Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Doesn't Work After Reinstalling 10.10?
Mar 28, 2011
I can't connect to the internet as the wifi hasn't worked since I reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10...It might be a hardware problem as this problem occured, when I tried to install Windows 7 but it didn't work on my computer...than I decided to reinstall Ubuntu 10.10, but than the wifi just wasn't working...but it was working before the win 7 installation and during the installation win 7 recognized my wireless connections...and even when I tried installing win 7 AGAIN it still recognized them...but every time I want to install Ubuntu 10.10...wireless just doesn't work.
my wireless network doesnt recognize that any network is around. The broadcom STA driver will not install and it says "Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log" the jog file says
I have an HP DV6 3143se which has a Ralink 3090 wifi card in it.the only thing that doesn't work at the moment is the Wifi. I tried installing the Linux backports module, but the trouble is that sometimes, my home wifi network is shown on the list of available networks and most often, it's not. when the network does show up, and i click on it and enter my WPA2 password, it takes ages to handshake and then it tells me that my password is wrong. the same password works in windows 7 so something's not working.
when i try to disable and re enable wireless network on the network manager applet, i get a Wireless device not ready or Network manager not running message.
i'm running Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit on an Acer Aspire 3050 laptop with an Atheros AR5BMB5 WiFi card.
The problem i'm having is that the hardware switch to turn the WiFi on and off isn't working right. When I hit the switch to turn it off, the light doesn't turn off, and Ubuntu just disconnects from the network and searches for more WiFi networks - it doesn't say that the WiFi has been deactivated, and I don't think it is. When I hit the switch again, it finds my network and connects to it.
The lspci -v | less command gives me the following information for the WiFi:
Code: 08:04.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC (rev 01) Subsystem: AMBIT Microsystem Corp. Device 0418 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 168, IRQ 21
[Code]....
It lists a different model of card, but it's using what I assume is the correct driver, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I've checked the card itself and it is a AR5BMB5.
I would like to fix it so the switch actually turns the WiFi off instead of just making it search for more networks (I assume it's not actually turning off), and perhaps make the light turn off as it should as well.
The auto connect feature of NetworkManager Applet (version 0.7.997) isn't working on my system. If the WiFi connection dies, Network Manager doesn't detect that the connection has been lost and try to reestablish the connection. I have to manually click on the WiFi hotspot to reestablish the connection. This appears to be the case both while the computer is running and when I first boot it up (i.e. when booting, if the first attempt at establishing a WiFi connection doesn't succeed, Network Manager doesn't retry or try another hotspot). Is this "normal" behavior for Network Manager? If not, does anyone know a fix? Here's some more info about my system:
I installed openSUSE 11.3 under 2 machines, one of them using a Linksys USB wireless N adapter (rt73usb) and another using an Atheros AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (ath5k). I have a Belkin f5D8236-4 router, with the SSID "linksys". I also have an Ubuntu 10.04 machine which has working wireless internet. I know almost nothing about networking, but from what I can tell, openSUSE 11.3 seems to have trouble with DHCP, specifically setting the dynamic IP address. To try to go about fixing this, I attempted to set a static IP, but I am quite confused by all the settings.
I have tried both the graphical "Network Manager" (KDE, Gnome, and command line versions) and ifup, both with no luck.
Here is the information from the working Ubuntu machine code...
Last week used lxde11.3 and no problem connecting. Today I switched to xfce11.3 and the wifi card is registering fine as connected but it doesn't send the key out apparently to register the connection to the modem so it is fully activated.
I think lxde had a network manager but in xfce here I'm using Yast. What mismatch do I have here ? How do I start a network manager so the key will connect ?
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Powerbook G4 1.5ghz 15", and the ethernet port on the laptop doesn't work. So I can't search for drivers to install.
Is there a way to either tether internet to the laptop using firewire? find the necessary drivers so I can transfer them?
I've just upgraded my old laptop from xubuntu to ubuntu 10.10 and I have some connectivity problems with my usb adapter Netgear WG111v3. On xubuntu I had no problems with connecting on the network but with ubuntu, it says I have good reception but it doesn't connect on the network (rarely it does, but for a very short time). I have another laptop currently running on ubuntu 10.04 and it has no problems at all (however it has an internal usb card).
I have a Compaq Presario with an Atheros AR5002 wireless card. I just installed Karmic and the wifi is the only thing not working. Wireless does work in 9.04. Here's what I get with iwconf
lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. wmaster0 no wireless extensions.
I have xbmc, a media center shell that runs on ubuntu. I am trying to set up a laptop to run it and be a full time media center. so far it works great, I installed xbmc live, but the only issue is I have a wep2 protected wireless router and the wifi does not connect automatically.
I have it set up and am using wpa_supplicant once those commands are run the wifi works great.I am a novice in linux in general, and can not seem to get this to work on startup, can anyone point me in the right direction on this? I haven't been able to find the xbmc start up script if one exists, I figured adding those lines to it might work, does this sound like a reasonable approach? if anyone knows where that is and how it is defined to be launched on start-up i would appreciate it(I guess this is getting into the general Linux knowledge but still good info)
I have this annoying problem since day one.I am testing out Red Hat RHEL5, everything is fine except DNS look up.If I ping www.google.com, it doesn't work, ping ip address it all works;if I bring up browser, put www.google.com it doesn't work, can't find the name, however, simply put ip address there it works. My DNS seeting seems ok, and the DNS works from Windows box.
