Ubuntu Networking :: Dell Precision 390 Network Card Not Connecting?

Mar 29, 2010

So I bought a used Dell Precision 390 Workstation and installed Ubuntu 9.04 on it. Everything seems to work fine, except for the built-in network card. Well, the graphics don't really work right, either, but I rather expected that, and I'll get to it later.

Anyway, when I boot Ubuntu and try to get on the internet, it says I'm not connected. When I open Network Tools, in the "Devices" tab, I get three Network device options: Loopback Interface, Ethernet Interface (eth0), and Unknown Interface (pan0). When I click on the ethernet device option, it shows me the hardware address of the interface, that it has multicast enabled, and that it is "Active", but I get no IP address.

Is there something really stupid that I'm missing? Do I need to do something special the first time I hook up an ethernet cable? I don't seem to remember having to do that on other Ubuntu boxes.

Hardware :: Dell Precision T1500 Sound Card Not Found?

May 20, 2010

I am trying to get RHEL4.7 work fully on a dell precision t1500. Everything is working fine except for the sound card. in the specifications it says it has an "integrated High Definition Audio (Rev 1.0 Specification) implemented with a two-chip audio solution comprised of the ADI 1984a High Definition Audio CODEC and the ICH10's integrated AC97/High Definition digital controller"

RHEL4.7 can not detect the soundcard. running system-config-soundcard return no sound devices were found.

lspci returns the following:

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Unable To Install Graphic Card Driver For Dell Precision T3500?

Jul 28, 2010

I have recently installed Centos. During the installation, I noticed that only sound was being tested during the installation. Once everything has been installed successfully. I can run Centos with no problem. However, when I tried to switch from one window (browser) to another. The display was slow. Thus, I suspected the driver for the graphic card of my PC is not being installed successfully. When I type /sbin/lspci | grep VGA in the terminal, I get the following output:

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 06fd (rev a1)
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 06fd (rev a1)

Then, I went to the dell support & driver site to download the driver. In the readme file, it is suggested to install dkms first before installing the graphics driver by typing rpm -ivh dkms-2.1.0.1-1.noarch.rpm

I managed to install the dkms without any error.However, when I use rpm to install the graphics driver as suggested by the readme file:
rpm -ivh dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64.rpm

I get the following errors: error: Failed dependencies:
libX11.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64
libXext.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64[code]....

Since the above errors may be related to the missing packages then I use yum provides and install to find the missing packages. Even I try to install all the matched packages, i still cant install the driver for my graphic card. To be honest, i am not very sure whether I am doing the right things or not. how to solve this slow display problem when switching from one application to another.

Hardware :: Dell Precision T7400 Can't See 2TB Drive In BIOS

Oct 1, 2010

We have a RHEL5 box with a 2.6.18 kernel up and running (no RAID in use, but the SAS controller is enabled in the BIOS). To expand the storage, we bought a 2TB drive to add to the machine. Currently the setup is like this:

SATA-0 => DVD-rom
SATA-1 => DVD-rom
SATA-2 => empty
HD-0 => old hard disk
HD-1 => old hard disk
HD-2 => new 2TB drive
HD-3 => empty

The BIOS doesn't seem to have any way to list the drive on any of the HD ports, only the SATA ports, so I'm not sure if the drive is being recognized or not. fdisk -l doesn't seem to recognize the 2 TB drive.

I'm going to try reordering the drive ports and try the drive in another machine, but I'm baffled here...

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Red Hat 5.5 Freezes On A Dell Precision M4400 Laptop

Apr 30, 2010

I have problems with my laptop which runs well until it decides to freeze and it either shuts down or I have to turn it off. After I restart the system there is no hdd check to signal that something really wrong happened. I suspect the nVidia driver for the Quadro FX 770M video card is responsible but I am not sure. Also, firefox sometimes runs sluggish (maybe flash is causing something to overcharge?) and often times the computer freezes when I am using firefox. The funny thing is that all my heavy simulations are not causing problems and often times they use 10GB of swap with no complains. When the laptop freezes I see two keyboard lights flashing intermittently. How can I figure out what is going on? I mean are there any log files where I can look for something or can I setup a log procedure to detect the cause of this problem?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Belkin Gigabit Ethernet ExpressCard Not Seen On Dell Precision M6500 With 5.5

Jul 20, 2010

Actually, the title I was looking for was Belkin Gigabit Ethernet ExpressCard not seen on Dell Precision M6500 with CentOS 5.5 _when system boots with no link on this card_. When I boot this system with a cable connected to the Ethernet port, the card shows up (dmesg, lspci 0e:00.0 and ifconfig). When I boot it with nothing connected, it's like it doesn't exist. I know I could make it work with a loopback plugged in at all times, but am looking for a more graceful solution. Here are messages logs from when it's recognized

