I'm not exactly sure what that is or why that's causing it to take so long to do.
Since my upgrade to 11.04, ubuntu has been running real slow. When I click on the firefox icon on the side bar, it literally takes over 3 seconds to start opening up. And the same thing goes for folders. Is there something I need to tweak to fix this? And my computer is pretty fast on its own, vista runs very fast on it if that says something.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two versions of Natty that I'm running on my EeePC 900. Both are clean installs. As they're both installed on removable flash drives, I expect a certain degree of sluggishness. One installation is the full version with Unity. It boots in about 25 seconds or so, which is slower than Lucid on the same machine, but not too bad.
The other installation was a command-line install with Openbox and GDM for logging in. You'd think this would be quicker, but it's taking a full minute to boot. When it gets to the GDM login screen, I can't see the mouse pointer. If I move the mouse into the lower right-hand corner, I can see the invisible pointer hover over the shutdown button and then I can select it. Alternatively, if I press return (to select my login) and then move the mouse vigorously, a pointer will eventually appear, but it's a large X and not the standard pointer.
I've been a long time Windows user, but I've started a small firm and because of lack of funds, I've decided to install Ubuntu on my company's PCs.I have 8 PCs in total - 6 of them with Intel CPUs, and the last two with AMD CPUs. I bought the extra two computers because I've managed to find an extra two people to work at my company, and AMD-based PCs are cheaper so I've decided to buy them instead of Intel.Long-story short, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and boot time takes about half-an-hour. After the computers finally boot, USB hardware doesn't work at all. I was forced to buy PS/2 keyboards & mice and they both work fine after the PCs boot.I don't know what's causing this delay.I've enabled Cool 'n Quiet from BIOS.I've tried several instructions like editing the /etc/modules file.I've installed cpufreqd, tried to configure it, but it didn't work.I've check the CPU stats and my CPUs are running at 800MHz. I can't believe nobody managed to fix the 800MHz problem as I've noticed it's quite common among AMD Ubuntu users. I think I've tried almost anything that I've found on this forum.I can't keep asking my employees not to reboot their PCs. Both Chrome/Firefox crash a lot on Ubuntu so they're forced to restart their computers.The computer specs are: AMD Athlon II X2 240 dual-core @ 2.800MHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, etc.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got two laptops running Ubuntu. Both have had Lucid installed from the live cd. I have upgraded one of them to Maverick. Both distributions are running great after they boot up, but I haven't experienced any faster boot times with either distibution. Both boot to Bios and then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in upper left corner of the screen. The black screen remains for 30 to 45 seconds and then I get the Ubuntu splash screen for maybe 5 seconds, and then desktop. Why am I not seeing faster boot times? I realize 45 to 60 seconds is good compared to other os's, but I anticipated much faster boot times. Shut down on the other hand is quite fast at maybe 5 to 10 seconds. Does anyone else get this black screen on boot? Seems like wasted time cause I can't tell what's going on during the time there is a black screen. This is not a real big deal breaker, as I don't reboot very often, but I just wonder why bootup isn't faster.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy box has a raid5 array (mdadm) with everything in it (/boot and /) but swap that is actually spread across the 4 drives. I had ubuntu 10.10 installed (amd64) with grub1, when I upgraded to natty (11.04) it automatically installed grub2. Well boot fails, it always goes to grub rescue no matter what happens. I've installed and reinstalled grub2, and boot always fails with:
"error: file not found".
In grub rescue I can see that md0 is actually available, an "ls" to (md0)/boot succeeds but the strange thing is that an "ls" to (md0)/boot/grub prints nonsense, as does an "ls" to (md0)/boot/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/. When I try to load the required modules for boot (linux raid etc) in grub I also always get a "file not found error" (I fsck'd md0, which says everything's fine). I have installed the latest version of grub2 and executed grub-install in all four drives.
I'm using Fedora 12 since 2 years lately, I really enjoy this S.O., it's quite robust and wonderful, but a couple of months ago it is really slow to boot up when startup the computer, I've checked everything, but seems to be ok, I had a partition lost arround that date, but recover successfully, it happens when I run gparted that It cannot see partition on my 500 GB disk, but still boots up. When running Mandriva live cd, it can see (?) all partitions on that disk, even with Fedora Dolphin I can access this partitions. What could it be?

