Ubuntu :: Boot Fails After Upgrading To Natty?
May 2, 2011
I was using Maverick, I performed upgrade to Natty today morning and rebooted and it was working fine. Then I turned off my PC and left home.
Now in the evening when I'm trying to boot nothing happens, just black screen. Nothing happens after that.
Though I can boot by selecting "Previous Version" but can't boot normally. Though I was surprised that even after selecting "previous version" I was booted in to Natty(I guess so, as the UI is Unity not GNOME).
But can't boot using the Kernel that's listed first in my Menu.

I was upgrading our lab's dhcp server to Lucid and it totally died. I have it running on a Debian recovery cd right now. I ran into a bug in gtk which I seem to have fixed, but now I have more serious errors. If I boot without a CD, I get dumped into a busybox shell after the machine fails to boot. From the live CD, I tried dist-upgrading again and it dies trying to build and install rsyslog with a broken pipe error. I am at a loss as to what to do from here short of reinstalling (which is the last option as this server has a lot of custom configs on it)

My box has a raid5 array (mdadm) with everything in it (/boot and /) but swap that is actually spread across the 4 drives. I had ubuntu 10.10 installed (amd64) with grub1, when I upgraded to natty (11.04) it automatically installed grub2. Well boot fails, it always goes to grub rescue no matter what happens. I've installed and reinstalled grub2, and boot always fails with:
"error: file not found".
In grub rescue I can see that md0 is actually available, an "ls" to (md0)/boot succeeds but the strange thing is that an "ls" to (md0)/boot/grub prints nonsense, as does an "ls" to (md0)/boot/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/. When I try to load the required modules for boot (linux raid etc) in grub I also always get a "file not found error" (I fsck'd md0, which says everything's fine). I have installed the latest version of grub2 and executed grub-install in all four drives.

My Live CD for Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) isn't working on my old computer for some reason. However, I have an old live CD for 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) lying around. Is it possible to install Feisty and upgrade from that to Natty?

First of all I'd like to say me and my family and friends who ive converted to Ubuntu users have had trouble with natty from the start (needing to mount the drive manually from the terminal after the upgrade being one of the problems) but there are two problems I was curious if anyone else had and fixed. The first problem is an app called "DeVeDe" which is used to convert video files into isos, it appears to work fine until the end when it errors and says I may be out of disk space. My work around is to take the MPG file it converted (which didn't seem to be affected by the error) and convert it using bombono into the ISO. Bombono gives me a similar error if I try to use it from the beginning, so devede does the first half without retiring and bombono does the second half, both program's world perfectly before upgrading to natty and I've tried changing settings and reinistalling but nothing helps. My second problem is with my nvidia drivers, they seem to work fine when I'm using my monitor but when I try to use my 47" LED vision as a monitor it says its detecting it as a CRT and only lets m do 1024x768 as my Max resolution. I know some people will say I should be posting in recede and nvidias forums but thee bugs aren't there fault, as both things world perfect before I upgraded to natty

The last time I attempted to install an alpha release, my entire hard drive was wiped out (it was backed up) because of my ignorance to the installation warnings. Would it be possible upgrade Maverick Meerkat to Natty without editing any partitions?

After rebooting, the first message i've been shown was: "Your hardware doesn't support Unity". First strange thing: Unity was working perfectly on all the Beta live versions I've tried before the upgrade.
Well, not a big problem, I didn't really like Unity. Let's stay with Gnome + Compiz, I said.. but Compiz effects don't work anymore. When I try to do System --> Preferences --> Appearance, the "effects" tab doesn't show anymore. The file named "screenshot1.png" will show you this problem, even if it's in Italian: there are only the Theme (tema), Background (sfondo) and Fonts (Tipo di carattere) tabs. Also look to the strange, fuzzy right corner of the themes previews. This didn't happen on 10.10. 3d rendering should be working, since I get
Code:
glxinfo | grep rendering
direct rendering: Yes
But nothing works.
System->Administration->Hardware is empty, but it has always been empty, even on 10.10 (but Compiz effects were working). When I try to set Compiz as windows manager in Compiz Fusion Icon, sometimes the title of the windows disappear, along with the minimize, maximize and close buttons. Do you think there's something I can do to fix all these things?

