Howdy, I just installed a dual boot on my Acer Aspire One and it runs great. I was wondering is there anyway to access the files from either side? If so I can't see the XP file system from the Ubuntu system.

View 8 Replies View RelatedRecently I decided I wanted to try installing Ubuntu 8.10 inside of my Vista Home Premium x64 system.Ubuntu installs correctly, but when I try booting into Ubuntu from the boot screen, I get the black screen that tells me it's loading several components of the system, and then it suddenly stops at "Starting bluetooth..." or something of that general nature.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to properly install grub for the past 3 days and failing every time.I recently bought a new computer and would like to dual boot Windows 7 64 and Natty. On my previous machines, ubuntu installer has automatically detected windows. It does not do so on this machine.I have three hard drives: 2 ssd's and a single 3 tb drive for storage.
I would like one ssd for windows 7 and one for natty.Currently, I am able to boot into both OS's but only by altering the boot sequence of the drives from the bios. I am hesitant to install grub to the windows drive for fear I will lose the ability to boot into windows. I did this early in the discovery process and ended up having to reinstall windows.
I am running Natty on a Dell Inspiron 6000 under dual boot. Now Ubuntu refuses to load. GRUB goes along to a point where the final message in both regular and recovery modes is 81.8921591 atal: SRST failed (errno=-16). Is there any way I can recover short of having a professional rescue my data from the hard disk and totally redoing the install. I have had this problem in previous versions but never fatally before. My computer works fine under Windows.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently reinstalled Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" Daily 20101124 on my netbook and decided to place /home on an external 500GB SimpleTech hard drive because the netbook's internal SSD is only 8 GB.
Well, when I boot into the main SSD to try and test out the system, I have two problems:
First of all, GRUB is unstable and won't always find the kernel to boot. In particular, I have to hit <Enter> one, two, even three times just for GRUB to find the kernel and boot the system.
However, that's not all:
When the system is booting, I wait endlessly for X to start. It doesn't. The Plymouth splash screen stays there and it looks like the system is endlessly booting with no progress.
Suggest chrooting into the drive and doing a "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" by any chance? This being in order to make the system on the drive up-to-date? If so, I will see if it boots.
Can't log into my XFCE desktop like I normaly do. all the sudden I get notified that my xsession lasted less then 10 secondsLooking at the error I can see this:
Unable to access file /home/username/.iceauthority: No such file or directory
Using failsafe I can start a terminal. From terminal I tried to start X
Code: sudo startx Result: Running on desplay:0
So I tried to run this;
Code: sudo startxfce4 And I get up a graphical desktop.
So this is not a critical situation as I easily can use this method to log on, but as there has been something causing this I would like to be able to resolve this nonetheless. Btw it is not the old chmod trick in play here, cause my .iceauthority file is gone alltogheter.
Situation:
8GB SSD
#! on a 3.7GB partition, only 2.5GB used
Kuki (XFCE) on a 3.4GB partition, about 3GB used)
Both have their own /home folders within their individual /, but since I don't use this computer for documents/personal files, I figured it may be an idea to keep a 1GB partition just for my Home folder which would work for both distros. Both distros are Ubuntu based. Crunchbang uses Openbox, Kuki uses XFCE. They both are running the same kernel right now too in fact. I know how to use Gparted to create the spare 1GB partition, but I'm not sure how to get both distros to move their /home over there. I have the same usernames on each distros.
I'm getting ready to install Ubuntu Studio along side my regular Ubuntu on some extra space on my hard drive and it seems to make sense to share /home with both Ubuntu systems. All ext4. /home is on it's own partition so all I should have to do is point the installer at it and don't format.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi want to install ubuntu 10.04 on my studio 15 with i5 processor (already having win7 home ) in dual boot mode. i tried to install , it installed , but after restarting from second time onwards blank screen is coming and boot options are not coming , ERROR : no module found and with some values i tried for 4 times but unsuccessful , i did below steps
-my hdd is 320 so i separated 200(for win 7) , 50 (for personal ) , 40 unallocated for linux
-inserted ubuntu 10.04 rc1 CD
- in fourth step when selecting disk , i selected manual option(3rd)
- and i selected 40GB unallocated and formatted to ext4 and selected as root and install
- after reboot in boot options i can see 4 options i selected win 7 and from win7 i restarted
- after that black screen coming , boot options are not coming