I have an Asrock A330GC, with onboard ethernet, and an Engenius PCI card for wifi.I installed ubuntu server 9.10 no problems, and it picked up my ethernet in the installation with no difficulties.I couldn't get 9.10 to do what i wanted, so I tried installing 8.4 instead. This however didn't pick up any of the drivers, so i couldn't get online. So i reinstalled 9.10, only to find that no couldn't find network in the installation.Absolutely NOTHING has changed, the ethernet cable still plugged in, and if i plug same cable into my laptop, it works fine.Any ideas people?ifconfig doesn't mention any eth0, just lo, with an ip of 127.0.0.1 and amask of 255.0.0.0 which i'm fairly certain means its dead
I have been trying to get 9.10 to work with my D Link DWA 125 USB WiFi antenna for days now. I have searched these forums as well as other forums for answers. I have tried all of the suggestions I have come across, some simple, some complex. Nothing works. I have tried ndiswrapper, blacklisting drivers, re-installing, modifying the 2870sta.dat file......nothing works (or maybe I'm doing it wrong...I don't know).
I have a fresh install of 9.10 .Can someone please walk me through this and show me what I'm doing wrong?
I have been trying to install the driver for my Intel 5100 wireless card. I got the "correct" driver from the Intel site for Linux, but cannot figure out how to install it even after reading READ ME. So I tried ndiswrapper and couldn't figure that out either. I can't find the files it is talking about.
I've bought this Blumax USB WLAN adapter 9009 (ID 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501/RT2573 Wireless Adapter). I was specifically happy to read in its specs that it supports Linux [URL].
However, it turned out that the co-packaged CD drive doesn't contain anything Linux-related, and the support page online has gzip package with many files I don't know what to do with [URL]. The online support swallowed my query and hasn't returned any answer.
So, now I am wondering what to do. I don't feel so competent as to be able to compile the drivers on my own, specifying several specific parameters. At least it doesn't compile with default params. how to move forward with this. Apart from returning the device, because I'm too far now from the place where I bought this.
Just reinstalled ubuntu 10.10 x86 on an old laptop. The wireless doesn't seem to work and I have no idea how to solve this.
In gnome I can see NetworkManager display the network ESSID. I have entered the key but no success, it tries to connect and then times out after about 1-2 mins.
I have tried to change the encryption from WPA2, to WPA to WEP to nothing but the same issue.
In a terminal/shell running ifconfig/iwconfig I can see eth1 as the networkinterface.
How can I investigate this further. If there was an IRQ collission or something it would not be showing the ESSID right?
I'm looking for a cheap and stable wifi card that will work with Ubuntu 11.04. My Linksys WMP300N is creating a conflict with the native Broadcom driver (causing the system to freeze after light network traffic) and ndiswrappper isn't working for 64 bit Ubuntu.
Does anyone own a relatively cheap (less than $40USD) PCI card that works flawlessly, or close to flawlessly with 64bit Ubuntu 11.04? I need to get off of this 35ft ethernet cord. Cat5 + crossing top of stairs = problem in the future.
In my laptop, after upgrade, wifi stop working. My laptop is Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro V2065, wifi cart Philips 12127e (from IBM T41), linux kernel: 2.6.37-020637rc3.This card worked before upgrade, and work on windows Command lshw -c network return:Quote:

I have 10.04 lucid installed on a presario 2800t laptop(it's old and hasn't got much memory). Anyway, now I can't get my Netgear WNA1100 to work. I know it works right away with 11.04, but that isn't really an option for me. It's too slow on this old computer. get it working with 10.04?
I have a brand new ASUS EEE PC 900HA with Ubuntu 9.10 installed on it. The wireless hasn't worked yet but the ethernet is fine. I've been browsing the forums for hours to find a fix but now I've installed/queried/removed so many things I'm totally confused.
lspci -v gives me this
Code:
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller (rev b0) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 8324 Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 27
I just installed x64 Fedora, and as the title says, NM fails to detect my WiFi card. It's an Encore ENLWI-N with a RaLink RT2800 chipset. The card does show up when I run lspci, although iwconfig yields nothing. Not sure if this helps, but when Ias running Karmic Koala, Ubuntu detected the card immediately and required no configuration
I have a Sony VAIO VGN SR29VN with ubuntu 9.10; I am trying to make a wifi connection through WPA work, to no avail. WEP and open connections work correctly, but when I try to connect to a WPA network using TTLS via network manager, y get errors of this type:Current regulatory domain updated by AP to:ES
preceded by lots of "leaving channel xxxx intact" and followed by "disassociating by local choice".This Sony is using an Intel 5100 wifi; any idea of what's going on or how to fix it?
Fresh install Ubuntu 10.10 on Acer Aspire 5050 with new hard drive. I struggled to turn the Wifi's button turn on but led light always on. It does not detect wifi driver. I installed ndiswrapper to get Acer's Winxp driver: netathr.inf by Windows Wireless Drivers from Ubuntu Software download. It's same thing as ndiswrapper.
I have a TP-Link WN851n ver2 with the ar922x chip. This just seems to drop out. it sometimes connects but not reliable. It is just plain annoying. I have to run windows to get any wifi to work properly.
I ran yum broadcom-wl and installed the driver for my card no problem. I connected to the internet just fine using my wifi thereafter.
When I shut my laptop down and booted sometime later, the wireless connection was gone and I didn't even see a wireless adapter in the networking applet.
I tried to run insmod wl and insmod wl.ko and that failed.
So... after using yum to install the broadcom drivers, how can I make that install 'permanent'; so I don't lose my wireless adapter each time I reboot?
