Well I guess the topic says it all. I've recently upgraded to Maverick from Lucid all went smoothly until i restarted and realized that the remote desktop server included stopped functioning all of a sudden. tried other vnc servers with no luck.
View 9 RepliesI just remotely updated my uncle's Ubuntu 10.10 desktop to 11.04. My uncle has no computer skills, so it is very important that I troubleshoot his problems using VNC. After completing the 11.04 upgrade, I was not able to connect to him via VNC. After some fiddling around I was able to connect by turning off the confirmation option in the Security section. We are now using the password security option. The problem is that my uncle does not have any security against my peering eyes.
I tried reinstalling Vinagre, but that didn't help. Is it possible to get the confirmation option working again somehow?
Is there a download link for Vinagre 3.01 (deb)?
I have a remote desktop app for my ipod that i use every now and then, but after about a week and a half of not using remote desktop on either my ipod or my computer, it seems to have stopped working. the problem is with my computer rather than my ipod. when i go to menu>system>preferences>remote desktop, the area where it is supposed to give you the ip address, or whatever it is to connect remotely, is no longer a number, but just the word "localhost". i only saw this after my ipod told me it could not find the host, so i checked and thats when i saw localhost. putting that into the remote desktop app did nothing, so i tried my ip address and that didnt work either. clicking on "localhost" brings up evolution mail which wants me to send it as an email, strangely. not sure whats going on here.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently setup an ssh tunnel and wrote a script to connect to my Home PC from my laptop no matter where I am.
I have previously tested this on my own network and multiple other networks while I was over at my friends houses, and it worked completely fine.
So just now I decided to use it after about a day or two after not using it and now nothing happens. Normally it prompts me for a password and takes about 5 seconds then I am in.
I'm using openssh, vinagre, and dyndns for the hostname. Here is the script:

Remote desktop viewer has stopped working in ubuntu 10.04. When I click on the icon in the top panel. The message Starting Remote Desktop viewer appears in the bottom panel for about 20 seconds and then it disappears and nothing further happens.
Yesterday I disabled ipv6 which greatly speed up thunderbird email and coincidently solved a problem I was having with Google earth not connecting to the server.
I do not know if this is what is now causing the problem with Remote Desktop viewer.
For more than a year I was happily using my Fedora 11 remotely through VNC over ssh. I was using desktop 0 on port 5900 so people at the office can see what I am doing.
Yesterday I upgraded to Fedora 12, then 13 and then 14. I installed all updates of F14. All went well until I came to use this server from home as usual. The server was not responding.
I brought up /etc/X11/xorg.conf from a backup tape because I discovered that it is there that screen 0 is set and not in /etc/sysconfig/vncservers and rebooted. No success!
At the command lsof | grep LISTEN, I could not see a listener on port 5900
I activated screen 1 on port 5901 and I could log in OK and with lsof I could see listeners for ports 5901 and 6001 but I need screen 0!
During the day I tried many things including removing the vncserver packages with yum and re-installing them, removing the .vnc folder in the user home folder and starting from scratch. The server is still refusing connection!
I'm currently running Ubuntu 9.10.After I updated to 9.10, my wireless connection stoppped working. I can access the network but I get no response or what so ever in my browser.Downloading language support or any software doesn't work either.Haven't changed anything to my settings and checked the router. Router works just fine.
View 7 Replies View RelatedLike many others it seems, my wireless has stopped working since a recent upgrade The answer does not lie in analysis of logs, settings etc. but surely with those who did it - they should provide a fix. I cannot believe everyone expects each individual users to go into their own analysis of why this is no longer working as it is clearly widespread. I have been using Ubuntu for 18 months without this problem on the same dual-boot laptop, and it still works on Windows as before, only Ubuntu 10.4 has recently stopped my network card from working.
I need to know when this will be fixed. I have been embarrassed by promoting Ubuntu to many colleagues who now also cannot work at home on their wireless networks. Seriously disillusioned I may start looking for a more stable alternative to Windows.

I have a Broadcom wireless card in my hp dv6500z laptop, I had it all working properly in FC9 thanks to bbfuller and his post on the subject. After I upgraded to FC11 I have been unable to get it to connect.
I can see my neighbor's sites and suppose I could see my own if the SSID was allowed to broadcast but I keep that turned off. I put in all of the setting, including the network security key, but it won't connect, then when I go back and look again, the security key is not even close to what I put in; it gets changed to a huge string of characters.
I redownloaded broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2.tar and followed the instruction on the post once again but no luck, which, after I thought about it, was a waste of time because if I can see other's wireless, then the card must be working. I have tried using Network Manager and not using Network Manager and still no luck...
I am running Fedora 14. I've had an ASUS wireless adapter working for a few months now, with no problems. Today, I installed updates, one of which required a computer reboot (not just logging out and back in). I rebooted the computer, and when it came back up, the wireless adapter did not work.The adapter is visible after lsusb, but there is no wireless showing after iwconfig. What happened? How do I fix it?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a Laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 and a Netbook with Remix 10.04. I'm trying to connect by Remote Desktop from the Laptop to the Netbook. Remote Desktop wasn't installed by default in Remix so I installed it via software centre. I then configured Remote desktop in both machines. When I do Connect on the laptop all I get is a black screen and then it closes with the message "Connection to host was Closed". This happens when I try either VNC or SSH. The other thing that's odd, although both machines are on the same WLAN and I checked "configure networkautomatically to accept connections" on both machines, the Laptop doesn't find the other machine in Remote Desktop. What am I/have I done wrong or have I ommitted something?

I thought that it might be the new kernel, but changing back to the old kernel I still have the problem.

In the summer a few months back, I managed to get my ancient HP Laserjet 6L printer working via a wired D-Link-DPR 1061 print server and Netgear network switch. This was even though it was not on the print server's compatibility list. A couple of months later it stopped printing and I have not been able to get it going again since.
The print server has one parallel port (used by the 6L) and a couple of USB ports which I don't use.
I have been going through the Ubuntu add printer wizard. The print server can connect via an IP address. I am using its device URI: lpd://ip address/dlk-portname
I have tried all 5 HP laserjet 6L drivers that come with Ubuntu without success. I have the foomatic/ljet4 [en] currently selected. When I try to print a test page nothing is printed and when I do a print self test I get this message:
CUPS SERVER ERROR There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-error-document-format-not-supported'.
By, the way I also have a Windows 7 PC and managed to get the 6L working with same print server using the XP drivers, but every so often it stops working. A reinstall gets it going again.
I am trying to set up a remote server on an old desktop that i have and i am running into problems. I have the packet installed but i can not get it to run. When ever I enter /sbin/service sshd start

After using fedora 11 for a month or two now the ethernet gave out on me tonight. However if I switch to my ubuntu or windows XP install it runs fine. I made no recent changes to network connections, and no installed programs that should effect it.

I have tried, restarting, older kernel, restarting services, and clearing the DNS Cache. The specific error I get is that "Firefox can't find the server", and most other applications return similar. I can however ping websites still. All other computers on the network are running fine, and booting into another system the internet will work. Just not for fedora.
I am at a loss. I can not access my work remote desktop via the terminal server client on my wired box running Ubuntu 10.10. My wireless laptop is able to connect right away once I established the VPN connection. The VPN connection is established on both boxes with no problems.
When I tried the Terminal Server Client on my wired boxed, it says it can not establish a connection. Yet my wireless box gets connected immediately!
I check the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and the /etc/resolv.conf to see if there were any differences, but they are essentially the same. When I have the vpnc connection, they both recognize it and I am able to ping the IP address shown when I do a "ifconfig" on the terminal.
What can be the problem? Anything I need to configure on a wired computer versus a wireless one? What else can I check?
Frivolous, I know, but you can't imagine how many winbloz users see this on my laptop and ask how they can get openSuse.

I'm wondering if anyone is having a similar problem as mine when running Hulu Desktop. The application starts fine, but when I try to select anything to watch, the green progress bar continually resets over and over again as it tries to buffer a video, and playback never starts as a result. This happens for low, medium, and high quality. Hulu Desktop was working perfectly fine a few months ago. I've always been running Ubuntu 9.10 (64-bit) with the latest 64-bit Flash pluggins, and didn't have a problem before. Running Hulu Desktop from the command line doesn't reveal any error messages either.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 8.10 to 9.10 and now my sound doesn't work (note: I don't know if sound was working on 9.4, since I only ran that long enough to upgrade again) Sound was working just fine under 8.10, and I just tried booting up with a livecd I had handy, which is 8.04.1 and sound worked right off the bat, no problems.I've checked the volumes on everything, including the master volume which WAS initially set to 0.Sadly, turning that up did nothing.The Pulseaudio Volume Control app seems to think nothing's wrong- it's picking up the sound from various applications just fine, the volumes are all on, etc. (aplay lists my soundcard fine:

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and my VMware stopped working. I got a message to recompile into the kernel. I followed the prompts and it was unsuccessful. I tried to uninstall and reinstall VMware getting the same error. See below an extract from the log file.Before you can run VMware, serveral moduels must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel.

The problem i'm having is that my microphone stopped working after the upgrade to 10.10. Ubuntu doesn't seen any sort of input device any more, no line-in , no mic ( front as back ).Own on to the specs of my machine:It has a realtek ALC861-VD audio chip.2 mic jacks, 1 line-in , 2 out (front and back) and a coaxial port thing .The os is a upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and everything except this and my tv card sound works.I have pulse audio tools and alsa mixer ( although it broke during upgrade ) installed.alsa info is available upon request, so is any other info may you need it.

Any ideas what might have caused this? Any work-arounds? (apart from Ctrl-Alt-(arrow) / switching to a different workspace - which is a fair workaround)

I have two hard disks and i had one of the partitions mounted automatically while startup. I did that by reading the first method posted here

It was working good till i did the distribution update to Kubuntu 10.04. After the upgrade while startup, a message is displayed on the screen saying

I dont know what to do. I have to skip and then mount the partition manually. I think the entry i added in

I updated my Ubuntu to Meerkat last night. everything seems to be working fine, except when i went to iplayer, it told me flash wasn't installed. I followed the link, and installed flash from APT source. In the software centre it is listed as installed. However, still cannot view flash videos.i have tried rebooting too.

My laptop is Dell Inspiron 14R which is i think is more than capable for running Unity 3D. When I rebooted after upgrade there was just a blank wallpaper screen, without Unity interface at all.

Also this appears to have started after another user was using my system and crashed it. They said that it just shut-off with no explanation as to what happened.