Press
Code:
Alt+F2
and type
Code:
update-manager -d
This should show the option to upgrade to the latest alpha release of natty. Through the terminal this can be done using the same command but you need use.
Code:
sudo
or
Code:
sudo -s
to do this.

After the upgrade to Natty from v9.04, though, my flash player won't update past version 10.0.15.3; the latest version is 10.3.181.4. This is rather annoying in its own right, the more so when I watch quite a bit of hulu. I have so far tried uninstalling and reinstalling flash through the software center and by manually installing the .tar.gz file available from this site: [URL]Perhaps most distressing is that the site advertises that you're downloading v10.3.181.4, when I can't get past 10.0.15.3.
Interestingly, when I tried the 'download via APT' option specifically for Ubuntu, there were issues. It would get to the 'open with' box, but when I tried to click on software center, nothing would happen (software center would dehighlight, and no further action would take place) including when I specifically searched and selected software center. As of a few minutes ago, the apt server was having issues (or firefox is) and firefox reports it is unable to find the file.

I have a problem, because installation of ubuntu 11.04 will fail if I try to.
I have also Kubuntu and Xubuntu installed, which I regret a lot because I cannot uninstall them as well...
The problem is that I have installed a one-time-activation proprietary software so a fresh install is no option.
The error when upgrading is, that "xubuntu-desktop" cannot be marked for upgrade!

I've been happily using this lappie with LTS but wanted to try out 11.04. It looks great but wireless has been an issue:
1. No wireless during install
2. Had to manually blacklist the rt2860pci etc modules
3. Wireless still not resuming after suspend

Subsystem: Ralink corp. Device 2790

The latter manual mod improved things slightly but still no cigar

I'm just completing an upgrade from wheezy to jessie and get the following error
Code: Select allProcessing triggers for initramfs-tools (0.120) ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-4-amd64
E: intel-microcode: unsupported kernel version!
With a message like this I'm wondering if it's safe to reboot as well as how to resolve.
Is this somehow related to the change to only update the microcode on boot as reported earlier in the upgrade?
Code: Select allintel-microcode: microcode will be updated at next boot

I have a D-Link DNS-323 network drive which mounts at multiple points to my filesystem when booting. I had to make some fstab changes when I upgraded from 11.2->11.3 last year, and now the same thing seems to be happening since I've upgraded to 11.4. When I login to my profile the desktop hangs and no icons appear. I cannot open a Nautilus window, or access ALT-F2, however just about every other program works fine. Since I disabled the fstab lines (slightly modified when copied here to generalize):
Code:
#//192.168.123.xxx/SHARED-FOLDER1/User-folder /home/user/Documents cifs guest,_netdev,uid=user,gid=users
#//192.168.123.xxx/SHARED-FOLDER2 /home/user/SHARED-FOLDER2 cifs credentials=/home/user/.scripts/.creds,_netdev,uid=user,gid=users 0 0
the desktop icons load and Nautilus works. Can I adjust my fstab syntax to correct this and get my network drives back? I think last year the issue was in referencing the ".creds" file...

I'm in need of a bit of assistance from you Debian users. I have two servers that I thought were identical installations, both running Debian Lenny. Tonight I started the upgrade to Squeeze on both servers and one of them went smooth. The other one started out good but fails on the postconfiguration of openssh-server. I'm getting the following message:
Code:
Setting up openssh-server (1:5.5p1-4) ...
Auto configuration failed
2524:error:0E079065:configuration file routines:DEF_LOAD_BIO:missing equal sign:conf_def.c:366:line 67
invoke-rc.d: initscript ssh, action "restart" failed.
[Code].....
It looks like there's an error in one of the files in openssh-server that prohibits it from installing correctly. However on the other server it all went well.

