I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a new acer emachine e525. All is fine except that now I cannot switch the wireless on as the button above the keyboard no longer functions. Can anyone tell me what I can do to fix this as wireless is obviously vital in a laptop. BTW the wireless waqs working fine while the machine had Vista on it.

I've had a host of problems since upgrading to 11.04 Natty Narwhal, so let's deal with these 1 at a time.
I've got a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion G60 laptop. Next to the power button is a handy wireless on/off button. This has always worked well with previous editions (9.04,through 10.10). first press toggles the wireless off, second press toggles it on.
Not so in 11.04. The toggle off works great, first time. But, it will not toggle back on. Not after any number of tries, not after restarting, not after booting into other OS's (9.10 and Vista) re-enabling it there and then booting back into Narwhal. to further complicate the issue, this feature bypass the network manager, so toggling the wireless off by the switch leaves me showing no wireless adapter in the network manager. I also restarted, switched from Unity to a Gnome session, but the issue still persists.
As my only network options are wireless, this has become a substantial inconvenience.

EDIT: so the network util is actually saying "wireless disabled by hardware switch". Also noticed it I enable it in 9.10, reboot to 11.04 (where I inevitably fail to re-enable it), then reboot into 9.10, it will initially be disabled. The key difference is in 9.10 I have the ability to enable wifi using the hardware button. It seems that 11.04 is remembering that wireless is disabled between boots. Is there a place it might be storing this value? If so, I may be able simply to set the value as enabled, since toggling that silly button isn't working.

I have a hp zd7249cl laptop and have installed ubuntu 10.10 on it. The main problem I am having at the time is the wireless button will not turn on so there for I have no internet access. The switch works fine in windows, but not in ubuntu. The switch didn't work with the live cd either, but I thought it might after install. The wired card that is in the laptop is no good and quit working a couple of years ago so all I have is wireless now.

I want to install Linux on my laptop. I started with Arch but 4 hours later, I'll take anything so now I'm trying Ubuntu.It appears that the keyboard function button that corresponds to my wireless does not work, and perhaps is windows dependent?Every time I try to interact with wlan0, I get the error "Operation not possible due to RF-kill". And as I've looked around online, it has been suggested in other forums that the only way to resolve this is to reinstall windows and dual boot, so the FN key will work.
I think this is ridiculous. There must be a way to persuade the RF-kill to be turned off again, shouldn't there?I don't have a recover disk for this laptop and I don't want to go through the trouble of requested one from acer. I reformatted the whole disk while attempted to install arch.
My wireless works flawlessly (aside from my generally crappy signal ahaha), but when I decided to do a minimal Ubuntu live install on my netbook [Asus Eee 1005PE] (I tried both 10.04 and 10.10 with the same results), it wouldn't pick up my ethernet.
I decided just to load up my existing OS (Ubuntu 10.04 32-Bit) and got the same thing.
The wireless, as stated before, works without a problem, and it's weird, because the wireless manager says that knows the ethernet connection is there, but it won't connect to it...
[Edit: I did play around with different combinations in the BIOS (ie: lan enabled, wlan disabled, ect...)
I am trying to write a simple program in C that involves nesting switches. For example switch 1 offers an option to go to module 1 or 2 or quit. when I go to module 1 there is another switch function offering two or more choices.
I can select either module 1 or 2 at the start of the program and the selection text for, say, module 1 prints to screen but then exits without allowing a second selection to be entered.
I tried using free([first selection]) thinking that might do the trick but it doesn't.
Is it possible to next switches on after another in C?
I think I may have finally killed my computer. My graphics card broke down a month ago, it was an XFX Nvidia 8600 GT. I swapped it out with an old 7600 GS, and it worked fine. XFX sent me an HD 4650 as a replacement, which I installed today. I powered my PC back on and it seemed to run fine but I had no picture, and the mouse didn't light up like it normally does. I put the 7600 GS back in and tried again. Nothing. I'm worried that the motherboard is malfunctioning or something. Does anyone have a clue what happened here?

