Have just installed ubuntu 11.04 on an old laptop. I have US robotics 5410 card for wirelss however I am unable to get my wireless to work.

I just got my new sager p150hm and everything is great, but i can not get the wireless to work in ubuntu. i've been poking in the dark for a good 8 hours total and have made very little progress so far. As I said in the title the card is a bigfoot killer wirless-n which is based on an athos chip. so far i have tried to install the latest compat-wireless package per command line, which failed, so i installed it through apt, which worked, but didn't fix the problem. next i installed the linux-firmware package which didn't do anything either. here is some info on what's what

Currently I'm having trouble connecting to the guest wireless network at my work. I've read through a couple threads that seem similar to my problem. I tried going through the terminal window and following the instructions that was offered to others. I'm just wondering if my hardware is different, if I need drivers, if my permissions aren't correct.
1. I recently received a Sony Vaio laptop model # VGN-FE770G from a friend, and I'm enjoying running Ubuntu.
2. I followed another thread that suggested to change some lines in /etc/network/interfaces, but I don't have permission to edit this file. I don't really have the need to set up multiple users on my laptop, so how can I change my permissions to root? (Or is it a good idea even?) Should I log in as root?
3. How can I set my laptop up to be flexible with network selections, using hardware: (built-in camera and microphone for example), and useful applications?

I recently reinstalled Fedora 15 on my laptop and have been unable to get the wireless driver to work as it has before. I successfully installed the akmod-wl package from rpmfusion, built the akmod successfully, and rebooted with no success.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to switch my laptop from XP to Ubuntu, but right now, i cant risk installing it. i dont want to have it partitioned so i can dual boot, so for now i only run the try-it-out mode.Before i consider installing though, i want to see if i can get everything to work ahead of time, that way im not regreting instalation. I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, with 55GB hard drive and 516MB ram. So far, the trial mode is working great, but the wireless will not work. Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just switched from Ubuntu to Fedora 13 because I was unable to get Ubuntu to connect to wireless networks. I tried everything suggested in help and forums, and kept getting "Bad Password" with WICD and Network Manager. Now, with Fedora...I still can't connect.
Problem #1: The guide says to "...make sure that the relevant wireless interface (usually eth0 or eth1) is controlled by NetworkManager," and that I do this via: System>Administration>Network
However, there is no Network option under System>Administration.
Problem #2: I open Network Manager, which displays a list of networks. I click on mine, configure it with WPA and the right password, and it fails to connect: "The network connection has been disconnected."
I can't get my card Intel Wireless 5300 AGN to work. I'm running Slackware 13.1 and it's a full, fresh install.I get to show up with lspci -v:Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5300 AGN [Shiloh] Network Connection...But it will not show up with 'ifconfig' which will only list the local loopback (yes we have have a eth problem as well but one thing at a time).

I've been experiencing a problem with Fedora in which when I enable Wireless in Fedora, Wireless networking does not work in windows. HOwever, when disabled, it works correctly. Windows claims it is "not able to find any networks to connect to"
EDIT: It seems that when wireless is disabled manually on fedora before shutdown, there are no problems in windows.

I'm very new to Ubuntu and Linux in general. I installed Ubunutu NBR on a HP Mini 2140. After some wireless issues and a bad decision, I deleted the ssb.ko files. Now the wireless won't work at all. How can I repair the SSB modules or reinstall those files?

In ubuntu,though, i can't get the wireless to work at all and I don't really even know how to troubleshoot it. I've opened a terminal and used sudo to update various packages, but still nothing. It does appear as though the system recognizes the card since I can configure it, but I'm not keen on playing wi8th the BSSID and MAC address stuff because I just don't have any confidence that it will change my situation. Has anyone had any success with this setup (ubuntu 9.1 and acer one)? Is there a step-by-step wireless troubleshooting/ configuration process that's generic to ubuntu?
View 8 Replies View RelatedLet me start off by saying that I'm a complete Linux-noob. I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and I'm really enjoying it. I was planning to install it for quite a while now but now that I have my own computer, I actually could make it happen.That being said, it's a whole difference with Windows though and sometimes it's hard to find my way in this new system. My main problem is that I can't seem to get my wireless connection working. From what I've read online this problem is not uncommon with Ubuntu 9.10?
I tried searching for my wireless card drivers in 'System > Administration > Hardware Drivers' but that didn't really work out. It did find a wireless card driver but when I try to activate it, it returns an error message. All the other drivers seem to be installed so I can't really see what the problem is. Can anyone help me with this?BTW, I think I also have a problem with the graphics card driver. When I try to active the 'extra' desktop effects is says this can't be activate. I already tried installing Compiz and the Composite Manager.
I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a computer I can't get the wireless to work. I looked into it, and I believe the problem is that I don't have the right driver to work with the wireless card, but I wasn't able to tell what my wireless card is properly. And when I got the bcmwl-kernel-source package and installed it, the driver still didn't appear under "hardware drivers". Compounding the problem, I can't use any sudo commands for some reason because when it prompts me to enter the sudo password, the keys other than "enter" don't seem to work. I probably don't have the right information up there.

I have a problem with my laptop's wireless card. My laptop is Grundig GNB-250D. According to lspci my wireless card is a "Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88w8335 [Libertas] 802.11b/g Wireless (rev 43)".

I have a wireless connection through my laptop's BCM4312. But I cannot get it to work at all not sure if i dont have the drivers and it grays out enable wireless... Do i have to get a different card? The card is installed now its saying that the wireless is disabled? How to get around that?

I didn't know what to put since I had already tried multiple pass words I restarted the router.Now for some reason the computer won't pick up the router wireless signal. It picks up multiple connection's around my area so I know that it's not the wireless card. The router is connected via ethernet at the moment so I know the internet works.Do I have to find the ssid? I just installed Ubontu 9.10 and I am a first time user. I am attempting to run my Sabrent usb 2.0 wireless-N ieee 802.11n device with Ubontu but I cant seem to figure it out. I can not access it as a regular usb device and I can't access the installation driver. The device loads up an installation screen when I use it on windows so I know its not the device. Not sure how to install it or to get it to run from here.