When I boot Ubuntu 11.04 it goes as far as showing me the OS options (I dual-boot with Windows7) and then what should be the login window. However - here it displays the mouse and nothing else. It just hangs. I can hit ALT-F1 and get a shell. I login and everything works as expected except X isn't running.
BACKGROUND: I tried to upgrade from 10.10 when (mid-upgrade) my computer turned itself off (suspect housemate unpluged it by mistake and then it ran out of battery). When I turned it on again, it refused to boot, complaining that the / drive was not there. After a bit of digging around I found that it was actually mounting / with read-only permissions. After remounting it with read/write permission I was able to continue with the upgrade. HOWEVER, I never managed to connect to the wireless from the command line (I tried all sorts, sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "eduroam", sudo dhclient wlan0). Since it hadn't finished to download the new packages, I don't know what it did (presumably installed the ones it did have). Anyway, after doing this I rebooted and everything seemed to work - I logged in and (using update-manager) did a partial upgrade which seemed to work. The only problem was that it was now complaining that nautilus was not configured and for this reason it could not update a package called libglib2.0 or something like that. I tried to repair broken packages/reinstall nautilus etc nothing worked. I then rebooted (I don't remember why I thought that would be a good idea). Since it hasn't given me a GUI login window again. It just hangs, like I said.

I have two versions of Natty that I'm running on my EeePC 900. Both are clean installs. As they're both installed on removable flash drives, I expect a certain degree of sluggishness. One installation is the full version with Unity. It boots in about 25 seconds or so, which is slower than Lucid on the same machine, but not too bad.
The other installation was a command-line install with Openbox and GDM for logging in. You'd think this would be quicker, but it's taking a full minute to boot. When it gets to the GDM login screen, I can't see the mouse pointer. If I move the mouse into the lower right-hand corner, I can see the invisible pointer hover over the shutdown button and then I can select it. Alternatively, if I press return (to select my login) and then move the mouse vigorously, a pointer will eventually appear, but it's a large X and not the standard pointer.

My Internet connection works fine when I boot Ubuntu with the CD and it does not work when I boot from the Hard Drive. It was working then it stopped. I tried to diagnose the problem but I am not familiar with Linux.
I opened a Terminal window and entered ipconfig (don't laugh ... sadly, i've been in Windows for too long) ipconfig was something that could not be found in my terminal window so i exited.
Next it was System->Administration->Network Tools. I ping'd www.yahoo.com and it said it could not find it. hmmmm. Let's see if restarting the system will fix it.
I did a shutdown and when it came back up; same problem. Ok, i really didn't think it would magically correct itself; this is Linux after all. Windows? Well sometimes you can fix things by turning them off and on. Next, another shutdown and I rebooted with the CD instead of the Hard drive and here I sit entering this help question in.
I am guessing that a file or setting got changed in /etc/someplace and I am not even sure of that. Can anyone point me in the correct direction? I am assuming that there is a setting which is correct in the CD version that is not not correct in the HD version and somehow i need to find what it is and synchronize it with the CD version.

I downloaded ubuntu 10.10 iso, made CD, installed as dual-boot with win Vista home premium and used it for a week to access the 'net and email. Yesterday, while deleting an email, the "d" key stuck down while I was issuing <CTRL>D and the cursor froze. I then rebooted by using the reset button and saw many lines of text including "kernel panic". so I reset and booted into 'repair boot'. Again, many lines of text which stop at the same place if I try this twice.
I assume I've fried my ubuntu install and would like to fix or re-install it. When I installed it, I let the [wubi?] installer make decisions except choice of drive because it picked the external, USB drive. It appears to've used about 80 G on internal drive D: I could boot from the distro CD and see if it will re-install but I'm concerned that I may not fix my problem or that it may mess up my windows installation.