Ubuntu Networking :: Dell Wireless Card Very Slow

Jul 31, 2010

Its a Dell Inspiron 1300 Laptop. 1.8GHz Pentium M, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, and some form of Intel graphics. The wireless card in question is a Dell TrueMobile 1300, with a BCM4306 Rev02 chip.Installed 10.04 LTS, updated it all on wired connection, then enabled the bcm43legacy drivers that were in the Hardware Drivers box, and it all worked fine. First thing I did was try to install some media codecs, and noticed they went slow on wifi, and swapped to the wired connection again. I thought it might just be slow servers, but I instantly got an extra 200kbps just by wiring. I try browsing the web, but its extremely slow and sometimes Firefox stops responding. I then begin to install WINE, and it complete stops loading, so I watch the net traffic when I hit a search in FF. Nothing goes out. I hit it a few times more, and finally it'll send something and receive something, but still VERY SLOWLY.

Its not a local problem, as other computers and laptops can connect fine with good speeds. Just wondering if this is normal, or if there's any other drivers to try, or if there's something I'm doing wrong here. I'm kind of a linux noob, but I'm for defs not a computer noob. But since I can't be guaranteed the drivers work with my specific card, who knows?

Fedora Networking :: Connecting Home Network To Work Network

Sep 20, 2010

Currently my office use a Cisco Firewall which will only allow the ANYCONNECT utility to do the vpn connection. I found a Linux utility (OpenConnect) which will do the same thing, but allow me more flexibility with my networking needs.What I ultimately would like to have is to have a switch that I can connect any network device into it and be connected to the office. IE (my IP Work Phone and Computer) Currently I have is a computer with fedora 13 and two network cards eth0 (home network - connected to a router) and eth1 which I would like to connect a switch to. OpenConnect communicates fine and I can see the work network from the Fedora machine. It creates a vpn0 tun/tap device and I don't know how to pass communication to/from the eth1 device.

Do I try to iptables the ports for the phone and services I need on the computer? Or do I build bridge; and If I do what am I bridging. I have tried making a bridge from eth1 to vpn0 which reply's with unsupported device or something like that.Unfortunately my network skills are bit limited and my office says "it can't be done". Their solution is for me to buy a ASA5505 (or something device) and have a static IP. I would have to make it work as my router and even then it will only DHCP 10 ip addresses; which will cause a shortage of IP addresses in the house.

Ubuntu Networking :: PnP PCMCIA Card For Dell Inspiron 8100 In 10.04?

Oct 14, 2010

I finally got around to trying Ubuntu 10.04 on a "decommissioned" Dell Inspiron 8100 1.2Ghz P3 512MB RAM 40GB HD... and Ubuntu is absolutely AMAZING compared to Windows! I'm a Mac guy and honestly Ubuntu gives 90% of the Mac OS GUI and 0% of the "brain damage" of WinBLOWS...

The only thing missing in this laptop is WiFi which I want to do via one of the PCMCIA slots since the mini-PCI is a combo 10/100 network + v.90 modem card... and I need to keep the Ethernet port and fax modem capabilities.

What are the best "Plug n Play" PCMCIA WiFi cards for our "G" and "N" WPA2 ONLY Airport Express WiFi network? I'm new to Linux so I'd really like to avoid editing and replacing system files and drivers if possible to get a PCMCIA card working. I'd also like a card that works in WinXP Pro SP3 since this laptop is dual boot capable.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Connect To Internet: Dell 1397 Wireless Card

Feb 25, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 computer. I boot into Ubuntu with a flash drive. When I boot, I cannot connect to a wireless network. No available networks are displayed (and I know my router is on) and the Network Manager icon displays no bars. I suspect that the Dell Wireless card (having a Broadcom BCM-4312 chipset) needs a driver. I have tried to intstall both of the restricted drivers (BCM STA and 43xx drivers), but with no success. I have run lspci in Terminal, and got many lines of text. Here are the lines that look relevant to me:

Code: 09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (rev 13) 0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01) In Windows 7, everything is just fine. In Ubuntu, my wired connection works like a charm, but is not really accessible. Basically, I have to connect to wireless in Ubuntu or I have no reason for having it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Dell 1397 Wireless Card Not Working With Live USB

Mar 9, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 64-bit. It has a Dell 1397 Wireless card with Broadcom BCM 4312 hardware. This is proven by running lspci in Terminal. I downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit and burned a disc of it. I used System>Administration>USB Startup Disc Creator to make a Live USB from a 4GB flash drive. I plugged it in and my computer booted into Ubuntu with no trouble. The only problem is that I can't connect to my wireless network. The problem is that no matter how I install the Broadcom STA driver, it just says that the driver is activated but not actively in use. I've used Synaptic Package Manager, Jockey, and even Terminal. I've tried running
Code: sudo modprobe wl
in Terminal, but nothing seems to happen. In Ubuntu, my computer acts as though it has no wireless card, but the wired connection is fine (except for the inconvenience of connecting with a cable). In Windows 7, the wireless connection is fine.

