I have just done a new install of the latest opensuse 32bit and for some reason I cannot connect to the internet, when I click on mange connections the vpn tag is highlighted and all the other tabs are grayed out and I cannot select them. So I can't setup a internet connection wired or wireless. I was just using Kubuntu and did not have this problem. My card is broadcom.

The only guide I found regarding this (I must admit, I didn't have much time to put into research), was dating back to 2005, and although doable, seemed somewhat confusing. Getting to the point: is there a way (maybe a standalone program, or some kind of plugin) to share a connection?

I keep losing internet connectivity from within OpenSuse. I've had ubuntu/kubuntu beforeand never had a problem. I installed opensuse and now after a few minutes of browsing I'll lose my internet connection.I also dual boot into winXP without any problems.I noticed that when the connection is lost I can't even reach my router - which is where I'm getting the wired connection from.So it's not just the outside internet but the local network too. It only happens within opensuse.

I have BIG troubles trying to set up wired internet connection in Ubuntu! To be able to connect to the internet I have to enter my MAC address, 2 IPs, netmask and 2 DNS address. When I try to edit the default internet connection eth0 with my correct information, the minute I enter my MAC address and save the changes the network manager creates new internet connection with wrong data and use it instead! I can't select the correct internet connection from the top bar where the internet icon is, because it is just not there. The only connection that I can choice is the new default one with the wrong data! If I try to create new separate internet connection with my correct data the same thing happens! The moment I enter my MAC address and save it, the internet connection disapears from the list of internet connections in the internet area in the top bar and I can't select it. I tried googling it, but with no luck I think that if I set up my connection trough the terminal everything will be ok

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an old Compaq Presario v2000 that recently had Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it. The wired internet worked when it was installed, but the wireless didn't. I tried to download the drivers for it and it failed everytime. I did an update thinking that the update might fix the wireless, but it didn't, it actually made my wired connection stop working. So now I have a newly installed OS on the laptop, and I can't do anything on it because there is no way to get any internet.

I set the modem back to PPPoE the problem was with the DNS server of the ISP so using ifup i set the dns t 8.8.8.8 (google) the connection is back , but when i set the modem back as a bridge slow internet does the router know that my dns is 8.8.8.8 or i should set the dns on the router ? I can't see an option to set the dns on the router ( i just enter my username and password from the isp to use PPPoE mode ) by the way i called the isp support they kept telling me to restart , i told them i did but i never restarted my pc . I'm sure if i tell them i'm running linux they will blame the os !
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've installed opensuse 11.2 on an old IBM thinkpad. The install went without a hitch and when I got to the desktop I inserted my Dlink DWL-G132 wireless USB adapter. Opensuse immediately recognised that a wireless device was attached and I could see my wireless network listed. I entered my WPA password and was able to connect to my routers configuration page by entering 192.168.0.1 in the URL bar of firefox. For some reason I am unable to navigate to any webpage. When I enter a URL firefox acts as though there is no internet connection. The only way I can get the internet on my laptop is to connect it to my router with a cable. I used a wired connection and ran the update utility thinking that perhaps an update would fix the issue but it did not. I know the adapter works because the laptop used to have windows xp installed and I could connect fine with that.
Does anyone here have any idea why I would be able to connect wirelessly to the routers configuration page but not to the internet? I appreciate any advice anyone may have.
For the last 3 or so hours I have been trying in vain to simply give my mobile phone wifi internet access from my netbook. I have tried to google and follow some howto's and guides, but they're either too old or don't explain it very well. I'm fairly new to use of Linux and of wireless networks, but can handle setting them up in Windows. So basically, having said that, I believe I mostly understand how this whole thing is supposed to work theoretically but I just feel as though I lack the experience to jump the wireless hurdle AND the Linux hurdle at the same time. I have provided some information below.
- Setup is based on Lucid netbook remix install with a Maverick kernel update due to lack of driver support for wireless NIC - I can confirm wireless does work properly for connection purposes
- I followed [URL] and kind of followed [URL however I couldn't even tell how to run Network Manager, even though Synaptic tells me it is installed
- When I ran into problems trying to install ipmasq I found [URL] and followed what the response told me to which allowed me to restart the dnsmasq and the dhcp3-server at least
- I have restarted the entire netbook several times throughout the process.
I've just updated my Dell Inspiron Mini to Maverick Meerkat (10.10), and I've very quickly run into quite a few problems. First, it took an awful long time to install all of the updates. Is that normal? Perhaps it's just because I'm using a puny netbook?
When the updates were finished and I rebooted, I logged in without any problems, but then got a gray screen. I've seen that screen before, when Ubuntu loads (especially with Lucid), but it doesn't go away. I rebooted using Desktop Edition instead of Netbook Edition, and there was an improvement, but the top toolbar is blank.Additionally, and most importantly, I can't get an Internet connection of any kind, wired or wireless.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOkay, a couple of weeks ago I was running 10.04, got an auto update that needed a firefox restart, so rather than restart, I just shutdown the computer for the weekend. When I booted the computer on Monday it would find sites (www.google.com, start.ubuntu.com) but it wouldn't download the necessary items to load the page. Now I have a windows laptop sitting next to the ubuntu box and it was online with no issues, so I know it wasn't the connection itself. So I decided that the update messed up the system so I downloaded 10.10 and installed that and ran that all last week.
On Friday I got a system update that required a firefox restart, so I ran firefox for the day and decided that since it was friday, I would just shutdown the computer and reboot on Monday.Well now Monday is here and now I again have sloooowww internet, to the point that URL.. times out and won't come up. I have tried doing a traceroute on both machines and the windows box gets all the way to www.google.com, but the ubuntu box gets about halfway there and then gets no response. I am at a loss, I don't want to reinstall every week. I did try to reboot and run the previous version of 10.10 that shows in the boot menu, but that does the same thing. One thing I did notice is that the broadcast ip is different than the machine IP, don't know enough to know if this is a problem.

