Ubuntu Networking :: Kernel Update Broke The Network Driver

I managed to get my Linksys AE1000 USB wireless adapter to work on Unbuntu 10.04 LTS.but recently I updated the kernel to 2.6.32-26 and when i rebooted I logged on to see my wireless connection was not working.even worse, I can't fn the links i had that showed me how to install it in the first place, its about the fact that the new kernel uses a different usb setup(probably incorrect, let me know it its incorrect). its an issue that the hacked driver isnt compatible with the new kernel release, how can i revert to the older version that it did work on? i'm using a RALinkTech driver [URL]
i upgraded my kernel to the latest version that being linux-image-2.6.31-19 and now when i start my linux box i get the grub shell. this problem happend once before but i only had to run the command: sudo update-grub2 and everything turned back normal. now even though i run the command everytime i restart my linux i get the grub shell.
Firstly my gdesklets have gone, and if I try to run gdesklets then I get a blank window in the top left corner, followed by another blank window in the centre which disappears, then the first one fades to gray.
Secondly, clicking the 'running man' to exit just closes both gnome panels.
Ubuntu 8.04 (2.6.24-25)I know 8.04 is pretty old now, and I should probably start over, but it was all fine until this latest update.
Posting from my Windows 7 system. Once again an Ubuntu kernel update has broken X. Once again I cannot get into Grub2, despite putting in the hacks to lengthen the time it listens. I don't need instructions on how to fix it from Live CD. I'm going to try Gentoo or something, anything, different. I need a Linux distro that can survive regular updates and boot to desktop reliably.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and ran the normal weekly updates last night. There were kernal updates listed but they have run alright before so I went ahead and let everything update.
On restart my Nvidia drivers would not load, so I restarted in low graphics mode. I uninstalled the Nvidia driver (with the intent of reinstalling them) but decided to restart before I reinstalled the driver (windows habit). upon restart I was told (in a very small box) that Ubuntu was running in low graphics mode.
I clicked ok and it proceeded to load, but it loaded it in regular mode and only the right half of the desktop is visible! It is like it is cut totally in half! And I can't get to the important side with Admin and Preferences. I tried boot options but that just gets me a very small colored box. There are no options when it boots just 3/4 of a box that says it is running in low graphics mode because "unable to load module "fglrx" module does not exist". I can not try and reinstall the Nvidia drivers because I can't see the part of the desktop that has Admin on it. I have used Ubuntu for several years now but have not used the terminal very often.
Latest kernel update on 10.04 desktop broke my bluetooth. The icon in the tray has now faded and pushing 'turn bluetooth on' does absolutely nothing. I'm on a Lenovo S10-2 laptop, everything was working perfectly before today's update.
I just updated my kernel from 2.6.32-21 to 2.6.32-22 today. Now I am getting no sound. I have checked my mixer levels with both kmix and alsamixer. Nothing appears to be amiss. I tried rebooting with the old kernel and still no sound.
I installed the latest security update for squeeze. It entailed an update of the kernel. Now when it boots, it give continuous kernel error messages about "can't enumerate usb .... " I have a custom kernel compiled from source (not sure about the patch level) from the same kernel 2.6.32. It seems to work OK. Should I worry about the security of this custom kernel or should I try to recompile it? I don't really know how to do any patching of the kernel source.
I just upgraded the kernel on my Ubuntu laptop from 2.6.32-24-generic to 2.6.32-25-generic (using the update manager under gnome). After the update, the wireless network controller shows up as UNCLAIMED when I do lshw -C network.When I try to install the driver with the commands sudo modprobe lib80211 sudo insmod wl.ko
i get this error message: insmod: error inserting 'wl.ko': -1 Invalid module format
I have compiled the driver using the 2.6.32-24 kernel. Do I have to re-compile with the new kernel?I'm a unix user, but not a kernel hacker, so I'm wondering if I will run into problems every time I get a kernel update? Or is this problem an exception?
Writing this from a 9.10 LiveCD, so I know that my hardware is working fine.My system is running 10.10 normally. Last night, the update manager popped up, as it frequently does, and said I had some packages that could be updated. So I let it update after which it said I needed to reboot. After a recient update to the freenx libraries KDE on Kubuntu 10.04 stopped working but other desktops like gnome kept running. The problem wasn't in the normal log files, but it was found in the .xsession-errors file in the user directory on the server. After the update NX is trying to start kde with the /usr/bin/startkde4 command which doesn't exist. Instead make a link from /usr/bin/startkde to the non existent /usr/bin/startkde4 and it will work again. To do this use the command:
The update that broke things contained some 400 packages.The problem is NOT hardware related. There are 2 other linux installs on the laptop that work the way they should.This is all related to using a wired network connection.The update removed the package network-config and did not replace it. Not sure that is the problem because that package is related to the gui and I can not get an ip in cli.
I am stuck at cli because the new kernel broke nvidia (pretty normal). There was also a new xserver, which tends to break nvidia, and as I recall a new kde. Anyway I am unable to rebuild the nvidia driver because I can not establish a network connection to my network to get the packages needed to fix it.
I just performed the newest kernel update to version 184.108.40.206-0.7 (desktop). Unfortunately, there is no update for the compat-wireless package available. It's still the version for kernel 220.127.116.11-0.5. Hence, my wireless is currently not working and I had to pull a cable through my apartment to write these lines. I actually thought due to the change of the very last digit in the kernel version that this should be a rather safe update. But I also had to recompile the modules of the NVidia driver and of Virtualbox. Does anyone has an idea when new compat-wireless modules will be available? Or do I have to re-compile them myself (I never had to do that before and I really hope that I don't have to)? Or is there a trick to make the old modules work?
I have a huawei e230 modem that used to work pretty good until this week. It has always been much slower on linux than windows but I am not complaining because windows keep disconnecting ever hour or so, while linux can stay connected over night without problem. The modem is still recognized but when I try to connect it suddenly disappears.
So, after doing a 'yum update', I minimized the terminal and completely forgot about it - so I accidentally went ahead and suspended my laptop before it had finished. I resumed my laptop and noticed that yum hadn't finished 'cleaning up' the packages. Nevertheless, yum continued and the process finished. After an hour or so use of the internet (wirelessly), all of a sudden the wireless network disconnected, and NetworkManager crashed. I rebooted my computer only to find that NetworkManager now says that my 'firmware is missing' for my wireless card.
I just updated an Ubuntu 10.04 kernel to 2.6.32-27-generic, and a wifi driver (r8187) is not present there. Is the only solution reinstalling it or is there a simple way to move it from an older kernel I have on the same machine?
I have checked the known issues and the sticky post, it does not seem to be related. I have Ubuntu as my host OS and I want to run Windows as a guest.

