Ubuntu Networking :: Installing - Wifi Dongle Driver ?
Sep 25, 2010
I have just installed Ubuntu on an old laptop for a little bit of programming and to gain some familiarity with linux. Im looking forward to getting to know my way around the OS
Unfortunately, the wireless card (for wifi) on this laptop is broken, so instead I have been using a wifi usb dongle on windows. I am having some trouble installing this dongle in ubuntu, i cant find a driver for it!
Its a "MicroNext MN-WD546J 54M Wireless Adapter"
[url]
I have my modem connected directly at the moment via LAN, and this works no problem, but id like to get it connected wirelessly

I've bought this Blumax USB WLAN adapter 9009 (ID 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501/RT2573 Wireless Adapter). I was specifically happy to read in its specs that it supports Linux [URL].
However, it turned out that the co-packaged CD drive doesn't contain anything Linux-related, and the support page online has gzip package with many files I don't know what to do with [URL]. The online support swallowed my query and hasn't returned any answer.
So, now I am wondering what to do. I don't feel so competent as to be able to compile the drivers on my own, specifying several specific parameters. At least it doesn't compile with default params. how to move forward with this. Apart from returning the device, because I'm too far now from the place where I bought this.

I have a Netgear WG111v2 Wifi dongle, sadly there is no linux drivers for it. The only solution i can find is to use Ndiswrapper.
Will it be a major challenge writing a Linux driver ?
Where should i start ?
NB. I want to write my own driver for the following reasons:
Get a better understanding of Linux Device drivers. Probably, get a better understanding of C/C++ and Linux in general.

I'm trying to get my new Wireless USB dongle to work with Xubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. I've extracted the .rar file that was on the drivers CD that came with the dongle. According to the ReadMe....
The Model Name is: RT2870 Wireless Lan Linux Driver Driver Name: rt2870.o/rt2870.ko Hardware: Ralink 802.1n Wireless LAN Card Description: This is a linux device driver for Ralink RT2870 USB ABGN WLAN Card. My issues:
1. I do not see the driver file anywhere in the folder contents... I suppose that I have to "build" it.
2. In the makefile the chipset is default set to "CHIPSET = 3070" & the folder that holds all the extracted files is named 2008_1128_RT3070_Linux_STA_v2.0.1.0 so I'm confused as to whether this dongle has a 2870 or 3070 chipset inside. Does it matter?
3. Sorry, I'm a bit of a n00bster when it comes to all this, but I'm having some problems with the build instructions. It reads:

I'm running Debian Squeeze on my desktop computer. I have a USB dongle of italian brand Dikom (they just re-brand Chinese products). It has a Zydas ZD1211B chip. Now, according to this, drivers for that chip have been included in all distros for a while. And yet, Debian doesn't want to know about my dongle. Wicd can't connect, the system doesn't seem to do anything with hotplugging when it's inserted, and lspci doesn't list it. What to do (short of threading Ethernet cable from one end of my home to the other)?

I'm looking for a usb dongle which allows an extended wifi range (usually looks like a usb stick with a small antenna on top). Buffalo and Planex have both replied they don't support linux. Alfa makes one but I cannot get it locally.

I have a AWU212n wifi dongle that I would like to use to get a debian computer to connect to connect to the network. There aren't any linux drivers and it seems to need a realtek program to connect. I'm running debian Squeeze. Wine doesn't work to run the installer, I don't know if I copied the realtek program from a windows computer and ran it with wine if it would work then or not.

I just bought a Belkin F7D2101 USB Wifi N dongle, it works great, but every time I start my computer, it's not detected. At least, my network applet shows no network adapter. I have to unplug and plug it back in on another USB port to get detected. Then, my network dmon automatically connects to my wifi network.

My wifi adpater (built into HP laptop) is a intel wifi link 1000 series (b/g/n I think). Looking at some other resources it seems iwlwifi driver is the recommended driver for this card? however it is currently using iwlang. I am constantly experiencing dropped connections with my belkin g router and I am wondering if changing the wireless adapter driver might help, even if it doesn't what is the best driver for this card?

I'm running Maverick Meerkat Ubuntu and I'm trying to figure out how to disable this bcm43xx wifi driver, or something like that. Personally, I have no clue what this is, but someone said that after you install NDISwrapper and its components, you have to disable bcm43xx driver, otherwise the two will conflict.

