Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless No Longer Enabled

Feb 22, 2011

About two days ago was when I was last able to connect wirelessly. I cannot recall a change I made to the system that would have caused this problem. Items to consider:

1. Under Network Manager, I am unable to click "Wireless Networks"
2. I ran the following code under in the terminal (sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl'; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo lsmod) and proceeded to run enter BIOS where I enabled the Network Driver.

3. I am still unable to get the "Wireless Networks" to even be selectable under the Network Manager
4. When I return to BIOS, the computer shuts down immediately.
5. The start-up menu won't allow me access.
6. I have an HP G60-445DX notebook and an MCP77 Ethernet..

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom Wireless No Longer Recognizes Wireless Networks?

Jan 11, 2010

I've been running Karmic since it was officially released on my Dell Studio 17 (specs are in my signature) with a Broadcom wireless half mini wireless card.hen I installed Karmic, it gave me the option to install proprietary drivers for my video card as well as 2 Broadcom drivers, STA and one of the BC43 drivers. I installed all of these, and the only problems I had were with the audio. I spent a few days troubleshooting the audio and finally got PulseAudio set up for my card.

Almost 3 months later, I was making use of my wireless network at home, as I had done plenty of times over the previous 3 months, when I closed the lid (thus putting the computer into sleep mode) and took it to the hospital to stay with my fianc饠after her surgery. When I got to the hospital, I couldn't get their network to show up. Network Manager didn't even recognize the network. We had also brought my fianc饧s laptop (same machine with a slightly less powerful CPU and only 4 GB of RAM). She is running Windows 7, which detected the hospital's network with no problems. After trying to ad-hoc the hospital network with no success, I finally just gave up and played Sudoku and toyed with some graphics stuff in GIMP until we came home. Upon returning home, however, I was shocked that my card didn't even detect our home network.

I have been unsuccessful for the past 3 days in getting Network Manager to identify our wireless network. The wired network connects without issue and I am able to make use of a USB Belkin adapter, which identifies all 7 of the various wireless networks in my neighborhood, including our home network. While I would be able to simply carry my Belkin adapter with me in order to make use of wireless networks, I would really like to solve this problem with my Broadcom adapter. I've gone through the Ubuntu Wireless Network Troubleshooting guide, but I still can't get it to workOutput of lshw -C network:

Code:
*-network

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Networking Refuses To Be Enabled?

Nov 3, 2010

I have a compaq c784tu and it was shitty with xp. Vista is quite crap, so i turned over to ubuntu 10.4. The configuration of the laptop is: 1.73 GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor T2370 with 1-MB L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB featuring Intel Mobile 945GML Express Chipset Motherboard, 2-GB PC2-5300 DDR2 667 MHz SDRAM (Maximum 4-GB in 2 slots), a 160-GB SATA 5400 rpm Hard Disk Drive and 8x Super Multi Double Layer (8.5 GB) Slot-in DVD Writer.Everything worked like a charm and I was able to connect to the internet through a public wifi network. However, I came home this week to my mothers house, where they have a dsl-router to connect to the internet whih uses bridge mode pppoe. I tried to connect to the internet through it, and it initially couldnt. However, I got around that by doing a clean install of ubuntu. I was able to then connect to the internet using "sudo pppoeconf" and "sudo pon dsl-provider"One night the network manager app on the top left disappeared and would not come on. I figured I had fried my wifi adapter, however, lspci -v confirmed its presence.Further, "system>admn>system testing" detected the adapter aswell. I tried the iwconfig command in the terminal the result was:

lo no wireless extensions
eth0 no wireless extensions

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Not Works With Security Enabled?

Apr 8, 2010

I installed 9.04 clean yesterday to try and once again move from Windows to Linux and I thought I would give it a real try this time to learn the new OS. Well, right off the bat my wireless connection does not work. By default my WPA/WPK security was set on my router. My wireless adapter does connect to the router but there is no internet access. If I remove the WPA/WPK security and leave it open I can connect and I do have internet access but as soon as I re-enable WPA/WPK security I lose internet access. I even tried WEP security and same result. What the heck is going on with this? I am not going to leave my router unsecured but that seems to be the only way this works. I also upgraded this morning to 9.10 and same problem so this is not limited to 9.04.

At this point, I have installed the STA driver for the device, though I have also tried with B43 (fwcutter). I have also tried with ndiswrapper with windows driver. All these cases, the end effect is the same.

I can see "Wi-fi" LED light up. When I bring up the KDE control module for networks, "Wireless" is disabled. However, when I right-click on the network manager icon on the taskbar, I see "Enable Wireless" checked on.

I am wondering if in the process of installing the ndiswrapprer drivers, I am messed up something?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Is Disabled On One Laptop And Enabled On The Other With Same Kernel

Aug 23, 2010

I just want to enable my wireless network card... how do I do that? It worked perfectly in Jaunty and it also worked when Jaunty was upgraded to Karmic, but in a fresh install of Karmic it is displayed as DISABLED:

sudo lshw | grep network:
*-network:0 DISABLED

I know this is not a bug in any kernel or anything. I now have Karmic on two identical laptops (Fujitsu Siemens AMILO, rt2500pci chipset) with the same kernel (2.6.31-22-generic). Wireless is enabled on one, disabled on the other. This is wearing me out... I am on the verge of buying Windows 7...

Ubuntu Networking :: All Wireless Stops Working If Loopback Is Enabled In Router?

