Because of some glitches I've experienced with Knetwork Manager as of recent versions of Kubuntu I want to use WICD but I know they can get a bit botched juggling them around. I remember getting it right once using a wired connection ot install but would like ot be clear in advance of doing this tomorrow.

1. after each reboot i have to start wicd manually from su. any solution to get it loaded automatically?
2. also as i stopped nm, i have no network shortcut in taskbar, anyway wicd icon can be integrated in taskbar?
I'm trying to use wicd instead of network manager because I want a "no fuss" way to use wireless on wmii. However, wicd will not find any networks unless network-manager has been run and has connected to a network since startup. If it hasn't connected to a wireless network, the wicd will find no networks, and iwlist won't provide a list of networks either.
This seems to mean that network-manager is doing something to the interface when it connects that needs to be done to make it usable, but I'm not sure what it is or how exactly to find out. I do know that the interface (eth2) will not appear in ifconfig if network manager hasn't connected, which I assume means that it hasn't been brought up. ifconfig eth2 up makes it show up, but I still can't connect with wicd. What can I do?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, generic 2.6.32-22 kernel, MacBook 5,5 using the Broadcom STA driver. (more details below)

I have a laptop ubuntu 9.10 installed and desktop linux mint installed 10. the Wicd would give error bad password and the network manager would just loop and keep asking for key. This worked for me rename the wireless network (ssid) only one word and no caps and it fixed both problems lol!! I guess they don't like multi word {SSid
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had to reinstall WICD to fix another problem, and now it always asks me for my admin password every time I start up.After I enter in the password, it doesn't work.I have tried removing WICD and reinstalling it but that didn't help.I tried searching for a cure to this problem but none of them seemed to have been SOLVED. One post said he solved it but he wasn't clear on HOW he solved it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed 9.10 Karmic 32 bit on a laptop here that has an Atheros 2413 card in it. I could see the network and tried to connect. After 30 seconds of attempting to connect, it simply says disconnected.
Thinking network manager was to blame, I installed WICD and rebooted. I tried to connect to my network, but it came back with unable to get IP address. Okay, fine. So I check my iBook and Ubuntu work laptop both are connected fine. I tried other drivers within the WICD preferences wext, ndiswrapper, madwifi nothing worked. I power cycled the router thinking something might have been borked with my wireless but it's fine.
Running ubuntu 10.10 here, brand new install/machine.USB wireless based on a realtek chipset. I spent a few days trying ndiswrapper, and now have the native driver up and running. I can see the network(s) but can't connect. If I encrypt the network, i get a bad password error from wicd network manager (All encypt. methods- Weps, WPA etc) If I open my wireless up with no encryption, i receive a "can't obtain IP" error.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just setup my mother's desktop PC (HP P6510F) which has a wired connection to the internet, with 64-bit openSUSE-11.3 KDE-4.4.4 desktop. Her PC also has a wireless device, so I decided to set that up. I have it working with the internet (using knetworkmanager), but I have to launch knetworkmanager from a terminal each boot, as it is not launched every boot by default.
What is the 'proper' way to have knetworkmanager launched every boot in KDE4 ? (I can hack at this, but if there is a preferred/recommended method, I would rather use that). I suspect no more detail is needed, but in case one is curious: Her wireless is:

