Ubuntu :: NAS Access Is Very Slow (but Not On XP)?

Mar 11, 2010

I have this sitecom MD-253 NAS disk using Raid-1 and equipped with two 1TB WD hdd's. The NAS firmware is Linux of some cind and I use the, pr. today, latest firmware. However, as mounting the NAS server was not any challenge, the response time is in the most shamefully end of the scale. Even listing folder content is deadly slow, beeing from one to three second before list is shown. Both the linux laptop and the NAS is connected through cable via the router, the XP however, is wireless but access is no problem here.I found a few tutorials around dealing with mounting the NAS drive but few which dealt with the speed issues and none solving my problems. I saw one post in another forum though discussing if the problem could be caching but they had no solution.

I have used different commands mounting, but at the moment i use this one in fstab:Code://192.168.0.190/Projects /mnt/nas cifssername=zainka,password=********,_netdev,uid=zainka,gid=users 0 0Response time is not affected though. That is, for FTP the responce time is actually higher but then I run into other issues like that mounting it like a disk is difficult and the link must be keept alive constantly I also seen some comments about using NFS but isn't this a proprietary MS protocol for file access?

Ubuntu :: Very Slow Access To Windows Shares

My first post, having only installed 11.04 at the weekend on one of my old PCs.Everything is up & running pretty well, I have a 100BT home network with 4 Windows XP PCs and a Synology DS211j server.I can see & access these other shares from Ubuntu, but it's so slow to connect, approx. 45 seconds each time, compared to almost instant from any of the XP machines.Could someone suggest how this performance could be improved?

Ubuntu :: Painfully Slow Access To Particular Website

Sep 1, 2011

I'm having difficulty accessing http://egrants.ed.state.pa.us/v2/default.asp while using Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 10.04.I've tried chrome, firefox and opera as well as three different ISPs. My Windows machines don't seem to have this problem.

A little background:My agency has several offices, some with different ISPs, but with essentially the same setup: ISP router/modem --> Ubuntu Server with Squid/Dansguardian --> Switches, etc. When we first started encountering this problem I thought I had to have had something going on with Squid/IP Tables or something of that sort. I connect my laptop (running Ubuntu 11.04) directly the ISPs modem/router and have the same slowness. I figure that maybe the site is having problems. I ask the other tech in my office to try it out (he's running Windows 7) and he has no slowness with the site when connected directly to the ISPs modem/router.For the time being I've circumvented the filter box for the Windows users who need access to this site, but I'm not certain that's the best solution.I contacted the site's tech support several times and just gotten a "we'll call you back".Any suggestions on things I can check/change with my setup to get this working?

Ubuntu :: Bluetooth Access To Photos On Nokia Very Slow

May 28, 2011

Accessing photos on my Nokia N97 mini via Bluetooth was lightning fast on 10.10, but on 11.04, each click on a folder (via Nautilus) takes well over 1 minute to display the next level and to swap from 'Icon View' to 'List View' with around 90 photos in a folder didn't complete after several minutes at which point I cancelled out. To select 5 photos took 1-2 mins but after an initial wait, the actual transfer was fairly fast. I've a MSI U100. Connection via Bluetooth works without problem.

Ubuntu :: Minimizing Disk Access On Slow USB Flash ?

Jul 16, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 as a full install from a USB flash drive. In other words, I've installed to the flash stick just as though it were a normal hard drive. This is not a Live USB/Persistent install.

The drive is an off-the shelf 8GB Gigaware stick, and its read/write performance is pretty slow. Any time I do anything that requires disk access, it's very sluggish and tends to hang.

I'm looking for advice on things I could do to minimize the amount of disk-access made in the course of using the system, so that it will feel snappier and more responsive.

Some things I've done already:Installed 'preload', which is a daemon that monitors what programs you use frequently, and pre-loads them into RAM to reduce startup time. Mounted /tmp as a tmpfs (RAM disk) and moved my Firefox and Chrome browser caches into RAM. Set noatime for my root and home partitions.

Should I be trying to disable the filesystem journal as well? I'm less concerned with potentially burning out the flash drive with too many writes than I am with just making the system more responsive and nicer to use.

