Ubuntu :: Natty Hangs On Boot

May 14, 2011

When I boot Ubuntu 11.04 it goes as far as showing me the OS options (I dual-boot with Windows7) and then what should be the login window. However - here it displays the mouse and nothing else. It just hangs. I can hit ALT-F1 and get a shell. I login and everything works as expected except X isn't running.

BACKGROUND: I tried to upgrade from 10.10 when (mid-upgrade) my computer turned itself off (suspect housemate unpluged it by mistake and then it ran out of battery). When I turned it on again, it refused to boot, complaining that the / drive was not there. After a bit of digging around I found that it was actually mounting / with read-only permissions. After remounting it with read/write permission I was able to continue with the upgrade. HOWEVER, I never managed to connect to the wireless from the command line (I tried all sorts, sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "eduroam", sudo dhclient wlan0). Since it hadn't finished to download the new packages, I don't know what it did (presumably installed the ones it did have). Anyway, after doing this I rebooted and everything seemed to work - I logged in and (using update-manager) did a partial upgrade which seemed to work. The only problem was that it was now complaining that nautilus was not configured and for this reason it could not update a package called libglib2.0 or something like that. I tried to repair broken packages/reinstall nautilus etc nothing worked. I then rebooted (I don't remember why I thought that would be a good idea). Since it hasn't given me a GUI login window again. It just hangs, like I said.

Ubuntu Servers :: Natty Upgrade - GPG Hangs ?

Jun 4, 2011

I have a home file server that I am trying to upgrade to natty 11.04. It was running 10.04 and was behind on updates due to lack of an internet connection for several months. I didn't have any problems applying all updates (sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude full-upgrade) and then upgrading to 10.10 (sudo do-release-upgrade). I applied all updates to 10.10 (sudo aptitude update; sudo aptitude full-upgrade) without any problems.

However I encountered problems trying to upgrade to 11.04.

Running:

Code:

Hangs indefinitely. I don't receive error messages, it just sits there. I have to escape from Screen and 'sudo screen -wipe' to try anything else.

I tried changing my repository list to point to a different mirror, but no change.

If I had error messages I would have more to go on, but at the moment I'm stuck.

Ubuntu Installation :: Connecting To Wifi Hangs Natty?

May 12, 2011

Just upgraded to Natty on both my desktop and netbook. Desktop upgrade was a breeze, and I'm liking the changes.Netbook isn't having such a good time however.First login after upgrade (using default gnome settings) played the login sound and froze. No mouse movement/keyboard response. I tried again with Ubuntu Classic - nothing. Finally Ubuntu Classic No Effects did correctly boot/login. I allowed it to perform a proper shutdown (was doing a power flip beforehand), and it was able to boot into normal Ubuntu Unity.

I enabled the wifi module using the laptop's keyboard shortcut, and Ubuntu searched for nearby networks. After finding my prefered network, it started to connect and threw the system into a command console abyss and froze. Tried again on the Ubuntu Class no effects, and it freezes on connecting to a wifi network. If the laptop crashes and I have to perform a power cycle, I can't boot into normal Ubuntu mode. I have to go back into Classic no effects.

Details

OS: Ubuntu 11.04
Previous OS: 10.04 Ubuntu Desktop Edition
Laptop: Asus Eee 1001P
Wifi Network: WPA2/AES/PSK

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Natty Hangs While Starting Services?

Jun 15, 2011

I'm trying to install 11.04 natty on an HP Probook 6455b and failing.

Using two different burned cds I'm able to start the install process

1) I can get to the initial menu and interact with it to change command line options

2) I can boot the kernel and see services trying to start

At some point the system hangs and I suspect because upstart is starting services in parallel the console messages aren't showing the same consistent point for the hang.

with my last run using --verbose on the command line the last few lines are:

* Starting bluetooth
* Starting configure network device security
* Starting configure network device
* PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions
saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned

Another run I just did (with network cable unplugged) ended with the same but also

* Stopping save kernel messages

I should note that the Pulseaudio line's asterisk is red or orange, does that indicate anything?

Mostly I'm looking for suggestions on how I can further debug and diagnose this problem to resolve it.

The system previously ran 10.10 fine and runs Fedora 15 (which should have a very similar kernel level) with no apparent problems.