I have not been able to get an internet connection wired or wireless on my laptop. I downloaded the drivers from Acer's website and tried installing them using ndiswrapper. Still no luck.
I have a wireless cable modem/router and a PCI-E 1x wireless card in my desktop PC. It works perfectly until I connect my Ethernet cable to my local router and printer, no more internet connection. I am guessing there is a setting somewhere that tells the networking software that the hard wire connection is the primary internet gateway. How do I tell it to use the wireless as the primary gateway?

Actually I need the wireless adapter to connect to the AP, so both of the ethernet card should be disabled. Infact, when I try to access to the AP I must disable the eth0 card by using (sudo ifconfig eth0 down), otherwise the route assigns the default gw (192.168.1.1) to the eth0 device and the network is useless.
im on node1 when i type the command ssh node2@ip the terminal hangs up a bit then an error message stating that connection timeout but here is a thing: i cant ping to node2
but i can terminate the ping manually using ctrl+c when i terminate the ping usual message appears stating 10 packets transmitted, 100% loss
ps: when i go to node3 and ssh to node2 it works fine and also i can ping from node3 to node2 very fine. and the firewalls are down at all nodes -all wired connection over a switch

I am currently using NDISWrapper to load the bcmwl15 driver and when it's active it works beautifully.Problem is sometimes at boot, the card doesn't "turn on" and I don't know how else to describe it. The OS does not even detect that the hardware is present. I have disabled wireless hotkey in BIOS. The only way to make the wireless card "active" is to reboot with the wiredconnection to the router. After doing that the wireless card "wakes up" and works awesome.Is there anything I can do to make sure the driver load at boot?mes I get the error that NDISWrapper is not modprobbed when I go to network configuration and if I wish to do i now? I don't know if that has anything to do with the boot sequence. Using the <modprobe ndiswrapper> command as root does nothing permanant

After google around, seems like this is a common problem? Then I switched to wired network, and turned out the same thing happens again. I have a Mandriva linux box connected by cable to my router. When I stream audio using this box it crashes all the wireless computers on my network. There is no effect on wired computers. All but the one computer are windows (xp or vista). The affected wireless computers are not able to even find my wireless network. I have to reboot the router to get them online.

Can I make it automatically "just work", so that the right network is chosen for Internet traffic? Otherwise, what's the workaround?
I have recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server Edition, with no GUI. I can't connect to internet, and therefore I can't use commands like "apt-get update" I do not even know how to configure this server yet. my problem is that the wired internet is working on and off, or not even that, only when it wants too. I have googled and googled, which by the way is not loading at all at the moment, and have not found anything. And i really don't know what's wrong. Some more details: 1) Finished installing suse 11.2 with gnome, yesterday. Internet, and google worked fine right off the bat. I have a laptop and so i suspended it to see if everything was working. 2) Bring back the laptop, no internet. I reboot, internet works (google included). 3) I leave the laptop alone, it goes to sleep mode (or what comes after screensaver).
I bring it back, no internet, i reboot, no internet. So i go to windows. 4) Came back to suse, now, and i have internet and google does not load! This is all with wired internet, i haven't had a chance to try the wireless (there isn't a signal for me to try). However, i am positive it won't work with the luck i've been having. Also, a few days ago i had suse with kde and the internet worked continously. I know it can't be related to the GUI, but it's peculiar.
I'm new to OpenSuSE and have just booted up an Acer Aspire 4736z laptop with the 11.2 livecd. All of the specs (gathered from lspci -n) are available here: Debian HCL - Acer / Aspire 4736Z. Wired internet does not work. I have tried `modprobe atl1e` then `service network restart`to no effect. NetworkManager says nothing is plugged in (perhaps a hotplugging issue?). eth0 is listed in ifconfig.
