OpenSUSE Network :: Can't Setup Internet Connection Wired Or Wireless
Mar 11, 2011I have just done a new install of the latest opensuse 32bit and for some reason I cannot connect to the internet, when I click on mange connections the vpn tag is highlighted and all the other tabs are grayed out and I cannot select them. So I can't setup a internet connection wired or wireless. I was just using Kubuntu and did not have this problem. My card is broadcom.

Jun 2, 2010I have BIG troubles trying to set up wired internet connection in Ubuntu! To be able to connect to the internet I have to enter my MAC address, 2 IPs, netmask and 2 DNS address. When I try to edit the default internet connection eth0 with my correct information, the minute I enter my MAC address and save the changes the network manager creates new internet connection with wrong data and use it instead! I can't select the correct internet connection from the top bar where the internet icon is, because it is just not there. The only connection that I can choice is the new default one with the wrong data! If I try to create new separate internet connection with my correct data the same thing happens! The moment I enter my MAC address and save it, the internet connection disapears from the list of internet connections in the internet area in the top bar and I can't select it. I tried googling it, but with no luck I think that if I set up my connection trough the terminal everything will be ok

May 1, 2011I am facing a problem with the management of my network card after installing Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit Desktop edition.
There are two Network Cards and one USB adapter which I'd like to drive:
- Ethernet controller Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
- Ethernet controller Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
- Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter
Actually I need the wireless adapter to connect to the AP, so both of the ethernet card should be disabled. Infact, when I try to access to the AP I must disable the eth0 card by using (sudo ifconfig eth0 down), otherwise the route assigns the default gw (192.168.1.1) to the eth0 device and the network is useless.

After much internet searching, i finally figured out how to get wireless internet. Unfortunately, in setting up wireless internet, I no longer have wired internet. The system doesn't seem to recognize my wired internet anymore. I'd like a scenario where i can connect to the internet both wired and wireless.

Sep 18, 2010I have an old Compaq Presario v2000 that recently had Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it. The wired internet worked when it was installed, but the wireless didn't. I tried to download the drivers for it and it failed everytime. I did an update thinking that the update might fix the wireless, but it didn't, it actually made my wired connection stop working. So now I have a newly installed OS on the laptop, and I can't do anything on it because there is no way to get any internet.

When I try to plug in the wired connection, it loads for about a minute then tells me I'm disconnect. The option for the wired connection is there, but when I try to click it, the same thing happens. What do I do?

Jun 8, 2010I have never seen this before but to connect to the internet either wired or wireless I have to connect to a broadband connection as well. I am currently using wireless; I connect to ISP with wireless but in order to access the internet I have connect to the wireless connection through my broadband connection(This is where I enter a user name and password.). I'm not sure why this is, I have always just plugged an Ethernet cable in and the computer just knew I guess.
I am using ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso that I had put onto a USB drive. It booted fine, but when I tried accessing the internet I couldn't. I was able to connect to the ISP, but I couldn't find any settings for a broadband connection. My computer is a Acer Aspire One Netbook 250

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Wired Internet Connection To Wireless
Aug 29, 2010For the last 3 or so hours I have been trying in vain to simply give my mobile phone wifi internet access from my netbook. I have tried to google and follow some howto's and guides, but they're either too old or don't explain it very well. I'm fairly new to use of Linux and of wireless networks, but can handle setting them up in Windows. So basically, having said that, I believe I mostly understand how this whole thing is supposed to work theoretically but I just feel as though I lack the experience to jump the wireless hurdle AND the Linux hurdle at the same time. I have provided some information below.
- Setup is based on Lucid netbook remix install with a Maverick kernel update due to lack of driver support for wireless NIC - I can confirm wireless does work properly for connection purposes
- I followed [URL] and kind of followed [URL however I couldn't even tell how to run Network Manager, even though Synaptic tells me it is installed
- When I ran into problems trying to install ipmasq I found [URL] and followed what the response told me to which allowed me to restart the dnsmasq and the dhcp3-server at least
- I have restarted the entire netbook several times throughout the process.

Dec 14, 2010today i installed ubuntu 10.10 on my hp mini 210 netbook. previously i had ubuntu netbook remix running and had no problem accessing the internet both wired and wireless; however, since installing 10.10 i have been searching for a solution for the last six hours but have been unable to get either to work.
as far as hardware is concerned i have a broadband bcm4313 802.11 network controller and am running through a linksys router which i know to be working because i have 4 other computers connected to it all with internet access. i checked ifconfig and a lo conection was listed but no eth0. i also tried downloading a broadband tar.gz driver but dont have any packages to build it and cant get any since the computer has no internet. i assume wired is easiest to setup so lets start there even though i use wireless 90% of the time. im new to linux so please dont expect me to know any terminal commands.

May 15, 2011I have a wireless network (192.168.1.0) that's bridged to the Internet and a wired one (192.168.0.0) that's only local. When I am connected to both networks, Natty wants to route my Internet traffic through the wired, local-only one.