Probook 6455 = basic HP laptop with AMD Phenom II mobile processor, 6G of RAM, ATI 4200 embedded graphics, etc, etc. Nothing special really.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Natty Installer Hangs At Timezone Select

Aug 11, 2011

I've just decided to downgrade from 64-bit to 32-bit Ubuntu. I created a live USB from the most recent (as of today) 11.04 download, booted up, and selected the option to replace Ubuntu. (Also on my HDD are a Windows partition and a shared partition for documents.)The installer hung at the timezone select page - and, foolishly, I hard-restarted the PC. I can get into 'try Ubuntu' without problems, but every time I try to actually install, it hangs. I can't boot into Windows, since GRUB seems to have been overwritten in my failed partial install. (I can get to a 'grub rescue' prompt, though.)

I suspected it might have something to do with my internet connection - I need to go through a university proxy script, so I'm not sure whether the installer will actually have internet access, even after I've been able to apply proxy settings while running Ubuntu from the USB.

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Upgrade And LiveCD Hangs On Sandy Bridge

Apr 29, 2011

I have an i5 sandy bridge PC with a gigabyte H67M mobo. I have been running maverick amd64 till yesterday. On maverick graphic acceleration didn't work so I decided to upgrade. After upgrade my computer hangs during bootup (with ubuntu logo on screen). I cannot see messages on screen, wasn't ESC key for that? Live CD seems to boot but also hangs computer after loading purple login wallpaper before login dialog is shown. To me it seems a graphic card regression issue since intel mobo graphic card wasn't working fine on maverick too. Also tried to manage with fail-safe graphic mode but this also hangs computer. Is there any log where I can see errors during last bootup from maverick live-cd?

Ubuntu :: Boot Hangs (sometimes) After Dual Boot Screen?

May 25, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and a small Windows 7 partition (cuz I can't get Ubuntu to run my MSI TV@nywhere plus card but that's another issue).I can log into Windows fine. If I choose Ubuntu, however, the boot process will go thru a few screen flickers. Then one of two things happens:1) I get a scrambled up pixelated image (not sure what it is) for about 3 second, then it goes into the login screen and I can log in normally.2) I get the scrambled up pixelated image and it hangs. This happens about 4 times out of 5 when rebooting.

I do have an nVidia card and a beta driver (they published it the 21st, I believe, of this month) but this happened long before that. It's happened ever since I installed any of the drivers (I've tried a couple different versions, hoping to fix this) for my card.

My system is a frankenputer:
Phenom II quad core 3.0 cpu
nVidia GeForce BFG 6600
4G DDR3
500G drive

Note: I do have 3D rendering when I finally get into the desktop. Everything works great, except that when I'm playing my mmorpg, Regnum Online, it freezes the entire computer and I have to reboot (not sure if that has anything to do with it or not).In case it's needed, this is my grub:(Second note: I'm sorry for the length of the post but I don't know how to upload documents/files to show)

# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub

OpenSUSE Hardware :: GRUB To Dual Boot 11.2 And Windows XP But Hangs On Boot

Apr 20, 2010

HW config is: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition, MSI 785GTM-E45, 2X 1Gb Kingston HyperX PC2-8500. I have set up GRUB to dualboot openSUSE 11.2 and WindowsXP. Initially i had set up system with defaults: CPU@2600MHz (200X13) and therefore RAM@800MHz. Both openSUSE 11.2 and WindowsXP worked just fine. Memtest86 found no problems.

But after a while i decided to change this setup to: CPU@2500MHz (250X10) and therefore RAM@1000MHz, as it promised better overall performance. And now Windows still boots and works better then before. Memtest86 still can't find any problem. But openSUSE 11.2 hangs at boot. I've suspected cpufreq governor, but changing from Ondemand to Conservative in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq doesn't help.

Now in the evening when I'm trying to boot nothing happens, just black screen. Nothing happens after that.

Though I can boot by selecting "Previous Version" but can't boot normally. Though I was surprised that even after selecting "previous version" I was booted in to Natty(I guess so, as the UI is Unity not GNOME).

But can't boot using the Kernel that's listed first in my Menu.

Ubuntu :: Slow Boot And Other Weirdness In Natty

May 10, 2011

I have two versions of Natty that I'm running on my EeePC 900. Both are clean installs. As they're both installed on removable flash drives, I expect a certain degree of sluggishness. One installation is the full version with Unity. It boots in about 25 seconds or so, which is slower than Lucid on the same machine, but not too bad.

