May 2, 2011I am trying to run open a GUI program on a remote Ubuntu machine using ssh.
I want to open, lets say firefox or skype, on a machine I have connected to via ssh.
But when writing logging in with user2 and writing sudo -u user1 firefox I get an error message saying no display specified.
The machine is turned on and logged in with user1, it just appears that i cant get ubuntu to recognize that there is a GUI available.

May 15, 2011I've assembled a new computer to replace a dead Xp/Debian dual boot machine. I have been persuaded to go for Ubuntu as a Linux-only box, running Win7 as a virtual machine. I had some help setting it up with two discs in a Raid1 array, and it works pretty well. One of those discs is, I notice, set up as bootable.
But.... it is causing a major headache in respect of USB when emulating windows. I cannot use devices such as my USB printer at present, and I have an urgent task which requires printing capability and Windows. I have spent time trying to sort the USB problem without success and have decided to take an alternative route for the present.
I have purchased two extra discs which are not included in the Raid array, with the intention of using one of them for a Win7 installation, making the machine dual-boot for now. Eventually the intention is to revert to Linux only with a 4-disc Raid.
And don't know how to proceed. I formatted one of the new discs to NTFS using Ubuntu's Disc Utility, and tried to install Win7 on that disc. I get a warning that Windows cannot find a suitable disc on which to install. I've tried with XP as well, and this copies all its files before proudly announcing that there is no suitable disc space on this machine. Two new 1Tb discs and no space!

I don't want to spend money on buying a new PATA IDE HDD for it, so I was wondering if I can use a PXE boot server on my notebook (using a virtual machine with Linux) and boot a Linux on the old machine with PXE without using Hard Disk. Aug 23, 2011I'm running a 64bit Version of Windows 7. I'm also dual-booting 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 (if it matters). However, for this I'm trying to get this working on the Windows 7 side of things. I downloaded the BackTrack 5 32bit GNOME .iso file (BT5-GNOME-32.iso) to my USB stick fine and made a VM on VMware Player. I set the OS as "Other Linux 2.6.x kernel" (if it matters). However, when I go to play my VM I get the following screen. I know I'm supposed to type Startx to launch the GUI. However, nothing happens; it's completely unresponsive (and yes keyboard focus is routed to the VM). There is no response, the cursor doesn't even blink.

Apr 18, 2011I have, say, 10 machines, connected via NFS and NIS. There's a server which exports the /home using NFS, and exports the user names using NIS. All machines are working fine. I am able to ssh to the machines remotely and get my work done.Recently though, one of the machines (say M, for easy reference) would not allow any other machine on the NFS network [or outside the NFS network] to ssh into it. Every time an ssh attempt is made, 3 IP addresses [including the machine from which an ssh attempt was being made] are added to the /etc/hosts.deny file on M, and the error message on the other machine shows 'permission denied' after the password is entered. I tried using various options that ssh provides, but I cannot figure it out. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling openssh-client and openssh-server on M, but it didn't change anything.
Another point to note is this: another user made use of M before, for a while, by disabling ssh passwords - so he could access M without having to enter his ssh password. That individual can still log in to M. All others who require to enter a password cannot ssh into M.

With high probability host 10.128.128.1 is a firewall or some router with packet filtering mechanism; but I don't understand how it can be possible to implement this kind of solution, with what kind of software or hardware? I also tried a nmap scan to my Windows machine but it returns me scan results from another host(the firewall or the router I suppose):

Server :: Host Machine Giving Lag Jerks To Clients Connected
May 25, 2011I have a VPS from Providerservice and I am their customer for over a year now. They've been great throughout the year. They had awesome support and awesome Network quality. I Host GameServers and since the last month, my Servers have been giving big lag jerks to all the clients connected. Like one big lag jerk every 5 minutes. When such a thing happens, the first thing I usually check is the Network. From 10 different machines, I did MTR traceroutes and there was not even a single packet that was lost so I was sure that the Network is not causing it. I observed my CPU usage, RAM usage, HDD usage and everything was normal but GameServers still lagged. Now today, I reloaded a complete new Debian OS and copied the Game Server files exactly from my other machines.
There was no extra program or software installed on the server, but that didn't help remove the Lag. So now I'm sure its not my VPS that causes it. Such a thing happened with me before. No Network packets were being lost and my VPS showed CPU/Ram/HDD to be normal. I asked my Provider and they said one of our user is spiking the CPU with a large number of SQL queries and that's why your lagging. But I talked to this company, they've checked their Host machine and they see nothing wrong with it. According to them, everything is normal at the Host machine. So we are short of ideas on what to do and that's why I'm here to take some expert opinions, the following things are for sure :
-> My Game Server files are exactly as I run on other machines without Lag and even on the current machine 1 month ago without Lag.
-> The VPS itself is not causing the Lag.
-> I've checked Network and no packets are loss, not sure about any difference between ICMP or UDP packets since the game is UDP.
The most probable thing is the Host machine itself. This usually happens when the Game Server falls out of resources and gets stuck.

Dec 8, 2009I have a program that attaches to an interface. I can run two copies of the program on two systems (each running one instance), connect it to a switch, say 1.1.1.1 & 1.1.2.1. In this configuration two instances of the program can communicate and everything is fine.
Now, to reduce cost, it want to use only one system with two nics connected to the same switch, running two instances of the above program, each instance attached to two interfaces respectively on the system. I have the following settings:
