I am trying to set up a remote server on an old desktop that i have and i am running into problems. I have the packet installed but i can not get it to run. When ever I enter /sbin/service sshd start

I am a Linux newbie. I am trying to see if it is possible to access a windows pc through some form of vpn/rdp setup. My machine is dual boot with Windows XP. On Windows XP, I am able to connect to my office via VPN client to connect to my office, then Remote Desktop to my local machine on the network.. Is there some way for me to do this with Linux? I find it really annoying to have to boot to Windows just to access my work pc.

And I want to have root access to everything via remote desktop or VNC.What I have tried: system->preferences->remote desktop to enable remote desktop, I can connect and see the desktop, the mouse clicks would only show on the directly connected monitor, not in my VNC session.Then I tried to install TightVNC server, start a at display :1, I can also connect, but every time any action requires a root access, such as installing a package using Ubuntu Software Center, the root password prompt would only show up on the directly connected monitor.
I also install xrdp package, and followed instructions here: [URL]It actually worked using Remote Desktop application from my Mac or Windows box for a little while until I restarted the machine, thinking I can unplug the monitor and connect via remote desktop from then on. Then it stopped working.
I am playing around with the idea of being able to use a cloud or instance based service to install Ubuntu 9.10 Server. This will enable me to have remote access via SSH command line.So far, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server + Ubuntu Desktop to a virtual machine. I can access this via SSH and locally via the desktop. However, in the real environment the only access I am going to have initially is via SSH.

I am unable to run remote desktop from my fc 13 server, to my laptop. I have read the remote desktop setup and added port 6000 to firewall, added host name of server to xhost (nick@192.168.1.110). Added the line to /etc/gdm/custom.conf like in fedora guide (DisallowTCP=false). But i still get the error

Well I guess the topic says it all. I've recently upgraded to Maverick from Lucid all went smoothly until i restarted and realized that the remote desktop server included stopped functioning all of a sudden. tried other vnc servers with no luck.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just remotely updated my uncle's Ubuntu 10.10 desktop to 11.04. My uncle has no computer skills, so it is very important that I troubleshoot his problems using VNC. After completing the 11.04 upgrade, I was not able to connect to him via VNC. After some fiddling around I was able to connect by turning off the confirmation option in the Security section. We are now using the password security option. The problem is that my uncle does not have any security against my peering eyes.
I tried reinstalling Vinagre, but that didn't help. Is it possible to get the confirmation option working again somehow?

New Fedora 13 Install. I have Remote Desktop Enabled. I can access the machine from itself but not others on the network. I stopped the firewall, that did not work. I looked in hosts.allow and hosts.deny, no entries there. The vino server is running. There is nothing in /varlog/messages, dmesg or /var/log/secure, at least nothing I could find related to vino. What else can I check? The conf file in my home folder looks exactly like one on another machine where it is working. forgot to add the message I get when I try it from a remote machine is "The connection to host 192.168.1.100 was closed". So it appears something is actively rejecting the login.

I have tried messing with the few settings in Krfb, but none seem to have any impact. How do I open localhost:5900 and allow VPN tunneling to the host machine?
This is a strange problem, 2 Fedora 11 machines, both Dell's. On machine A, remote desktop is okay. On Machine B, remote desktop display is corrupt/unusable.
However, prior to upgrading to Fedora 11, both machines had Fedora 10, and, remote desktop on Machine A was corrupt and Machine B was okay.
Any idea what happened? Why did the upgrade fix one and break the other? Both machines where upgraded with Pre-upgrade. The two machines are in to separate locations, un-related to each other.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am at a loss. I can not access my work remote desktop via the terminal server client on my wired box running Ubuntu 10.10. My wireless laptop is able to connect right away once I established the VPN connection. The VPN connection is established on both boxes with no problems.
When I tried the Terminal Server Client on my wired boxed, it says it can not establish a connection. Yet my wireless box gets connected immediately!
I check the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and the /etc/resolv.conf to see if there were any differences, but they are essentially the same. When I have the vpnc connection, they both recognize it and I am able to ping the IP address shown when I do a "ifconfig" on the terminal.
What can be the problem? Anything I need to configure on a wired computer versus a wireless one? What else can I check?
I would like to set up a remote desktop connection between two computers over the Internet. I already tested remote desktop within a local network but it's far from secure enough this time. I have recently installed fedora 14 and configured vpn to access my work network. I need to access some windows machines which although I can ping I cannot remote desktop into. When I go to Applications>Internet> Remote Desktop Viewer and put in the machine name (either just the machine name or the FQDN including the domain name) I get an error "Connection to <machinename> was closed".

The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. I want to use cPanel's backup suite to backup our customers accounts but I want to do it so the blank server is mounted to the cPanel server, rather than an FTP backup. If that makes sense. I have my laptop and my desktop. on both machines I have "system-config-firewall 1.2.27" and "iptables" (i believe both come standard on F14?) I kept getting the same message as seen below before realizing perhaps I should check my firewall!
I added a rule for incoming and outgoing traffic on port 22 and was able to get in with no problems at all! however today I can't ssh into anything... I can't use "Remote Desktop Viewer 2.31.4" to vnc into the machine anymore. I can't remember the exact error message at this time, it's something close to "Connection was terminated" or "Unable to connect" I can update this message later.
last night I foolishly uninstalled the system-config-firewall and then uninstalled iptables to see if it was a simple firewall issue.... totally hosed my system <insert smiley!>
After reinstalling and realizing I didn't backup my documents <insert smiley!...again...> I started reinstalling all of my applications. I'm still unable to use ssh and I've tried to ssh my own computer.