Jun 8, 2010

I'm running a Source Dedicated Server on my Ubuntu laptop, and to connect to it via external IP from other computers in the network I need to enable loopback in my router. This was working fine, but then I disconnected my laptop for a few days, and when I came back the wireless stopped working on my Xbox. I reset the router to factory defaults, and then setup everything again. It was all working fine until I enabled loopback again and power cycled my router. Now every time I do that, the internet on Ubuntu stops working and the wireless on the Xbox stops working.

Edit: You can ignore this I guess. It seems I was actually DISABLING loopback by enabling that router option, which I guess caused this. Strange, because the first time enabling this option was the only way to get my external ip to work. Oh well, everything is fine now.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Adobe Flash Plugin Can No Longer Be Enabled?

I'm having an issue changing the flash plug to display flash. I clean installed 10.04 a week ago, upgraded to to the closed source adobe plugin, and everything was great. However, a day ago, I had an issue with one site, and I decided to switch back to the default swfdec player. Since that time I have not been able to switch back to adobe. Every time I attempt to, firefox complains that adobe is already installed. Even if I remove the adobe flash plugin via synaptic and allow firefox to reinstall it, it still uses swfdec.

Ubuntu Networking :: Error When Compiling Orinoco-0.15rc4.tar.gz - Wireless Extensions Are Not Enabled

Dec 26, 2010

currently running karmic on an old gateway laptop with kernel 2.6.31-22-generic and, as is par for how I handle challenges, I've jumped in with both feet - which is to say this is not a dual-boot situation. I've spent some time reading the forums (and other sources of information) and am grateful for all the knowledgeable people who are willing to share what they know.

My operating system seems to be functioning properly.I can get online via ethernet, but not via wireless. I have a lucent orinoco gold PC24E-H-FC (PCMCIA) card, which the computer isn't seeing. I am trying to follow the instructions here: [URL] to install the driver. Everything is going well until I get to the sudo make line. At that point I get the following display:

make -C /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.31-22-generic M=/usr/src/orinoco-0.15rc4 KERNELRELEASE= modules
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.31-22-generic'
/usr/src/orinoco-0.15rc4/Kbuild:8: *** Wireless extensions are not enabled. Stop.

[code]....

how I can fix it so I can continue on with the instructions. (For the record - if I just continue on, I can change directory in the next line, but I cannot remove either hermes or orinoco as "no such file or directory" seems to exist.)

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Network No Longer Working On Mobile / What To Do?

Aug 19, 2010

It still works fine if I boot into "good old" Windows. I must say I am SOOO disapointed with the Network Manager in Ubuntu which was great until 10.4 and has been crap ever since. I have had so many problems with my Vodafone USB and had to find an alternative method of getting it to work. Now the last straw is that my wireless LAN card is not getting recognised on startup so I have not connectivity when at home. (USb via Vodafone is no good in my area). I am typing this via an old Windows PC because my Ubuntu just does not work anymore. I have not installed anything new so what has happened - or how can I get it to work again.
I was completely sold on Ubuntu but am now considering reverting to Windows. It would be worth paying for an operating system that actually works, even if I have all the other hassles as well. A year ago Ubuntu was great - it all worked ! Not any more how can all that good work have gone down the pan - I can't understand how anyone could let all these nertwork problems occur - it isn't just me - read the threads - it's widespread.

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom BCM4312 Dell Studio - Built In Wireless Card - 'disabled' And No Longer Works

Jun 10, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu x64 on my dell studio 1535 using the windows installer (wubi).

All seems to be working fine apart from the built in wireless card, the proprietary driver (found in hardware drivers) installs and activates successfully and works perfectly. Until I shut down or restart the system. On the next boot the wireless card is 'disabled' and no longer works.

The card I have is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g

I am going to try a proper install on a second partition rather than using wubi later on but wondered if this was a commonly occuring problem?

The wireless card works as soon as the driver installs, however I am shown a "restart to activate driver" message and after restarting it's dead.

Fedora Networking :: FC15 IPV6 Wireless Router - No Longer Gets An IPv6 Address

Aug 31, 2011

I have been struggling to get FC15 to act as an IPv6 router for a while now, am sure I am missing something trivial.. The idea is that I have a ppp / adsl connection (this works fine), use the wireless card on my pc with hostapd and dhcpd to provide connections to other pcs (works fine), and radvd to delegate ipv6 addresses.

The issue seem to be that as soon as I turn on ipv6 forwarding (net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding =1), the ppp connection no longer gets an IPv6 address. This means the router cannot ping any ipv6 address outside my network.

If I disable ipv6 routing, my router gets an IPv6 address on its ppp connection, and can ping things such as ipv6.google.com just fine, however (of course) no packets are forwarded from my network and radvd complains that forwarding is disabled.

General :: Drivers - Unable To Activate Wireless After Device Has Been Re-enabled

May 8, 2010

Using a Eee 900A netbook by Asus. By pressing Fn + F2, I can disable or enable the wireless chip on the netbook, a blue LED indicates the status. I've been able to connect to wireless networks just fine with this netbook. However, if the wireless chip ever becomes disabled, I have to reboot to get my network connection back. This generally happens when suspending. For some reason the LED will be off and I have to hit Fn + F2 for it to light up again.

However, after doing so, Linux will not reconnect to the network. It simply changes the wireless status from "wireless is disabled" to "device not ready". Even worse, I've recently had issues with the chip being enabled at boot, thus making it nearly impossible to get connected. I've searched around on-line but haven't found much of anything useful on this. This happens on all kinds of different distros including Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook, EeeBuntu 4 beta, Jolicloud and Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook.
