Mar 18, 2010I have a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop running Ubuntu 8.04LTS. It has a Conexant HSF modem/chipset, for which I bought the Linuxant HSF modem driver- 56K max.It is installed and it "functions",ie: it will connect to my ISP and I can start to browse (Firefox), but it will inevitably disconnect itself. At this point it is always down to "turtle speed of 4800bps".I have consulted with Linuxant Support and they suggested different modem init. strings - mainly different modulations - V34,V90,V92 w/variations. Nothing has made any signif. diff. They won't offer any further help.My question is: Could it be that Ubuntu 8.04 specifically, or Ubuntu of any version, is the source of the problem??
I have Knoppix 5.1.1 Live CD which loads up fine, and I was hoping to try the HSF driver with it, but I need to get Kernel Source pkg. and that will take 2+ hrs. to download by dialup , so haven't tried it yet.

Jan 3, 2010I need to find a driver for a Sprint 3G/4G modem. I am running 9.04.
Sprint lists this as a U300 but the actual part is a Franklin Wireless FW300DOWMX.
lsusb shows this as ID 16d8:6002 CMOTECH Co., Ltd. and ID 0409:005a NEC Corp. HighSpeed Hub
so my box can see the part.
If I can get just the 3G working that would help a lot. I would be happy to do beta, even alpha, testing.

Nov 9, 2010I'm a Linux noob an I am really desperate for some top, top, top assistance. Been battling a while now with my iBurst USB modem driver and hope there is someone out there that can help? I have been through umpteen forums and threads and tried literally everything I read, but to no avail. I also realize there aren't many Ubuntu users that use the iBurst modem, but I am appealing to the few out there that do.
I have installed the open source ibriver-2.6.31 for my iBurst USB modem. Initially all went well with fast connection etc., connection everytime I boot, until... I started updates of 10.04 LTS, that is when I became aware, from the forums, that a re-install of the driver is required after every package update due to no "package management" in the iBdriver. what a pain in the proverbial to say the least!
Anyways.. now I am the stage where the driver is always installed, but...all of a sudden, I need to run pppoeconf and set up the driver after each boot to get connected!!!! If I can't find a solution it will force me back to Windoze7 which I dread to do! Can a script be written to pppoeconf (rp-pppoeconf.iso is loaded I think) automatically during boot perhaps?
So any top Linux hacker or "notsonoobasIam" user out there with a iBurst modem and similar pains & mis-fortunate experience please share your ideas and thoughts to correct this problem permanently for me please? (I should maybe mention that the other day I performed the "Grub2 Profile" exercise to try and speed up the boot time, this does not perhaps have something to do with the fact that I need to reconfigure in pppoeconf after every boot does it? I doubt it)

Oct 1, 2010I just upgraded the kernel on my Ubuntu laptop from 2.6.32-24-generic to 2.6.32-25-generic (using the update manager under gnome). After the update, the wireless network controller shows up as UNCLAIMED when I do lshw -C network.When I try to install the driver with the commands sudo modprobe lib80211 sudo insmod wl.ko
i get this error message: insmod: error inserting 'wl.ko': -1 Invalid module format
I have compiled the driver using the 2.6.32-24 kernel. Do I have to re-compile with the new kernel?I'm a unix user, but not a kernel hacker, so I'm wondering if I will run into problems every time I get a kernel update? Or is this problem an exception?

Jul 8, 2011I am running Ubuntu 11.04 with a Dlink DGE-530T NIC. My browsing in Ubuntu on ALL browsers is horribly slow. It works perfectly fine on windows and other PCs on the LAN. So I know for sure my router and my internet line is fine.I figured it could be a problem with my NIC drivers and decided to install the drivers from the CD. (All this while it was running on the default drivers that ship with Ubuntu). I'm trying to install the sk98lin drivers and my understanding of the kernel so far is still very weak. When I try to run the install.sh script it gives me an error saying :

Jan 5, 2010i have ALFA AWUS036H 500mw wireless card which uses RTL8187L chipset. Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 come with preloaded rtl8187 driver but they DO NOT work for internet surfing. However they do work with aircrack suit for injecting etc. Specific problem is: They only work with really close ranged AP, anything far and you will have random disconnects or inability to connect. So basically its unstable compared to patched driver.
To get this alfa card working for internet access, the only way currently is to use any LInux distro with Kernel 2.6.30 and lower. Starting from Kernel 2.6.31 they have made some changes to net api structure which wont let you patch the driver with the patch available at aircrack website which is normally used to make this driver suitable for internet browsing. I am currently using backtrack 4 pre final but i was going to install kubuntu 9.04 till i recieved an email from realtek with a new driver that compiles in kernel 2.6.31. I tested it on Kubuntu 9.10 and it compiled fine but i could not make it run. Under NetworkManagement for Kubutnu, the problem is that it keeps asking for WEP key and gives me the message 'wlan4 failed to connect' instantly after i enter the key, so its possible that its not compatible with NetworkManagement. I havent tried it with wicd yet, it may work........

A little time spent perusing the web told me that the same driver had problems in Fedora 12 and Fedora 13 as well. Nov 24, 2010With the recent upgrade kernel, my ATI driver can no longer work. After upgrading to the new kernel, upon reboot I would get stuck at the "checking battery status" and can't boot into kubuntu.
I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 64 on intel i5 with radeon hd 4870.
So I thought I messed something up since I was fooling around with conky script the day before. I did a clean install of kubuntu 10.10 64 and reset all my settings and my files. At this point, everything works smoothly and I can reboot multiple times without a problem.
I proceeded to install the Radeon catalyst driver following the documentation, which worked perfectly for me on the previous kernel. After rebooting, I can no longer get pass the "checking battery state" black screen. I had to boot into safe book, uninstall all fglrx and also delete xorg.conf to be able to boot back in normally.

Aug 31, 2010I write the network driver. Transmission of packets in user space I do through netlink socket`s. In user space there is a handling of packets and their transmission on other device (however, it isn't important).
Problem in that any time, packets through the driver in system, and is reverse, are transferred normally. But then there comes the moment when the kernel crash. If to look in syslog it seems to me that comes deadlock. Also I think that it is related with netlink socket`s.
I can't find the information on that anywhere how correctly to use netlink socket`s in kernel space. Can at you will any a reason into the account of synchronization of sockets and the driver in kernel space?
I can give the driver code if it is necessary.
Ubuntu :: Edimax 7781Un Wireless USB Modem Driver Compilation
Mar 31, 2011I recently bought the Edimax 7781Un wireless modem specifically because it works with Linux. The OS does recognise the device and tries to connect to the router, however it connects and has the two semi-circles going round then it eventually disconnects. I thought it was my wireless device with little signal strength therefore I bought this one. However this one connected once for 20 seconds, 89% strength and disconnects. I booted up win7 and it works fine, so I have put it down to the driver or the OS.
Trying to compile the driver, I am up to the make step after following instruction here. I type make, it does a few things and errors a fair few things, the last line ending in [make] *** [LINUX] Error 2
Another possibility (I think) for this connection problem could be my AMP installation, however I have neither apache, php or mysql running and I still have the problem.I read somewhere that make requires more files, is this true? And if it is, where can I get it without an internet connection on my linuxbox? (I am currently using my brothers w7 computer).

It also install Virtual Serial Port.In terminal window if i command "lsusb" then it show a device connected which name is "Cygnal". It also shows its vendor & product id.