View 8 Replies View RelatedIn testing that all my bits of hardware work I have come to my 3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator. The hardware is virtually new and works absolutely fine in XP (that is what I am trying to escape from).
When the spacenavigator is plugged in it works absolutely fine so long as I move the thing with a soft feather. It is so sensitive that it is un-useable.My problem is that although the system has recognised it and has it in the hardware scan in YaST but nowhere can I find any way to change the sensitivity settings and button functions.
I've been running Karmic since it was officially released on my Dell Studio 17 (specs are in my signature) with a Broadcom wireless half mini wireless card.hen I installed Karmic, it gave me the option to install proprietary drivers for my video card as well as 2 Broadcom drivers, STA and one of the BC43 drivers. I installed all of these, and the only problems I had were with the audio. I spent a few days troubleshooting the audio and finally got PulseAudio set up for my card.
Almost 3 months later, I was making use of my wireless network at home, as I had done plenty of times over the previous 3 months, when I closed the lid (thus putting the computer into sleep mode) and took it to the hospital to stay with my fiancé¥ after her surgery. When I got to the hospital, I couldn't get their network to show up. Network Manager didn't even recognize the network. We had also brought my fianc饧s laptop (same machine with a slightly less powerful CPU and only 4 GB of RAM). She is running Windows 7, which detected the hospital's network with no problems.After trying to ad-hoc the hospital network with no success, I finally just gave up and played Sudoku and toyed with some graphics stuff in GIMP until we came home. Upon returning home, however, I was shocked that my card didn't even detect our home network.
I have been unsuccessful for the past 3 days in getting Network Manager to identify our wireless network. The wired network connects without issue and I am able to make use of a USB Belkin adapter, which identifies all 7 of the various wireless networks in my neighborhood, including our home network.While I would be able to simply carry my Belkin adapter with me in order to make use of wireless networks, I would really like to solve this problem with my Broadcom adapter. Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.

I want to know how to change this specific keys' function, such as use it to launch a terminal or another Super key. Ive tried Keyboard Shortcuts but its main right click function prevails. Also, searchng the forums and google only brings up how to change the entire keyboard layout to DVORAK or something and that's not what I want to do.

View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning Wheezy 7.8 with LXDE desktop. I have noticed that the task bar volume control no longer seems to function. Volume can be controlled by apps, such as Youtube in Google Chrome. The volume control used to work. I really don't know exactly when this started but probably after the last update on Monday, Feb. 10 2015.
I have checked the PulseAudio settings and don't see any way there. Ran a sound test and the volume can be controlled from the PulseAudio panel but NOT the task bar volume control.
Here is a bit of interesting additional info. When I play the audio thru my analog speakers the volume control has no affect. But when I play the sound thru my USB headset, the volume control works. Very strange.

With that message, I press the wifi button on my HP laptop and it turns off my blue-tooth, without changing the status of my wifi.

Ubuntu, been using windows for years and now use Mac. I have Ubuntu running on a netbook at work and all of a sudden my wireless connection not only doesn't work, it doesn't seem to exist! Wired still works fine, but the wireless option has vanished. How do I reset or restore or whatever it takes to get my wireless working again?

1. Under Network Manager, I am unable to click "Wireless Networks"
2. I just installed 10.10 on my HP dv2700 laptop and I can't get the wireless card to turn on. Here are some of my results. I get the same results regardless of which position the wireless switch is in and the indicator light always indicates that the wireless is off.

I am new with Linux and I am trying to figure out how to get my wireless working. My wireless LED does not switch on and it also does not work. In some threads I have seen people post some outputs of command from the terminal. I do not know how to copy this because I can not use ctrl + c in the terminal.

It has multiple control files and want to know which file works best with ubuntu server. My reason for asking is some of the manual pages do not display correctly and keyboard functions seem to function incorrectly via VT100 and I have eighteen to choose from?

And still have no wifi, when I click the icon in the menu bar it says under "Wireless Networks": "wireless is disabled by hardware switch", which ins't true because on my Vostro 1520, there is only one switch and it is in the on position. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a 'Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000'. In addition to the regular left/right click and scroll wheel it has an extra button on the side. In previous versions of Ubuntu I was able to remap this button to act as double-click using 'xbindkeys'. However, in Lucid this no longer seems to work. X seems to know about all of the buttons on the mouse since 'xinput' lists the device as having 13 buttons and labels button 8 as 'Button Side'. However, 'xev' does not show a button event when I press the button. Instead it shows:

I downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu yesterday (10.04 LTS) for the first time and it worked like a treat, with the Internet conencting immediately without any problems. However, this morning I turned on my laptop and despite seemingly connecting to the network, Ubuntu won't conenct to the Internet. It is also repeatedly asking for me to re-input the WEP Key despite it being correct and always automatically inputted.

I've been looking around for hours on the Internet to try and find a solution but to no avail, even though people do seem to experience similar problems.
10.04 was connecting to wireless on boot up without a problem.After updating, it can no longer do it. I have to click on the wireless icon (which has an exclamation mark through it) and connect to hidden. I can then choose my wireless profile and am asked for my elevated privileges password. Once supplied, the connection is made.I presume the encryption password is 'locked' now at boot.

There are no problems on my two other machines, so I'm sure the problem is the netbook. I have no idea how to go about troubleshooting this.
