Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting Static IP Wireless For Dell XPS 8100

May 20, 2010

I have read this: [URL] I have been trying to set a static IP address for my Dell XPS 8100. It has a wired and wireless connection. DHCP worked fine for both of them. My goal is to set up Samba and some other things that require a static IP. My /etc/network/interfaces file looks like this:

[Code]....

If I take the eth0 interface down, I can connect to the internet sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.154 down Which is really puzzling because I think that I am setting both interfaces in the exact same way. What am I missing?

Ubuntu Networking :: PnP PCMCIA Card For Dell Inspiron 8100 In 10.04?

Oct 14, 2010

I finally got around to trying Ubuntu 10.04 on a "decommissioned" Dell Inspiron 8100 1.2Ghz P3 512MB RAM 40GB HD... and Ubuntu is absolutely AMAZING compared to Windows! I'm a Mac guy and honestly Ubuntu gives 90% of the Mac OS GUI and 0% of the "brain damage" of WinBLOWS...

The only thing missing in this laptop is WiFi which I want to do via one of the PCMCIA slots since the mini-PCI is a combo 10/100 network + v.90 modem card... and I need to keep the Ethernet port and fax modem capabilities.

What are the best "Plug n Play" PCMCIA WiFi cards for our "G" and "N" WPA2 ONLY Airport Express WiFi network? I'm new to Linux so I'd really like to avoid editing and replacing system files and drivers if possible to get a PCMCIA card working. I'd also like a card that works in WinXP Pro SP3 since this laptop is dual boot capable.

Fedora Networking :: Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Not Working On Acer Travelmate 8100 12?

Dec 29, 2009

I have installed Fedora 12 on my laptop and subsequently spent most of the day trying to get the wireless connection to work. Looks like I am not alone with Wireless issues Through searching and reading today I think the problem lies with the fact that the wireless on/off switch is not working. Under Windows, when I press the wifi toggle switch it starts flashing orange. I haven't managed to get it to do anything under Fedora.

Ubuntu Networking :: Dell Precision 390 Network Card Not Connecting?

Mar 29, 2010

So I bought a used Dell Precision 390 Workstation and installed Ubuntu 9.04 on it. Everything seems to work fine, except for the built-in network card. Well, the graphics don't really work right, either, but I rather expected that, and I'll get to it later.

Anyway, when I boot Ubuntu and try to get on the internet, it says I'm not connected. When I open Network Tools, in the "Devices" tab, I get three Network device options: Loopback Interface, Ethernet Interface (eth0), and Unknown Interface (pan0). When I click on the ethernet device option, it shows me the hardware address of the interface, that it has multicast enabled, and that it is "Active", but I get no IP address.

Is there something really stupid that I'm missing? Do I need to do something special the first time I hook up an ethernet cable? I don't seem to remember having to do that on other Ubuntu boxes.

Ubuntu Networking :: Static IP On Wireless Laptop On 9.10?

Apr 24, 2010

I have been googleing for the last hour and a half trying to find the easiest way to set up a static IP for my laptop's wireless connection.The most promising link I found required me to delete the network manager but I do not want to do this as I often take my laptop with me so I need to be able to connect to new wlan easily. I just want a static IP so I can set up port forwarding.Is there a equivalent process to windows XP where you just manually assign a local address like 192.168.2.9 or something like that? I tried setting it up through the network manager but later read that it doesn't work for encrypted connections.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Static IP With 10.10 On Laptop

Dec 22, 2010

I'll be frank. I recently switched to Ubuntu 10.10 to become more familiar with linux as I set up a website, but I'm also an avid user in a private torrent tracker. Coming from windows to linux, I don't know how to properly set up a static IP address from my wirelessly connected laptop. Other walk-throughs for setting up a static IP seem to focus on desktop machines and not a wirelessly connection machine. These walk-throughs also tell me to delete Network manager, which really messes up the ability to find connections for a wireless laptop. I also have two homes I go back and forth with, so I'd simply like the ability to just emit a static IP, and for my main networks to allow me to connect, and upload/download from it easily.

Ubuntu Networking :: Need Static Ip On Wireless Network Card

Mar 15, 2010

I want my Ubuntu desktop to have a static ip-address, i have altered the interfaces file to the below and also filled the info regarding my wireless network card but still every time I reboot the desktop gets the ip 10.42.43.1, HOW is that possible???

I use a apple time capsule router, I want my desktop to run a apache server thats why I need the static ip. I also want the static ip to be set on the wireless network interface. I have an old laptop with an internal Intel pro 2200 card so there should not be a driver problem.

This i my interfaces config code...

To be on the sure side to get this to work I have configured my router(DHCP) to give my wireless-HWaddress the ip of 10.0.1.15, STILL the ubuntu desktop starts with the false address above.

Ubuntu Networking :: Static Wireless IP With Network Manager?