One hard drive is partioned 500GB HD ([440gb XP partition] + [60gb ubuntu])
I can't access any of the sub-folders or files in my home folder on Ubuntu. I've checked the folder associations, that doesn't seem to be the issue. I've also opened the mimeapps.list file and the inode/directory association seems fine - inode/directory=nautilus-folder-handler.desktop;
I'm running Intrepid (8.10) (please don't ask me to upgrade! ) and the issue started after using Qtpfsgui 1.9.3 a couple of time to create HDR images. I guess Qtpfsgui broke an association somewhere, but where? I can access other folders, on Computer and Filesystem, but not on my home folder.
I decided last night it was finally time I look at Linux. I've wanted to for a very long time, but was not keen on the learning curve. Anyway, I did a dual-boot with XP, which had it's own issues, but which I figured out with some info. Now my problem is I can't access the internet from within Ubuntu. It's finding the hardware, I think.

I thought that I would try the KDE desktop and installed it with the command
yum groupinstall "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
After tasting KDE for a while I decided that I far prefer Gnome.
I removed the KDE with
yum groupremove "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
This appeared to work but I then found that whilst I can boot into Windows 7, I can no longer boot into Fedora 12.
I have tried booting the F12 DVD and going into to the Rescue function. I re-installed grub but still cannot boot into F12.
I have looked at grub.conf but can see nothing wrong.
I want to move a simple .rules file from a downloaded package which I have extracted to my homefolder, to the rules.d folder. So I open both Nautilus windows and drag it over, and I get the great "permission denied" error
View 1 Replies View RelatedI currently run Linux Mint as sole OS and with a separate /home partition. I have a small (12GB) unused partition on my HDD where I would like to install Ubuntu 10.10. I have a lot of data on my /home partition and instead of giving Ubuntu its own separate /home partition I just want it to share the same /home partition as Mint.
I realize that I can get access to all my home files from Ubuntu anyway but I thought it would make more sense to have both OS�s use the same /home partition.
Then I got to thinking that perhaps this may not be a good idea at all. I am not sure how this all works but I got worried that this may cause some incompatibilities that I do not know about.
Question: Is this a good idea? If yes, how do I need to go about installing Ubuntu, meaning that should I then during the installing process choose the empty partition to be used as / only and the current /home also as the Ubuntu /home? without formatting it so as not to loose my data? Or is there a correct/safer way to do this?
(Just as explanation, I like both Mint 10 and Ubuntu 10,10, and both run very stable on my system. I use my computer for work and need a stable system, but as we all know sometimes things can go wrong and mostly after a new update. So my thinking is that when I have both Distro`s on my laptop and one crashes I could still boot from the other and save the day.)

I was able to enable a quota, but my problem now is keeping the user inside their home directory. I've searched around and found an old thread on here (from 2003) that gave me some ideas, but it still isn't working. Should I be running vsftpd standalone or leave it on the inetd? If I set the shell to /sbin/nologin or /bin/false, the user can't log in through FTP, even.

So I got a brand new macbook pro yesterday, and I like it! But I really don't want to go "all mac" at this point, so want to make this machine dual boot with Ubuntu.
It occurs to me that what I *should* be able to do is partiton the hard drive something like so:
And a /swap partition in there as well, of course. The point being that I'm thinking it should be possible to edit /etc/fstab to mount sda4 (above) to /home when I boot up under Ubuntu, and have OSX mount the same partition to /Users when I boot into OSX, thus allowing me to access all user data easily in either OS.
However, I don't know much about macs...
So I'm thinking I'm looking at two issues. First, what filesystem should I format /dev/sda4 (above) as if I want this to work? Does OSX support ext4, or would I be better off trying to get HFS+ support under Ubuntu?
Second, what would be required to get OSX to mount /dev/sda4 to /Users at boot? That is, what is the OSX equivalent of editing /etc/fstab?
I used to know how to access and rw other linux drives and do the fstab magic. For some reason I've lost my touch. I just want the drive to automount and have full access. I don't need a beginners tutorial on mkdir and fdisk -l. Is there a foolproof way to get my drives to do what I want? I dual boot fedora and ubuntu, but have the same issues on both.

The Mousepad is irratic and the PCMCIA WiFi and Ethernet cards are not recognized. What's a good way to upgrade? (I can access the network from an external modem and from a dual-boot Windows 98 WiFi)
View 7 Replies View RelatedNow this is a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04. I have done nothing but follow the steps on installing flash and ati driver from the main site. I have this problem on my desktop too which also has ATI graphics but with a AMD cpu. The desktop was upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 and the driver installed from ATI site like my laptop. This is really troubling because while the video is in full screen its using over 90% of my cpu?? Then my laptop gets really hot so I just switch back to Windows 7(which only uses 15%). Last time I had this problem was with the FGLRX proprietary drivers on Ubuntu 9.10 with the desktop.