One other thing I was reading about is the so-called "Laptop Mode" that appears to be kernel settings to allow you to spin down a laptop hard drive: [url]

Obviously a flash drive doesn't spin, but it seems like some of those same techniques could be helpful here. Is there anyone who has experience running Linux in a situation with a very slow hard drive?

The computers I'm using this flash drive with all have between 2 and 8 GB of RAM, so moving more stuff into RAM is unlikely to be an issue.

Fedora :: Remote Access Very Slow After New VGA?

I have installed the kmod drivers and it hasn't changed anything

The shares get mounted correctly and you can navigate through the directories and open files. The only problem is that it randomly starts going really slow taking 30 seconds or longer to open a directory that has 2 or 3 files in it.I have tried quite a few things to try and fix this without any luck. Its getting to the point where I am having to consider recommending that we use windows instead, which I would rather not do as I think its good for students to experience different operating systems during school.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Internet Access Slow In CentOS 5.3?

Compared to Windows Visya and other Linux distros ( Fedora 11, Suse 11.1, Mandriva 2009.1 ) access to the internet is much slower. It seems there is a noticeable delay when running CentOS 5.3. before internet access kicks in each time I am surfing the web or updating my system.

Is there any way I can speed things up, or determine why CentOS 5.3 seems much slower ?

Ubuntu :: Slow Startup, Plymouth Not Showing, Slow Desktop Load?

May 3, 2010

I'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?

Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean). Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. Boot speed is not a dial with desktops - I know - but it can be a symptom that my system is a bit a messy (and I don't like it, since I installed Jaunty less then 1 year ago). (!Forgot! I also installed grub2 by hand

Ubuntu :: USB Disk - Slow Transfer Speeds And Slow System?

Apr 17, 2011

Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!

When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!

This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.

Ubuntu Servers :: Webdav Access - When Connect From Nautilus - Says - Access Was Denied

Mar 26, 2010

I'm having a problem with my webdav share. I have a secure webdav folder that gets accessed via a non-standard port and requires basic authentication. I can connect and interact with it fine via cadaver. However, when I try to connect from nautilus, it says "Access was denied." To make it even stranger, sometimes I can click on the folder in nautilus (it still mounts) and access it. Sometimes not (just repeats the error message and won't show me the contents). I may not even un-mount it, but just look at other folder, then click it again and be able to access it, but again - only rarely.

I asked a friend to try connecting from his windows vista computer and it would not work. It would not work from my windows XP virtual computer either. However, it mounts and works just find from my work computer (also Windows XP).

So it seems to be a 50/50 chance that the drive will mount on any given computer/system and work. Do anyone know what the problem may be? I'm guessing user permissions, but I can't figure out what.

I've made sure the webdav folder is owned by www-data and www-data has read access to the password file as well.

When I try connecting from nautilus, I get this in the log file:

Code:

Here is one of the (many) sites I've tried looking at: [url]

Ubuntu Networking :: The Phone Can Access The Internet Through The Computer Unable To Get Access To Https Sites, Like Webmails

Dec 31, 2010

I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following

----On the phone---

-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.

-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.

-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"

----On Ubuntu 10.04---

-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server

-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.

-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.

-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd

-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).

-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"

-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.

-Apply policies and start the firewall.

------------

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:

1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.

2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.

So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection

Ubuntu :: Write Access On Raid5 Mount And Network Access

Apr 22, 2010

I'm running ubuntu 9.10, and created a softraid5 with no problems. Now i need it to automount with user read/write access, and i need to make some network share folders. My fstab has the following line for the raid:

Code:
/dev/md0 /media/raid auto rw,user,auto,exec 0 0
After i mounted it, i changed the permission with:

Code:
sudo chmod 777 /media/raid/
So now i can create folders and files on it.
Then i created some shares, one with guest access and other with no guest access.

Now the questions:

1) If i access the guest shared folder via WinXP, i create files and folders, but they appear locked on ubuntu, so i cant access them until i change the permissions. If i go to proprieties/Permissions, the owner is "nobody".

2) What password do i need to use on WinXP, and i try to access the non-guest shared folded? Do i need to create a user just for that?