Jul 3, 2011

I want to set up a static IP on my laptop that connects via wireless to my home network. I have 11.04 installed on my laptop. When I try to use the manual IPv4 setting in the network manager the save option gets greyed out. I tried to edit the /etc/network/interfaces file but all the examples I could find on the net refer to eth0. I tried replacing this with wlan0 but this did not work. I tried installing wicd but I kept getting "Bad Password" errors even though I know the password is correct. A number of people recommended uninstalling network manager to get wicd to work but many other posts said that uninstalling network manager didn't help so I didn't want to go ahead and uninstall unnecessarily. Besides I figure if Ubuntu is distributed with network manager there must be a reason for having it. So what do I do to get a static IP address for the client on a wireless connection?

1. I went to network manager and selected "Connection Information" On the information window I saw the following:

IPv4
IP Address: 192.168.1.6 (This is the item I wanted to change and make static)
Broadcast Address: 192.168.1.255
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

[code].....

2. I went to network manager and selected "Edit Connections"
3. I selected the wireless tab and then the wireless network I wanted to edit
4. I clicked on the edit button and then I clicked on the IPv4 settings tab.
5. I changed method from Automatic (DHCP) to Manual

[code]....

How would I configure the wireless card statically, e. g. by editing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0?

This would be something like :

DEVICE=wlan0
BOOTPROTO=static
ONBOOT=yes
IPADDR=192.168.1.252
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ESSID=my_essid
CHANNEL=3

But I don't know how to define the WEP key here.

Ubuntu Networking :: Not Connecting To Wireless

Mar 28, 2010

I recently installed the latest version of Kubuntu in a dual boot system with Windows XP on a Dell laptop. The dell laptop has a broadcom wireless device, and I was able to set up the driver and get wireless working. Then I booted into windows XP to make a whole bunch of updates/driver installations, and when I booted back into Kubuntu it would not connect to the wireless network. I am pretty sure the device is still active, because it picks up on the wireless networks in the area. But KWallet does not open to ask for my password on booting. Something is not set right, but I can't tell what.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Rt61 PCI Wireless: Freeze Upon Shutdown With Static IP Configuration

Jun 24, 2009

I have one desktop PC I'd like to use as a jukebox. It's installed in the basement as a black box, with only SSH access, and it has got a minimal CentOS 5.3 install with MPD and NCMPC. It's connected to the hi-fi in the basement, so I can stream music to it when I'm downstairs. Since I didn't want to use cables everywhere, I bought a PCI wireless card, with a RT2561 chip.

Until recently this card worked OK with Linux. Recent kernel version even have out-of-the-box support for it, except of course you still have to download the firmware from the Ralinktech website.

I gave the thing a static IP configuration by editing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0, interface went up fine, I can ping the machine and SSH into it OK. Now the only problem is, when I do a shutdown -h now, the machine "hangs" while trying to bring wlan0 down. (In case you wonder: I temporarily attached a monitor to it, since wanting to know what goes on while shutting down in an SSH session is a chicken-and-egg situation :)). I actually have to hard-reboot it (by pressing RESET).

Ubuntu Networking :: No Connecting With Wired Or Wireless?

Apr 1, 2010

in short : installed 9.10 on a dell inspiron 600m which has a broadcom bcm4401 ethernet and an intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B mini PCI. At this point, i'm not too picky about which one works (meaning neither of them currently work). nm-tool seems to pick up on both : the broadcom (eth0) is using the b44 driver, State is unavailable; the intel (eth1) is using the ipw2100 driver, it's State is disconnected.

i have encryption turned off, and the wireless sees a number of AP's (including mine).

i'm jumping off the good ship m$ and determined to make this work!

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Router Connecting ?

Jun 21, 2010

I have a computer running Ubuntu, and a MacBook Pro. I need to buy a decently cheap wireless router that I can hook up to my Ubuntu so that it will send wifi signals and I can use the wifi to go online with my MacBook Pro. I was about to get one today, but remembered how Ubuntu is picky about working with things like that. I'm only going to be using it to get signals around the house which isn't that big at all.

So what would be the cheapest and decently efficient wireless routers that I can use which Ubuntu will cooperate with?

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To Wireless In Kubuntu Lucid?

May 14, 2010

I'm having trouble connecting to our home wireless network in Kubuntu Lucid. I was hoping someone here might be able to help. I can connect with no problem in Ubuntu and Xubuntu; I'm having difficulty in Kubuntu only. It might just be me being unfamiliar with the KDE network management app, I don't know.

1. I click on the network icon in the system tray, and choose "manage connections". I click on the "wireless" tab, and click "add".

2. I enter the name of our network in the SSID field (our router doesn't broadcast its SSID; however, if I click "scan" the neighbors' wireless networks do appear in the list) under the "wireless" tab, then I go the "wireless security" tab, and choose "WPA/WPA2 - personal" and enter the password. I click OK.

3. Now when I right-click on the network icon and choose "create network connection", the new connection for our network that I just made shows up in the list, but it has an icon showing a pen on paper instead of the broadcasting signal icon that appears next to the neighboring networks. It also says my connection is "insecure", even though I chose WPA and put in the password. (Neighbors' networks do say WPA, WEP,etc.)

4. I select my network connection that I created above, and click connect, and nothing happens. No connection is created. how the KDE network app works; I've used mostly XFCE and GNOME in the past, but I've heard good things about Kubuntu Lucid and really would like to take it for a spin. However, this computer has only a wireless connection, so I really need to get it working.