My new system build is nearly complete and I will be formatting it in about an hour and installing the OS's. I am running a 64 bit quadcore system and plan to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7 Ultimate. However, I am torn on which filesystem to use.
I have been out of the PC craze for the past 2 years familiarizing myself with the mechanics and modifications of fast cars. Now that I have returned, much has changed that I am left to catch up with so I'm coming here for a quick answer.I am running a 1TB RAID 10 array, and do not want to split drivespace evenly for each OS. Which approach would a better idea? Should I use NTFS or EXT3? My plans for the machine are Ubuntu for everyday computing and any games that will run natively on linux.
Windows 7 will be reserved for any games that run on windows In fact, gaming is the ONLY reason I am not switching solely to a linux machine. Now, obviously each operating system and It's programs will be installed and run on It's own native filesystem NTFS for windows and EXT3 for Ubuntu. But I am torn as to which filesystem to store everything else on. Should movies, music and games be stored on an EXT3 or NTFS filesystem?curious as to the CPU utilization, access time and overall performance of both EXT3 from within windows and NTFS from within linux. Music and movies aren't really a concern but the one thing I would put emphasis on is how much would system performance be impacted when running a native linux game from within linux but on an NTFS filesystem? so, I am leaning towards EXT3 but what are the benefits of one over the other
I've been researching this all day with no luck thus far. Basically I need to cutoff port 21/ftp access from IP addresses outside of my local network. My local IP range is something like 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.150 -- so anything outside of this range would automatically be blocked.
Any IP address outside of this range would be denied as I use SFTP for remote access, etc. from home, etc.
I've researched IP tables, tcp wrappers, etc. but am still unsure which would be best for what is probably a simple fix.

After adding a second ubuntu variant to this machine I wanted to share the home directories so I had easy access to the same files regardless. so I read up on modifying home directories and put in the correct location and then rebooted. On boot-up the system warned me that it could not access the "shared" home directory and after a few more errors and warnings ended up at a blank screen with a mouse pointer!. All I can do is access a term window (ctrl-alt f4). So what I need is to know is where the user properties are stored so I can go and edit those from term rather than the usual way!

Partition 1: Windows 7 - NTFS
Partition 2: Ubuntu 10.10 - Ext4
Partition 3: Data - NTFS
Partition 4: Windows Recovery - meh...
Basically, I have it so that I have one large NTFS partition (Data) for sharing files between Ubuntu and Windows. It works very well. I keep all my Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos on "Data" and then sym-link those folders to my home folder on Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I'm afraid to bootup Windows. Sometimes when I boot Windows, files that I made or edited in Ubuntu get lost, unindexed or corrupt. It happens very frequently with image files (.jpeg, .png, etc.) but also happens with PDFs and folders. This means that not only do these files become unusable, but I also can't delete them. Even using $ rm -rf my_file returns a "Cannot delete my_file. It is not a file or directory."
The only way to get rid of these files is to perform a CHKDSK on Data when I boot Windows. CHKDSK always finds a shed-load of files that have gone haywire. I'm usually greeted by an seemingly indefinite list of "Removing index entry xyz from $afxyz" and other scary looking actions being taken out on my files.I keep backups of my files on an external HDD and a remote server, but it's no use when I'm backing up corrupt files.
I used the command "update-manager -d" to put Natty Beta 2 on my Acer Aspire One netbook. It worked perfectly, but took about 7 hours because the SSD is so slow. The upgrade replaces the Netbook Remix of Ubuntu 10.10. Now my desktop is full of icons that weren't there before. They are the files and folders in my home directory. Until yesterday, my desktop icons showed the contents of the subdirectory $HOME/Desktop instead. How can I restore the former behaviour?
The desktop icons are being provided by Nautilus. I know this because I can drill down into the Nautilus options using gconf-editor and un-check the box that makes Nautilus manage the desktop. This makes all the icons go away. So I know how to get (1) lots of icons [the wrong ones] or (2) no icons at all. I'd like an elegant clean way to achieve (3) just a few icons [the right ones]. [My idea of "elegant": some way to inform Nautilus about which directory to look in for the purpose of generating icons for the desktop.]
