives(may be /tmp) when creating gzipped archive?

Navigating the OS menus is fast and programs are generally fast once they're running, but they're extremely slow when first opened (basic programs like Firefox, OpenOffice Writer, etc.). Is this because I'm running Ubuntu off of a USB stick? I don't know if I'd make the full switch if programs typically open this slow, but otherwise I love Ubuntu.

I have tried to install F13 on an 8 GB USB memory stick (flash drive, thumb drive) but have had limited success. I used the Live USB Creator method as suggested in the Fedora web site and although I ended up with a bootable USB memory stick, I was unable to save any changes even though I allowed a 2GB persistent overlay.
I then tried to do it using Unetbootin and again got a bootable memory stick but again was unable to save any changes. Could someone explain what I might be doing wrong or is it just not possible to make a bootable memory stick with F12 that will save any changes?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a 16gb flash drive with system rescue cd installed, I boot to it and run partimage. I'm trying to image an NTFS HDD. I would like to save it to the empty space on the flash drive but I'm unable to locate it in the file manager.
It's not under /dev/sdb1 or /livemnt/boot. The entire flash drive has been partitioned to be used by sysrescueCD.
I recently purchased HP Proliant Microserver with the idea of having it as a home server running Amahi. I added one 2TB hard disk to the already installed 250 GB drive. The Microserver has no cd/dvd drive so I created a bootable pen drive using LiveUSB Creator tool from Fedora 14 installation DVD iso image. However, I ran into problems in the very first phase though I struggled hard, juggling i386, x64, Live images...
Now, for i386 Fedora: The machine successfully boots from the pen drive but after selecting language and keyboard, the installer does not see the installation image - or even the pen drive at all - saying "No driver found". Then, I can only open "Select Device Driver to Load" (screenshot) where I can only see whole bunch of drivers I have no idea which of to select. I tried "USB mass storage driver for Linux", nothing happened, I'm returned back to "No driver found". Haven't found the "HP NC107i PCI-Express Gigabit Ethernet Server Adapter" driver in the list...
x64 Fedora: Same result, though x64 at least recognizes the HDDs that are already in the box (screenshot) so I can try to use image files unpacked on the second one (ext4 formatted). Then, the installation proceeds till the point of formatting the installation drive when it suddenly "Cannot find ISO 9660 image" (screenshot) and I cannot but Exit.
Live x64 image: I tried the Live bootable image from the same pen drive - it booted and installed correctly and at the first glance the system was working fine, connecting to the internet, downloading updates etc. However, this is not my option because I didn't have the option to add additional Repository during the installation from Live image (as it is in this guide, search the page for "Add the Amahi repository"). why the installation is not working in my setup?
i need to install openSUSE 11.2 from an USB stick. I followed this article SuSE install from USB drive - openSUSE using the openSUSE-11.2-NET-i586.iso. Unfortunately the kernel provided in this image doesn't load on my target as it needs a few extra modules for its chipset.
Thus i copied our custom kernel (which is verified to run on the target) and its initrd to the usb stick and i also created a new entry in the syslinux.config. The kernel loads, but then it can't find the root device.Does anybody know, how i need to configure the initrd to make the USB stick the root device?
I have been using Mepis on a dual boot computer for over a year. I want to give ubuntu a try so I made a bootable usb stick from ubuntu's live cd. Everything works as advertised even saved files and changes. I can't connect to the internet. I am connected via a 2wire modem to a linksys router thats connected to my computer through a ethernet cable. the router is for connecting my son's computer. Anyway I have no problems connecting from windows or Mepis. Whats strange is I can even connect when booting directly off the Ubuntu live CD.
When I try connect when booting from my usb stick I get a can not connect error. I am using the auto eth0 function and everything appears fine. I compared my settings from when booted from the Ubuntu live CD and they are Identical. I used network tools and I can ping my IP address but when trying to ping a web address I get the can not connect error. I am beginning to think ubuntu has my USB stick confused with a CD but not sure how to correct it. Here's some additional INFO:

I want to get a running Squeeze onto a bootable USB-stick to test it, to make desirable adaptions and adoptions and only when I feel, that everything is okay, install that over my existing Deb-installation.
The DVD however offers only an "install" over an existing Linux-system, destroying that. Really hours and hours of Google aso. brought no solution to a - in my opinion - simple task.
I want to transfer the content of the DVD onto the USB-stick, make that stick bootable and THEN enable me to act like the system on the stick were my real OS, including of course making changes to the configurations. Only when I'm satisfied with the result, I then want to overwrite my existing system.

The Eee can use an external optical drive as well but that failed also. I'm sure I need to do more to prepare the USB drive or CD? Can I prepare the USB Drive or CD on my Windows system, and make it boot on the netbook (which has another Linux distro on it now)?