The other installation was a command-line install with Openbox and GDM for logging in. You'd think this would be quicker, but it's taking a full minute to boot. When it gets to the GDM login screen, I can't see the mouse pointer. If I move the mouse into the lower right-hand corner, I can see the invisible pointer hover over the shutdown button and then I can select it. Alternatively, if I press return (to select my login) and then move the mouse vigorously, a pointer will eventually appear, but it's a large X and not the standard pointer.

Ubuntu :: Upgrade To Natty Fails To Boot (RAID5 Array)

May 20, 2011

My box has a raid5 array (mdadm) with everything in it (/boot and /) but swap that is actually spread across the 4 drives. I had ubuntu 10.10 installed (amd64) with grub1, when I upgraded to natty (11.04) it automatically installed grub2. Well boot fails, it always goes to grub rescue no matter what happens. I've installed and reinstalled grub2, and boot always fails with:

"error: file not found".

In grub rescue I can see that md0 is actually available, an "ls" to (md0)/boot succeeds but the strange thing is that an "ls" to (md0)/boot/grub prints nonsense, as does an "ls" to (md0)/boot/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/. When I try to load the required modules for boot (linux raid etc) in grub I also always get a "file not found error" (I fsck'd md0, which says everything's fine). I have installed the latest version of grub2 and executed grub-install in all four drives.

I upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04 LTS. Now when booting it hangs and drops me to a initramfs shell. This is a scsi machine with 3 drives. The error I get before dropping to the shell is that the drive with the uuid in menu.lst does not exist. If I type "exit" at initramfs, it finishes booting in a couple of seconds. The uuid is correct and maybe this is a timeout error of some kind. This is a machine that I would want to reboot without having to walk over and type "exit" at the initramfs prompt.

Ubuntu :: 10.4 Hangs On Boot?

Mar 6, 2011

I've just had the power cut out while downloading a bunch of updates for Ubuntu 10.4

I haven't updated to the latest release because I'm lazy and have slow internet.

Anyway, once power had been restored, I turned my desktop on to find that my install will not actually load. It boots up and goes to the purple 'Ubuntu' screen with the orange dots, and just sits there (for about 15 minutes so far) without any activity on-screen.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 as I said above, and I'd really like to get a solution that does not include 'start from a fresh installation', since I've had to really wrestle with this install to get my wireless adaptor (USB) and wacom tablet working properly.

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Won't Boot - Error: Symbol Not Found: 'grub_env_export'

Apr 29, 2011

after upgrading 10.10 to Natty 11.04 my Kubuntu 64-bit System won't boot anymore. During upgrade an error message appears, saying GRUB2 cannot be installed into a partition (something about bad idea and blocklist). First reboot shows this error message:

Code:

Error: symbol not found: 'grub_env_export'

I tried to repair GRUB2 by using a Live CD, mounting all needed partitions, chroot to my installed system and running update-grub2. This time no error message appears. Next reboot the system does hang, showing "Booting..." for minutes. Nothing happens.I'm using a partition boot loader (for Linux) since years on my Netbook / Notebook. Due to security reasons all partitions of the mobile device were encrypted. Unfortunately I also need an Windows system, so the first partition contains an Win 7 installation encrypted with Truecrypt.

Truecrypt needs to be installed into the MBR (as far as I do know and from my first tests some times ago). So I installed the Linux bootloader into the /boot partition (sda6).
Linux root partition is also encrypted using cryptsetup/Luks.How can I fix this problem, keep my Truecrypt/Windows system and boot the encrypted Linux system?

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Dual Boot On Separate Hard Drives

May 29, 2011

I've been trying to properly install grub for the past 3 days and failing every time.I recently bought a new computer and would like to dual boot Windows 7 64 and Natty. On my previous machines, ubuntu installer has automatically detected windows. It does not do so on this machine.I have three hard drives: 2 ssd's and a single 3 tb drive for storage.

I would like one ssd for windows 7 and one for natty.Currently, I am able to boot into both OS's but only by altering the boot sequence of the drives from the bios. I am hesitant to install grub to the windows drive for fear I will lose the ability to boot into windows. I did this early in the discovery process and ended up having to reinstall windows.