I thought to uninstall Gnome Network manager since it was always asking for to connect with wireless internet but it was working fine with wired internet.I uninstalled it and installed wicd. and then for some unknown reasons the internet disappeared.Kindly let me know How can i get back network manager without having internet and make internet work on my computer.I did searched a lot on Ubuntu forums using somone's else computer but no success.So if you let me know how to approach the problem in right manner it shal be great .
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 11, and just did an update of the system. It looks like there was an update to the package that takes care of knetwork manager. In the past, I have played around with it, but it hasn't met my needs, so I went back to nm-applet, which works fine.
I'm curious about the update, and would like to see if it works. However, knetwork manager won't start as there is another network manager already running (there is a message about this everytime I log in). I can easily kill nm-applet, but logging out and back in causes it to reload, and I still get the message from knetwork manager. So here are my questions:
1) With the update, is knetwork manager stable and robust enough for regular use (the docs for F11 said it wasn't upon F11 release, so included gnome's network manager as the default network manager)?
2) How do I get knetwork manager to work (I presume this means I turn off Gnome's network management and switch to knetwork management)?
I understand that the K (KDE) network manager is a KDE app but does it actually function in runlevel 3? By that I mean does it allow wireless connections to work? I've been trying to do this but can't. I have a need to while in KDE to sometime init 3 and while in runlevel 3 I need my wireless to work. I havent figured out if Knetwork manager still functions outside of KDE or if I need to just use ifup traditional.
I did search the forum for threads related to knetwork manager and did not see anything related to this so I hope someone can assist me. Also if I do need to use ifup traditional method, is there anything specail I need to do so that it works without issues such as, uninstall knetwork manager or something else? I ask this because my previous attempts at using ifup (by switching to it from YAST) end up making my wireless not work. I can scan and find my network but after entering my creds it doesnt do anything. I managed to get it to work once somehow but after a shutdown and reboot it no longer worked. Just incase you need to know, I'm running Suse11.4 KDE 4.6, my wireless module I believe is a iwlagn or something like that. My laptop which Suse is running on is a Toshiba A665-S6086 core i3, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD.
I have installed Vbox on 2 systems running Opensuse 11.3 and both have experienced knetworkmanager failure. Knetworkmanager failed after a failed wake up from sleep mod, which also had been working perfectly until this failure. I am wondering if the vbox kernel modules could be causing this isssue. To temporarily fix the problem I am running my network connections through yast networks setting . (which uses the traditional ifup method and everything is working)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a minor problem with Knetwork-manager. When I boot up, it won't connect to my wireless router automatically. I have to right-click the taskbar icon, disable wireless, then enable wireless, then it connects fine.It remembers the password fine and once it's connected, it's flawless. It's just the minor issue of having to effectively 'switch the internet on' rather than it just being connected when I turn on my laptop.
I'm using Opensuse 11.2, KDE 4.3.1 (didn't have this issue with 11.1). I've tried the latest Kubuntu (9.10) and knetwork-manager worked flawlessly but I didn't like the rest of the OS so I came back to Opensuse If I restart, suspend or hibernate it usually connects okay, it just seems to be when I boot from 'cold'.
I've tried nm-applet but same problem. I also tried wicd but it didn't really like my system. I've changed my wireless router recently as well with no change, so I don't think it's that. As I say it's a minor problem, it's not really an issue for me to turn it on each time but it would be nice to clear it up. I've googled and searched since 11.2 was released but haven't found any answers and my linux skills are still a bit lacking.

I am on the Internet with this machine as I am typing using the older "ifup" method. I am having great difficulty connecting to the Internet when I use knetwork manger though. The strange part is when I am connected to my router with knetwork manager, I can log into my Router, but I can not get to any web-page/ping any outside address.

I did a fresh install of OpenSuSE 11.3 KDE 64-bit on my new laptop. Worked like a charm. But I brought it with me to work without connecting it to a wi-fi and now the network manager doesn't want to start when I'm back in range of my home connection. Also, whenever I try to launch KNetworkManager, it won't load up a window and I still can't connect. This is even disabling the Ethernet port also.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently put Linux on a Thinkpad T40 I got. The wireless card works out of the box--I can see nearby networks. However, I can't connect to mine. network-manager would try (spin spin spin), fail, ask for the password, and then go back to the beginning and repeat indefinitely. This happened to me on a different computer, and on that one all I had to do was use wicd instead of network-manager. So I installed wicd, but it's not working either--it hangs at "Obtaining IP address".
I've found many, many threads with people who had the same problem, but none of their fixed worked for me.
I also tried to get wifi going manually, using this guide, but that didn't work.
I am trying to use nm-applet with Arch/Openbox/tint2. I can't use wicd-gtk because wicd won't work with ad-hoc networks. I have tested nm-applet in Ubuntu/Openbox/tint2 and it works fine.