I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2 with all the released updates are installed. I've got an Windows Xp SP3 on the same hard drive and it's works fine. S.M.A.R.T. says the hdd is 100%. A few days ago I realized that the boot time increased and the hard drive operations takes way too much time. So currently the boot sequence takes 11-14 minutes.
I've already tried to solve this problem but no effect:
1.) cleaned up the root directory to create more free space
2.) plugged the sata cable to another port
3.) changed from AHCI to IDE and reverse in BIOS settings
4.) added ahci, sata_nv into the /etc/sysconfig/kernel file and created a new initrd
5.) searched for problems in the syslog
Just to imagine how slow is currently the system/hdd:
My laptop boot up time increased considerably (10 seconds) after allocating a virtual drive for virtualbox guest. The guest installation did not work so i removed it along with the virtual disk. Now everytime when i boot to ubuntu, after inputting my password in the login screen, it takes much longer to load the system. And during the loading time the disk activity indicator light blinks indicating the harddisk is actually busy loading the system.
I decided to search around for a possible answer and force reprofiling ureadahead does the trick Now boot time is back to what it used to be
Ever since I installed Ubuntu Natty, from time to time, for no particular reason, the entire computer screen freezes, and I am forced to hold the power button on my laptop to restart things with a hard reset. I cannot explain why it happens.
Such an issue never occurred in any of the past installations and versions of Ubuntu. This is a fresh installation of Natty by the way.
Also, I can currently be running a lot or nothing and it does this. Thus, it does not matter what I am actually doing (ie, what programs I might be running).
It has occurred about 10 times since I freshly installed Natty 6 days ago.

I'm running a dual partitioned (Vista / Fedora 11 x86_64) Intel X25-M Mainstream SSD.
Whilst Vista boots in about 15 seconds, Fedora takes around twice as long; in fact far longer than Fedora 9 on my old Western Digital Raptor drive.
Is this to be expected, or might I have some sort of configuration problem? Has anyone else had similar experiences?
I just recently upgraded my kubuntu install from karmic to lucid and now it takes about 10-15 minutes to boot. Directly after the upgrade it was pretty slow already, but it got worse every day from then. The karmic version was a wubi install I moved to a dedicated partition using lvpm. After choosing which partition to use I get the blinking white cursor in the upper left hand corner and the "Boot from (hd0,4) ext 3..." sits there for a while before coming to the log in screen. There have been quite a few posts about this, a lot of people are saying disabling the floppy drive in the BIOS has worked for them. I don't have a floppy drive on my laptop.

Since upgrading my mythbuntu box from lucid to maverick my boot times have been much slower. Looking at dmesg I can see delays. Can anyone who knows more than me point me in the right direction to fix these?

I am running my Ubuntu 32 bit server on top of Windows 7 64 bit with VirualBox. It's a 2 core Atom. It's been working good for about half a year. But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I can set it right by coping the hareware time to system time with this command:

On my computer, I mount at boot time through the /etc/fstab some shares.I was working flawlessly on 9.04 and previous version.Since 9.10 version, it sometime fails to mount the share and I need to run PHP Code:sudo mount -a to get my mount shared mounted. (the command "mount -a" always work).