Im a Linux newbie and am running OpenSuse 11.3 (Gnome, 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop Kernel) and Ive an Asus N13 wifi dongle (linux compatible). I currently connect using my laptopÅ› internal wifi but I bought the dongle due to trouble with weak signal. It came with some sort of code that can be "compiled" but I havent got a clue how to do that (and I have been researching this matter for quite some time now). I then came across a post where someone with the same USB stick created and added only two small files to his filesystem and it worked...for him (maybe becasuse he was on a different Distro )
Ralink RT2870 USB Stick and created the two files mentioned in the post (network_drivers.rules and network_drivers.conf) and placed them in ETC... etc, etc! I rebooted the system but NetworkManager only lists it as "device not ready" ... So now back to square one.

I have just installed Fedora 15 on my desktop machine. It has found my WiFi card and has installed a driver but it is an incorrect driver. How do I remove it and install the correct one? The driver that is installed is a RaLInk RT 2800pci but the one it needs is a RaLink RT2860. This is the driver that I used with the same WiFi card in Fedora 14 using Ndiswrapper. Do I need ndiswrapper this time too?
Clicking on "Connection Information" says that the connection is active and that the driver is rt2800pci but I cannot connect to anything

Here's the situation: I've got an eee pc 901 running Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix. I'm using it to connect to a WPA-encrypted wireless network on a WRT54GL running dd-wrt. It mostly connects and works ok, but sometimes it just stops working for no apparent reason (the netbook still shows itself as connected), but you can't get anywhere until you manually disconnect and reconnect. Other times, it will drop the connection, and then quickly reconnect (or sometimes not). Obviously, this behavior is pretty irritating. At first I thought the problem was with the router, but I checked the logs there and they all seem fine, and other computers on the same router don't have this problem. Looking at "dmesg | tail" on my netbook, I see a lot of instances of the following error, which I'm thinking is probably the problem:
Code:
[11137.762233] ERROR!!! RTMPCancelTimer failed, Timer hasn't been initialize!
[11142.872797] ===>rt_ioctl_giwscan. 4(4) BSS returned, data->length = 440
[11152.883274] ===>rt_ioctl_giwscan. 5(5) BSS returned, data->length = 556
[11152.883529] ==>rt_ioctl_siwfreq::SIOCSIWFREQ[cmd=0x8b04] (Channel=11)
[11163.952056] ERROR!!! RTMPCancelTimer failed, Timer hasn't been initialize!
I searched for that error message and I found this Ubuntu bug report: [URL] that describes symptoms that match mine. In that report, a poster mentions that he compiled and installed a new version of the wireless driver from the Ralink website, and it fixed his problem. Do you think installing a new driver would be good? Or has that updated driver already been added to the kernel since that bug report was filed? I've never compiled a kernel module before.
One other thing, I also see repeated instances of these lines (or similar ones) in dmesg, which look like they could be related.
Code:
[44096.275923] RX DESC f30ca000 size = 2048

When I select the wifi icon on the panel, it just shows "No network devices available". I know my network can be found when I search with my iPhone, so I know there are networks to connect to. So, I checked the drivers, and it informs me that the B43 and STA drivers are not activated. So thats not a big deal, I guess, but when I use my ethernet cord, my laptop doesn't recognize/acknowledge (I'm not sure what the right term would be)it. I'm fairly sure I can't activate these drivers without an internet connection because when I do try, a message pops up saying "failed to fetch" with some long link.
My only guess is that it could be a hardware problem, but I really have no idea. I guess the ethernet problem is my only real problem. Because after I establish and internet connection the the rest is easy to fix.I'm sure its obvious, but I'll go ahead say that I'm a novice ubuntu user. I've only been working with it for about a week, but I'm learning alot.

I have a HP Pavilion dv6-2155dx Entertainment Notebook with Broadcom Wireless Lan Driver.
I didn't want to bother anyone with this, but I just could't find a solution. I was happy using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition, because the wifi was working fine, but I messed everything up dealing with networking in terminal.
So formated and now I have Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition, but that didn't solved my problem at all, because my wifi driver still unfunctional.
Before anything, I tried commands like "dbus restart" and "network restart".
So after reading that I can install by getting ndisgtk and the .inf file, I downloaded the right driver from HP Support's page of my notebook. Extracted the package with Wine (got some error because I wasn't running Win7, of course, but that doesn't matter.).
I did this: [url]
And this is my final result:[url]