Feb 1, 2010I just finished downloading the latest version of xubuntu on my dell insperon 1545. I went to set up the internet and i cannot figure out how. In the top right corner the connection icon has only one option that i can select, and thats configure the vpn settings i think. I installed it using dual booting next to windows 7, so i keep switching back and forth trying to look something up and go back to see if it will work. However, i think i should make the point that i've never worked with any linux type o.s. before.

Feb 10, 2010Running Ubuntu 9.10 Ive just got my wireless connection working after first having got the wired eth0 connection working.
With the wired connection I could SSH into my server through my firewall/router (via a forward). I can run up VNC, from there firefox, browse the web - all is well.
I have now setup the wireless connection, using a static IP, and I can likewise SSH into my server. I can run up VNC. I can ping my router. I can log onto it via VNC. I can browse to my router. But I cant browse the internet.
But I cant ping google.com. The reason is there is no host lookup service. Nslookup eventually says no servers could be reached.
So specifically, if I ping www.google.com Im told "unknown host". If I do an NSlookup on it I get timeout, no servers could be reached. However if I ping 66.102.11.104 I get responses.
I see no relevant entries in my firewall log.
Unfortunately I cant traceroute because the package isnt found - and of course I cant install it because I have no internet !
Strangely (to me at least !) if I then tunnel through SSH and browse the web, I have no problems. It works ? I know I am browsing through my SSH tunnel because whatsmyip gives the IP of my router at home, not where Ive SSHd in from. I can surf just fine.
why I cant do host lookups any more (and this did work with my wired connection, but whether its related to my change to wireless, or static IPs or both I cant be sure - it certainly appeared to happen at the same time). And, more to the point, what I need to look for/do to rectify it ?
As a bonus Id be interested in why I can SSH and browse via tunnelling but not direct from my server (via VNC). Just for interests sake !

Fedora :: Use Wireless For Internet And Wired For Intranet
May 23, 2010Currently I am using Ubuntu but I am having a huge problem with it right now and it may force me to abandon my linux hunger and get Win 7. I am hoping that Fedora may be different enough that it will solve my problem if I switch. I have my linux box (ubuntu 9.10) that connects to the internet through a wireless usb dongle. and it works perfectly.I have network shares that allow me to share content with my media player (modded xbox) in a different location of the house. I added a tv to my office and connected another xbox to it. This connection to my linux machine is made through a switch. This wired intranet connection works fine. I can see all of my shares.
The problem I have is when I am using the wired intranet connection and I want to surf the web. I cant. I have to disconnect the wired connection to do so. IS Fedora different enough to to allow me to be able to do so? I am a linux newbie and learning more everyday and I love it.

Oct 11, 2010I've just updated my Dell Inspiron Mini to Maverick Meerkat (10.10), and I've very quickly run into quite a few problems. First, it took an awful long time to install all of the updates. Is that normal? Perhaps it's just because I'm using a puny netbook?
When the updates were finished and I rebooted, I logged in without any problems, but then got a gray screen. I've seen that screen before, when Ubuntu loads (especially with Lucid), but it doesn't go away. I rebooted using Desktop Edition instead of Netbook Edition, and there was an improvement, but the top toolbar is blank.Additionally, and most importantly, I can't get an Internet connection of any kind, wired or wireless.

May 25, 2010I have recently installed Ubuntu lucid lynx and at my old house I had a regular cable modem (no wifi) and never used wireless internet. I would simply unplug the ethernet from the windows desktop plug it to my laptop and I was good 2 go.have recently moved and my roommate has a cable modem w/ wifi capabilities. When I plug in I am told that I am connected but......Nothing. dont know if the problem is due to the modem having wireless capabilities when my old one did not or the fact that my roommate has a win7 laptop that is connected via wifi etc. There have been a FEW times that I have walked out plugged in and everything has ran well. when I do plug in I look under connection information and I am told that I am connected at 100Mbps but whenever I try to visit a page I am out of luck. I define newbie (as far as Linux distros) and I have tried everything including going to work w/no sleep because I'm going through massive trial & errors

Jun 1, 2011I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop on my desktop in dual boot with Windows 7.
Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.

I've got three NICs in there (for a later project), and when I connect my cable modem to any one of the NICs, then little connection triangle-spinny-thing in the upper-right tries to connect. May 4, 2010I recently did a fresh install of 10.04 from 9.04 and since then I am unable to use Internet. However my ethernet connection is working fine, as I am able to login to modem and check configuration. I reinstalled twice, downloaded fresh 64-bit & 32-bit and also followed kernel update steps as in few forum posts, but no joy. The firefox is throwing an error "The connection has timed out". My internet connection is working fine as I am able to use my Windows Laptop to post this message. I checked system > administration > hardware drivers and couldn't find any unsupported hardwares.I had similar issue when upgrading to 9.10, hence stayed on 9.04. When I looked at LTS image, I couldn't resist and cleaned up 9.04.