I am dual booting natty and linux mint debian edition. I have noticed in LMDE compiz is far, far, far, far smoother. In natty scrolling, resizing, and animations are all noticeably laggier. In LMDE I can use the normal resize with no problem, in natty its so laggy I need to use rectangle or stretch. Animations are also glitchy (fade animations have white flicker) In lmde there are no visual hiccups.
I am using the same driver and kernel in LMDE, the major difference is LMDE has a much older compiz (0.8.4, before the compiz++ rewrite I believe.) Does anyone know why the newer compiz in natty is so much slower? Does anyone else expereince this? my video card is an hd2600 using the cat 11.4 driver, but I experience these same issues with the oss driver.
I accepted the latest Natty update about which I was notified a couple of days ago (I don't remember exactly). I don't remember a new kernel being pushed out, but for the record I'm on 2.6.38-8-generic right now. I'm trying to interact with a USB compact flash reader and I'm getting ridiculously low throughput (less than 1 MB per second). Before this latest upgrade, I don't remember this being a problem.
Better yet, does anybody know what might be wrong and what I might be able to do to fix this?

After several upgrades (from 8.xx) I noticed Gnome terminal took about 4 seconds to open an window and another 4 seconds to give me a prompt. This is excruciating when blasting out CLI in dozens of terminals ssh'd into dozens of machines. Tabs were no different.
Fix was: Comment out anything in ~/.bashrc that references xterm. BOOM less than 1s total to prompt.
If it's faster than I can get my mouse hand back to the keyboard to start blasting CLI, it's good enough
I have been a happy Ubuntu and other distros user from 2007 to now. Had my old 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon (Ubuntu Studio actually) that I really felt was time to upgrade. Then I downloaded the ISO image for 11.04 Natty Narwhal past 4 day ago. It gave me an option to install on my old 7.10, upgrading it, then I chose that one not to have to lose my data.
At the very end of the installation (when downloading several packages from the net) I got a kernel panic.
After that I reinstalled from zero wiping the whole partition, with the same results. It only worked when I disconnected the net cable so it wouldn't download anything during install. Then I could run the 11.04, but kept getting kernel panics, and after some testings (I thought it was the nvidia video drivers at first) I think it happens after some ammount of network traffic happens.
Memtest went normal, I tried logging with no-effects and I tried some solutions from forums with no results. The pc can be on and working for hours, but after I start surfing the web for some time, I get a freeze. Sometimes Caps Lock and Scroll Lock leds are flashing, and sometimes just freezes to simply become unresponsive. When it was during the installation I got a message saying it would pop out into console because panic occured and then froze. Anyway I always have to press the reset button.
I would like to be sure if I have some of my hardware broken or if the newest kernel is still green on some hardware support; maybe network. I'd also like to know if I can install older versions of the kernel; I think that should fix the problem because other distros worked perfectly here before. I also heard about some kernel-image-pae being different from the ordinary kernel image. Could it help if I change that package? I'm waiting to install 11.04 in my wife's computer also but of course I don't want to bring any problems on her! My net card is Nvidia Nforce and my processor is AMD Athlon II X2 with a GForce 9400 for video card.
After updating to kubuntu 11.04 natty, I have a problem with my internet-connection. The problem happens when I use VoIP-Software like Skype or Twinkle and also when using ktorrent.
When using the mentioned software, after 30-90 seconds the internet gets very slow. In f.e. skype, I can hear the one I phoned very badly.
I use kubuntu on a desktop-PC with a Linksys USB-Wlan-Stick. Detailed information is below.

After doing a wubi install of 11.04 onto my hp g56-116a because of it having all 4 primary partitions in use, natty seems to be running abnormally slow Not throughout, but there's major slowdowns when doing something like opening a new browser window or similar task.
Sometimes it will just spontaneously log out. The slowdowns are so bad the mouse cursor will become completely unresponsive/laggy for 20-25 seconds. My laptop has 4GB RAM and an intel celeron t3500 cpu, which zips windows 7 along speedily, but its running this install a lot slower than my old laptop ran in,with 2GB RAM and a slightly slower processor.
I just upgraded to 11.04 from 10.10. I have a Radeon 6450 with 1GB of video RAM which should give me pretty good performance, but I'm only getting a measly 60 fps with the new ATI diver (11.4). I installed like this, making sure I'd removed the open source driver:sh ati-driver-installer-11-4-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/nattyThen installed the debs and ran an aticonfig --initial.