i ran yum update which updated kernel to 18.104.22.168.174.fc12.i686.PAE. Now after logging in i get a blank white screen. With previous kernel updates i have had no such problem. Anyway, the boot messages are following:

I have an HP laptop running 11.3/KDE4.5.2, has integrated HD3200 ati graphics.
Yesterday, ATI version 10.10 fglrx driver was installed on the system, kernel was 126.96.36.199-0.4-desktop. I use the "build rpm" option with the downloads from ATI. All seemed running well.
I had installed the automatic recompile script posted by please_try_again after moving to 188.8.131.52-04, so today's new 184.108.40.206-0.5-desktop update was a chance to see it in action.
After the update and reboot, the X server restarted so I have to assume the automatic recompile script ran, although I did not see any messaging (place to look?).
However, some things did not seem "quite right". fgl_glxgears ran, but seemed slow (only 70 or so fps) pm-suspend failed to sleep the machine, I see the error message "s2ram_do: Device or resource busy" in /var/log/pm-suspend.log, which I think (?) is fglrx related but not sure why I think that. I moved to a root terminal, init 3, removed the fglrx rpm with yast, deleted the fglrx rpm and rebuilt a new one with ati....run. I then installed the new rpm (with yast), ran aticonfig --initial, then rebooted.
Basically, I am at the same level as above, fglrx installed and running, but slow and pm-suspend still not working.
So now I wonder if there is a new problem with the -5 kernel update, something like the excitement a couple weeks back when we had to patch the driver (or the kernel symbols) just to get a compile.
Can i assume someone has been able to cleanly update to 220.127.116.11-0.5 and get their fglrx running again?
An observation, which may or may not be related to my issues. The fglrx rpm installs a new /usr/lib64/dri/fglrx_dri.so, but in reviewing the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log, it never appears to load. Two other *dri*.so modules do load. There is no "dri" section in Xorg.conf; I seem to recall there being one a while back, but much seems to be changing there.
I'm running Fedora 13 x64 and updated the kernel to the latest version (18.104.22.168-56 to 22.214.171.124-61). I use the proprietary nvidia drivers (currently 260.19.12) so I had to compile the kernel module against the new kernel sources and reinstall the driver. The process was apparently successful, but when I try to start X nothing happens, it's as if the computer had been suspended, my monitor acts like it isn't receiving any input. I have full runlevel 3 access, and the system seems pretty much fine up to that point. Nvidia's own sanity tests which are built into the installer reported no problems with my driver.
Here's what to do right after applying the latest kernel security patch (126.96.36.199-0.4) to get the ATI driver back to work. Do not reboot yet make sure the update installed the headers and sources for kernel 188.8.131.52-0.4: rpm -qa | grep 184.108.40.206-0.4 should print the files in red on a 64bit system:
I compiled the 220.127.116.11 kernel and <insert drumroll> it boots!(my first kernel roll, I'm kind of shocked actually) That's the good news. The bad news is that my NVIDIA drivers are gone in the wind. That's not entirely true as I can still boot into the old kernel and startx. Is there a way to download the driver using the command line for reinstall?

I install fedora on my usb-hdd. Sometimes i boot it from real machine, sometimes i boot from virtual machine (kvm). When I boot from real machine, hdd driver is usb-storage, when i boot from virtual machine hdd drivers are ata_generic and pata_acpi.
Everytime i update kernel, mkinitrd only create initrd image contains only hdd driver current running, and I must recreate initrd manual with all preload hdd driver. How to config fedora to everytime update kernel, mkinitrd can make initrd image with all hdd driver I need?
Today when I logged into my fileserver it told me there were 20 updates available. I went ahead and installed them, one was a new kernel. After reboot, I cannot see that machine when I browse the network. It still has the same static IP and I can still map to the shared drives, so Samba is working. When I browse the network from Windows or my WDTV Live media play it no longer shows the server by name. The smb.conf file is still intact and I restarted Samba. Not really sure where to start troubleshooting why I can't browse to it.
I am experiencing the "slow internet" problem (mentioned multiple times in these forums) but it started exactly when I ran an online update, which switched my boot image from vmlinuz-18.104.22.168-0.1 to vmlinuz-22.214.171.124-0.2. Perhaps a setting somewhere got overridden? When the update occurred, grub couldn't find the OS because it had the wrong version #, and I manually edited it (via a livedisk) and that fixed it; it also switched my vga resolution in the grub conf. OpenSUSE is *acting* like ipv6 is enabled again, but ifconfig doesn't report that, and my MTU is close to 1500.