These problems just started the last couple of days but I have been using Lucid 10.04 for a month now. My wireless Signal varies in strength wildly. I sitting at home, not 20 feet from my router. I never had these problems before Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04. I am running both Network Manager and Wicd.
Errors:
1. Wicd states "Wrong Password" which is not true.
2. Dropping off-line for no reason, sometimes 3 or 4 times a minute and sometimes it works fine for hours.

In the early days Ubuntu Netbook Remix worked well for me. But this has been discarded, and the "one size fits all" Ubuntu had become slow and cumbersome. So..... onto my post. Opensuse is working well. The install went beautifully.
It detected the Wireless Internet and I am able to get on line. I also need to share the Internet connection to a desktop. This is done via a small network switch. Thus far I cannot do this. I tried to use ifup to configure a static ip but this busted my Wireless configuration. I went back to knetwork manager. Then I tried to set up the wired network using knetwork manager and under IPV4 "share" the connection. But this blanks out any possiblity of a static address and substitutes dhcp. My desktop cannot ping the this dhcp address. Ubuntu had this thing called Firestarter? - from memory. This configured the system to sharing the network.
After I install 11.2 clean from the ISO, I would like to update ONLY knetworkmanager, and not all of KDE. I would like to use zypper commands similar to the one below, which work for KDE. However, I would like the syntax for only knetwork manager and not all of KDE sample for KDE:

how to switch to it because i keep getting my connection dropped with the default network manager. he said to make sure i was plugged in via ethernet, purge network manager - then apt-get WICD. the problem is, not even ethernet works once network manager is purged.
so - before i try this i wanna know, can i just download WICD before hand, then purge network manager, then install WICD. OR, can i just install WICD now, then once i purge network manger it will move over to WICD as the default?

it usually happens (or at least more often) when im streaming a live feed from a website, and it doesnt reset itself unless i turn the computer OFF (not restart) and back on
basically what happens is, with both the network manager and WICD - the wireless just cuts out and stops detecting any network at all, disconnected. i have tried terminating the process and restarting the applications via terminal or run command; i dont know what to do it just keeps happening. sometimes it wont happen for 2 days, sometimes it happens five times in one day.
it really seems to be affected by what im doing on, sometimes i'll have multiple videos going and it starts to chug, and i know when its gonna happen - wifi cuts out. it doesnt DROP, it just stops working, detecting networks.
like i said, even restarting doesnt fix this. i have to quit the application, turn the computer on and off - then boom its right back on when it comes back.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a rtl8192e card and the drivers and everything are set up properly. I can not connect to WEP encrypted networks using network manager. I can however connect using iwconfig and dhcpcd. I uninstalled network manager and installed WICD and have the same problem. It will connect to the access point when it is configured with WPA, but not WEP which we need to use for the other computer. In the status bar of WICD it looks like it is trying to configure the encryption as WPA no matter what I select. I've looked in the config files for WICD and can't see anything that would do it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI replaced the trusty old aironet wireless card with a trendnet scanbus wireless card so I could secure my home wireless with wpa encryption. It uses the ath5k module, and the wireless is set up with wicd. The issue is that if I stop browsing for about 2 minutes, the next time I start to browse, it will disconnect, then reconnect no problem. I don't know if this is supposed to be a feature, but it is sure annoying. Is there a tweak somewhere to stop this? The other option would be to use ndiswrapper and use windows drivers, but I'd rather explore tweaking, if possible. If I have to use ndiswrapper, would I have to rmmod ath5k first, or would it be ok to use ndiswrapper directly?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a dell insp 1545 windows7-ubuntu9.10 dual boot. the linux os would not activate the wireless network function in the network manager (but the cricket broadband was being detected and was in fact active). well, i did a little looking around and found another network mgr (wicd?, i think it's called... or something like that) and installed it. IT is working, but now the cricket broadband is down, which is my mainstay internet connection right now. i'm thinking that maybe it's got something to do w/the flipflop.sh function but that's just a wild guess.