Ubuntu Networking :: Dell Latitude CPx Dynex Wireless Card Not Working

Mar 18, 2011

I have a 10 year old Dell Latitude CPx that has no ethernet or modem ports, and the only way to connect to the internet is the Dynex Wireless G DX-BNBC PCMCIA card. It came with Windows 98, and I put Xubuntu on it for a while. I believe it was Xubuntu 8 or 9. Back then I had no clue what to do whatsoever, so after a couple weeks removed it and put Windows 2000 on it. It worked, I used it for a while, but it was slow and 2000 took up a lot of space on the 12gb hard drive after all the updates. I left it forgotten and gathering dust for the past year.

Then a few days ago I discovered Lubuntu 10.10, and from what I've seen so far it is definitely a lot more compact and faster than 2000. However, the wireless card still won't work. It's somewhat recognized, because whenever I unplug it and plug it in a bubble pops up saying "you've been disconnected from the network"... which is odd, since it never says I'm connected, and says that the firmware is missing for this card. Anyway, I discovered something this time. By running "lspci -nn | grep -i 14e4":

CentOS 5 Networking :: Qlogic 4062 Card Connecting To MSA 2312i - 5.4

Oct 27, 2010

I am trying to setup a blade server that has a QLOGIC 4062 mezzanine card to handle the iscsi traffic coming from an HP MSA 2312i SAN. I cannot seem to figure out how to get the HBA to talk to the SAN. Just to ensure the SAN was setup OK, I used the onboard netextreme NIC w/iSCSI to connect to the SAN with iscsiadm. This all works no problem. BUT, I bought the mezzanine cards to take this load of my NICs.

I know that the OS sees the two ports on the mezzanine card as dmesg shows them. This is my first time configuring a separate HBA on a blade system, so I'm kinda lost what to do with them. I have entries in the modprobe.conf file for eth2 and eth3 aliased to qla4xxx. What I am not sure about is the config for each eth2/3 device. If I ifconfig my device to the specific ip and subnet/netmask my SAN is on, I can get any response from the SAN.

Also I would have expected iscsiadm -m iface to pick up on the qlogic devices, but they don't show up in the ifaces directory. I tried to manually create an iface file for each, and it seems to be ok with that, but when I try to discover targets, I get communication errors. (I am compiling a file with all the outputs from various commands and errors, and will put them here once I have them).

What I don't understand is the process of setting up an HBA. I am quite able to setup iscsi over the regular NICs, been doing that for a while, but these HBAs have me stumped.

I also installed the qlogic qla4xxx driver and SANSurfer, but SANsurfer didn't see the HBAs. I think this was due to the age of the sansurfer software...other people have reported this as well.

Fedora Networking :: Unable To Use Dell 1395 Wireless Card On 11?

I am trying to get the Dell 1395 (Broadcom) wireless card to work on my PC and having a nightmare. I am certain the bulk of the reason is my inexperience with Linux but all the same it is causing me no end of problems.I have found the following sites which suggest ways to get it working

[URL]

Unfortunately I can't get either method to work on my Fedora 11 installation. I don't mean that I complete the steps only to find it doesn't work, I mean I can't even complete the required steps because I appear to be doing something wrong or be missing a crucial command tool.When I try to run the broadcom method I get as far as the make (or make clean) commands.

The make clean results in:

Code:

KBUILD_NOPEDANTIC=1 make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd` clean
make[1]: gcc: Command not found
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/kernels/2.6.30.10-105.2.23.fc11.i586'

If I try the other method I get into problems when I get to the ndiswrapper section as the install can't find ndiswrapper-common.

I have install 64bit version of Fedora 12 on a new Dell Inspiron 1545 with a Dell 1397 wireless card. It actually uses a Broadcom BCM4312 chip.

I have install the following rpms:

Code:
broadcom-wl-5.10.91.9.3-1.fc12.noarch
kmod-wl-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64-5.10.91.9.3-3.fc12.11.x86_64
kmod-wl-5.10.91.9.3-3.fc12.11.x86_64
code....

what I do not understand is the state of the card as unavailable. how I can activate this card?
